London and Ibiza based singer and songwriter Nick Mulvey has always been immersed in the world of music. Before launching his solo career in 2012, Nick gathered a treasure trove of musical experiences. He studied music and art in Havana, Cuba, and was an integral part of the Mercury Award-nominated Portico Quartet. Nick's debut album, "First Mind" was a remarkable debut that left a lasting impression on all who listened. Since then, he has continued to create music and tour whenever possible, balancing his roles as a devoted dad and a beloved musician. In Nick's short cinematic film, which expands on the themes of "Begin Again," he says: "We are living through an incredible shift. The old ways are dying, right before our very eyes." The guest in this Electronic Beats Podcast is Hania Rani, an award-winning pianist, composer and singer hailing from Gdansk in Poland. Hania was initially inspired to study classical music and was later introduced to jazz and electronics at music school, widening her interests and as she puts it, “mixing Chopin & Schostakovitch with Dave Brubeck and Moderat”. Other inspirations include composers such as Max Richter, Esbjorn Svensson, Miles Davis, Nils Frahm, Murcof, Portico Quartet, Radiohead and even The Beatles. But Rani's inspirations aren't just musical, she has drawn inspiration from places she has lived and visited. Over the past few years Rani's music has gained widespread recognition, earning many acclamations such as the Sanki Award as the “New Face of Polish Music” and Transatlantyk Golden Ark Award for “Best Young Polish Composer” amongst others. Recent years have seen Hiani scoring soundtracks for several movies, collaborating with the likes of Portico Quartet and Christian Löffler and performing live shows for ARTE and Cercle, her unfaltering drive has made Rani one of the most intriguing artists in the contemporary classical world. In this episode our Host Lindi Delight speaks with her about initial spark for her love for music, first touch with the piano, meaning of improvisation, classic and neoclassic music, Melancholie and much more.

In the tradition of the English troubadour, Nick Mulvey is a soulful multi-instrumentalist, an Earth protector, and a student of Celtic Shamanism. Most importantly, he is generous with his insights for young artists. This podcast flows in three parts, first we discuss Nick's musical background from studying in Havana at nineteen, to playing hang drum with Portico Quartet, to his embodied solo career as a singer-songwriter. We then discuss Nick's pilgrimage to Embercombe in Southwest England where Mac McCartney taught him the spiritual nourishment of Northern European indigeneity and shamanism. Finally we explore Nick's work as an environmental protector and his recent experience at COP26. Throughout the conversation, Nick drops beautiful gems of wisdom for emerging artists and offers playful backstories for some of his most popular songs. Nick Mulvey is an English musician and a passionate environmentalist. He studied ethnomusicology at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London where he was a founding member of the band Portico Quartet. Nick released his Mercury Prize-nominated solo album “First Mind” in 2014, following it up three years later with “Wake Up Now.” His most recent album “Begin Again,” explores reconnection to his ancestral roots.   I have done several train mixes over the years. They basically come about because I hear a tune and think - Hey, that would be great in a train mix. So it was with this one. I heard the track "A.O.E." by Portico Quartet and I knew immediately that I need to build a mix around it. This mix differs from most of my other train mix(except one) because it's mostly a jazz influenced mix. Berlin-school sequencers have been replaced by a drum kit and synth washes are now horns. I folded in some recordings of trains and subways but I didn't want to over do it so I kept to 3 spots in the mix. Links to all the albums used in order of how they appear in this mix: https://porticoquartet.bandcamp.com/album/monument https://nickgarbett.bandcamp.com/album/the-glider https://snowpalms.bandcamp.com/album/land-waves https://tangents.bandcamp.com/album/new-bodies https://elskavonjohnhayes.bandcamp.com/album/du-nord https://nalasinephro.bandcamp.com/album/space-18 https://porticoquartet.bandcamp.com/album/terrain https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DCDQG7K/ref=dm_ws_sp_ps_dp https://bellorchestre.bandcamp.com/album/house-music https://eremiterecords.bandcamp.com/album/mandatory-reality https://danielbrandt1.bandcamp.com/album/eternal-something https://alapastel.bandcamp.com/album/ceremony   The mix has some good energy and I could see it being a great companion for bike riding. Discovering a band all to yourself is the best type of music discovery there is. One day in the mid 2000s as my wife and I wandered along London's South Bank, we were stopped in our tracks by music the likes of which we'd never heard before - jazzy, rhythmic, with a haunting steel drum but also with an element of ‘indie'. There, were four very young men (then in their late teens) busking with a confident authority - more a private performance than a busk, and with quite an audience too. That band was Portico Quartet and we were just two of many thousands of early adopter  fans from those early South Bank busks outside The National Gallery. We bought a copy of the band's very first, self-pressed four-track CD for £5, one of 10,000 sold I recently discovered. When I spoke with Duncan Bellamy (drums and the hang steel drum) and Jack Wylie (sax) for The Art of Longevity, Jack told me:"We'd go off to buy big stacks of blank CDs at Maplins, and we bought this burner machine that could do eight at a time. I think we managed to do 200-250 a day. As a student, it meant we could make a living without working in a bar. It was great fun”. I put it to Duncan and Jack that they would have to achieve 10 million streams to make the equivalent revenues now (20 million if splitting revenues 50:50 with a record label). Who'd have thought that, as part of establishing an early following as an instrumental band, you could create your own perfectly viable business model as well? For the Portico Quartet, those early years of ‘struggle' were more like an exercise in building a cottage industry. From those early days, the Portico Quartet's rise was as meteoric as it gets for an instrumental band. In 2008 came the Mercury Music Prize nomination for their full debut album ‘Knee Deep in the North Sea' and one year later the band signed to Real World Records, the independent label owned by Peter Gabriel. That came with a huge leap in the maturity of their sound (2009's Isla) and a full stop to the days of busking. As a fan, observing the band's musical development has been a truly remarkable experience but don't take my word for it, listen to Duncan and Jack's take on things...Support the show (https://www.songsommelier.com)

Stunde 2 präsentierte dann u.a. Musik von Seefeel, Delhia De France, John Frusciante, Desire Marea, F.S. Blumm & Nils Frahm, Aparde, The Orb & Lee Scratch Perry und dem Portico Quartet.
