134 | Emily Williams Turns a $442 sale to a 7 Figure Business Do you ever feel stuck and bored in your life? You may feel stuck in: A boring 9-5 job A service-based business with low-paying clients An investor who is micromanaging your business A client who is bringing you down I’ve got good news for you: you have the power to say NO to the things that make you feel stuck! You don’t have to settle for less than the best for your business. Kick that J-O-B to the side. Raise your prices. Say NO to that investor, or client that is keeping you from your best. There’s one major secret that is going to help you to accomplish all of that, and it’s your mindset.  When you shift the way you approach people and dig deeper into what drives those NO’s, you’ll be able to better see exactly where you - and what you have to offer - fit in. Best of all, when you know what drives your ideal client to say NO, you’re able to tailor your offer perfectly to meet their needs, which is more likely to bring you a YES! This week’s guest on Success Unfiltered Podcast, Emily Williams was broke and ready to create a better life from herself. Her first YES got her a $442 sale, but when she adjusted her mindset, she was able to scale her business to seven figures within less than two years.  If you’re feeling burnt out and trapped in a small business, you’re going to be inspired by Emily’s journey, and what it took to get her to seven figures. Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Emily Williams. Emily’s first sale brought her $442 - and she was on the call while on a park bench in California. She had two calls: one client said NO and one said YES. Emily received 54 NO’s in a row! How could she overcome that? Her coach encouraged her to cut her coaching prices in half, and focus exclusively on selling them. Her goal was to sell 10 spots. Not only did she sell 10 spots, but she sold more! That brought her $20,000, and was the first step on her upward trajectory. One of the huge factors that changed Emily’s sales calls was going deeper than NO. It was understanding why people said NO rather than just accepting that first NO. When Emily went deeper on the calls, she found that it was fear that made her potential clients say NO. When she was able to help people find solutions to those fears, she began to hear more YES’s. You have to be curious to be able to overcome those NO’s. Curiosity helps uncover hidden potential. People don’t want a paid friend, they want someone who is going to see them for what they have to offer. When people say they don’t have money, that’s B.S. People find money for what they truly want, whether it be from outside funding or from borrowing money. It can be found! “If you want to get to seven figures, you have to be willing to talk to people about money.” ~ Emily Williams Emily shares the story of her greatest NO when six people dropped out of her high-level mastermind. During the time of bouncing back, Emily leaned on her coaches and mentors. Emily shares how those NO’s were some of the best things that has happened to her.  Hearing NO’s made Emily go through the learning curve fast: she had to get good at learning the financials in her business and build a strong foundation. You have to learn to take the emotions out of business and recognize that NO isn’t always about you!  Create an atmosphere where your clients can communicate with you, especially before things go wrong. You want to learn and grow, make sure your clients know that. Remember that business is built in transactions and contracts: how can you protect the business you have built?  Protecting your business means you may have to be a fierce leader, and not always make popular decisions. “You need people in your corner: you cannot do this alone.” ~ Emily Williams Learn how to spot toxic people early on. There are some people who you just have to say NO to because they are not right for you! “Know what your own limits are, and your boundaries, and put them in place.” ~ Emily Williams Emily shares what she would tell her younger self. He uses a unique management style to empower his employees & customers alike to make the experience all that they want it to be. Iain is happily married to Gabrielle Grae and they currently split their time between San Antonio, TX, Miami, FL & traveling the globe attending or creating consciousness raising events. When you get to the end of a presentation, and you’re about to close the sale, you can get information that you need to mitigate the impact of a NO, or even change the answer! These pulse checks can be the key to a closed sale! I teach accountants how to have confidence in closing sales, and there was one accountant who I recently had an enrollment call with, who I knew was a great fit for my program. But when I did a pulse check, he was interested... however it wasn’t the right time for him. By asking the right questions, I was able to find out this useful information. This week’s guest on Success Unfiltered, Iain Grae, is a serial entrepreneur with multiple 7 figure businesses. His goal is to help one thousand people become millionaires by 2023 - and he knows just how to leverage a pulse check in business to close a sale! Grab my FREE guide “3 Ways To Turn a NO Into a YES” right HERE! Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Iain Grae. Iain shares about his businesses, including his advertising agency in New York, and the San Antonio raceway. Iain started his career working for an agency at low pay rates, making outbound calls trying to get as many decision makers on the phone as possible! When Iain was making those calls, he heard more than a hundred NO’s each day, and learned to see those as a blessing so that he could learn from each NO! He took the time to get introspective and look into why people said NO to the products and services that he was selling, and learn from that. There is a reason behind every NO! Start your pitches with an intention that everyone can agree with. Help your clients and leads see that you are there to serve them. Sales are everywhere. Learn to take a “pulse check” to learn if your client is ready to buy. Ask, “on a scale of 1 to 10, how do you feel about this?” They will tell you! When you speak to a company in a way that they can connect with you, they will want to buy from you. Iain started his agency in New York with NO support: he was turned away from a young entrepreneur's group because he hadn’t made enough money yet. When he was rejected from that group, he decided that he was going to create a place where people just getting started could find the support that he didn’t have. Big risks bring big rewards: Iain started his agency with credit card funding, and used the credit cards to create cash flow. There was no option but success for Iain - he “burned his boats” so he couldn’t go back to the life he had led in the past! His entrepreneurial journey started from a NO! When he asked his dad for a motocross bike, his dad said NO, because they didn’t have money. Iain found a way to make money, and bought his own motocross bike. “I’m going to look at possibilities as opportunities.” ~ Iain Grae NO can often come from misaligned intentions and perspective. Do everything that you can to align yourself as a YES! A change in Iain’s perspective aligns him better with a YES. Iain shares what he would tell his younger self. 091 | Dr. Robert Yonover Shares How to Be Rescued from a Sea of NO’s Dr. Robert Yonover is a Ph.D. geochemist/volcanologist with a history of innovative scientific contributions, technologies, and patents. His Ph.D. work includes multiple ALVIN submersible dives to two miles deep off the Galapagos Islands to retrieve submarine lava samples, with laboratory work performed at NASA Johnson Space Center and MIT. A North Shore big wave surfer and Molokai Channel rough-water fisherman, Dr. Yonover uses the ocean as his laboratory. He has invented a multitude of survival technologies that were awarded U.S. Military/DARPA funding and U.S. Patents, including The military-approved SeeRescue® Streamer, Pocket Flotation technology, plus more. How many fishing lines do you have in the sea of sales? Not sure what I mean? When it comes to working towards increasing your sales, one of my favorite metaphors to use, is to compare it to finding prospects similar to putting your fishing line into the water. The more proposals you put out, or the more clients you are talking to, or the more investors you are in communication with, the bigger than chance you have of hearing YES. Similar to how the more fishing lines you have in the water, the more likely you are to catch a great big fish. My guest on this week’s Success Unfiltered, Dr. Robert Yonover, knew that he had an amazing product, the See Rescue Streamer, but so many people doubted its purpose (including his wife). But, Dr. Robert never gave up! In this episode, Dr. Robert shares his story of sending out hundreds of faxes to try to make connections with individuals who had connections to the military. Not only did Dr. Robert send letters via fax, he got people on the phone (using old school sales techniques) to share his new product and what it could do to save lives. If you’re ready to start fishing for more and more sales by connecting with more prospects, then this episode is a MUST LISTEN episode of Success Unfiltered! Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Dr. Robert Yonover. Dr. Robert introduces himself and shares a bit about what he does. The first NO that Dr. Robert received was for his rescue Streamer. His wife told him “quit playing with that plastic and get a real job.” But, even beyond that, initially, the military was not on board with using Dr. Robert’s invention. Do you look at NO’s as fuel? Dr. Robert does! He takes every NO as a lesson, modifies his pitch and keeps trotting along. It’s not easy to get in front of the military, Dr. Robert had to work hard to connect with the world aviation director. He explains how he did this in this episode. It’s a great story (and involves a fax machine)! Dr. Robert shares how he managed to get media publications involved in what he was offering. If you’ve ever thought about attending a trade show, Dr. Robert is a pro at them. He shares his skills on how to make a big impression. “I just keep challenging you to make that pitch again and again, get used to the NO’s.” ~ Dr. Robert Yonover One incredible tip that Dr. Robert shares is how you can use your connections to improve your stance with prospects. Dr. Robert used his connections to improve his chances when speaking with the Coast Guard. Dr. Robert’s most devastating NO occurred when a licensee he was intending to work entire business imploded. “The little NO’s help you for the big NO’s.” ~ Dr. Robert Yonover After losing the first licensee, Dr. Robert found a second one to work with, but that relationship did last either. They were together 15 years, when it was time to move on. When Dr. Robert was running his business, that was when he appeared on Shark Tank (Season 8, Episode 22). All 5 of the Sharks loved Dr. Robert’s invention, but none of them wanted to invest in him and his product. He explains why in this episode! Even though Dr. Robert received NO’s from 2 licensees and 5 Sharks, he didn’t let them hold him back from continuing to pursue his success. He shares his next steps in this episode. During this time, Dr. Robert’s wife was diagnosed with MS, which made all of his concerns and issues with his product and money seem insignificant. 086 | Rob Angel is The Game Changer: How to Create Extraordinary Success Rob Angel is the creator of the uber-successful and iconic board game Pictionary. There was no business plan or go-to manual, he and his close friends simply put one foot in front of the other, loving what they were doing at every part of the journey. Then celebrated the many little victories along the way. Pictionary went on to become one of the best-selling board games of the past century, selling over 32 million games, in 60 countries, in 45 languages. Let me give you a scenario… You’re about to go into the biggest pitch meeting of your life, are you prepared for hearing NO? Or, have you spent your time prepping your pitch? You might be surprised to hear this, but I would encourage you to take the time to prepare for hearing NO. That doesn’t mean you go in there with a negative attitude, assuming that you’re NOT going to get the deal, it simply means that you know how you’re going to handle things if you do get a NO. In this week’s episode, Rob Angel, the creator of Pictionary joins Success Unfiltered, to share his story from 16 to 18 hour work days to now having one of the best-selling board games. In Rob’s first big pitch he was initially told NO, but he was prepared and ready to speak on the fly about the different ways purchasing his games could benefit the store.   Rob encourages my listeners, to not just prepare their pitch, but to prepare to hear NO and to have 5 to 8 other speaking points beyond just their pitch. Doing this will help YOU be able to shift your pitch on the fly. If you’re ready to be a game changer in your business, then this episode of Success Unfiltered is a MUST LISTEN! Rob shares a little bit about himself and the game, Pictionary, which he created. There were several times when Rob was out trying to sell the game where he had to adapt on the fly. He shares one particular story that involved trying to get Pictionary into Nordstrom. It shows Rob’s ability to shift his reasoning on the fly. You’ll have to listen to hear the full episode. Rob believes that you need 5 to 8 different talking points any time you go in to pitch a product or service. Rob and his partners were shameless when it came to promoting their product. And were frequently sending their press releases to new sources to be featured. When Rob and his business partners were in the midst of trying to grow their product, Rob would work 16 to 18 hour days between his regular day job and then beating the pavement promoting Pictionary. Rob shares what he did to ensure he got a “time-out” from the work and could take a breather. “You have to have passion with a clear path to profitability.” ~ Rob Angel regarding his passion for his game Pictionary. When it came time to hold the launch party for Pictionary, Rob and his partners were working to put the finishing touches on the game, but ten days before the launch Rob receives a phone call from the printer, sharing Rob’s most devastating NO. You’ll have to listen to the episode to learn what it was. Despite this huge devastating NO, Rob and his partners bonded -- “Good things come from negatives,” as Rob said. Rob and his business partners ended up needing to host two launch parties because Rob had forgotten to invite the press to the first one. Both were a huge success, though! The most accomplished NO that Rob and his partners had involved Hasbro and the contract that Hasbro presented. This is a GREAT story, one you don’t want to miss! If times get tough, Rob recommends ensuring you have a strong network of people to talk to and look to for support. Another huge lesson that Rob shares it that when it comes to working with business partners and have the success of your business being the forefront, is to leave your egos at the door, and not bring them into the decision-making process. Rob shares a great story about how the color scheme for Pictionary was decided on and relates it to why we should leave our egos at the door. In 2001, Rob and his partners sold Pictionary to Mattel. How many NO’s have you heard in the last week? Hopefully you answered, A LOT! In order to be successful in business and sales, you want to rack up as many NO’s as you possibly can. And, those NO’s do not mean you’re a failure. NO’s are just lessons on the path to YES. This week’s guest, Pamela Slim, is no stranger to the word NO, in fact, the number one piece of advice that Pamela would tell her younger self, is to stop taking rejection personally and to keep racking up the NO. It may seem counterintuitive to rack up NO’s, but that’s simply because you allow those NO’s to affect your confidence. Instead, you need to start looking at them as lessons you can learn from. Pamela used this experience to realize that she wanted to learn more and do better. “You must be very honest with yourself about where some of the areas of true shortcomings are.” ~ Pamela Slim Pamela attributes her change in outlook to failures, to her circle of mentors. There are always ways to learn more and do better in future pitches, Pamela shares three things she learned after her first failed pitch. Pamela’s most devastating NO happened recently in regards to a new book she is trying to write. She shares the full story in this episode. Even after being initially turned down by her book publisher for her third book, Pamela has dedicated herself to learning more about her clients and people so that she can add to the book. (Content Warning: Sexual Assault) Normally I don’t do too many episodes about current events in the news; I tend to save that for the blog. But recently I had a lot to say on Twitter about the situation with Aziz Ansari and as it turns out, I’ve got more to say. The issue with Ansari has less to do with "bad dates" or litigating why someone doesn't leave and everything to do with how we talk about sex and consent. How does someone who's a safe ally to women, someone who's supposed to be the guy who "gets it" still get it wrong when it comes to consent? Show highlights:  How we get consent wrong Why asking "why didn't she leave" is the wrong question How one person's "completely consensual" encounter can be the worst night of someone's life Why "mixed signals" are anything but How we create a culture were "no" means "try harder" ...and so much more.
