On today's show we chat with Svrcina!Singer/songwriter SVRCINA mixes earnest balladry and adventurous electro-pop in the spirit of Sia and Ellie Goulding. Following her initial EPs, she garnered wider attention with her 2020 full-length, Elysian Fields. Born Molly Svrcina in 1996 in Detroit, Michigan, SVRCINA ("sur-cee-nah") sang in church growing up, and became passionate about music around the age of eight. Starting her career as Molly Hunt before adopting her family name, she moved to Nashville, got a manager, and a series of subsequent writing partnerships led to her signing her first publishing deal in 2009 at the age of 13. She released a handful of acoustic-minded pop ballads as Molly Hunt over the next few years before dropping the moniker in 2013. During that year, she released SVRCINA videos including a cover version of Imagine Dragons' "Bleeding Out" and her original Christmas song "The Difference." In 2014, she was featured on the Built by Titan dance track "The Darkness," and her debut EP Lover. Fighter. arrived in early 2016. An eponymous EP appeared in early 2018, followed a year later by the Hearing Colour EP. She also garnered attention behind the scenes, co-penning MOTi and Icona Pop's "Sink Deeper," and Sj and Joakim Molitor's "Live Without You," both in 2019. There were also collaborations with Robin Schultz, Lecrae, Hulvey, and Tommee Profit. With her most recent album release, 1200 Beats Per Minute, SVRCINA, again, showcases breathtaking vocals and mature lyricism while evoking the emotions of all who listen. @svrcinasongssvrcina.comchristianmusicguys.com@christianmusicguys.com

To true fans, baseball is so much more than a sport. Some call it the perfect game. Some see it as a field of dreams. A portal to another dimension. Some see it as a road to God. Others—”heathen” we might call them—find the game unutterably boring. Too confusing, too long, too nit-picky about rules. In this episode, Yankee fan John Sexton (President Emeritus of New York University and Benjamin F. Butler Professor of Law) joins Red Sox fan Evan Rosa to discuss the philosophical and spiritual aspects of baseball. John is the author of the 2013 bestselling book Baseball as a Road to God, which is based on a course he has taught at NYU for over twenty years.Image Credit: “The American National Game of Base Ball: Grand Match for the Championship at the Elysian Fields, Hoboken, N. A legal scholar by training, he served as president of New York University from 2001 through 2015. He is now NYU's Benjamin F. Butler Professor of Law and dean emeritus of the Law School, having served as dean from 1988 through 2002.He is author of Standing for Reason: The University in a Dogmatic Age (Yale University Press, 2019) and Baseball as a Road to God: Seeing Beyond the Game (Gotham Books, 2013) (with Thomas Oliphant and Peter J. Schwartz), among other books in legal studies.A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a recipient of 24 honorary degrees, President Emeritus Sexton is past chair of the American Council on Education, the Independent Colleges of NY, the New York Academy of Science, and the Federal Reserve Board of NY.In 2016, Commonweal Magazine honored Sexton as the Catholic in the Public Square. The previous year, the Arab-American League awarded him its Khalil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Award; and the Open University of Israel gave him it's Alon Prize for “inspired leadership in the field of education.” In 2013, Citizens Union designated him as “an outstanding leader who enhances the value of New York City.”He received a BA in history and a PhD in the history of American religion from Fordham University, and a JD magna cum laude from Harvard Law School. Heavenly realms and infernal pits, Valhallas and Elysian Fields, gardens of eternal bliss - these visions of the afterlife have shaped human behavior for millennia. But what if they're more than comforting myths or cultural metaphors? Could these intricate promises of posthumous rewards be cosmic fishing lures, cast into the sea of human consciousness by entities beyond our ken? As we probe the boundaries of reality and consciousness, we must confront a chilling possibility: our deepest spiritual yearnings might be expertly crafted bait, designed to hook not just our souls, but the very energy of our emotions and beliefs...LIVE ON Digital Radio! http://bit.ly/3m2Wxom or http://bit.ly/40KBtlWhttp://www.troubledminds.org Support The Show!https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/troubled-minds-radio--4953916/supporthttps://ko-fi.com/troubledmindshttps://rokfin.com/creator/troubledmindshttps://patreon.com/troubledmindshttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/troubledmindshttps://troubledfans.comFriends of Troubled Minds! - https://troubledminds.org/friendsShow Schedule Sun-Mon-Tues-Wed-Thurs 7-10pstiTunes - https://apple.co/2zZ4hx6Spotify - https://spoti.fi/2UgyzqMTuneIn - https://bit.ly/2FZOErSTwitter - https://bit.ly/2CYB71U----------------------------------------https://troubledminds.org/cosmic-propaganda-the-invisible-pantheon/https://www.haaretz.com/2004-04-15/ty-article/egyptian-censors-allow-matrix-third-sequel-but-with-omissions/0000017f-e669-dc7e-adff-f6edb9330000https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Matrix_(franchise)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_banned_filmshttps://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2019/4/10/18275618/simulation-hypothesis-matrix-rizwan-virkhttps://www.scientificamerican.com/article/do-we-live-in-a-simulation-chances-are-about-50-50/http://www.lucidology.com/blog/101/obe-vibrations/https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/articles/201409/seeing-the-lighthttps://psi-encyclopedia.spr.ac.uk/articles/out-body-experience-obehttps://www.ancient-origins.net/human-origins-religions/ancient-egyptian-soul-0012390https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/ancient-soul/https://greekreporter.com/2023/12/01/human-soul-explained-ancient-greek-philosopher-socrates/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Dweller_on_Two_Planets

Join us as we delve into the mystical world of Theo Polymorphos, a Florida-based queer artist whose upcoming solo exhibition "Elysian Curves and Parallels" paints a vivid tableau of myth interwoven with modern life. Presented by Dama Gallery on Artsy.net and highlighted in The Bureau of Queer Art's Volume 4, Pink Tide, Theo's work transports viewers into a realm where ancient gods and modern narratives collide from May 8th to August 8th, 2024. In this podcast episode, Theo shares his unique artistic journey, drawing from the wellsprings of nature, classical mythology, and personal introspection. “Mythology breathes through the canvas of my dreams, offering visions that shape my art,” Theo reveals, emphasizing how these age-old tales gain new life through his brush. His artworks aren't just retellings but reimaginings that blend the essence of traditional myths with the poignant realities of queer existence. Listeners will gain insight into Theo's creative process, which begins with a spark—an image or a snippet of poetry—and evolves through a blend of digital and traditional media into intricate narratives that challenge our perceptions of identity and transformation. Exploring themes from Dionysian rituals to the philosophies of Nietzsche, Theo's work invites us to reconsider the narratives we inherit and the ones we pass on. Tune into The Bureau of Queer Art's podcast to hear Theo Polymorphos articulate how his art not only depicts myths but actively participates in their ongoing story, weaving the threads of the past with the vibrant, shifting tapestry of queer lives today. Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) tells the story of Hushpuppy, a young girl living with her daddy in the Louisiana bayou, adapting to a changing world: her father is dying, the climate is warming, and prehistoric beasts are returning from the ice to haunt her. Aurochs, the titular beasts, were real Pleistocene animals – although the movie takes some artistic liberties. It's a wonderful movie with many layers, but the only one we're really qualified to dissect is the evolution of cows. Win some SotSA Merch! Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 12, 2024 is: Elysian ih-LIZH-un adjective Something described as elysian is blissful or delightful in a way that evokes something otherworldly. Elysian is also used to mean "of or relating to Elysium"—that is, an eternal paradise for the souls of the heroic and pure in classical mythology. // They were motivated by the dream of retiring to a tropical isle and enjoying a life of elysian ease. See the entry > Examples: "The secret to its longevity, then and now, is a steadfast commitment to the idea of dolce far niente, the elysian pleasantness of doing absolutely nothing except enjoying yourself." — Spencer Bailey, Town & Country, 28 Mar. 2021 Did you know? In classical mythology, Elysium, also known as the Elysian Fields, was the paradise reserved for the heroes immortalized by the gods. Ancient Greek poets imagined it as the abode of the blessed after death, but in English the concept has more often been applied figuratively. In his history play Henry V, William Shakespeare used the place-name as a word for a peaceful state of sleep enjoyed by a mere mortal, and 18th-century English lexicographer and author Samuel Johnson wrote in The Rambler that in reading pastoral poetry we allow ourselves "to be transported to elysian regions, where we are met with nothing but joy, and plenty, and contentment..." In Walden a century later Henry David Thoreau wrote that "The summer, in some climates, makes possible to man a sort of Elysian life."
In this episode of MFM Speaks Out, Dawoud Kringle comes out of retirement to present a 2023 retrospective. We will share some of the content we brought to you in 2023, and enjoy a few other surprises as well. Our guest for the January episode was Haana. Haana is a violinist, vocalist, electronic music artist, visual performer, and entirely self-contained as a one-woman orchestra. She played with Kanye West, and Alvin Ailey, as well as festivals such as Joshua Tree Festival and Coachella and others in the US, Canada, UAE, and Australia, Barack Obama's inaugural ball, and at Michael Jordan's wedding. Haana has endorsement deals with Ableton, Native Instruments, Even Headphones (manufactured by Blue Microphones), and Realist Violins. She appeared in ads for Intel, Harvey Nichols, Nike, Ferrari, and Apple Computers. In addition, she has experience as a film composer and does artist mentorship/marketing, branding, and production consultation. In February, MFM board member and co-producer of this very podcast Adam Reifsteck joined us for a very fascinating discussion. Adam is a New York-based composer, electronic music artist, producer, entrepreneur, and music activist. He writes for small ensembles, produces electronic music, and performs improvised group compositions on Wi-Fi-connected laptops. He has collaborated with string quartets, university choirs, and visual and electronic artists. His approach to composition includes elements of improvisation. He is a member of Broadcast Music Inc., the Society of Composers and Lyricists, the Recording Academy, the Audio Engineering Society, and Musicians for Musicians. Our March episode was a landmark. We interviewed Keyna Wilkins, the first MFM member from Australia. Wilkins holds a Master of Music Composition at Sydney Conservatorium, studied composition, classical and jazz piano, and classical flute with several prestigious instructors, and intuitive conceptual improvisation with Tibetan Buddhist musician Tenzin Cheogyal. holds an MA in Flute Performance at Bristol University (UK) in 2008. She is known as a soloist and leader of cutting-edge ensembles and has written over 60 compositions, including 4 major orchestral works. Her works have been commissioned and/or performed by ensembles such as The Metropolitan Orchestra, Syzygy Ensemble, Elysian Fields, The Sydney Bach Society, and many others. She has released 9 albums of original music on all streaming platforms including 4 solo albums. Wilkins is also an Associate Artist with the Australian Music Centre and has five tunes in the Australian Jazz Realbook. She also writes music for films and theatre including the short film "Remote Access" which won Best Short Film at the Imagine This International Film Festival in New York in 2019 and her works are featured on ABC, Triple J, Fine Music FM, Cambridge Radio, SOAS London and many more. Her music is published by Wirripeng and she is a member of Musicians for Musicians. MFM member Sylvian Leroux was our guest in April. Sylvian is a flutist, saxophonist, guitarist, composer, arranger, bandleader, educator, inventor, and prominent member of Musicians for Musicians. Sylvain Leroux grew up in Montreal where he studied classical flute at Vincent d'Indy; and improvisation and composition in New York at the Creative Music Studio where he attended classes by luminaries Don Cherry, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Karl Berger, Cecil Taylor, and many others. A pioneer of African/Jazz collaborations, Sylvain is a foremost player of the Fula flute, the traditional flute from Guinea. He was selected as “Rising Flute Star” by the Downbeat Magazine Critics' Poll for many years, achieving the #2 spot in 2019. As a bandleader, he brought traditional West African music to Zankel Hall with his Fula Flute Ensemble and held the fort for more than a decade at New York City's Zinc Bar with his African Jazz group “Source”. His 2002 CD “Fula Flute" achieved cult status, and stimulated a worldwide interest in the instrument. His 2012 album “Quatuor Creole” was hailed as “a perfect contemporary music release.” He curated New York's “Griot Summits” which featured performances by 25 West African griots from five countries. He has performed and recorded with Emeline Michel, Adam Rudolph, Karl Berger, Hassan Hakmoun, Billy Martin, and many West African stars. As a maker and seller of Fula flutes around the world, he invented and patented the Qromatica, a Fula flute capable of chromatic functionality. This led him to initiate "L'ecole Fula Flute", a music literacy project that graduated many excellent young flutists who are now re-energizing an endangered flute tradition. Our May 2023 episode featured Mark Chimples, a.k.a. Mark C. Mark is the guitarist and synthesizer player with Live Skull. Formed in 1982, Live Skull is considered by many aficionados to be the quintessential New York City noise band. Rising concurrently with bands such as Sonic Youth and Swans, Live Skull helped define the post-No Wave underground "noise rock" in the 1980s music scene in New York City. Over the following decades, Live Skull released five albums and three EPs with a rotating cast of 11 members, all of whom added new ideas to the group's evolving sound. Themes of struggle and chaos permeated and inspired their music. Their constant progression inspired New York Times critic Robert Palmer to call them “as challenging, as spiritually corrosive, and ultimately as transcendent as Albert Ayler's mid-'60s free-jazz or the implacable drone-dance of the early Velvet Underground. It's one of the essential sounds of our time." And in doing so, he has to renegotiate his position toward Virgil's great poem, THE AENEID.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we look at the steps up to the ridge that overlooks what will become the beautiful valley of the kings. Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:13] My English translation of this passage: PURGATORIO, Canto VII, lines 64 - 81. If you'd like to read along, print it off, or drop a comment, please go to my website, markscarbrough.com.[03:37] With minimal effort, Sordello, Virgil, and Dante the pilgrim come to what seems to be the Elysian Fields of THE AENEID's afterlife.[07:23] Dante's poetry may not yet be astute enough to handle beauty, rather than terror.[13:05] If this spot in PURGATORIO is indeed an allusion to the Elysian Fields, then what of Limbo back in INFERNO?[18:42] Rereading all of PURGATORIO, Canto VII, through this moment: lines 1 - 81.

If you'd like to read along, print it off, or continue the conversation, please go to my website, markscarbrough.com.[04:33] The passage seems to call back to Belacqua in PURGATORIO, Canto IV, and to show us that PURGATORIO is starting to wrap into itself.[08:07] Sordello "uses" a passage from THE AENEID to explain their movement on Mount Purgatory.[12:53] Sordello is only talking to Virgil, despite Dante standing right there.[15:35] Virgil asks questions about ability and the will--and the allegory gets very intense.[18:41] Sordello makes a gesture similar to the one Jesus makes in John 8 when the woman is caught in adultery.[21:12] When there's no light, stay where you are--or else you might have to move down.[23:16] Delight is the central motivation of PURGATORIO and even COMEDY as a whole. Too bad knowing that does Virgil no good.[24:48] Delight directs the will.[26:40] Love may move the fence but that movement is always costly.

In this episode of Exploring Art Podcast, hosted by Eli, Jeremy and Isa join the discussion. They delve into a fascinating case study that explores eighteenth-century English gardens, which were vastly different from contemporary gardens. These gardens were designed to convey sophisticated messages, and their visitors often referred to them as "reading a garden." The focus of the case study is William Kent's renowned garden at Stowe in Buckinghamshire, England, particularly the Elysian Fields section. The garden features a complex architectural ensemble consisting of three temples: the Temple of Ancient Virtue, the Temple of Modern Virtue, and the Temple of British Worthies. The hosts discuss the symbolic significance of these temples, the deliberate architectural contrasts, and the inscriptions that add further layers of meaning. They also raise thought-provoking questions about the interpretation of gardens as a form of artistic expression and the limits to the messages a garden or a landscape can convey. Throughout the episode, they encourage listeners to engage with the subject matter, explore additional sources, and share their insights on social media. The episode concludes with a reminder to subscribe to the Exploring Art Podcast and a call to stay curious.
The artistry of gardens and activist art are often thought of as polar forms of expression in comparison. During the Stuart Period, a time of great religious and political revolution, landscape architecture began to adopt revolutionist tendencies. One of the greatest examples of this is through the work of William Kent's Elysian Garden. Elysian Fields are thought to be the final resting place of heroic and virtuous souls in Greek Mythology. During the extreme embrace of Catholicism during the Stuart Period, these gardens pushed boundaries to make a statement for societal change. Discussed in this podcast, we explore how these gardens and gardens alike pushed boundaries in their interpretation of enjoyers, how interpreting these forms of art can be compared to “reading”, and explore the limitations of these bodies of work. In this episode of Exploring Art Podcast, we discuss the wonders and artistic aspects of the Elysian Fields at Stowe. Join us as we analyze its aesthetics, meanings, and historical temples in depth. With today's panel, we explore and review how a seemingly shallow area of landscape is, in reality, a purposeful poem with many fascinating interpretations.
I beg your garden consists of the upcoming of landscape gardens. We start in the 1700s and move quickly into the 18th century before arriving at contemporary gardens. At Stowe in Buckinghamshire, William Kent and his alluring designs were the focus of our attention. His influence at Elysian Fields and several temples, which are explained and shown in this episode, also affected many genres as well as the fields of art, gardening, and architecture. Gardens from antiquity reflect society. They are an interpretation of its past and of the numerous cultures that have inhabited it; they serve as a historical record of past interactions between individuals and their surroundings. In the 19th Century, the Elysian Fields in New Jersey, lay just a short boat trip away for New Yorkers looking to spread their legs, take in some rural, countryside air or relax on the lawn of a riverside refreshment house with a glass of lemonade. Mostly famous for being the birthplace of modern baseball, the fields have another, somewhat less well-known story connected to their dense thickets and green walkways. Far from the straightforward drubbing of that first game of baseball, this story is, of course far darker, full of more twists and turns and has no winners. Hailed as one of the greatest criminal mysteries of 19th Century New York, the case of Mary Rogers is at once perfectly well solved and at the same time, completely wide open.
