Riding Shotgun With Charlie #071 Daniel Easterday Sued Deerfield, IL with IRSA & SAF   I was headed to Chicago for some family events. I had one morning to squeeze in a possible RSWC interview.  I messaged Rhonda Ezell and asked if she knew anyone who would be around that morning. She set me up with Daniel Easterday. When he was older, he started to get into training. He learned that people aren’t as good they think they are with a firearm and he wanted to learn more.    After the Supreme Court decided that since Illinois was the last and only state to NOT allow it’s law abiding, background check passing citizens to be able to carry a concealed firearm outside their homes, they needed to change that. However, the anti-gun crowd gave towns time to make their own laws before the state laws took over.    Daniel and his family were living in Highland Park, which also did an ‘assault weapon ban’. He owned items that the town ‘didn’t like’ and had a friend store them so he complied with the laws, so he moved to Deerfield. Highland Park and Deerfield took their ordinance similar to the Cook County assault weapon ban. But Deerfield called it ‘safe storage’, but the state doesn’t have storage laws.    After Deerfield decided to change the laws and legal opinions, they amended the ordinance, it was the same as it was before. They used many of the same old cliches always used about weapons of war on our streets. With the help of the Illinois State Rifle Association and the Second Amendment Foundation, they were able to hold off the so-called-assault-weapon-ban in Deerfield.    We talk about some of the ridiculous laws and things that have to be done in the state of Illinois to get a firearm concealed carry permit. One is where the police can see who is applying for a permit, and can deny anyone the license. After 14 months of delays and the police chief of Highland Park abusing his power, Daneil finally got his carry permit.    Daniel shares that with Clarion Concepts, he is starting a “So You Think You Can Carry” course!  They emphasize that just because you have a gun, doesn’t mean it’s always the best tool. It sounds like a great course that pushes the limits of the comfort zone of the course attendees. Jon Dufresne and Scott Jedlinski are two up in coming instructors.  They are the new generations of firearms preachers who take what is known about shooting and format it to a more modern approach. Jon is a former Army Ranger who now teaches for Sage Dynamics and for Frank Proctor.  Jon not only was a guest of the podcast but was a Shooter’s Summit instructor.    Scott Jedlinski or “Jedi” teaches under his own company, Modern Samurai Project and is an avid Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and master class competitive shooter. Both teach classes with the red dot sight on pistols and that’s where I was with them.  On today’s podcast, I’m recording a different kind of interview.  I interview both Jon and Jedi after day one of the Modern Samurai Project’s Red Dot Pistol Course at the awesome Homestead Training Center in Homestead FL. So a couple of notes.  Yes, this is being recorded on a live range at the end of the day and “That Guy” showed up at the very end to shoot in the next bay.  He had to dump his ammo.  So that being said, there will be some gunshots in the background.  Also, I learned that the type of mic you use on a range is important and I had to use some noise reduction on Jon’s and Jedi’s tracks..so you don’t need to tell me your heard some hiss in the background.  You might not notice it. My guest this week is Aaron Cowan.  Aaron served in the Army and National Guard as an infantryman.  There he served as a rifleman and designated marksman in addition to learning small unit tactics and close quarter combat techniques.  After his service, Aaron became a private security contractor where he protected convoys, worked on personal protection details and also provided security during natural disasters. Aaron also advanced into the realm of law enforcement and swat officer on the federal level.  He quickly became a trainer for his department and is a member of the National Tactical Officers Association as well as a member of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors. Despite his tactical background, Aaron is also versed in the sciences and a voracious reader.  He credits his upbringing that taught him how to always be reading and writing which translates into Aaron being outspoken with his ideas.  Aaron is the lead instructor for Sage Dynamics, a training company he founded that teaches civilians and law enforcement weapons proficiency and tactics.  Aaron also writes a blog which became a Youtube channel where he post regularly. Aaron recently published a white paper on the use of Red Dot Sights on pistols which quickly spread across the internet.  To date, this document is one of the most thorough researched studies on red dot sights, which are the future of sighting for handguns. On this podcast we find out why putting a red dot sight on your handgun will greatly enhance your shooting abilities.  How using a 3 dimensional target can help your practice program.  And finally, by solving the “why” in your shooting will better prepare you for an actual gunfight.
