Boston-based Marissa Nadler writes intimate, sweeping dreamy and eerie songs, that shimmer with gothic melancholy. On her 2018 record, For My Crimes, she enlisted accomplished musicians: harpist Mary Lattimore, drummer Patty Schemel (Hole), experimental multi-instrumentalist Janel Leppin, and Eva Gardner plays additional bass. Guest vocals came from Angel Olsen, Kristin Kontrol (Dum Dum Girls), and Sharon Van Etten, plus saxophonist Dana Colley (Morphine) was also a collaborator. These bittersweet and sharp slow burning tunes have a piercing intensity, driven home by Nadler's gripping voice. Marissa Nadler performs some of these songs in their stripped-down form, in-studio (from the Archives, 2018.) -Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. For My Crimes 2. Said Goodbye to That Car 3. Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Bosh Rothman. Bosh is an LA based drummer who's played with Kills Birds, Living Things, Blondshell, Kim Gordon, Courtney Love, Marissa Nadler, Alison Mosshart and many more. I was first turned on to Bosh when I subbed for the main live drummer of the band, Blondshell this past January / February. And, while Bosh doesn't normally tour with Blondshell, he recorded the drums on her debut record and it was really fun to learn his parts. The record kicks ass btw. Ever since that tour, I've wanted to get Bosh on the show so we finally made it happen…and I'm grateful we did! I hope you enjoy the 5 records that shaped Bosh Rothman into the drummer he is today. Cheers! SUBMIT YOUR LISTENER PICKS HERE BOSH's BIG FAT FIVE

Angel Olsen, Julianna Barwick and Marissa Nadler discuss going to the movies on Christmas Day, wanting to chill out over the holiday, why they try to not make ‘normal' music, creating a rough exterior of your personality, and getting lost in landscapes. Angel Olsen is a guitarist, singer, and poet from Missouri, USA who sings about romantic crises, life on the road, forgiving yourself for making mistakes, betrayal, and perseverance. Julianna Barwick is a singer who experiments with loops of her voice to create huge cinematic landscapes. She takes the listener on widescreen psychic journeys; her work is inspired by growing up in a church choir. Folk and Americana singer, guitarist, and visual artist Marissa Nadler is from Nashville, Tennessee. Her work glides between dreamy folk music, black metal and meditative ambient music, culminating in a sound that is deeply intimate and endlessly creative.

When she hops on the call, Naomi Yang is still in the middle of an editing project. It's one she's not quite ready to talk about. At it for a little over a decade, filmmaking is a relatively recent passion, but she's managed to compile an impressive list of projects, including the 2013 short film Fortune and a number of music videos for artists including Marissa Nadler and Waxahatchee. An accomplished photographer, Yang also designs book covers for Exact Change, a publishing house she co-owns with partner, Damon Krukowski. But in amongst her myriad projects, she never strays too far from music. Along with Krukowski and Dean Wareham, Yang cofounded the short-lived, but extremely influential group, Galaxie 500. Since 1991, the pair have performed as Damon & Naomi, releasing their 9th album, A Sky Record, in August of last year.

Luisteren dus!

Singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler has been a favorite of mine since I first heard her 2016 release Strangers. Since 2004, Marissa has released 10 studio albums as well as 11 self-released albums. That is no small feat for any musician of any caliber and Marissa has maintained a level of consistent greatness throughout here career. If I had to describe the sound of Marissa Nadler, I would say it's a beautiful horror. Her voice makes me think that "the other side" just may be a thing of horrifying beauty. Her latest album, The Path of the Clouds is a leap forward for Marissa as she incorporates more instrumentation than on previous releases. This doesn't take away from the sparse beauty that she has come to be known for but it adds another layer of depth to the songs making them that much darker. Talking to Marissa once again was a real treat and she is ALWAYS such a gracious and open person to talk to. I hope you enjoy this one. To check out The Path of the Clouds, Check it out HERE

Songwriter Marissa Nadler discusses her early days of touring while being an art teacher, how opening for Ghost BC helped her appreciate the heaviness in her music and how binging 'Unsolved Mysteries' has influenced her latest album, 'The Path of the Clouds.'
Marissa Nadler returns to Free Association to talk about her new record The Path of the Clouds, her ninth record recorded with engineer Seth Manchester in Rhode Island. We talk about her relocation from Boston to Nashville, remote collaboration, harpist Mary Lattimore, writing lyrics, and our fascination with true crime and the TV show Unsolved Mysteries, which directly inspired at least one of the songs on her new record.
Welcome to another week of alternative music news, reviews and opinions courtesy of us here at Riot Act. Steve and Remfry start, pretty much immediately, by excitedly reviewing the recent Biffy Clyro gig at the Forum in London, before delving into this weeks releases, discussing the news that U2 have released a rubbish song (much to Steve's disappointment but not shock), Porcupine Tree have reformed and that some Slipknot fans have set fire to a mosh pit… or something. We also pay tribute to legendary music writer Malcolm Dome, who we were very sad to learn passed away this week. RIP to the man who coined the term thrash metal and who has given both of us literally tens of thousands of words on some of our favourite music ever. We then catch up on some recent releases that we feel are worth talking about from a truly mixed bag; Limp Bizkit, The War On Drugs, Don Broco, Jonsi, JPEGMAFIA, Marissa Nadler, Teethgrynder, Rivers of Nihil, Tom VR and Can't Swim all have their latest albums discussed and dissected. There's a lot of chat about the saxophone too. Nice. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

The Rock N Roll Archaeologist sits down with author, Ryan H. Walsh to discuss his book, Astral Weeks: A Secret History of 1968. A New York Times best seller.Van “The Man” Morrison's Astral Weeks is an iconic rock album shrouded in legend, a masterpiece that has touched generations of listeners and influenced everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Martin Scorsese. In his first book, acclaimed musician and journalist Ryan H. Walsh unearths the album's fascinating backstory--along with the untold secrets of the time and place that birthed it: Boston 1968.On the 50th anniversary of that tumultuous year, Walsh's book follows a criss-crossing cast of musicians and visionaries, artists and hippie entrepreneurs, from a young Tufts English professor who walks into a job as a host for TV's wildest show (one episode required two sets, each tuned to a different channel) to the mystically inclined owner of radio station WBCN, who believed he was the reincarnation of a scientist from Atlantis. Most penetratingly powerful of all is Mel Lyman, the folk-music star who decided he was God, then controlled the lives of his many followers via acid, astrology, and an underground newspaper called Avatar.A mesmerizing group of boldface names pops to life in Astral Weeks: James Brown quells tensions the night after Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated; the real-life crimes of the Boston Strangler come to the movie screen via Tony Curtis; Howard Zinn testifies for Avatar in the courtroom. From life-changing concerts and chilling crimes, to acid experiments and film shoots, Astral Weeks is the secret, wild history of a unique time and place.Ryan H. Walsh is a musician and journalist.
