In this episode of TFB's Behind the Gun Podcast, we've brought on Richard Mo from Raven Wing Limited - a Los Angeles-based training company that offers firearms training ranging from basic pistol marksmanship up to more advanced carbine, pistol, and night vision training. In recent times, obtaining reliable firearms training has become a paradoxical endeavor, offering both convenience and challenges. While numerous reputable training companies exist, an equal number of unsafe or ineffective ones are preying on unsuspecting customers. Among the finest in the industry are Mo and his company, Raven Wing Limited, along with their network of well-known collaborators. They provide a diverse array of courses, ranging from fundamental firearms handling to advanced pistol and carbine training. Additionally, they offer personalized consultations and even night vision courses for those who have taken a liking to night-time range sessions. Operating from Los Angeles, California, one might expect Raven Wing to face fierce competition with hundreds of other well-known firearms trainers in the immediate area. However, they have adopted a unique approach by welcoming other trainers, including renowned figures like Scott Jedlinski from the Modern Samurai Project, Tim Herron Shooting, and JJ Racaza, previously featured on TFBTV. Today, we are joined by Mo to delve into the prevailing training trends in the firearms world. He will shed light on the preferred types of guns, optics, and holsters people are using for both competitive shooting and self-defense, as we progress nearly a quarter of the way through the 21st century. Please welcome Mo from Raven Wing Limited to the show! Raven Wing on Instagram Raven Wing on Facebook Raven Wing on YouTube Raven Wing Website - Sign up for Classes Here!

EvoSec Defensive Pistol and Combatives and Weapons Integration - 16 hr course 19-20 Nov 2022 in Tulsa Oklahoma. This gear and mindset episode Aaron gives an update on his shorty AR15, let's just say its a political but still its a badass AR. Aaron also mentioned an excellent video called Why everyone needs an AR15 by T.Rex Arms. This video gives a historical perspective on the origin of firearms in this nation and destroys the myth that "military" arms are somehow different than civilian arms. Also it refutes the lefts laughable rhetoric towards the AR15 in the hands of civilians as being weapons of war. Eric arrives to the show fresh out of the Modern Samurai Projects Red Dod Instructor class and gives some minor details of how awesome the class was. https://www.modernsamuraiproject.com/ Stay tuned for a in-depth After Action Review (AAR) with Scott Jedlinski in the next couple of weeks. The fourth and final part of our multi-part series covering The Complete Combatant and Modern Samurai Project's three-day training event, The Quest.
In Episode 28, Sofia interviews Chris Long, the Communications and Content Manager at Walther Arms USA concerning the Walther PDP F-Series. This version of the PDP firearm was made to fit the contour of a woman's hand and has many favorable features such as the reduced trigger reach, reduced grip circumference, and reduced slide force. These are only a few aspects that made the PDP-F an incredible option for women's concealed carry. Chris also discusses the ramifications of using a red-dot along with his experience as a Modern Samurai Project Instructor and Competitive Shooter. An episode we have been looking forward to creating for quite some time: the story behind why we exist. We talk about how Raven Wing was formed and why, touch on our purpose, where we want to go and the community of shooters in So Cal we hope to help cultivate. We touch on vetting instructors, and close it out with some exciting product releases and partnerships and a couple of shoutouts to some companies - Ghostmen Designs and Stand 1 Armory, we fully support because we run their products. Sipping on some Eagle Rare, we had a blast making this episode and hope you enjoy and get motivated to join us on the range.
AJ Zito is a gunsmith and practical shooter. He designs and makes custom 1911s and also competes in action shooting sports such as USPSA and IDPA. He is one of the few people I know that has actually gone to a three year gunsmithing school (something that sounds incredibly cool!) AJ currently is one of the assistant instructors with Scott “Jedi” Jedlinski from Modern Samurai Project and travels to many of the classes with him around the county. I had a really nice talk with AJ and look forward to hearing more from him as he starts up his podcast again. Links mentioned in the show: https://www.practicalperformance.org/
Another format departure as we feature another of the Raven Wing founders Ethan Fleitas, who coincidentally reveals one of the greatest nicknames during the episode. Ethan has a fascinating story of his journey into firearms which began in his childhood. Grab a drink of choice and buckle up. One of our longer episodes but well worth the listen as Ethan shares his story, his passion for teaching and how Raven Wing came into existence. He shares how he became the Mozart of zeroing IR devices on carbines, how and why he got so nice with the level III retention holsters and shares where you can see him on both TV and Movies as we talk about his acting career with a little sneak peak of what its like to be on set.
A quick format departure in this episode to feature one of the Raven Wing OG's Richard Mo. Born in raised in So. Cal, Mo has an interesting journey into firearms instruction and this episode will leave you just enough of that story to come back for more. Mo shares how Raven Wing Limited was formed, how the company has evolved and what some of our aspirations are in the next few years. We define "performance" shooting, the ever blurring line between tactical and competition and how important it is to lock in the fundamentals and the process so you can free up the bandwidth to problem solve. We do a quick debrief on our inaugural USPSA Bootcamp collaboration class with Fabio from My Own Defender ( www.myowndefender.com ) which we hosted this past weekend and talk a little about our continued to goal to service local Law Enforcement Professionals and keep bringing the best instructors behind enemy lines here in So. With Scott "Jedi" Jedlinski and AJ Zito back in town we had to sit down with another former guest, Fabio Spinella to chop it up. Hosted by Jedi, in this episode we discuss how we chase performance goals, challenges, and competitive classifications. Talk a little about what motivation and why you should shut your trap when watching someone chasing glory. A fantastic conversation with some amazing instructors and human beings this episode is a goldmine for considering how to think about measuring your performance, seeking adversity in your training and why its important to always seek the "why."Fabio, of My Own Defender, is the most recent F.A.S.T. We have Scott Jedlinski back for a 2nd show, going into a Red Dot deep dive, Scott's JiuJitsu journey, the crews current BJJ Fanatics video studies. Scott also hits on the fallacy that some instructors are pushing which is that you don't need to focus on performance in your firearms training yet more on things you cant measure like awareness, tactics and what not; he explains why this is a falsehood. Bio: Scott "Jedi" Jedlinski of the Modern Samurai Project is a life long martial artist in TKD, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and shooting. He is a Master class shooter in USPSA and is one of the industry leaders in the use of red dot optics (RDOs) on pistols. He is one of the most sought after instructors in this quickly evolving technology in firearms. This episode Aaron interviews Scott in a deep dive into the Red Dot Optics and their execution on pistols. Scott provides master class tips on how to run them effectively and provides a contrast between RDOs and iron sights putting to bed so many of the often sighted issues with the technology. Listen and get your learn on. Scott has taught members of the Pentagon ERT, US Marshal's Service, NYPD Instructor Cadre, Chicago SWAT, Ohio Tactical Officers Association, and FBI National Tactical Training Unit and multiple other SWAT teams around the US and much more. Is this a 2nd Amendment issue, a Special Land Usage Zoning, or a Noise Ordinance issue? 3) How helpful would it be to you and your neighbors if we had passed the Hearing Protection Act to make suppressors more practical to own? 4) If you could tell the neighbors ONE THING THAT MAY CHANGE THEIR MIND, what would it be? 5) What is your greatest NEED currently? Red dots on handguns has become a tool that is invaluable and both civilians and law enforcement are changing over to them. Scott is an interesting person who does not have a police or military background but made it to Master class in USPSA and came up with a terrific training program. Jon Dufresne and Scott Jedlinski are two up in coming instructors. They are the new generations of firearms preachers who take what is known about shooting and format it to a more modern approach. Jon is a former Army Ranger who now teaches for Sage Dynamics and for Frank Proctor. Jon not only was a guest of the podcast but was a Shooter’s Summit instructor. Scott Jedlinski or “Jedi” teaches under his own company, Modern Samurai Project and is an avid Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and master class competitive shooter. Both teach classes with the red dot sight on pistols and that’s where I was with them. On today’s podcast, I’m recording a different kind of interview. I interview both Jon and Jedi after day one of the Modern Samurai Project’s Red Dot Pistol Course at the awesome Homestead Training Center in Homestead FL. So a couple of notes. Yes, this is being recorded on a live range at the end of the day and “That Guy” showed up at the very end to shoot in the next bay. He had to dump his ammo. So that being said, there will be some gunshots in the background. Also, I learned that the type of mic you use on a range is important and I had to use some noise reduction on Jon’s and Jedi’s tracks..so you don’t need to tell me your heard some hiss in the background. You might not notice it. I’m learning the red dot myself and I’ll be competing with it and this year’s IPSC Nationals next week. Lots of knowledge bombs in the range podcast. Scott Jedlinski also known as “Jedi” which is a very cool nickname to have, better than “gopher”..Scott is the brains and teacher for the Modern Samurai Project which is his training company. His primary focus is teaching students the fundamentals of shooting their handguns with mini red dot sights or RDS. Red dots on handguns are here and will be the future of shooting. Jedi also competes in USPSA as a Master class shooter in Carry Optics. He uses competition as a way to becoming a better shooter. Scott is a strong proponent of hand to hand combat and regularly studies Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The similarity between BJJ and shooting is something Jedi teaches to his students. Finally, Scott is a sponsored shooter and shoots for Agency Arms with their Glock 34. Three takeaways from today's episode are 1) proving that red dot sights can shoot fine in the rain 2) Cat Crap is not from the litter box but is actually a great product that keeps glass from fogging up and 3) you can run a compensated pistol as an every day carry gun. I am very excited to bring you an up in coming instructor today, so let's get into the interview.
