After finishing high school, Umu decided to enrol at JTTI to learn the skills she needs to work in hospitality. Her ultimate goal however, is to run her own business.Umu is not intimidated by the fact that she is one of the only female students at JTTI and she has certainly held her own. However, in an effort to improve on his skills, Mzali decided to enroll at JTTI and he is currently in his 2nd year.He has also saved up some money with the intention of opening his own cafe once he completes his studies at JTTI.We are sure that with his combination of ambition and intelligence, Mzali is well on his way to running a successful cafe in Zanzibar.Volunteer for a better world! Nareena Switlo graduated from the University of Victoria in Anthropology with an extensive background in the entertainment and tourism sector. She went to Zanzibar as an independent volunteer and then was recruited in country as a CUSO-VSO volunteer.She is working as a volunteer is our secure livelihoods program at the Jambiani Tourism Training Institute. It is operated by a Canadian based NGO called Hands Across Borders.Students from all over Tanzania apply for a 2 year free program that gives them the tools and experience to work in the tourism sector. The students work in the restaurant for their practicum. Guests, students and other NGO's help to support JTTI in a unique model of giving back.I was on holiday visiting Nareena, who is my daughter. As a mother I can say that I am proud of her contribution and growth. Volunteer for a better world! Nareena Switlo is a volunteer at JTTI, teaching Local Tour Guiding. She has 12 first year students enrolled in this class. These students will take us on a tour of Jambiani (the south-east coast of Zanzibar).Asuweni Hassan (year 1 student) takes us on a tour of a local Madrassat in Jambiani. This Madrassat educates 250 children from the age of 5 to adults on the fundamentals of the Islamic religion.
