Today we need to address alarming developments in press freedom as independent journalists, including Don Lemon, face federal charges for violating the FACE Act of 1994. Then Liz reintroduces a case we covered on True Sunlight #134 involving Anijah Yarnell, who claimed self-defense after shooting Michael Pennington in 2020. However, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson unusually appealed the decision—contrasting sharply with Wilson's public opposition to charge others like Weldon Boyd and Bradley Williams. Then we're sharing an excerpt from Liz and Mandy's recent appearance on Laura Richard's Crime Analyst Podcast (Episode 303). Richards, Matney, and Farrell emphasize the critical role of independent journalism and sustained public pressure in preventing cases from being swept away. ☕ Cups Up! ⚖️ Episode References Crime Analyst Ep 303 On YouTube Crime Analyst Ep. 303 Audio: Mica Francis: Analyzing the Federal Charges Against John Paul Miller with Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell “Journalist Don Lemon charged with federal civil rights crimes after covering anti-ICE church protest” - AP News, Updated Jan 30, 2026

It's easy to feel discouraged when things take an unexpected turn, especially after a string of successes. Keith Kalfas spoke candidly about how many of us lose momentum and slip from a place of focus into a phase of discouragement. The pandemic and other worldly changes affected the rhythm for countless entrepreneurs, leaving even the most driven individuals wondering, "What happened to my mojo?" But grit isn't about never falling—it's about how you get back up. As Keith Kalfas recounted, even successful people can become complacent or coast after achieving certain goals. The key is continuing to show up, do the work, and push beyond the low points. Today You'll learn: Real techniques for building rapport with customers, winning trust, and closing higher-value jobs by listening and being thorough in your proposals. How to handle disrespect and tough clients while maintaining your composure and not letting negative energy bleed into future opportunities. The role of faith and honoring God, especially during tough times, and how gratitude and surrender can shift your perspective. A reminder not to compare yourself to others, but to water your own grass, focus on your purpose, and trust the process. "You have everything that it takes. You have it inside of you." - Keith Kalfas Topics Covered 00:00:20 – Introduction: The Power of Grit Keith Kalfas introduces the theme of grit and acknowledges that while many people received the invitation to show up, only those with real determination did. He sets the stage for stories about personal growth and challenges. 00:01:04 – Business Struggles and Finding Focus Again Reflecting on the ups and downs of building a landscaping business, Keith Kalfas discusses losing momentum, dealing with discouragement, and reigniting the spark to "crush it" daily. 00:02:09 – A Year of Change: Systems, Hiring, and Sales A breakdown of how Keith Kalfas refined his business—hiring new staff, implementing CRM systems, perfecting sales processes, and improving client communication. 00:03:13 – On the Job: Quoting and Communicating with Customers Storytime: Keith Kalfas shares his customer quoting strategy, including building trust, itemizing scope, and presenting solutions that increase job value. 00:04:26 – Upselling and Turning Small Jobs into Big Wins How offering additional services and identifying new opportunities can dramatically increase job size and revenue. 00:06:14 – The Importance of Professionalism and Presence Tips on balancing being relaxed with showing you're a busy, in-demand professional—and why customers respond positively to organized, time-efficient service providers. 00:08:43 – Navigating Pricing and Customer Negotiations Keith Kalfas shares a tough story on maintaining composure and integrity during uncomfortable price negotiations, teaching listeners how to stand firm and know your value. 00:12:27 – Personal History: Overcoming Hardship and Loss Sharing personal challenges, including homelessness and the loss of his mother, Keith Kalfas demonstrates how grit is forged through real-life struggles and how it shapes character. 00:18:04 – The Demarcation Line: Choosing Who You Will Be A motivational segment about how to respond when life gets tough—choose grit, honor God, and don't let setbacks define you. 00:20:10 – Closing Big Jobs: Communication & Detailed Quotes A step-by-step breakdown of how Keith Kalfas closes high-ticket landscaping jobs with ultra-transparent, itemized quotes, speed, and clear client messaging. 00:28:36 – Managing Large Jobs: Ongoing Communication Learn why ongoing updates, daily text threads, and clear expectations keep clients satisfied and jobs running smoothly—even through unexpected construction delays. 00:32:46 – Handling Payment Issues & Staying Calm When final payment delays happen, Keith Kalfas shares the importance of staying calm and following up professionally, instead of reacting emotionally. 00:34:22 – Standing Up for Yourself: Defending Your Work Ethically Keith Kalfas describes a situation where a competitor tried to undermine his work, and how he asserted his expertise and maintained client relationships with integrity and "grit." 00:38:03 – Faith & Gratitude Through Difficult Losses Stories of loss—giving his dog CPR and the emotional aftermath—lead to advice on honoring God through both good times and hardships. 00:40:24 – The Power of Self-Talk & Comparison A closing reminder on speaking positivity, avoiding negative self-talk, and focusing on your unique path instead of comparing to others. Key Takeaways Hold onto your grit, even in adversity: When faced with challenging clients or situations, don't let frustration or disrespect shake your confidence or authenticity. Staying rooted in professionalism and self-respect—even when emotions run high—can turn obstacles into defining moments. Remember, your response shapes your reputation and future success. Honor clear communication and integrity in your work: Detailed transparency with clients (from itemized quotes to consistent updates) builds trust and can prevent misunderstandings. When complications arise—like unexpected delays or doubts from clients—stand firm in your value, remain honest, and educate patiently. Acting with integrity, even under pressure, pays off in the long run. Never compare your journey to others; walk your own path: Whether it's hearing about others crushing it or feeling behind, putting energy into self-comparison drains you and clouds your purpose. Focus on watering your own grass—invest in your unique mission and efforts. Fulfillment and growth come from staying true to your story, not chasing someone else's. In this episode of The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, host Ginny Yurich sits down with theologian and author Joel Muddamalle for a conversation that feels both ancient and urgently relevant. Drawing from Joel's new book The Unseen Battle, they explore spiritual warfare not as something sensational or fear-driven, but as a daily, lived reality shaped by attention, truth, imagination, and small choices. From why Eve didn't panic when the serpent spoke, to how modern distractions quietly gain a foothold in our lives, to why standing firm matters more than fighting harder, this episode invites listeners to see Scripture in full color and to recover a grounded, hopeful confidence. It's thoughtful, accessible theology for parents, skeptics, and anyone who senses there's more happening beneath the surface of ordinary life.
Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell look at how Boyd and Williams' claims of self-defense compare to that of Anijah Yarnell. Yarnell killed a man in 2020 which the court determined was a justified Stand Your Ground shooting in 2023 and the state is appealing that decision. It seems Attorney General Alan Wilson has two different ways of determining “who” qualifies for Stand Your Ground immunity … and it seems to have nothing to do with the evidence and EVERYTHING to do with who the shooters are. Also on today's show, we continue our investigation of the shooting homicides of Charity Beallis and her two 5-year old twins in Bonanza, Arkansas. No arrests have been made and multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Secret Service are working on the case. While Charity's husband Randy Beallis denies any wrong doing, we're diving deeper into Randy's past that reveals an allegedly violent history. A history that prosecutors acknowledged when they offered him a sweetheart deal for choking Charity in 2025. Two months after that plea deal… Charity and the twins were dead.
State Senate President and Republican candidate for Attorney General, Warren Petersen (LD14) opens the show live and in person for discussion with Seth on Attorney General Kris Mayes’ recent comments implying it was lawful to shoot masked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers due to Arizona’s Stand Your Ground laws. Get involved in his campaign for Attorney General today at www.petersenforag.com! We're joined by John Dombroski, founder and president of Grand Canyon Planning Associates. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes joined Bruce & Gaydos in studio to talk about what rights you have if you encounter ICE agents. She also shares her thoughts on an ICE internal memo, Arizona's Stand Your Ground law and more.
Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell uncover explosive testimony that tears Weldon Boyd's self-defense narrative to shreds. In newly released depositions from the Scott Spivey wrongful death case, Witness No. 2 reveals disturbing allegations that Weldon Boyd's attorney may have attempted to coerce witness testimony—raising serious questions about just how far the Good Ole Boy network will go to protect one of their own. We're also looking at how Dr. Randy Beallis' second wife died from a gunshot wound to the forehead. Now his third wife, Charity, and their six-year-old twins are murdered the day after their final divorce hearing. The Sebastian County, Arkansas investigation raises disturbing questions: Why isn't Randy the prime suspect? Plus updates on JP Miller's federal trial scheduled for March 2026, Alex Murdaugh's upcoming Supreme Court hearing in February, and the crucial Stand Your Ground hearing in the Scott Spivey case set for February 17-20. Oh! And we hope to see you in Denver on Friday, February 6 if you're nearby. Join LUNASHARK Premium for the link to RSVP!

I think the question people are asking when they ask that is, ‘do you believe in love'? And love to me is the most powerful thing in the universe

JOIN SHERI HORN HASAN for this & more Astro News You Can Use! @ https://www.karmicevolution.com/astrologically-speaking which drops today, January 16!There's safety in numbers, folks, that's what this Capricorn New Moon tells us now as it occurs at 28'44" Capricorn at 11:52 a.m. PT & 2:52 p.m. ET January 18! This Saturn-ruled lunation tells us it's time to get serious about being more responsibly focused on standing our ground, while it's earthy trines by both luminaries, Mercury, & Mars to Uranus--still Rx in Taurus--denote an easy path if we stick together now. Earthy practical Capricorn is known to be success oriented in terms of physical manifestation. If it's not practical, the Capricorn archetype doesn't want to waste time on pie-in-the-sky dreams with no possible way of becoming reality. The waning portion of the last monthly lunar cycle--which began with the Sagittarius New Moon on December 19--asked us to go deep about our true sense of what is moral, ethical, & just. The Cancer New Moon on January 3 then revealed with stark clarity exactly how much immortality & injustice exists in the world around us.This Capricorn New Moon tells us now that we must get serious about understanding this reality, and that the only recourse is to band together to stand firm against those who perpetrate such ethical violations & moral injustices. This lunation occurs in the U.S. natal Sibly chart's 2nd House of values & resources, & conjunct its natal Pluto at 27'33 Capricorn. So we KNOW we're being asked to empower this nation by drawing greater distinctions between our own true values and those of the powers that be—especially those who control our resources & finances now.Meanwhile this lunation's multiple trines to Uranus Rx in Taurus in the 12th House of the unconscious realm, beckon us to awaken to an easier pathway to resist those who are trying to impose their unwelcome (& unrealistic) set of values on us. And the Capricorn New Moon says their values are not lasting ones as they are impractical in nature & therefore—in the end—realistically unachievable.AQUARIUS SEASON HAS BEGUN: TIME TO SEE THE LIGHT & KNOW THAT TOGETHER WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL!Venus enters Aquarius January 17, and the Sun, Mercury, & Mars all follow suit on January 19, 20, & 23, respectively. After the past month of governmental initiated brute force used against those in cities across America, this influx of Aquarian energy frees us to think differently about how to combat such injustices now. It's clear in retrospect that the past week of tense squares by Venus, Sun, Mars, & Mercury in Capricorn to wounded healer Chiron & chaos bringer dwarf planet Eris in Aries manifested in violent actions against protestors (read: literal wounding.) This includes not only the death or Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis Minnesota on January 7, but the more recent wounding of others, including the young man in L.A. who's permanently blind in one eye now after being shot in the face with pepper balls by an ICE agent. The symbolism of this particular act of violence lies in the fact that Uranus has been retrograding from 29-degrees of Taurus—known as the Pleiades point which is associated with “blindness”—back to 27-degrees Taurus, a degree away from the fixed star Algol.Algol represents an “off with his head” energy as its meaning derives from Greek mythology's hero Perseus who slayed the snake-haired gorgon Medusa by cutting off her head & ending her ability to turn people to stone with her gaze. After Uranus stations direct again at 27'28” Taurus on February 3, it will once again hit the Pleiades point from early April through to April 25 when Uranus reenters Gemini. By then it's highly likely that even those who've been blind to the depths of the immorality of the people who run the U.S. government will begin to see the light. In addition, when Uranus again transits through 29 degrees of Taurus, it will affect those whose birth charts contain the fixed star Regulus at that degree. You know, folks like Donald Trump, who's 29'55” Leo Ascendant conjoins Regulus, known as the king maker & king breaker. That's because, while Regulus predicts the potential for reaching great heights of power, it also portends a huge fall from grace if one uses such power for evil ends such as retribution against perceived enemies. Trump clearly has no astrologer to guide him, else he'd have been forewarned not to act as he has since he became president a second time in January 2025.It's clear that group sentiment has been changing how they value Trump's actions in office thus far (Uranus Rx in Taurus.) You know, like his threat this past week to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 which empowers the U.S. President to nationally deploy the U.S. military and to federalize the National Guard units of the individual states. That act allows the president to do this in specific circumstances, such as for the suppression of civil disorder, of insurrection, and of armed rebellion against the federal government of the U.S.Invoking this—along with Trump's other plans such his desire to increase ICE's funding, change mail-in election ballot rules, attempt to take over Greenland, & the confiscation & selling of seized Venezuelan oil & depositing the $500M proceeds in an offshore account, among so many others—will not sit well with Americans. And that displeasure is likely to make itself felt as Uranus once again reaches its square to his natal Regulus/Ascendant & Mars in April as the two political party's primaries will be well under way. While he's not on the ballot in November 2026, plenty of his Republican minions are. And it's not looking good for them—assuming we, the people, can stand together against such a tyrannical regime that's killing people in the streets, & detaining, jailing, & deporting others without due process. EMPOWERMENT VERSUS DISEMPOWERMENTEmpowerment becomes the word of this coming week as Venus, Mercury, the Sun, & Mars all conjoin with Pluto in Aquarius between January 19 & 27—especially since we may hear another (potentially surprising) announcement by the powers that be when the Sun conjoins Mercury in Aquarius between now & January 21.This sets off new synodic cycles which will eventually reach their peaks when Venus in Leo opposes Pluto on June 17, & the Sun follows suit July 26. Mercury does so on August 11, while the one to watch is the Mars opposition to Pluto in Aquarius on October 3. Bear in mind the latter will occur a month before the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, meaning after the party's nominees have slugged it out during the earlier primary period.Keep in mind also that during this period, by mid-October, transiting Mars in Leo will have conjoined with Trump's 12th H Pluto at 10 Leo, and will be headed for his natal Mars return, which occurs after the election on November 18.Empowering ourselves now against what's potentially to come IF it looks like Trump's party is losing power after November 3 may well involve bracing ourselves for dealing with an increasingly desperate, wounded, cornered animal. Just a head's up...Join us for all this & more Astro News You Can Use—including a deeper look at the big picture overview of the current Saturn/Pluto, Saturn/Neptune, & Jupiter/Saturn cycles--& what they portend for the future when you tune in, starting today at 11 a.m. PT & 2 p.m. ET, @ https://www.karmicevolution.com/astrologically-speaking... See you then!! Namaste…#karmicevolution, #astronewsyoucanuse, #astrologicallyspeaking, #capricornnewmoon, #responsiblegroupaction

According to a WSJ analysis, the epicenter for Stand Your Ground killings is in the state where the laws were first enacted: Florida. From 2021 through 2024, the Jacksonville area had a larger share of its homicides classified as justifiable killings by civilians than any U.S. city or county with a population greater than 500,000. WSJ's Hannah Critchfield reports on the law's unintended consequences and one case labelled as a self-defense killing, where no killer came forward at all. Valerie Bauerlein hosts and reveals a major update on the Scott Spivey case. Content Warning: There are mentions of racial violence in this episode. If you have sensitivities around this subject, I urge you to take breaks as needed, or step away if it becomes too difficult. In 2023, the murder of Ajike “AJ” Owens shook the country–another Black mother taken too soon in a moment of senseless and unnecessary violence. In the years since, AJ’s story as told on Netflix’s ‘The Perfect Neighbor’ has prompted a larger conversation around race, fear, Stand Your Ground laws, and the everyday realities and dangers Black families navigate in America and in their communities. But AJ was more than a victim of racial violence, she was a woman whose life was filled with love, ambition, and unapologetic hope for her children and her future. Today, I’m pleased to be joined by two women who are integral to carrying AJ’s story forward with courage and purpose. Pamela Dias, AJ’s mother and co-founder of the Standing in the Gap Fund, has turned unfathomable grief into a mission to protect families who face race-based violence and its aftermath. Here with Pamela is her co-founder Takema Robinson, producer, and advocate for racial justice who helped bring AJ’s story to the masses. In this conversation, we explore how their relationship formed, what it means to tell a story shaped by grief, and how storytelling, advocacy, and memory can become pathways to collective healing. We talk about community, justice, and the ongoing fight to ensure that AJ and so many others like her are not forgotten. It’s not every day Bridget gets to talk to one of her heroes! Soledad O’Brien has built her career on stories that hit hard and stick with you, winning multiple Emmys and Peabody awards along the way. Her work has inspired Bridget since she was a young girl, watching her coverage of the emerging Internet in the 1990s. In this wide-ranging interview, Soledad talks about her two new documentaries, both of which are the subject of considerable online discussion. 'The Perfect Neighbor,' on Netflix, tells the tragic story of AJ Owens and examines the legal and systemic failures that almost allowed her death to go unpunished due in part to Florida's stand-your-ground law. 'The Devil is Busy,' now streaming on HBO Max, follows a day in the life of Tracii, the head of security at a Georgia abortion clinic, and the relentless work she does to keep the clinic operating safely. The documentary offers a powerful, ground-level, humanizing view of the challenges faced by those working to provide reproductive healthcare in the current landscape. On this day before Thanksgiving, Wed. 26 Nov. 2025 our topic is what I wrote about for Orange County Gun Owners/San Diego County Gun Owners blog (now published at Gun Owners Radio blog) 9 April 2020, what I called then "Two Types of Self Defense." One type is against the threat the immoral criminal aggressor -- the training appropriate to that threat might involve self defense training with weapons or martial arts and situational awareness. The second type of self defense, though, is self defense against the criminal justice system that wrongly sides with the immoral criminal against victims trying to defend themselves. Michael Schwartz posted my guest post but you can see my name in the byline as the author. You can read my 9 April 2020 article on Gun Owners Radio blog here : https://gunownersradio.com/two-types-of-self-defense/ Retired Army Ranger Captain Barry D. Todd describes his experience with both types of self defense in his book "Stand Your Ground: One Man's Self-Defense Nightmare." It's available on Barnes and Noble or Amazon or on the Defense Resources Foundation website, DefenseResourcesFoundation.org . The best way to get the book is to visit The foundation he started is dedicated to preventing this kind of victimization of victims by our criminal justice system. There is a link to donate. Enjoy our conversation, buy the book and read it, and enjoy your Thanksgiving 2025. The Republican Professor is a pro-two-types-of-self-defense, pro-standing-your-ground podcast. The Bible tells us that we are in a spiritual battle—an unseen war in the heavenly realm that rages over us. Satan will try to tempt, discourage, deceive, confuse, and harm us. He and his demonic principalities want to destroy our marriages, our families, our churches, and our very lives. But in Ephesians 6, Paul explains how we can take a stand against the Enemy and trust the Lord to fight for us. In today's study, Pastor Gary unpacks this passage and then prays over all those who are under spiritual attack.

The gang's all here, and this week they cover IT: Welcome to Derry, Nobody Wants This Season 2, A return to A House of Dynamite, Regretting You, and The Perfect Neighbor. We open the show jumping right into the hottest new series, IT: Welcome to Derry. Kevin and Andrew have both watched the first episode, and Kevin's seen the second. Both guys have enjoyed the show so far, and Kevin keeps the second episode talk pretty spoiler-free. But the show itself is BRUTAL. It is like Stranger Things dialed up to (pun intended) Eleven. If horror is your thing, this is an absolute must-watch. Taking a break from the absolute massacre that is the opening of IT, Lauren talks about the latest season of Nobody Wants This on Netflix. It stars Adam Brody and Kristen Bell as an on-again, off-again couple dealing with the strains of a potential interfaith relationship. That makes it sound very dramatic, but it really is a lot of fun. The leads are great, but a lot of credit goes to the supporting cast, too. It's a well-rounded show that does risk getting tropey if they don't get creative with the 3rd season. That being said, this one (and the first one) is worth a watch. After some talk about things happy and fun, Andrew takes us back to last week's episode for a minute to talk about A House of Dynamite. His timeline was hit by several people who absolutely hated the ending, so the guys had to clear the air as to what this film was truly about. Remember, it's not about the destination, it's about the journey. And now that it's been a week, the guys can be a little more spoilery. So if you haven't watched it yet, and you should, maybe pause the show, watch it, then come back. Next up, Lauren talks about the new film, Regretting You. It stars Mason Thames, McKenna Grace, Allison Williams, and Dave Franco. It's not an entirely unformulaic romance film, but it does have its share of little twists and turns that keep it interesting. It may not blow you away, but if it's your type of film, you're likely to really enjoy it. Kevin closes out the show, reluctantly, by quickly discussing the new Netflix documentary, The Perfect Neighbor. It's an interesting film, as all the footage is either from interrogation rooms or, more often, body cam footage. It's the tragic story of a racially charged shooting in Florida and how it ultimately ties into the Stand Your Ground laws. It's fascinating and heartbreaking, but an interesting story worth watching. Facebook: @apncpodcast Twitter: @APNCPodcast Instagram: AllPopNoCulture

In a quiet Florida neighborhood, a simple dispute between neighbors turned deadly. When Ajike “AJ” Owens — a devoted mother of four — knocked on her neighbor's door to defend her children, she was met with a bullet fired through the door by Susan Lorincz, the woman who called herself “The Perfect Neighbor.” Netflix's gripping new documentary The Perfect Neighbor shines a spotlight on that tragic night — exposing a story of fear, race, and the controversial use of Florida's “Stand Your Ground” law. In this episode, Winnie chats with friend, Rev Tim Christopher, to expose all the layers of the real events behind the documentary — from the escalating tensions that led to AJ's death, to the public outrage and the painful questions about justice and prejudice in modern America. The Perfect Neighbor debuted this month as the #1 film on Netflix, bringing attention to Stand Your Ground laws through the story of Ajike “AJ” Owens. AJ was killed in 2023 by her neighbor Susan Lorincz, a woman known throughout the neighborhood as “The Karen." This documentary, told through police bodycam footage of the confrontations leading up to the horrific murder, is part of a movement for social change. On this MiniPod, our hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum speak with the mother of Ajike Owens, Pamela Dias, and executive producer of the film, Takema Robinson. In honor of Ajike’s legacy, these two co-founded the Standing In The Gap Fund with a vision to transform grief into action and seek justice for those impacted by racial violence. Florida’s first-in-the-nation Stand Your Ground law played a key role in Ajike’s murder. Her killer researched the law BEFORE shooting Ajike and using it as her legal defense. Ajike, Takema, and SO many others are seeking to overturn the law that’s disproportionately used to justify murdering members of the Black community. In February 2022, Florida deputies responded to a service call in which a white woman complained about Black children in her neighborhood playing near her property. Though deputies found the behavior innocuous, Susan Lorincz continued to call the police on the kids, fueling growing tension among neighbors. Then in June 2023, Ajike Owens went to Lorincz's door to confront her after the woman allegedly threw a roller skate at her son. Within minutes, gunshots rang out—leaving one woman dead and another in custody. Detectives were left to determine whether this was a case of self-defense or a premeditated attack. Note: The Perfect Neighbor begins streaming on 10/17.The documentary The Perfect Neighbor, now streaming on Netflix, is shot almost entirely through police body-worn camera footage. It recounts Lorincz's slow burn from Karen to killer and examines the racial disparity in the application of Florida's Stand Your Ground law—asking whether the suspect was motivated by fear or by anger.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "THE PERFECT NEIGHBOR" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 11 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell share the horrifying details contained in the 105-page federal court transcript from the June 12 detention hearing of the now-former South Carolina House of Representatives legislator — and now-former state Freedom Caucus leader — Robert J. May III. RJ May. Though the tip about RJ's alleged activity was delivered on March 31, it would take nearly three months for that tip to make its way to South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson's Office, another week to make its way to the sheriff's office and another three months before RJ's house would be raided. Mandy and Liz talk about what went down in the hearing and how it's even more egregious to know how few people in power have spoken out about RJ May's alleged actions. Also on the show, Myrtle Beach churchy business bro “pastor” John-Paul Miller was in court again this week for the final frivolous lawsuit he filed against a protester. Spoiler alert: JP lost. Again. Plus, a look at an opinion piece written about the Scott Spivey killing case and why it's wrong to conclude that South Carolina's Stand Your Ground law means it's OK to shoot and kill anyone so long as you feared for your life at the time. Let's dive in!
Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell continue to connect the dots in the Scott Spivey shooting case as they impatiently wait for South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to appoint a special prosecutor to revisit what has turned out to be one of the most corrupt police investigations in state history. On this week's episode: Did shooter Weldon Boyd's months-long obsession over his ex-fiancé have him in a fighting-mood on the day he and his friend Bradley Williams killed Scott? In SLED's download of Bradley's phone there were 60 screenshots of text messages between Weldon and the mother and grandmother of his son, showing Weldon's increasing anger over his inability to control and manipulate his former fiancé. Those messages, along with court records, recorded phone calls and social media posts reveal that Weldon wasn't just momentarily upset about his broken engagement the afternoon of Sept. 9, 2023, when he encountered Scott on Highway 9 in Horry County… Mandy and Liz share their new timeline on Weldon's potential state of mind as he tousled with Scott on the road, along with Weldon's tactical messages, seemingly crafted to create a paper trail for the narrative he wanted everyone around him to believe. Let's dive in!
Why Did It Take So Long to Arrest An SC Lawmaker Charged With Distributing Videos of Men Raping Babies? Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are accustomed to being disgusted by politicians who happily take part in the Good Ole Boy system when it comes to protecting bad actors from taking accountability. But this latest case has them screaming with anger. Last month, South Carolina state Rep. Robert John “RJ” May III was arrested and charged with 10 federal counts of distributing child sex abuse materials. So why is it taking so long for RJ May to be removed from office? Why was there so much hesitation and delay before arresting him? And why was his case given to two agencies that had very personal ties to him? Mandy and Liz explore the answers to those questions, as well as the biggest question of all: Why aren't men accused of perpetuating such vile and heinous abuse of children — including babies — not seen as immediate potential threats to society? Plus, (24:30) Part Two of our real-time coverage of the Scott Spivey shooting (AKA the Horry County Police Department corruption case) about Weldon Boyd's star witness, Witness No. 1. Mandy and Liz continue connecting the dots and digging into the inconsistencies in witness testimony and have found themselves at a complete loss for why the South Carolina Attorney General's Office continues to refuse to appoint a special prosecutor to the state's biggest “Stand Your Ground” case. Let's dive in!
