This week we finish our discussion of how to add Isekai to your adventures
This week we are talking about The Great Cleric, an Isekai that trades the typical overpowered hero trope for a salaryman just trying not to die a second time. We largely spend some time debating the show's unique mechanics, specifically the protagonist's grueling training regimen and his constant consumption of the mysterious "Substance X." Rick got hung up on some details but overall he felt that the show had a book end. Jack found it to be an easy watch and an incredibly easy binge so much so that he knocked it out in a single sitting. He's much more forgiving of the wide-open ending, viewing it as a setup that actually has him considering picking up the light novels just to see where the story goes next. About the anime:The Great Cleric takes a slightly different approach to the standard isekai formula. Instead of an overpowered hero being summoned to defeat a demon lord, we follow a salaryman who gets reincarnated as a 15-year-old named Luciel. And his main motivation is pure survival and since he's terrified of dying young again, he chooses the job class "Healer" as his main job. However, realizing that healers often get exploited or killed because they can't fight back he also chooses the martial arts skill as a back up to help him and he decides to train his body to an absurd degree at the Adventurer's Guild. Where more chaos ensues as we drinks something called "Substance X" with daily training. It's essentially a workplace drama disguised as a fantasy anime, focusing on bureaucracy, corruption in the Healer's Guild, and the grind of self-improvement.Next Week's Pick: “Burst Angel”Have you had the chance to watch The Great Cleric or any of our previous selections? Happy New Year! For the first time ever, our fortnightly episode falls on January 1st, so we scoured high and low to find a manga related to the new year! And we failed. So here's the next best thing when you need a series on new beginnings - isekai! But not just any isekai, an onsen isekai! ...No, not that onsen isekai (yes there's multiple), but Reincarnated as a Hot Spring in an Alternate World! ~ Welcome to That Time I Started A Podcast To Read Trash Manga With My Friends And Actually Most Of Them Were Trash But Some Of Them Weren't! Or The Trash Manga Friends Podcast, for short. New episodes drop every fortnight, where our trio of Sean, Mike and Phil read the first two volumes (or equivalent) of a manga, webtoon, manhua or manhwa, analysing every little thing to discuss what's good, what's bad, but mostly, what's trash. Five years in, we're just getting started, as trash never ends, and neither do we. 2025 is Dying - Read Indie VN's to kill it faster!Happy New Year, Dear Listeners, and thank you for once again joining us on this delightful journey into the vast and delightful realm of Indie Visual Novels. In our Indie VN Compilation episodes, Sara and Runa each read a handful of small visual novels produced by independent teams or sometimes even solo developers, many of which are free and if not are pretty cheap, and all of which offer their own unique and exquisite delights. From VNs made for game jams to delightful gay fluff to intense vampire melodramas to Isekai'd Dark Knights to the epic highs and lows of being trans in high school, we'll tell you about some games you might have missed but definitely need to check out! In these Indie Game Compilation Track episodes we want to highlight some of the incredible indie VNs we've played recently and get people excited about the things happening in Indie Visual Novel development spaces. We want to not only showcase the amazing breadth of work coming from Indie developers but also talk about some of our favorite games, many of which touch on subjects, characters, and experiences we rarely get the chance to see in games from larger studios. You can find a list of each game we played below and we encourage you to play along with us, and go searching for other Indie visual novels as well! Most of these games are free and if not, fairly cheap (though please tip the creators if you are able), and you can read most of them inside of an hour or two. In fact, we want YOU, dear listener, to pick at least one of these games to play after you listen, and then tell us about it! You can also check our Patreon, where listeners and patrons can submit either a short audio clip or a few sentences telling us about an Indie VN you've played and enjoyed recently! We may even include your submission on our next Indie VN Compilation Track episode (only if you want, that is). A shadowed king who hates war leads an “evil” empire with a softer hand than his reputation suggests—and the world still trembles. We dive into Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra, where 4X strategy logic becomes the law of a living isekai: fog of war, resource scarcity, city growth, hero summons, scripted events, and late-game bosses that crash into personal vows and fragile alliances. If you've ever optimized a tech tree at 2 a.m., this story will feel both familiar and unsettling. We unpack Takuto's rise with Atou at his side, the dark elves' loyalty forged through food and trust, and the careful build of Mynoghra from research to production. Isla's arrival as queen of bugs adds domestic muscle and battlefield poise—until a scripted lock forces her sacrifice. That loss cracks the narrative wide open as Caria and Maria transform from attendants into the "Witches of Regret", dispensing ruthless justice on demon generals with powers that read like status effects made real. Along the way, saints clash with witches, brain eaters test diplomacy by terror, and a rogue RPG player snipes the demon lord before fleeing with a censored-name companion, reminding us that systems invite external chaos. What makes Mynoghra stand out is how cleanly it respects game mechanics without hand-waving. The world treats events, classes, and dice as binding rules. Takoto's ethics sharpen under pressure: he rejects needless war, feeds the hungry, and still embraces the clarity of an Ascension victory when Minagura suffers losses. We talk pacing, art choices, boss design, and the show's willingness to commit to consequences. For strategy fans and dark fantasy lovers, it's a compelling blend of empire management, moral ambiguity, and high-stakes combat that earns our 8/10 recommendation. If you enjoyed this breakdown, follow the show, share with a friend who loves 4X strategy games and isekai anime, and leave a quick review so more strategy nerds can find us. We're discussing episodes 4 through 6, and we're continuing to trim down on which shows we're committing to. Starting off with Dad's a Hero, Mom's a Spirit, and I'm Reincarnated, Justin is up to here with Ellen and thinks we're getting too much screen time. Jakia reminds Justin that Ellen is the main character. Justindrops after episode 4, while Keoni and Jakia continue onward, but Keoni admits the difficulty of watching the show without assistance. In a Wild Boss Appears, Keoni continues to make similarities to OverLord, and Justin has theories on whoDina truly is committed to watching to see what this dastardly Dina will do. Jakia is excited about A Gatherer's Adventure in Isekai, whereas Justin and Keoni considers it mid at best. In trueKeoni fashion, he compares this show to Campfire Cooking in Another World Season 2. Justin gives us an update on My Gift Level9999 Unlimited Gacha: A Backstabber in a backwater, and Keoni gets into it with Justin about what he wants with this show. The crew discusses what it means for a character to haveroundness and Justin and Keoni have mini-crash outs on whether or not certain characters express enough emotions. Spy Family Season 3 is cute, funny, full of hijinks and shenanigans. From long shoot days to surprising celebrity encounters, it's a fascinating glimpse into the entertainment industry from someone who's lived it.Next up, the dice bring us to “What Are You Nerding Out About?” Joe talks about the new anime A Gatherer's Adventure in Isekai, a surprisingly fun (if familiar) addition to his seasonal watchlist. It's a sincere, dad-level discussion about nurturing potential and helping children thrive. Finally, the show wraps with the “Parliament of Papas” segment. The hosts unpack a complex Reddit story about a 19-year-old on a gap year who refuses to pay rent to her parents after already covering her own groceries and cooking. It sparks a thoughtful talk about family expectations, independence, and communication. From heartfelt reflections to geeky excitement, this episode is the perfect reminder that fatherhood and fandom go hand in hand. Season 3 of One Punch Man is finally here, and the anime streets are divided. In this episode of Anime Minority Report, Jamie says everyone needs to calm down because the season is not as bad as the internet claims. Guerby disagrees and is ready to throw hands, calling it the worst anime out right now. From animation complaints to shaky story pacing, we pick apart the new season with ruthless honesty and way too much laughter. Jamie also goes off about a growing Isekai problem. Why are main characters suddenly telling their new families they were reincarnated like it's a LinkedIn bio update? Unfiltered anime takes. Real fan energy. Disrespect where deserved. Tap in.
Oh shit, look at the time. It's manga time. Again. Like Groundhog day, we are back in the same place at the same time. Or at least close enough to the same time that it doesn't matter. We're not Batman who's arrival thirty seconds late means the warehouse explodes or anything. We're much more important which is why we can start whenever we feel. Tim has Otherside Picnic. It's sort of inspired by Roadside Picnic but has yuri schoolgirls because this is a manga we're talking about. Sorawo wanders into a a dimension she's been exploring and nearly dies. Lucky for her another schoolgirl, Toriko, wanders over with a gun … Continue reading "Manga Pulse 545: Isekai Panic"
This week we dive into Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy Season 2 and we spent most of the time talking about the teaching arc like why that first “demo” bout with Shiki was about earning respect and not scaring off the students, whether Makoto's class were troublemakers or just talented misfits, and how that whole school stretches into bigger geopolitical plot points; we also pulled in manga-only context that patched the anime's fuzzy bits, like humans getting language as a goddess “gift” so it helped explain why he thought he couldn't speak it. From there we spiral into some of the lore, contract power-scaling, and how those Demiplane critters are basically demon-lord tier. We argued pacing vs. payoff on the academy and merchant-guild threads, questioned the handling of Hibiki's spirit-beast armor without much on-screen context, and leaned on chats live notes to connect how the classroom stuff sets up the wider moves happening off camera.About the anime:Season 2 picks up right where Season 1 left off, with Makoto heading to Rotsgard Academy and then he reluctantly takes a teaching job more so that he can open a store in the city forcing him to juggle that and the Kuzunoha Company while also quietly growing the Demiplane into a functioning society. The goddess's chosen heroes, Hibiki and Tomoki, also step into the spotlight this season, with their ideals clashing with Makoto's hands-off approach as campus lessons spill into citywide incidents and merchant/noble scheming. The plot weaves through academy lectures, the Rembrandt family, and rising human-demon tensions, and sprinkled with character growth and fights that are nudging the whole world toward a larger political and spiritual showdown that even the goddess can't ignore.Next Week's Pick: "Arcane"Have you had the chance to watch Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy Season 2 or any of our previous selections? This week we talk about Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy S1 which was Jeb's pick. We talk about how Makoto gets pulled to another world, but then instantly gets rejected by a vain goddess for being “ugly”. From there he builds his own life and founds the Kuzunoha company coupled with a hidden demi-plane for demihumans, and contracts with Tomoe and Mio while butting heads with human society mostly on ideology. Jack contrasts manga vs. anime (the “ugly” bit hits both worlds) and floats a theory that Makoto's magic pressure warps how humans see him; and the two other “pretty” heroes exist mostly as goddess eye-candy. We also touch on several other aspects like archery, his element quirks and the Level-1-forever gag vs. why he won't fake it.About the anime:Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy follows Makoto Misumi,a highschool student that gets sent to a fantasy world by the moon god Tsukuyomi due to a contract his parents had, only to be rejected by the resident Goddess of the world he was going to for being “ugly.” As a result he is stripped of the “Hero” title before his adventure even begins. Makoto is forced to carve out his own path, quickly amassing power and allies: the dragon Tomoe and the calamity-spider Mio. He also makes the Kuzunoha Company, builds a hidden demiplane where demi-humans can thrive, and clashes with huyman society and the goddess.Next Week's Pick: "Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy Season 2"Have you had the chance to watch Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy Season 1 or any of our previous selections? We almost need a new term after this episode. Something to describe getting bad manga out of a grab bag. It's much like getting some sort of STI though in this case it's going to the whorehouse and not bringing along a condom on purpose. Stupid Tankabon Inside? This week we talk about how Power-Rangers-meets-isekai in The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World, where the MC Togo “dies” but wakes in a fantasy world, we laugh about the stat sheet and how his lists punch and kick separately and some subtle gags and the classic Power Ranger trope where enemies randomly explode on defeat. We note a teased “silver” ranger, bandage/bond visual puns like “adhesion squad” and “bond breakers” with a late-season tone shift that suddenly goes dark. The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World mashes heroics and isekai comedy. Togo, the red leader of the Kizuna Five, dies(?) during a last stand against his nemesis and wakes up in a fantasy world where magic users can't make sense of his techy ranger gear. In the new world he keeps doing hero work as Kizuna Red, while he eventually teams up with the headstrong mage Yihdra Arvoln, princess Teltina, and knightly bodyguard Lowji to take on the forces of “evil”.Next Week's Pick: "Chivalry of a Failed Knight"Have you had the chance to watch Red Ranger becomes an adventure in another world or any of our previous selections? The troupe approached the gate leading into Bree and unintentionally convinced the guards they were inept enough to not be a threat. Making their way through town, a server from The Prancing Pony invited them to perform at the bar in return for free accommodations, but first Adam and Guy needed proper pants. Adam found himself miraculously clad in a kilt, so they made their way to a tailor's shop to clothe Guy. When they failed to flatter the proprietor into giving them free clothes, they instead traded their one slice of pizza and empty Tylenol bottle. Will Wet Change's comedy stylings entertain the patrons of The Prancing Pony? Featuring players Tyler Hewitt, Del Borovic, Guy Bradford, and Adam McNamara, and Dungeon Master Tom McGee. The troupe continued to fight the goblins. Adam failed to tame the dog-man, Guy noticed the goblins were sensitive to sunlight and set their tarp on fire to destroy their shade, and Tyler, who had run away, realized the others hadn't followed him, so he came back to help finish things off. They then performed the unsavoury task of searching the bodies and found a crude drawing depicting hobbits and a ring, suggesting the hobbits were the targets of more than just the Black Riders. They finally made it to the gates of Bree, relieved to find it looking well-guarded and safe, but will they find the hobbits, the stranger, and Del inside? Welcome to the fourteen official episode of Off Da Binge!
Wet Change, sans Del, set out east towards the town of Bree. They happened upon the violent willow tree, decided not to burn it down just yet, and travelled across a difficult landscape until they came across a group of goblins. Not wanting to fight, Tyler and Adam tried to run away, and Guy climbed a tree, but still they were discovered. Adam and Guy threw Baguettes and branches, but it was only the rising sun that had the strange creatures drawing back into cover. As the goblins scrambled away, a strange dog-like man in their camp broke free. Will Adam's stroke of inspiration allow him to calm and befriend this feral beast-man? Featuring players Tyler Hewitt, Del Borovic, Guy Bradford, and Adam McNamara, and Dungeon Master Tom McGee. With Del away on a mysterious adventure of her own, the rest of the troupe rested at Bombadil's house and equipped themselves for the task ahead. Tolkien gave Tyler a broken sword, Guy had the forethought to ask for food and water, and Adam dressed himself in an improvised hat and poorly-constructed toga. The troupe departed and found themselves naturally taking on specific roles within the group: Tyler as the Guide, Adam as the resourceful Hunter, and Guy as the observant Scout. They've been warned to stay off the main road, but can Wet Change avoid the Black Rider, survive the trek to Bree, and find the ringbearer at The Prancing Pony? In this solo episode of TableTalk Friday, we land in the chaotic sweet spot of beginning DMing—setting boundaries, managing player expectations, and embracing creativity. Seth dives into everything from tackling isekai-style campaigns and reining in chaotic groups, to balancing 3D printing prep with player agency. Whether you're about to run your first session or just want tips on smoother table dynamics, this one's got practical advice and real talk.
Rod and Karen banter about an Instagram people in the wild, an irate customer at Panda Express, the kind of Isekai they'd want to be in, crime not happening at docks, news article phrasing, referee draft, and athletes should cover the media like the media covers athletes. Then they discuss the TX flood blame game, a pastor urges Ken Paxton's wife to stay, Alligator Alkatraz, Gavin Newsome calls out Stephen Miller, Andrew Schulz has Trump regret, GA teen kills her parents, naked dou arrested in a stolen RV, a McMurder and sword ratchetness.
