Corinne Bailey Rae independently released one of our favorite albums of 2023: Black Rainbows. Justin Richmond spoke to Corinne over Zoom at the end of the year about the place that inspired the album, the Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago. And then when she came to Los Angeles around Grammy time they decided to meet up to discuss Reflections / Refractions At the Stony Island Arts Bank, a beautiful new book Corinne put together to catalogue the items that inspired her new music and creative awakening. The conversation touches on Corinne recording her third album, The Heart Speaks in Whispers, at Capital in Hollywood, to finding her spiritual home in Chicago, to discovering a mid-century New York subway pageant that inspired her raucous song, “New York Transit Queen.” You can hear a playlist of some of our favorite Corinne Bailey Rae songs HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Chris' guest in this episode is Leeds born singer songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae. Though Corinne appeared to have success straight away with her first single, 'Like A Star', she'd already been through the painful process of having her first band fall apart - the punky 3 piece Helen she'd formed with friends. But a change in musical direction - partly inspired by work at a jazz club - yielded immediate success from 2005 onwards. And Corinne's enjoyed a remarkable career including a string of hit singles and albums, Grammy and Mobo awards, a tour with John Legend and a performance with Herbie Hancock at The White House.
Chat with the English singer about growing up in Leeds, telling black stories through music and personal relationship tragedy. She will be in Dublin in May for ‘Rock Against Homelessness' in aid of Focus Ireland Details: https://www.3olympia.ie/whats-on/rock-against-homelessness/

One reviewer said of Corinne Bailey Rae's new album, Black Rainbows: "It sounds like a departure, but feels like a renaissance." In this episode, Corinne Bailey Rae discusses how industry expectations and massive success had begun to infiltrate her own creativity, and how meeting Chicago artist Theaster Gates, and visiting his Stony Island Arts Bank propelled Corinne Bailey Rae into a transformative period of songwriting and the multidisciplinary project now known as Black Rainbows, and how allowing herself to remove all preconceived notions of her persona ultimately becoming the most fully expressed representation of who she is as an artist and a woman.
In “The Underworld,” journalist Susan Casey takes readers into the deep ocean to explore volcanoes, trenches, and a booming ecosystem that's vital to our survival. Corinne Bailey Rae is an English singer/songwriter whose career started with a bang. In 2006 her debut album topped UK charts and was certified triple platinum with the help of her first hit single, “Put Your Records On.” A slew of awards and other “best new artist” distinctions followed. As she released subsequent albums, Corinne aspired to stretch herself as an artist beyond neo-soul pop-music success. In September, Corinne Bailey Rae released her excellent, genre-hopping fourth album, Black Rainbows. It's an album inspired by her time spent exploring Chicago's historic Stony Island Arts Bank—a vast collection of Black cultural relics and writing. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Corinne Bailey Rae about the years she spent in the Arts Bank archives and the stories that inspired her new work. She also talks about her record label's exhaustive effort trying to push her to recreate the success of her first album. And how an indie skateboarding magazine helped clarify the look of her new album. Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Laphonza Butler to complete Senator Dianne Feinstein's term in the Senate. Will she run for the full term? U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, 90, died last week. The centrist sought bipartisan solutions and advocated for gun control, reproductive rights, and environmental issues. The Supreme Court's term begins today, and this year the justices will consider big cases concerning the administrative state, free speech, voting rights, and guns. The Renaissance and Eras Tours are hitting the big screen. It's an economic boost and a way for fans to access the musicians without spending big bucks on live concerts. English chanteuse Corinne Bailey Rae made her world wide live radio debut on MBE when we kicked off 2006 with a week's worth of broadcasts from the BBC in London, and returned to the big show a few months later when she touched down in Southern California before becoming a superstar. While not prolific, Corinne's albums are a treat from top to bottom. Her newly-minted fourth album Black Rainbows took years to make and is inspired by the artwork and objects collected by Theaster Gates at the Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago.
Corinne Bailey Rae of “Put Your Records On” fame has released her fourth studio album, called 'Black Rainbows.' It was largely inspired by Theaster Gates' arts-focused restoration of The Stony Island Arts Bank, a former community savings and loan building in the south side of Chicago that has been transformed into what's been described as a cathedral of Black art. On this episode, Corinne Bailey Rae talks about the history of the building and what kind of art and artifacts it now showcases, and how those collections have inspired songs on the record. She also talks about getting "extraterrestrial" on this album as she explored the idea of transformation.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Corinne Bailey Rae returns with her first album in seven years, titled Black Rainbows. The album was inspired by Rae's visits to the Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago, a gallery/library/community center dedicated to Black art and history. She joins us for a Listening Party. This segment is guest-hosted by David Furst.
To discuss the how and why of lists, Nuala is joined by Joanna Nolan, author of the book, Listful, and Lucy Ireland Gray, who put together a collection of about 200 shopping lists that she found discarded over the course of nearly 20 years in and around Hertfordshire, where she lives. We consider the psychology of lists - in particular why and whether lists are good or bad for our mental health and creativity. Artist Alice Instone, Joanna Nolan, author of Listful, and Madeleine Dore, the author of, I didn't do the thing today: On letting go of productivity guilt, join Nuala. Lists in the public domain - with Nuala to discuss the good and bad of lists historically and in contemporary times, are journalist and writer Helen Lewis, author of Difficult women: A history of feminism in eleven fights, and writer Anne Sebba, author of 10 non-fiction books. Her most recent book is Ethel Rosenberg: A Cold War Tragedy. The place of lists in music - songs with lists, the charts, playlists and more. Nuala is joined by Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae, whose album, Black Rainbows, is out in September, and music journalist Jude Rogers, the author of The sound of being human: How music shapes our lives. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Lucinda Montefiore
