PopaHALLics #142 "Aren't You Somebody?"We know the face, but not the name, whether that's members of the Eagles (biography "Life in the Fast Lane") or comedian Martin Short being mistaken for a waiter (memoir "I Must Say"). But being somebody can also apply to coming into your own, whether you're seeking your first orgasm after a terminal diagnosis ("Dying for Sex") or finding new purpose in your life in a tiny Arctic village ("North of North"). Welcome to this episode's pop offerings!Streaming:"North of North," Netflix. A goodhearted, if bumbling, Inuk woman (Anna Lambe) tries to reinvent herself in this warm, lighthearted comedy set in a tiny Arctic town. Also starring Maika Harper as her feisty mother and Mary Lynn Rajskub (Chloe on "24") as her boss"Dying for Sex," Hulu, FX, Disney +. In this comedy drama based on a real woman's podcast and memoir, Molly (Michelle Williams) is diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer and decides to explore her sexual desires before it's too late. With Jenny Slate, Rob Delaney, Sissy Spacek and Jay Duplass."Small Things Like These," Hulu. A coal merchant (Cillian Murphy) uncovers disturbing secrets about the convent in an Irish village. This 2024 historical drama is adapted from Claire Keegan's novel. Books:"Life in the Fast Lane: The Eagles' Reckless Ride Down the Rock & Roll Highway," by Mick Wall. This no-holds-barred biography written with rock 'n roll attitude traces the rise of one of the best-selling acts of all time. And how money, cocaine, and egos affected their relationships and music."A Thousand Threads," by Neneh Cherry. This joyful autobiography looks at the fascinating life of the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter. She grew up in a bohemian family in Stockholm, New York, and London. Her own music—a mix of punk funk, hip hop, and UK street soul—helped usher in a new wave of black British club culture."I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Genius," by Martin Short. This 2014 memoir is funny, heartfelt, and chock full of celebrities (from buddies like Steve Martin to cringey encounters with Sinatra, Hepburn, and Tony Bennett). It's surprisingly poignant, as Short recounts the loss of a beloved brother and his parents by age 20 and his wife Nancy's battle with cancer. The memoir was published seven years before "Only Murders in the Building" would make Short a TV star again.Music:PopaHALLics #142 Playlist (Eagles) features the California band's hits as well as music from Neneh Cherry (memoir "A Thousand Threads") and her talented family. It's eclectic—and fun!Click through the links to watch, read, and listen to what we're talking about.
Sonja de Friez reviews A Thousand Threads by Neneh Cherry published by Penguin
British fashion designer Martine Rose has reshaped menswear and brought her village with her. A true ‘designer's designer', she is the force behind the self-titled label proudly worn by Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Neneh Cherry, Timothée Chalamet and A$AP Rocky, to name but a few. Her subcultural silhouettes have influenced everyone from Demna – who called her in during his early Balenciaga years – to mastodons like Nike and Supreme. On this very special episode of The Most, Martine welcomes Dominique into her London studio for a rare, walls-down conversation spanning 20-plus years of creating, honouring and shifting culture. From her polychrome childhood and early nightlife tales to creative breakthroughs, business chin-falls and industry recognition. She speaks about growing up in a multi-generational home where proud Black Panther politics, music and an embrace of eccentricity planted the roots of the designer she'd become. And yes, she also answers *that* creative director question. From trailblazing at Balenciaga Men's and steering Nike into new lanes to the enduring power of her team and cheeky, humorous resilience – this is a portrait of a designer whose intuition and refusal to conform have built a legacy like no other. Our guest today is a maverick of music, an agent provocateur whose visually arresting image, razor sharp humour and mentally challenging music helped forge that most enduring of sub-cultures; 'Goth'. Back in the early 1980s when the post-punk counter culture embraced film noir and turned the technicolor of glam into a more sinister monochromatic look, festooned with spider webs, skulls and too much eye-liner Nik Fiend was one of the original bad-taste makers at London's The Batcave club. 'Alien Sex Fiend' along with 'The Specimen' and 'Sex Gang Children' made regular appearances at the infamous Batcave. Together they helped establish the look and feel of the early Goth scene in the south, where the likes of Nick Cave, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Bauhaus, Foetus, Robert Smith and even a freshly crimped and spiked Elizabeth Hurley were all regular attendees. The world has of course never been the same, and while music and fashion constantly evolve there is alway the reverberation of the gothic asthetic. Mr & Mrs Fiend continue to create and celebrate chaos around the world, finding success on US college radio, getting 'big in Japan' and spreading their tendrils throughout continental Europe. Uncompromising, often hilarious, always a little bit shocking Alien Sex Fiend are a national treasure who have been hidden in the basement for far too long. Before we talk to Nik we do that thing we love to do, we talk about a completely different type of music! This month we are very pleased to speak to Alex Coles about his excellent book on Jazz Fusion. It is beautiful object and a fascinating discussion about how Jazz can be fused with all manner of musical styles and add to the overall effect. The discussion takes in Sinatra, Joni Mitchell, Charlie Mingus, Kendrick Lamar and Neneh Cherry. We also set aside a few minutes to discussing the giant hole in Deb's flat. Hosted on Acast. Recorded live at Bailey's HQ in London, singer-songwriter, rapper, producer and Women's Prize 2025 longlisted author Neneh Cherry discusses her career, the power of women and the process of writing her deeply personal memoir, A Thousand Threads. Neneh first achieved global success in 1988, with 'Buffalo Stance', a groundbreaking mix of music genres. She has released six critically acclaimed studio albums and won two Brit Awards, an MTV Europe Music Award and was nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist. Neneh has collaborated with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Cher, Four Tet, Gorillaz to name just a few. And her most recent album, The Versions, a compilation of reworked songs from her back catalogue, features SIA, Robyn and many others. It was released in 2022. Neneh recently published her beautiful memoir, A Thousand Threads, which tells the story of her journey to becoming the artist and woman she is today. It also shines a light on her family; the extraordinary three generations of artists and musicians that are her inheritance, and legacy. Neneh's book choices are: ** Beloved by Toni Morrison **The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar ** Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes ** White Teeth by Zadie Smith **There are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak Vick Hope, multi-award winning TV and BBC Radio 1 presenter, author and journalist, is the host of season eight of the Women's Prize for Fiction Podcast.
Send us a textFascinating, sometimes unexpected pairings and groupings are the name of the game on this week's @weheardwonders podcast. Iain and Andrew share their favourite musical mash-ups, before moving on to review five collaboration-heavy new projects. Bobby Gillespie lives out his noirish, faded glamour fantasies alongside Mr & Mrs of French garage-rock The Limiñanas; DARKSIDE expand to a trio and jam out; Richard Russell and assorted friends turn existential on the latest Everything Is Recorded document; Sun Ra acolyte Marshall Allen enlists Neneh Cherry and proves it's never too late to take centre-stage; while Japanese folk singer Ichiko Aoba and composer Taro Umebayashi once again take a deep dive into the fantastical. Today's guest is Celeste Bell, daughter of the one and only Poly Styrene, a woman who was an absolute punk icon. If you know that name, then you'll definitely know songs like Art-I-Ficial, Junk Food Junkie and Identity which Poly sang as the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Through her music Poly Styrene inspired the likes of Neneh Cherry, FKA Twigs and many more, but it wasn't just her music, it was her attitude. Sadly Poly passed in 2011 from breast cancer, but I reached out to her daughter Celeste after seeing the brilliant documentary she directed, entitled Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche. In this episode Celeste shares on her mother's mental health - and how being misdiagnosed made things worse - as well as the things that made Poly happy, such as makeup, dressing up, reading magazines and enjoying a spa day. Celeste also shares her own experiences of motherhood, which inevitably draw comparisons with how she was raised by a mother who was often overwhelmed by life. By the way, right near the end Celeste shares a hilarious story about women in punk, so be sure to keep listening! TW: themes of religion, cults, mental health. By the way, look out for my video on Poly, especially if this is the first time you're learning about her. I'd love to know what you thought of this one, so if you're listening on Spotify be sure to drop a comment, as I can actually respond now!

If you were a teenager in the late 80s you only have to hear the name Neneh Cherry to conjure the image of Neneh, seven months pregnant, on the Top of the Pops stage performing her hit Buffalo Stance. She was the epitome of cool. She made teenage girls everywhere believe that anything was possible. Now, almost 40 years later, the award-winning singer, songwriter, rapper, producer, mother of three, stepmother of one, grandmother of four, has lived - and continues to live - the most incredible life. She has released six critically acclaimed albums, won two Brits and been nominated for a Grammy. And now she has written a memoir that takes us from her peripatetic childhood moving between Sweden and New York with her mother Swedish artist Moki Karlsson and her step-dad jazz trumpeter Don Cherry to the present day. It quite honestly blew me away. A Thousand Threads takes those strands and weaves them into a story of creativity and collaboration, love and loss, motherhood and daughterhood, and above all what it means to be a woman. I inhaled it. (And if you're in the market I highly recommend having Neneh read it to you on audible.) Neneh and I got on zoom to talk about home, family, losing her mother Moki at just 66 and losing herself to grief and menopause, finding pleasure in the little things, being a gran, staying creative forever and so so much more. TBH teenage Sam is beside herself right now. I hope you love this as much as I loved making it. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including A THOUSAND THREADS BY NENEH CHERRY and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. This week, we're joined by Joel Reader to talk about Neneh Cherry's 1989 hit “Buffalo Stance,” a bold, genre-blending anthem that poses the age-old question, “Who's that gigolo on the street?” In an era when female hip-hop was just breaking into the mainstream, Neneh brought a fiercely feminist tone that feels more relevant now than ever. Together, Joel, Matt, and I dig into the song's fearless style and attitude, asking whether Neneh Cherry deserves to be celebrated beyond this iconic track. Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textThis episode, we look at what Rolling Stone magazine considers to be the best songs of the 80's. We have been critical of Rolling Stone in the past for the quality of their lists, and this time is no different. However, there's some good stuff in this list, which we're happy to acknowledge. Of course, we point out their failings as well – it'd be no fun if we didn't, would it?! In Rock News, we look at a new album from Coldplay (as if anybody cares!), the trials of Sean “Puffy” Combs, and The Beatles. Our “Album You Must listen to Before you Die” is 1985's The Nation's Saving Grace, by The Fall. Mick loves it, Jeff doesn't think much of it. So, what's new? Another fun episode. Enjoy. Hurricane Milton landed today in Florida, battering the US state with winds of around 120 miles per hour. Residents were warned to evacuate for their own safety - but some have stayed. Professor of Risk and Hazard at Durham University Lucy Easthope joins Anita Rani to look at the women who stay behind in these situations, and their reasons behind this, as well as whether disaster planning reflects gender differences.A Tupperware of Ashes is a play which follows an ambitious Michelin-Star chef, Queenie, played by Meera Syal. It's a family drama about life, immigration and the Indian spiritual cycle of death and rebirth written by playwright Tanika Gupta. Both women join Anita to talk about the play which is currently on at the National Theatre. A new report from the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, BPAS, looks into what women want from contraception, the innovations in non-hormonal contraception, and the contraceptive options available to men. Anita is joined by CEO of BPAS Heidi Stewart and 28-year-old Charlotte whose contraceptive pill gave her severe migraines for more than two years before the connection was made. Swedish singer-songwriter, rapper and producer Neneh Cherry first achieved global success in 1988 with her hit Buffalo Stance. She now has released a beautiful and personal memoir, A Thousand Threads. Neneh joins Anita to talk more about her life and career, and the stories she tells in the book. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Lottie Garton
If you'd told the 12-year-old me, listening to Manchild and Buffalo Stance on repeat at school in Belfast, that I would one day be interviewing Neneh Cherry, I wouldn't have believed you. This woman is so iconic and has shaped so much of our culture - it's not just her monster hits such as Seven Seconds (with Youssou N'Dour) or the fact that Massive Attack recorded their seminal first album in her bedroom, or that she's met everyone from James Baldwin to Chuck D, it's also that all three of her children are musicians too, including her daughter, chart-topping popstar Mabel (and former How To Fail guest - you can listen to her episode here). Neneh joins me to talk about an unconventional and itinerant upbringing, surrounded by music, art and expression. We chat about creativity and self-doubt, about motherhood and sisterhood and about how she once spectacularly failed to make pizza for Ian Dury. Neneh's beautiful memoir ‘A Thousand Threads' is out now. Have something to share of your own? I'd love to hear from you! Back in 1989, Neneh Cherry released her debut album. Raw Like Sushi was a smash in the UK and here in Australia. This young Swede based in London caught all of our attention, and through the 90's she'd release two more albums before taking a breather from music. But her creative life began way earlier. With an artist mother and jazz legend Don Cherry as her stepfather, Neneh's childhood was a life less ordinary. She split it between commune-style living in rural Sweden and loft apartments in New York, and when she moved to London as a teen, she fell in with some of that city's most creative punks – people she remains friends with to this day.Her story is wild, which is why - back in 2019 - I invited her to Take 5. As we mark 35 years since that debut, I'm dusting this gem off to share it again with you. Settle in for a convo with one of the greats, and an extraordinary chat about the power of song.Tanya Winley - 'Vicious Rap'Stevie Wonder - 'Living For The City'Frank Ocean - 'Seigfried'Dice Ailes - 'Otedola'Nina Simone - 'Mississippi Goddam'

Beim "Plainsong" macht The Cure auch genau, was der Titel sagt. [...] Michael Berkeley's guest is the film-maker, producer and writer Mark Cousins. His documentary work includes The Story of Film, an epic 900-minute journey through the history of cinema, from the earliest moving images in the late 19th century to the digital innovations of our own times. Mark has interviewed many of the most significant directors and actors of the past half century, and with Tilda Swinton he created the Screen Machine, a large portable cinema which they and their supporters sometimes pulled by hand through the Scottish Highlands. Mark's choices of film music range from Doris Day and Henry Mancini to a score by Alfred Schnittke and a song from Neneh Cherry.

Content warning: This episode contains discussion of sexual violence (22:45–24:55). In this episode we welcome the excellent Barbara Ellen, who joins us on Zoom all the way from... well, the other side of London, actually. (It's a long story.) Barbara talks us through her illustrious writing career from zines such as her own Wax Lyrical and Ooh Gary, Gary (a footie zine dedicated entirely to one G. Lineker, Esq.) via ZigZag (in its Goth phase) to the golden decade she spent in the pages and offices of the NME. Always highly amusing in print, our guest is no less hilarious in (virtual) person – especially when recalling her 1987 interview with Guns N' Roses. But Barbara is also capable of reverence and seriousness, not least when speaking of the revelatory interview Madonna granted her in 1995. It's back to belly-laughs when we turn our attention to news of the planned sequel to This is Spinal Tap. A clip from Gavin Martin's 2009 audio interview with Tap axeman Nigel Tufnel (a.k.a. the 4th Baron Haden-Guest) has us all in stitches as we debate the wisdom or otherwise of attempting Spinal Tap 2. Another audio clip – of the late Genesis P-Orridge explaining why Santa Claus was originally a shaman – is almost as funny. After Mark quotes from interviews with Janis Joplin, Neneh Cherry and Thom Yorke, Barney cites splendid conversations with Beatles boffin Mark Lewisohn and power-balladeering songsmith Diane Warren. Finally, Jasper concludes the episode with his thoughts on Sophie Ellis-Bextor, muzak and a Hip Hop anniversary. Many thanks to special guest Barbara Ellen. Pieces discussed: Guns N' Roses, The NME, Madonna, Goldberg on Spinal Tap, Staunton on Spinal Tap, Genesis P-Orridge audio, Essra Mohawk by Michael Watts, Essra Mohawk by Max Bell, Janis Joplin, Lester Bangs, Neneh Cherry, Thom Yorke, Mark Lewisohn on the Beatles, Dianne Warren, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Elevator Muzak and 40 years of Hip Hop.

August 11, 2023 marks 50 years to the day since hip-hop was born. It's a genre, a scene, a philosophy that has changed the world; not just in music, but in culture, communication, and how we see ourselves. Over the years I've had the great pleasure of chatting with a ton of hip-hop legends, so I'm dusting off the crate and digging into Take 5's past to share some of my favourites on this big anniversary. You'll travel to Queens with Mike D, hear Neneh Cherry shout out a pioneer in the game, and witness a young Sampa the Great talk about her hero. Ice Cube will tell you about when rap said something more, and Common will find it's beautiful rallying power. Long live hip-hop. 50 years young, it changed everything, it gave so many a voice, and it continues to morph, empower, and bounce us into the future. In 2022 Sonia Boyce became the first Black British woman to represent Britain at the Venice Biennale exhibition. She also took home the coveted Golden Lion Award for her installation Feeling Her Way, which combined video and collage with improvised performances by five female musicians. Sonia was born in London and grew up near the renowned Whitechapel Art Gallery. As a very young child she would visit the gallery, often alone, relishing the light and space inside the building. In 1985, two years after graduating from Stourbridge College of Art, she completed her drawing Missionary Position II, which was acquired by the Tate two years later. She was just 25 and was one of the youngest artists and the first Black woman to enter its permanent collection. In 1999 Sonia started work on the Devotional Collection, an archive of sound, ephemera and wallpaper relating to black British women in music, ranging from Shirley Bassey to Neneh Cherry, and celebrating their contribution to international culture. Sonia lives in London with her partner, the curator David A. Bailey. She has taught Fine Art studio practice for more than 30 years in several art colleges across the UK. She was awarded an OBE in the 2019 New Year Honours for services to art.
