The Ghost Story of Skibbereen and Queen Victoria. Guest: Patrick Scanlan. John Batchelor introduces Professor Patrick Scanlan to discuss the Great Famine and its impact on the millions who fled to America. The conversation begins with a "ghost story" involving Queen Victoria and the village of Skibbereen, which became an icon of the disaster after a journalist reported scenes of utter social collapse there in 1847. Though Victoria visited in 1849, folk memory often places her in Ireland during the bleakest year of 1847, confronted by the ghosts of the starving. Skibbereen was the site of unbelievable bleakness, with bodies lying in the streets and families infested by rats as they died. This framing highlights that the famine was a traumatic period of social collapse that drove a massive wave of Irish peasants to seek survival in New York and beyond. Scanlan notes that the story of Skibbereen represents the broader "backstory" of those who became the backbone of the American voting public. 11901 IRELAND

The Fragile Three-Legged Stool of Irish Agriculture. Guest: Patrick Scanlan. The discussion explores the specific mechanics of 19th-century Irish agriculture, which Scanlan describes as a "three-legged stool" of the potato, the pig, and turf fuel. The potato acted as the "glue" for a system that was surprisingly productive; Ireland was a major agricultural exporter of beef, pork, and oats to Great Britain despite its own poverty. The potato provided a high-yield food source that allowed landlords to pay extremely low wages while ensuring their workforce did not starve. On the eve of the famine, nearly 9 million people lived in Ireland, with 2 million relying exclusively on potatoes. Turf from bogs provided free fuel, and the pig served as a "walking bank account" used to pay rent. This system was functional in good years but dangerously fragile due to its total dependence on a single, cloned crop that lacked genetic diversity. 21846 IRELAND

Conquest and the Legacy of the Ulster Plantation. Guest: Patrick Scanlan. Batchelor and Scanlan trace the historical roots of land ownership in Ireland back to the conquests of Elizabeth I and Oliver Cromwell. Scanlan uses Shirley Castle in County Monaghan as an emblem of this era, noting the family were descendants of the Earl of Essex who received the land during the Ulster Plantation. The castle was a 19th-century faux-Tudor structure meant to evoke an ancient past, but it masked a modern economic reality: landlords were sophisticated merchants connected to global markets. Ireland was a place of extreme capital poverty despite being integrated into the British imperial economy through professional land managers and rent collection. Understanding this discrepancy is crucial, as the landscape looked medieval while operating as a modern merchant enterprise. Scanlan emphasizes that the Shirleys were not medieval overlords but modern businesspeople extracting value from a tenant population forced onto the land by conquest. 31947 IRELAND

An Oligarchy of Landlords and Forced Enslavement. Guest: Patrick Scanlan. The conversation highlights the staggering concentration of land ownership in the Victorian era, where a mere 4,000 people owned 80% of Ireland. Batchelor characterizes this as a form of "forced enslavement," noting that the Irish people never voted for this arrangement; it was imposed through historical conquest. Scanlan explains that while the UK's electorate was growing, it remained an oligarchy dominated by aristocrats and rising industrialists. The Irish landscape, though appearing ancient and low-tech, was systematically disadvantaged by its political structure. This segment emphasizes that the political and legal frameworks of the British Empire were responsible for the vulnerability of the tenant farmers. The systemic extraction of rent by absentee landlords ensured the peasantry had no financial buffer when crop failures struck. This historical "backstory" explains why the famine was so catastrophic for the millions who were eventually driven to emigrate. 41847

Malthusian Logic and the "Check" of Hunger. Guest: Patrick Scanlan. Scanlan discusses the influence of economist Thomas Robert Malthus on Victorian policy, noting his argument that population growth would inevitably outstrip food production. Malthus viewed famine as nature's "last most dreadful resource" to restore balance. For Victorian policymakers, this logic justified a refusal to provide direct aid to the poor, fearing it would encourage "imprudent" reproduction and laziness. They believed that without the "check" of hunger, the Irish would refuse to work for low wages. Malthus specifically viewed the potato as "too generous" because it allowed the poor to survive with minimal labor, bypassing the "civilizational checks" on population seen in other societies. Consequently, many British officials viewed the famine as an inevitable consequence of Irish behavior and population growth. This ideological framework heavily influenced the British Empire's preoccupation with maintaining a "work ethic" even amidst mass starvation. 51868

The Conacre System and the Disincentive for Improvement. Guest: Patrick Scanlan. This segment defines the "conacre" system, a type of high-priced, short-term lease common in Ireland for growing potatoes. Unlike in England, where landlords and tenants often shared the costs of improvements, Irish land was rented "soil only." This meant any improvements made by a tenant, such as building a canal or even whitewashing a cottage, could lead the landlord's agent to raise the rent. Scanlan illustrates this with an anecdote of a cottager who refused to paint his house for fear of a rent hike. This created a powerful disincentive for capital investment or upkeep, leading to a landscape that looked dilapidated. Scanlan argues that while Ireland was integrated into the UK economy, it was systematically disadvantaged by these forces. The economic vitality driving British prosperity was paradoxically "pulling the Irish economy apart at the seams" and leaving it vulnerable to collapse. 61874

Phytophthora Infestans: The Science of the Blight. Guest: Patrick Scanlan. The discussion turns to the biological cause of the famine: Phytophthora infestans, or the potato blight. Scanlan explains that Irish potatoes were grown from cuttings (clones), and this lack of genetic diversity made them uniquely vulnerable to pathogens. While Ireland had experienced localized crop failures before, the blight was a "novel pathogen" originating from Mexico. It traveled through the Americas before crossing the Atlantic to Europe in 1844–45. As a "water mold" that reproduces through spores, it spread rapidly on the wind across Ireland's dense monocrops. While the blight struck across Europe, the impact was most catastrophic in Ireland due to the population's profound dependence on the crop and a lack of alternative food sources. The organism encountered fields that had been separated from such pathogens for centuries, allowing it to sweep across every field it reached and destroy crops with unprecedented speed. 71873 QUEENSTOWN

The "Hungry Summer" and the Stench of Rot. Guest: Patrick Scanlan. Scanlan describes the unique horror of the blight's progression, noting that it struck potatoes both in the ground and in storage. Typically, the summer was the "hungry time" in Ireland as stocks ran low before the new harvest. However, P. infestans ensured that even harvested and stored potatoes rotted, removing any buffer for the starving peasantry. Witnesses described a distinctive, nauseating odor emanating from the blighted fields, which some likened to the smell of rotting human flesh. In previous crises, weather-related failures were often localized, but this epidemic was relentless and island-wide. The complete destruction of the staple crop meant that laborers who relied on potatoes for subsistence were left with absolutely nothing to eat or sell. This biological disaster, coupled with the existing economic fragility of the conacre system, turned a subsistence crisis into a total social calamity that the government was ill-prepared to handle. 81880 FAMINE

Send Kevin a Text MessageJeff Annison and Paul Scanlan, Emmy-winning co-founders of the world's first fan-owned entertainment company, Legion M, join host Kevin Goetz for a conversation about disrupting industries, building communities, and betting on the audience. Annison and Scanlan pioneered mobile television at MobiTV and launched the very first equity crowdfunding campaign in U.S. history. The duo have spent two decades proving that the audience is the most powerful force in entertainment.Chicago, Boston, and a Love of Film (01:48): Paul Scanlan traces his passion for filmmaking to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and to a family trip to Cape Cod where seeing Jaws at age five both terrified and captivated him. Jeff Annison arrived at storytelling through an unlikely path: a mechanical engineering degree at UCLA and a series of screenwriting classes taken on a lark.MobiTV: Putting Television on a Flip Phone (07:18): The two founders recount how a mutual friend with a micro-display technology brought them together in 1999 to build what would become MobiTV, the first company to stream live television to mobile phones.Colossal (25:49): Legion M's first major move was a small P&A investment alongside the distributor Neon on the Anne Hathaway film Colossal. With just 3,500 investors and a million dollars, they organized screenings and community meetups.Community as Marketing Engine (29:54): Annison and Scanlan explain how Legion M's 60,000-plus investors are an organic grassroots marketing force. As Scanlan puts it, communicating with their community costs nothing but can drive millions in box office.Saving Coyote vs. Acme (35:25): One of the most discussed projects in recent Hollywood history found new life through Catchup Entertainment. Legion M is partnering on its release, and the trailer has already surpassed 50 million views.Advice for the New Filmmaker (43:22): Annison urges emerging creators to start with the end in mind, thinking not just about the key scene but about how to communicate a story in a brief window of attention. Scanlan adds a hard truth: the industry is more entrepreneurial than most people expect, and selling to a major studio is rarely the path.On Being on the Side of the Audience (56:44): Annison reflects on what keeps him grounded amid industry uncertainty and the rise of AI: the belief that no matter what technology produces, only human beings pay to watch movies. Building a company on the side of the audience, he argues, is the most defensible position in entertainment.Host: Kevin GoetzGuest: Jeff Annison and Paul ScanlanProducer: Kari CampanoWriters: Kevin Goetz, Darlene Hayman, and Kari CampanoAudio Engineer: Gary Forbes (DG Entertainment)For more information about Legion M:Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legion_MWebsite: https://legionm.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/legionmofficial/For more information about Kevin Goetz:- Website: www.KevinGoetz360.com- Audienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678- How to Score in Hollywood: https://www.amazon.com/How-Score-Hollywood-Secrets-Business/dp/198218986X/- Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Substack: @KevinGoetz360- LinkedIn @Kevin Goetz- Screen Engine/ASI Website: www.ScreenEngineASI.com

SHOW SCHEDULE1-29-20261942 LANCASTER PA, ARMISTICE DAY IN WARTIME Guest: Anatol Lieven. Lieven of the Quincy Institute discusses breaking news that Vladimir Putin has agreed to a one-week ceasefire on Ukrainian cities following a request from Donald Trump. Lieven views this as a significant positive signal of Putin's desire to maintain good standing with the incoming administration, though he notes that major territorial disagreements remain unresolved. Guest: Anatol Lieven. The conversation turns to the $300 billion in suspended Russian assets. Lieven outlines Russia's proposal to use these funds for reconstruction or a joint investment fund to avoid confiscation, suggesting that suspending rather than lifting sanctions could be a political compromise to secure U.S. Senate approval. Guest: Chris Riegel. Riegel, CEO of Stratology, analyzes Elon Musk's pivot to manufacturing "Optimus" androids, arguing that California's restrictive tax and labor costs are driving the need for automation. He suggests that major retailers like Walmart are poised to replace significant portions of their workforce with robotics to maintain profitability amid rising economic pressures. Guest: Mariam Wahba. Wahba from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies reports on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria by jihadists and Fulani militants. She details a newly established White House working group designed to help the Nigerian government fix security gaps and enforce laws against the perpetrators of this religiously motivated violence. Guest: Mary Anastasia O'Grady. O'Grady of the Wall Street Journal critiques the Trump administration's engagement with Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodriguez. O'Grady warns that while Rodriguez is cooperating on oil exports, she remains a "vice dictator" managing rival factions to ensure the regime's survival while stalling on the release of political prisoners. Guest: Veronique de Rugy. De Rugy of the Mercatus Center examines the failure of Georgia's film tax credits, noting that productions eventually moved to cheaper locations despite billions in subsidies. She compares this to federal industrial policies like tariffs and Intel subsidies, arguing that government attempts to "pick winners" rarely produce sustainable economic results. Guest: Michael Toth. Toth of the Civitas Institute warns against new "climate superfund" legislation in states like New York, which seeks to retroactively tax fossil fuel companies for global warming. He characterizes these funds as unconstitutional attempts to regulate global emissions at the state level, arguing they will function as slush funds that drive up energy costs. Guest: Michael Toth. The segment focuses on California's strategy to empower the Attorney General to sue fossil fuel companies for rising insurance premiums. Toth argues these lawsuits are politically motivated and legally weak, noting that even insurance companies refuse to sue because attributing specific damages or deaths to corporate emissions is factually difficult. Guest: Professor Evan Ellis. Ellis of the U.S. Army War College reports that Cuba is facing a catastrophic energy collapse, with only days of oil remaining after Mexico and Venezuela cut supplies. He predicts this crisis will likely trigger a massive wave of migration as the island's power grid and economy face a near-total shutdown. Guest: Professor Evan Ellis. Ellis discusses the Costa Rican election, where center-right candidate Laura Fernandez holds a commanding lead. He describes her as a technocrat focused on combating drug-fueled crime and continuing pro-business policies, noting she is on track to potentially win the presidency in the first round. Guest: Professor Evan Ellis. Ellis evaluates Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, praising her pragmatic management of relations with the U.S. despite her leftist ideology. He notes she has navigated threats of tariffs and military intervention by cooperating on border security and extradition, while maintaining political dominance through her predecessor's powerful movement. Guest: Professor Evan Ellis. Ellis describes the unstable power dynamics in Venezuela, where the Rodriguezfaction cooperates with the U.S. on oil to prevent economic collapse. He warns that rival criminal factions, including the ELN and military figures, may sabotage this arrangement if they fear being betrayed or marginalized by the current leadership. Guest: Padraic Scanlan. Scanlan, author of Rot, introduces the history of the Irish Famine by recounting a folk story about Queen Victoria visiting the devastated village of Skibbereen. He sets the context by explaining how the pre-famine Irish economy relied entirely on the high-yield potato, which allowed landlords to pay incredibly low wages to a capital-poor population. Guest: Padraic Scanlan. Scanlan discusses the structure of Irish land ownership, using Shirley Castle as an example of the disconnect between landlords and tenants. He explains that while the landscape looked ancient, landlords were actually modern, sophisticated merchants who extracted rent from a tenant class living on small, unimproved plots known as "conacres." Guest: Padraic Scanlan. Scanlan explains the Victorian view of the famine through the lens of economist Thomas Malthus, who believed the "generous" potato encouraged overpopulation. He notes that Britishpolicymakers viewed the famine as a natural, inevitable correction and feared that providing aid would discourage the Irish poor from developing a "civilized" work ethic. Guest: Padraic Scanlan. Scanlan details the biological cause of the famine: Phytophthora infestans, a water mold that originated in Mexico. He explains that because Irish potatoes were genetically identical clones grown from cuttings, they had zero resistance to the pathogen, which destroyed both growing crops and stored food, leaving the population with no buffer against starvation.

Padraic X. Scanlan is the author of Rot: A History of the Irish Famine. Framing the crisis in Ireland within the broader picture of Empire, this book brings much to how we understood the events that reshaped Ireland. While the crisis recalls rural Ireland, Dublin was central to the story, as the location of the Castle Administration and a bustling port. In this episode we touch on the peculiar story of Alexis Soyer, chef to London's Reform Club, who would arrive in the city in 1847. Establishing a soup kitchen in front of the Royal Barracks, Soyer's intervention was widely condemned in the contemporary press. Rot is available now in all good bookshops.

In 1845, European potato fields from Spain to Scandinavia were attacked by a novel pathogen. But it was only in Ireland, then part of the United Kingdom, that the blight's devastation reached apocalyptic levels, leaving more than a million people dead and forcing millions more to emigrate.  In Rot, historian Padraic X. Scanlan offers the definitive account of the Great Famine, showing how Ireland's place in the United Kingdom and the British Empire made it uniquely vulnerable to starvation. Ireland's overreliance on the potato was a desperate adaptation to an unstable and unequal marketplace created by British colonialism. The empire's laissez-faire economic policies saw Ireland exporting livestock and grain even as its people starved. When famine struck, relief efforts were premised on the idea that only free markets and wage labor could save the Irish. Ireland's wretchedness, before and during the Great Famine, was often blamed on Irish backwardness, but in fact, it resulted from the British Empire's embrace of modern capitalism. Uncovering the disaster's roots in Britain's deep imperial faith in markets, commerce, and capitalism, Rot reshapes our understanding of the Great Famine and its tragic legacy. Our guest is: Dr. Padraic X. Scanlan, who is an associate professor at the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources and the Centre for Diaspora & Transnational Studies at the University of Toronto. Sanders said the question was “nonsense.” Is AOC more interested in running for president? 3:40pm- According to reports, The Atlantic's editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg was inadvertently added to a Signal group chat with Trump Administration officials discussing planned military strikes against Houthi fighters in Yemen. Spokesman for the White House National Security Council Brian Hughes said the messages Goldberg received appear to be “authentic.” In Goldberg's report, he noted that National Security Advisor Michael Waltz was responsible for the mistake and that he may have also violated a federal records law—as Waltz set some of the messages exchanged on Signal to auto-delete after one week. 4:05pm- Bill D'Agostino—Senior Research Analyst at Media Research Center—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to break down some of the best (and worst) clips from the Sunday shows including CNN being forced to admit 63% of Americans are in favor of the Trump Administration's deportation strategy and Elie Mystal's bizarre MSNBC appearance advocating to end all voter registration laws. 4:30pm- Jimmy Failla—Host of “Fox News Saturday with Jimmy Failla” & “Fox Across America with Jimmy Failla”—joins The Rich Zeoli Show from New York City. Despite needing to earn a reported $600 million to cover production and marketing costs, the film only grossed $43 million in its opening weekend. Part of the problem, according to reports, is Disney's unwillingness to put the film's star, Rachel Zegler, on an extended promotional tour due to her past controversial comments which have included criticisms of the original Snow White story, nasty comments about castmates, and profane remarks about President Donald Trump and his supporters. 5:30pm- Elizabeth Pipko— Spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the Trump Administration's successes, Alec Baldwin continually humiliating himself, and Snow White flopping at the box office. Pipko is a former model, a 2016 Trump campaign staffer, and author of the book, “Finding My Place: Making My Parents' American Dream Come True.” 6:05pm- During a Monday cabinet meeting, President Donald Trump noted that “many companies are now moving into the United States”—estimating that trillions of dollars of manufacturing is in the process of returning to the country. 6:15pm- Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY) have begun their cross-country “Fighting the Oligarchy” tour.
