During our live interview with Skye Edwards and Ross Godfrey of Morcheeba, I found myself at one stage scrolling through my notes to find a description of the band's sound I'd queried using Chat GPT. I couldn't find it at the time but here is what it said:“Morcheeba's signature rich, mellow music became the soundtrack of the suburban homes and chillout rooms of the late 90s and early 00s”.That's a composite of much that has been written about the band over some 30 years, and it doesn't really flatter does it? “The devil's own lounge band” is the quip that Skye Edwards recalled from an early review. The music press loves to characterise bands, but in Morcheeba's case, it comes across somewhat dumbed down. Contained within Morcheeba's mellow sounds are multiple layers of influence that reveal hidden depths with every listen. The interview with the band for this launch episode for The Art of Longevity (Season 12!) manages to scratch just beneath the surface at least. That said, Morcheeba know their place in making music that can be the perfect backdrop, to quote Ross Godfrey:“We've always made relaxing music. You can get home from work on a Friday night, have a glass of wine or smoke a spliff or whatever and play our music”. On the other hand, the sheer depth of their musical influences and references can be breathtaking. Within the mix are Bacharach, Barry and Moriconi of course, but also Brazilian late 60s Tropicalia, and somewhat less obviously (but most certainly in terms of always impressive guitar work) classic rock from Ross Godfrey's childhood favourites Neil Young and Jimi Hendrix. Meanwhile, Skye's lyrics and styles include 70s country music, along with ska and dub reggae. All of this is somehow weaved into the seamless Morcheeba sound on the new outstanding album Escape The Chaos. Launched in the mid-90s and quickly swept along on the British ‘trip-hop' wave, Morcheeba outlasted most of their contemporaries including Portishead (who refused to heed to the repeated calls to re-form). Morcheeba is one of those bands you might easily have forgotten about. And yet the band has (give or take a short hiatus and shuffling of personnel sometime between 2003 and 2009) steadily worked their way to 11 albums over 30 years, most of it under the radar of music industry gatekeepers and without much love from the music press. “They hated us” was Skye Edward's response when I brought up the subject of early press reviews. And yet, Pitchfork gave their debut album Who Can You Trust (1996) an 8.3/10, but then stopped loving them as the band's popularity took off. Recent single We Live & Die references “in the old days of NME” which had me going on to Wayback Machine to dig out an NME review from 1998 of the breakthrough album Big Calm. It was the now legendary music critic Syvia Patterson, who wrote:“Morcheeba you see, sounds nothing like Portishead. They sound like they like life”.That has certainly proved a lasting observation. And Morcheeba has proved a lasting British trip hop institution. One of the few 90s bands that just seem to keep on getting better and better. This live episode launches a new partnership between The Art of Longevity and Bang & Olufsen. He gained international recognition in 2001 for his soundtrack to Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (Amélie), following the success of his 1998 album Le Phare, which achieved gold status in France.Since then, Tiersen has released numerous studio albums and has performed extensively across Europe, North America and Asia. His discography includes collaborations with artists such as Jane Birkin, Elizabeth Fraser and Matt Elliott. His work has been featured in films, theatre productions and contemporary art installations.Tiersen's compositions have appeared in a range of films beyond Amélie, including Good Bye, Lenin! (2003), Alice et Martin (1998) and Tabarly (2008), as well as various short films and documentaries. His music is frequently used for its emotive and atmospheric qualities, particularly in European cinema. His latest release, Rathlin from a Distance | The Liquid Hour (2024), is a double album where the first part comprises eight solo piano pieces written during a 2023 sailing trip, each linked to a specific location. The second part shifts to electronic production, incorporating modular synths, samples and rhythmic textures, created following a night at sea near Belfast. The project reflects Tiersen's ongoing interest in location-based composition and the integration of acoustic and electronic elements.Tiersen records at his studio on the island of Ushant, off the coast of Brittany and continues to tour internationally.https://www.yanntiersen.com/https://www.instagram.com/yanntiersenhttps://www.facebook.com/yanntiersen.officialhttps://www.youtube.com/yanntiersenWilliam Stokes BiogWilliam Stokes is a producer, writer and artist in three-piece avant-psych band Voka Gentle. As well as being a critic and columnist for Sound On Sound, conceiving the popular Talkback column and heading up the Modular column, he has also written on music and music technology for The Guardian, MOJO, The Financial Times, Electronic Sound and more. As an artist in Voka Gentle he has made records with producers from Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Grizzly Bear, Nick Cave) to Sam Petts-Davies (Radiohead, The Smile, Roger Waters), has had songs featured on franchises from FIFA Football to The Sims and has toured across the UK, Europe and the USA, playing festivals from Pitchfork Avant-Garde in Paris to SXSW in Austin, Texas. He has collaborated with artists including the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, Morcheeba, Panda Bear and Sonic Boom. Alongside being a guitarist and pianist, he is a synthesis enthusiast with a particular interest in sampling and explorative sound manipulation. As a producer and engineer, he has made albums with acclaimed avant-garde musicians from composer Tullis Rennie to Mute Records artist Louis Carnell. “I'm always seeking out the most ‘out-there', experimental, risk-taking musicians I can find to work with,” he says, “to capture vibrant, detailed recordings and create three-dimensional mixes of music that might otherwise struggle to know where to begin in the studio environment.” Stokes currently lectures in Music Production at City, University of London.https://www.vokagentle.com/Catch more shows on our other podcast channels: https://www.soundonsound.com/sos-podcasts

Have you ever stopped to think, really think, about which colours suit you best when buying your clothes, eyewear and accessories? We all have colours we love, but are these colours truly bringing out the best in us? What messages are we giving out when we choose to wear certain colours? Can wearing different colours make us come across, for example, as more credible, or more successful, or more confident, or more empathic, or more sensitive?Manina Weldon and Rachel Saunders run Red Leopard, and they believe passionately in the important of choosing and wearing the right colours. It goes without saying that Jason Kirk is just as passionate about colours, taking risks, being bold. And all this makes for a fascinating episode of The Eyes Have It, as Jason, Manina and Rachel look in depth and how we can all use colours to our advantage.Check out our other podcasts including, Jason Bell, Kwame Alexander, Morcheeba, Kirsten Vangsness, Alexandra Wood and The McCarricks. Ross Harper on The DJ Sessions On Location Sessions at ADE 2023 10/19/23 About Ross Harper - “Really, my artiste, you amaze me. The lengths you will go to in order to accomplish your own destruction” - An excerpt from Neuromancer by William Gibson I have had an unswerving devotion to electronic music ever since my heady baptism in the 90s London rave scene which culminated in an intense 5 years of studying music production. Since then I have spent a lifetime delving deeper and deeper into production. My music has been compared to Jon Hopkins, Robert Miles and Orbital. Although these similarities are discernable, I am simply an artist determined to do my own thing. My major early influences as Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Portishead, Morcheeba and then everything 90s rave. I grew up in a single parent family and my mum has been my greatest role model, she was a Children's Party Entertainer for most of her adult life. My first name Ross means “headland”, the piece of land that sticks out into the sea and helps create somewhere wild, as well as the bay where people can enjoy the sea. My family name, Harper, comes from ancient times, Harper's are traditionally musicians who play music at festivals and for the royal gentry. My ambition is to live up to both these names I have been given. Every DJ set I share is a blank slate waiting to be written, I play anything from techno, drum & bass, deep house, dark disco, progressive house, cool ambient and everything in between. My personal productions are rich, varied and never to a script. The Ambient Girl series explores downtempo and has seen support from Cici, Lemonella and Ben Malone on Kiss FM. In Your Eyes e-zine dubbed it as “strong candidate for electronic album of the year”. Whereas my beat driven works have been supported by industry legends like Charlotte de Witte, Enrico Sangiuliano, John Dignweed, Kölsch, Laurent Garner, Martin L Gore of Depeche Mode, Sasha, and Nemone on BBC Radio 6. I am also the founding father of City Wall Records, where my A&R skills have signed tracks played in numerous Boiler Room sets including SNTS at Kompass and Ancient Methods in Berlin. I hold a weekly residency on www.aajamusic.com every Friday from 1000hrs GMT. I also present a monthly two hour show on AAJA on the fourth Monday of every month at 1800hrs where I share a plethora of cutting edge new underground releases.
