In 2001, Kathleen (Keen) Harrison, PhD, took a leave from her university faculty position in medical genetics to travel with the Semester at Sea program. A visit to Kenya's first orphanage for HIV-positive children changed the course of her life. She returned home feeling, “I just can't walk away from this.” She didn't.In 2005, Keen founded Project Harambee, a volunteer-run nonprofit supporting community-led initiatives across three pillars: health care, economic opportunity, and education. Its programs are both practical and powerful: Plant a Seed–Grow a Doc helps students from high schools in under-resourced communities to attend medical school and return to serve rural communities. Livestock donations—dairy goats, chickens, and pigs—help families reduce hunger and generate income.Women's cooperatives create crafts sold in the United States, building sustainable livelihoods.Today, Keen remains deeply committed while gradually transitioning leadership to nonprofit partners in Kenya and dedicated U.S. volunteers. Sustained by a wide circle of generosity, Project Harambee continues to grow—transforming lives across communities and generations."I left a profession in medical genetics and found a vocation supporting women and families in Kenya." - Kathleen HarrisonConnect with Keen:Email: keen.harrison.mcnulty@gmail.comWebsite: www.projectharambee.orgFacebook: harambee.nfpAfrica photo bookACKNOWLEDGEMENTSOUR SPONSOR AARP Illinois is dedicated to empowering adults 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. Matt Faircloth interviews Kevin Robinson as they break down actionable tactics like analyzing zip codes with a focus on local amenities and community trends, building relationships on the ground, and employing strategic financing options like the Homestead Loan methods that allow him to grow his portfolio without expensive bridge loans or hard money. You'll also learn why he avoids traditional LLC strategies in favor of a simple, practical approach perfect for most investors who are just starting out or owning a handful of properties. Why does this matter? Because most investors are playing a high-stakes game with little understanding of market fluctuations or risk, often chasing short-term home runs at the expense of consistent, long-term wealth. Kevin shows that disciplined, incremental growth hitting singles and doubles, not home runs leads to sustainable wealth and community transformation. His philosophy emphasizes that real estate is a tool to lift people and neighborhoods today, not decades from now. Have you ever felt like you're doing meaningful work… yet something inside you knows you're not fully aligned with what you're truly meant to do? Do you sense you have a message, a lesson, or a lived experience that could help others—but you're unsure how to shape it, communicate it, or even recognize its value? What if the story you're already living is the key to your next level of clarity, influence, and impact? In this episode, we sit down with Bill Blankschaen, founder and Chief Story Architect of StoryBuilders—a company devoted to telling stories that make the world a better place by helping leaders turn their ideas into compelling books and learning experiences that multiply their impact, influence, and income.Bill's journey—from Christian school founder and pastor, to stepping into the unknown with six kids and no guaranteed income, to becoming a trusted guide for bestselling authors, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders—reveals the power of knowing your story and telling it well. Through candid reflections on calling, clarity, identity, faith, family leadership, and the “normalcy trap,” Bill shows why most people underestimate the value of their lived experiences—and how storytelling can unlock purpose at home, at work, and in your mission.Whether you're an entrepreneur, parent, mentor, or creator, this episode will help you think differently about who you are, what you've lived, and how your story can change others' lives.Quotes:“Clarity just eliminates friction and draws people to you that you want to be drawn to you. You have to have that clarity before you can expand that influence.”“Your story is about you, but your story isn't for you. You are there to serve someone—your story is there to serve a purpose.”“The battle belongs to God, not to you. Sometimes you need to let go and let Him fight it.”Actionable TakeawaysBreak the “normalcy trap” by naming the value in your own story.Write down three life experiences you've dismissed as “normal,” and ask: How could this help someone who's 5–10 years behind me? This exercise reveals hidden insights you've been overlooking.Clarify your identity before your message.Using Bill's principle that clarity precedes influence, take 10 minutes to answer: Who am I really called to be? Who is my story for—and who is it not for? Identity drives communication, leadership, and purpose.Define the story your family or team is living in right now.Ask yourself: What story am I unconsciously telling at home or at work? Is it an intentional narrative or an accidental one? Pick one tradition, phrase, or practice to reinforce the culture you want to build.Turn one life lesson into a teachable framework.Choose a challenge you've overcome, then outline the three steps someone else could follow. This becomes the foundation for a book chapter, workshop, keynote, or coaching process.Practice surrender by identifying what you're gripping too tightly.Bill shared how breakthrough came when he released control and allowed God to lead. Reflect on one area—business, family, or personal identity—where you need to loosen your grip and allow clarity, peace, or guidance to emerge.ConclusionThis conversation is a powerful reminder that your story is one of your greatest assets—personally, professionally, and spiritually. When you gain clarity about who you are and what your experiences mean, you unlock influence, purpose, and direction.Bill challenges us to stop overlooking the value in our own lives and start telling our stories with intention. Your experiences aren't accidental—they're assignments. And when you share them with clarity and courage, you create impact far beyond yourself.Breakthrough begins when you decide to own your story.

People who live on the streets, homeless and alone, need one thing first and foremost: LOVE. Pastor Rodrigo Santos, a missionary in South Africa with Grace of God International Church, shares how the homeless and suffering desperately need compassion from other believers. He grew up serving others in Brazil and then was inspired to help show God's love to the homeless population in Rio, after seeing so many people struggling to survive on the streets. Most people, he says, are not homeless because they want to be, but because of some terrible life circumstance that put them there. As fellow believers, we must come to their aid. And while donations of food and clothing are always appreciated, the most important thing we can do is teach them the Gospel. “Once their mindset changes, everything changes,” Rodrigo says.TAKEAWAYSHomeless people are humans just like us - they have real feelings and real dreams and any one of us can find ourselves homelessIt's not just about giving food, it's about changing the heartSee the needs of the people in the community around you and address them as you canThe church is most effective in addressing the homeless issue when believers come together to figure out a solution

In this episode of Men of Influence, host Tim Holloway welcomes Carl Hultgren, a fitness coach with over 26 years of experience, who transitioned from a troubled youth of drugs and alcohol to a life-changing career in personal training. Based in Texas with two gyms and affiliates in California, Carl's passion for preventative fitness stems from his own recovery, having been sober since age 16. After surviving challenges like the 2008 housing crash, he now helps clients transform their lives through fitness, nutrition, and mindset coaching. Carl ties physical fitness to influence, noting that a disciplined, fit physique exudes confidence and respect, signaling a willingness to sacrifice comfort for success, which inspires others.Carl emphasizes discipline over motivation, advocating for foundational habits like lifting weights three times a week, getting 10,000 steps daily, and eating single-ingredient foods like chicken or steak to avoid processed junk. His daily routine—prayer, gym at 4:30 AM, 250 grams of protein, and reading—drives his excellence, rooted in his faith, which was reignited in 2015 after a personal crisis. Progressive overload, consistently increasing workout intensity, fuels exponential growth, while his faith guides him to honor his body as God's temple. Carl's message: don't quit, and do the work you'll stick with to live better.Key Takeaways:Discipline Signals Influence: A fit, disciplined body projects confidence and sacrifice, earning respect and inspiring others.Foundational Habits: Lift weights three times a week, get 10,000 steps daily, and eat single-ingredient foods to build a healthy body.Progressive Overload: Gradually increase workout intensity to adapt and grow stronger, avoiding plateaus.Faith and Fitness: Honor your body as God's temple through consistent exercise and clean eating, driven by purpose.Actionable Step: Lift weights three times this week, even light ones, to start building muscle and longevity.“Discipline trumps motivation every day. Do the work you'll never stop doing to be the man God intended.” - Carl Hultgren

In this episode of Men of Influence, host Tim Holloway welcomes Mark Tregilgas, known as "Tregs," a 45-year-old fitness coach from South Wales, UK, with nearly 18 years in the industry. As the owner of 30 Plus Men's Fitness, Tregs shares his journey from a nightlife event promoter to finding his calling as a personal trainer after a pivotal 10k run. Inspired by his active parents, he transitioned into fitness at 27, coaching men both online and in-person to optimize their health and energy. Tregs emphasizes that physical fitness enhances confidence, energy, and presence, enabling men to influence others positively by "vibrating differently" and embracing life's challenges without fear of judgment.Tregs outlines a foundational approach to health, starting with sleep, hydration, and daily steps before layering in nutrition (high-protein, calorie-deficit diets) and training. He stresses consistency over quick fixes, warning against reliance on trends like weight loss injections without addressing mindset and environment. Drawing from Atomic Habits by James Clear, Tregs advocates for identity change through small, consistent wins, proving to yourself daily who you want to become. His non-negotiable habits; nighttime tea for sleep, 2-3 liters of water, and 15,000 steps; drive his personal excellence, and he encourages men to start these simple practices immediately for lasting impact.Key Takeaways:Fitness Fuels Influence: A healthy body boosts energy and confidence, enhancing how you show up and influence others in all areas of life.Foundation First: Prioritize sleep, hydration, and daily steps as the base of a healthy lifestyle before adding nutrition and training.Consistency Over Quick Fixes: Sustainable change comes from boring, consistent habits, not short-term challenges or extreme diets.Identity Through Habits: Small daily wins shape your identity, proving to yourself you're disciplined and capable of change.Actionable Step: Start today by drinking 2-3 liters of water, aiming for 7,000-10,000 steps, and creating a nighttime routine for better sleep.“The magic is in the journey; who you become through consistent habits, not just the end result.” - Mark TregilgasLearn more about Tim through the following links:FacebookPodcasting group
Once an ESPN anchor and now the founder of Alcohol-Free Lifestyle, James Swanwick's journey is one of self-discovery, transformation, and the power of choosing kindness for yourself. After giving up alcohol in 2010, James experienced dramatic improvements in his sleep, health, and clarity—changes that inspired him to create Project 90, a program helping high achievers break free from alcohol and unlock their full potential. His story shows that one intentional shift can spark a ripple effect of resilience, purpose, and lasting well-being. Key Takeaways: Quitting alcohol creates a domino effect, improving sleep, health, relationships, and overall clarity. Choosing an alcohol-free lifestyle is one of the greatest acts of kindness you can give yourself. High achievers often perform at a higher level when they step away from alcohol. Alcohol disrupts sleep quality, leaving the body working instead of repairing overnight. Sustainable change comes from loving the alcohol-free lifestyle—not just “white-knuckling” sobriety.
