Delighted to welcome legendary Event Producer & Creative Director Dan Tsu to 'The Clearing'. Dan was passed the "Golden Baton" to be here in the 'Clearing' by Performance Poet Toby Thompson.Dan is an Event Producer, Live Promoter, International Facilitator & Teacher of Event Management. Co-founder of the infamous Glastonbury Festival venue "Rum Shack", he has being hosting innovative and independent live shows for the last 15 years. Dan holds a reputation for championing and collaborating with young talent, working closely with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Akala & Kate Tempest, to name but some of many many more.Dan is also founder & director of the Live Events & Education company Lyrix Organix: A design consultancy for groundbreaking programmes, working collaboratively with major youth organisations and charities. Lyrix Organix uses rap, poetry, music & and cross-disciplinary approaches to amplify social action. When Dan Tsu describes himself as a ‘Jack of all Trades' he does not begin to do himself justice. As his name may suggest, Dan is mixed heritage: Anglo-Chinese, Singapore British, Hong Kong Chinese. At school Dan began to hone a particular skill in being able to be both an 'outlier' and an 'inlier', able to get the best from relationships around him. He made friends easily, with an ability to be able to move freely between a variety of different ethnic and religious groups, who all tended to sit in different corners of the classroom and not necessarily mix with each other in the playground. Dan was a free spirit, without an obvious ego, therefore able to weave his way into all kinds of diverse and interesting circles. He has always been inspired by words, poetry and by music like hip-hop and rap. His signature venue "Rum Shack" at the Glastonbury Festival is particularly important to him, as is Glastonbury implicitly for its unique authenticity & ‘irreplaceable and indescribable' spirit.Dan created early opportunities for the now superstar singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran and the rising star performance-poet, Toby Thompson, as well as scores of others. Dan does not speak Chinese but he is still inspired by the iconic Chinese artist and activist Ai Wei Wei. Dan's personal goal is to ‘change the world in small ways.'As a facilitator, educator, events producer and creative director, Dan Tsu is creating his own dynamic legacy, on a daily basis. He is delighted when people acknowledge the difference he has made to their lives - which people regularly do now, in random encounters, on average now once or twice a week!Dan sees himself as a Londoner. Happy both in the darkest corner of a lively nightclub or in the solitude of ancient woodland in Dulwich. An extraordinary & distinctive story indeed.Enjoy!Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'.

After its enforced break, the RBP podcast returns for its first remotely-recorded episode. Mark, Barney & Jasper — all splendidly self-isolated, if not entirely locked down — are reunited online to run through everything that's new or free on Rock's Backpages. Noting the sad losses of Cristina, Manu Dibango and Fountains Of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger — all recent victims of the virus – RBP's troika discuss the week's new audio interview, a 2000 conversation with a supremely droll Warren Zevon, who talks to Adam Sweeting about Jackson Browne, David Geffen and Scottish Makar poet William Dunbar. From there, they move on to the week's free feature, which focuses on the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis' groundbreaking Bitches Brew. RBP's very own Three Degrees revisit Richard Williams' original Melody Maker review of the 1970 album, along with Al Aronowitz's account of hanging out with Miles in the fall of that year. As someone who has been successful in many different genres, when Kate Tempest has an idea, how does she decide what it will be? In Simon Armitage's wooden writing shed in the garden, surrounded on all sides by the Pennine Hills and the Pennine weather, their conversation ranges from moving to rural France after growing up in south London, her time at the Brit School and her discovery of rapping to writing poetry. They discuss using the tongue as a weapon and the power of words, and Kate reads from Simon's reworking of the comic medieval poem The Owl and the Nightingale. If the poets of the past sat in their garrets dipping their quills in ink and waiting for inspiration to strike, our current Poet Laureate Simon Armitage has a more mundane and domestic arrangement, scratching away at a poem in the shed. Any distraction is welcome, even encouraged, to talk about poetry, music, art, sheds, sherry, owls, nightingales and to throw light on some of the poem's internal themes .
Poet Laureate Simon Armitage is a former probation officer, DJ and a poet celebrated for his witty and profound take on modern life. In this podcast, he invites guests to join him in the writing shed in his garden to talk about life, language and the human voice. Surrounded on all sides by the Pennine hills and the Pennine weather, Simon welcomes, even encourages, the distractions his guests offer through talk of music, art, sheds, sherry and his latest poetic undertaking: a translation of the Middle English poem The Owl and the Nightingale. Over 12 episodes, guests include acclaimed spoken word performer Kate Tempest, Turner Prize recipient Antony Gormley, model and actress Lily Cole, DJ and Elbow frontman Guy Garvey, actress Maxine Peake, poet Jackie Kay and World Record beatboxing champion Testament.

Face it. Bernard Fowler has a better job than you. Not only does he release his own solo work, like his new album, Inside Out, he has also toured the world singing with the Rolling Stones for more than thirty years. He first started working with Mick Jagger on his solo album, She's the Boss, in 1985. Producer Bill Laswell had told Fowler he had a job for him in London, but didn't tell him with whom until he got in the same room with Jagger. As he tells me, he was more than surprised. But he aced the job, so when the Stones were getting ready to record Steel Wheels, Fowler got the nod to sing in the studio and on tour. He took charge of his part in the recording, going so far as to tell the guys to stop rolling tape so he could make suggestions. He has been firmly ensconced in that world ever since, touring and recording on Stones albums and solo albums, and writing with Ronnie Wood. As he says, he's watched their children grow up. The new album is a tribute to the Stones done in a spoken-word style, which helps brings out the stories in the lyrics. And it's not just a greatest hits package. He does “Sympathy For the Devil, which you heard on last week's episode, but other than that, Fowler takes a deeper dive with cuts like “Dancing With Mr. D,” “Sister Morphine,” and “All the Way Down.” Fowler is happy to report that after his recent heart problems, Jagger is looking pretty spry onstage. And Fowler thinks the Stones are a better band now than they ever have been, and tells me why later in the interview. He says what he's mainly learned from the band is that if you love what you do, you can do it for a long time, and at a very high level. He also says there are a few songs on the new tour's set list that might surprise people. Although it's obviously a big part of his world, there's more to Fowler than his work with the Stones. “When I'm not singing for the Rolling Stones,” he says, “in my world, I'm the Mick Jagger.” Over the years, he's been a part of bands like Tackhead, Nicklebag (that's “bag,” not “back”), and Little Axe. He's also done session work on albums by Herbie Hancock, Bootsy Collins, Philip Glass, Duran Duran, Public Image, Ltd., and many others. We even talk about a short stint working with Steven Seagal, which Fowler was not at all happy I brought up, but I do love his reaction to that line of questioning. I spoke to him before a rehearsal with the Stones in London for the new tour, which kicks off this week at Soldier Field in Chicago. You can actually hear him getting his things together to go toward the end, and there are a couple of places where the connection dips a bit, but I hated to lose any of the great stuff Fowler was saying.

When Kate Tempest released a song titled "Europe Is Lost" in late 2015, she showed a eerily foreshadowing fury that preceded the seemingly unending discord of 2016. On the track's parent album, 2016's Let Them Eat Chaos, Tempest reaffirms her status as a singular figure that's both thrillingly evocative and frighteningly prescient. Tempest doesn't hold anything back during this performance on KEXP's broadcast from Iceland Airwaves 2016, which is a marvel from start to finish.
