“In many ways, I owe everything to the band.”It's been over 25 years since two students ran into each other on a street corner in Oxford and decided to set up a band. Oi Va Voi, rooted in Jewish and Eastern European musical traditions, would eventually reach hundreds and thousands of people across the world. Dash's Artistic Director Josephine Burton and Jonathan Walton, also known as Lemez Lovas, knew they needed more people and more instruments. Soon after Sophie Solomon, Steve Levi, Leo Bryant, Nik Ammar and Josh Breslaw joined the band and they began fusing together klezmer, jazz, funk and drum and bass.Last summer, their breakout album, Laughter Through Tears, turned 20 and the band marked it with a celebratory reunion gig at EartH in Hackney. In this episode we hear from the original members of the band and moments from last summer's reunion. As with all enduring families - there have been many moments when both life inside and outside the band got really tough, but Oi Va Voi lives on and this podcast celebrates these stories, the music and the people who made it. Josephine also shares why Dash Arts delayed releasing this episode back in October 2023.In the podcast, we hear from:Josephine Burton - Artistic Director, Dash Arts and former Singer, Oi Va VoiJonathan Walton/Lemez Lovas - former Trumpeter, Oi Va VoiJosh Breslaw - Drummer, Oi Va VoiLeo Bryant - former Bassist, Oi Va VoiSophie Solomon - former Violinist, Oi Va VoiNik Ammar - former Guitarist, Oi Va VoiSteve Levi - Clarinetist, Oi Va VoiKT Tunstall - former Singer, Oi Va VoiMusic:Recorded live at EartH, Hackney on 22nd July 2023. With a list of collaborators that include the likes of Anoushka Shankar, Nitin Sawhney, Talvin Singh OBE, Kae Tempest, Jocelyn Pook, Oi Va Voi, and Bianca Gismonti, and London Contemporary Orchestra, amongst many others, Memphis-born, US-Indian Violinist/Composer, Fullbright scholar and co-founder of ensembles Quest Ensemble and Balladeste Preetha Narayanan embodies a unique musical personality which transcends multiple genres, cultures, and countries. On completion of a Masters's and a doctorate in Creative Learning at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, the London-based artist is also a practicing Yogi and a certified yoga teacher from the renowned Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram institution in Chennai, India has gone on to be one of the city's most valued members of the global arts community. In this contemplative conversation we catch up for the first time since our last encounter collaborators at an intimate concert in London and riff on the experiences of growing up brown in white social paradigms, the practice of Yoga as a philosophy, and the impact broad-minded parenting from a generation less privy to labels can have on the subconscious mind and eventually the practice of an art. If Joni Mitchell & Joan Armatrading were writing a song in a smokey cafe in London, it might sound like Hadar Manor. Hadar Manor writes songs about life as an urban gypsy. Awarded – the official ‘Queen of the Underground' of London Underground's licensed buskers, described by The Observer as a ‘prodigy', Hadar's self-released debut album ‘Crossing London' follows her journey busking through Europe from the foot of the Judas mountains all the way to Glastonbury Festival where she was a finalist in the Emerging Talent Contest and went on to play at both the BBC Introducing Stage and Michael Eavis' press launch to open the festival. Hadar has collaborated with award winning producer Youth, DJ & Mixer Sandy Riviera, and modern Klezmer wizards Oi Va Voi. Worked on soundtrack for Veils, independent short film with Maureen Lipman & awards winning film ‘I'm Not An Accent'. Previous TV performances include ITV's ‘South Bank Show'. Live radio appearances include: Radio 2, Radio 4, Capital Radio, LBC. Hadar took part in BBC Radio 2 – ‘Great British Songbook' & covered a Paul McCartney's ‘Maybe I'm Amazed'. Hadar is now writing & recording new material for a new album These new songs are written, as always, through the eyes of a gypsy travelling through no man's land…
