In today's Episode we are talking all about ENGAGEMENT! How to engage in the DMs, how to create connection, how to sell. Engagement ain't rocket science - it's actually common sense. A perfect reminder that YOU can do ANYTHING with a little courage and tenacity. Go get it sis!! With a deep passion for empowering women to build their dream lives and businesses in an authentic, fearless way, RHG is willing to break the mold and the rules to do what they do best. At 18, Emma was diagnosed with Bipolar II Disorder, with little hope or idea of what her future would look like. Here's my third and final interview with one of the folks from Random House Graphic. This time I reconnect with RHG's Senior Editor Whitney Leopard. I spoke with Whitney for the first time about a year ago, and you can still find that interview in the show's catalog. This time we talk about the changes RHG has gone through since its launch during the pandemic, how that has changed her approach to picking up new titles, maintaining a creator's vision, and we talk a bit about all the new RHG titles coming out.
For July's Portrait of an Editors, I'm shining the POE spotlight on some of the folks at Random House Graphic. This is the second of three interviews, and for this one, I had a chance to talk with the company's Publishing Director, Gina Gagliano. She covers everything from her start in publishing at First Second Books to creating and running the day-to-day of RHG and other things like designing covers and being part of a big publishing house.
For the next three episodes of Portrait of an Editor, I'm interviewing the folks at Random House Graphic. Typically, I work my way through a publisher's editing team haphazardly, but this time I get to train what's left of my focus on back-to-back interviews of the folks at RHG. Up first is Patrick Crotty, who is RHG's Senior Designer. We run through his approach to designing covers, working with editors and creators, and the Swedish comics scene.
Many of us have interesting paths that that we have followed in our entrepreneurial lives and our guest, Chris Deulen is no exception. Listen in as he and ITF Host Kevin Hargis talk about his early days as a window cleaner, his collaborations with Shawn Gavin of RHG & Tucker, and how he transitioned his rock climbing skills into high rise window cleaning. He also gives great advice on how he managed to weather the COVID storm, and his philosophies on keeping his head together during the stressful times. Flow on!
In this week's episode of Off Panel, Random House Graphic Publishing Director Gina Gagliano joins the show to talk about the upcoming children and teenaged graphic novel readers imprint she's building. Gagliano discusses her comic book origin stories, how she got into marketing, the beginnings of First Second, the elongated release window of the book market, her podcast, Graphic Novel TK, how Random House Graphic first came together, where you start when you are opening an imprint, her curation strategy, her very positive Twitter feed, Lucy Knisley at RHG, whether other Random House releases impact her approach, the biggest surprise of launching Random House Graphic, and more, before we close with a new segment, as Skybound's Sr. Vice President of Business Development, Shawn Kirkham, joins the show to highlight our Beasts of the Week in the world of comics.

China's High-Tech Surge - Investing in America and Innovation
In April 2014, Asia Society and the Rhodium Group launched a report on Chinese high technology investment in the United States. The study surveys the state of play and is intended to provide common ground for the ongoing debate, often ideological and acrimonious, over U.S-China high tech trade and investment in sectors such as information technology, life sciences, and clean technology. Key topics include drivers of Chinese high-tech investment, current trends, and risks and opportunities for the U.S. posed by the investment boom. The report also offers a series of recommendations to policymakers and business leaders in both the U.S. and China. Drawing from the Rhodium Group's proprietary database of Chinese investment in the U.S., the report's scope is national, but given the industry's distribution, it is the most relevant to audiences in California, New York, and other high-tech clusters in the U.S. The report is co-authored by Daniel H. Rosen and Thilo Hanemann of the Rhodium Group. As Chinese outbound investment shifts from natural resources into more advanced, innovation-intensive industries, a rapidly increasing share is going into U.S. IT, cleantech, biotech, advanced transportation, and more. What are the hottest sectors drawing the most Chinese investment? Which Chinese firms are leading the surge and what is driving them? What are the economic and political factors behind these investments, and what are the most serious challenges they face? What is the impact on U.S. jobs, the tax base, and national security? Thilo Hanemann Research Director, Rhodium Group Thilo Hanemann is research director at RHG and leads the firm's cross-border investment work. He coordinates RHG's research across different practice areas and supports the investment management, strategic planning and policy analysis requirements of RHG clients within his fields of expertise. Hanemann's research on cross-border investment assesses new trends in global capital flows, related policy developments and the political and commercial dynamics of specific transactions. One of his areas of expertise is the rise of emerging economies as global investors and the implications for host economies and the global economy. His most recent work focuses on the evolution of China's international investment position and the economic and policy implications from this new trend.

As many have expressed disappointment with the main output, what were the strengths and weaknesses of the process leading to the Copenhagen Accord? Also, what is the likelihood for international action on climate change following this latest round of negotiations? Trevor Houser has served as Senior Advisor to US Special Envoy for Climate Change Todd Stern through the climate change negotiations in the Danish capital last December. Now a partner at RHG, a New York-based economic research firm, and visiting fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, DC, Houser will discuss the outcome of the Copenhagen summit and the prospect for international cooperation on climate change in the years ahead.
