Gun Fights Step right up for "Gun Fights," the high-octane segment hosted by Nick Lynch, where our cast members go head-to-head in a game show-style showdown! Each contestant tries to prove their gun knowledge dominance. It's a wild ride of bids, bluffs, and banter—who will come out on top? Tune in to find out! Agency Brief English Bill of Rights 1689 COLD OPEN: Back in 1689, the British figured out that a government with a standing army and disarmed citizens was a bad idea. Then they forgot. THE VILLAIN: KING JAMES II (THE ORIGINAL ANTI-GUNNER) The Motive: James II wanted absolute power and a Catholic takeover of a Protestant nation. The Tactics: Used "Game Laws" (hunting regs) to disarm commoners. Selectively disarmed political enemies (Protestants) while arming loyalists (Catholics). Built a standing army in peacetime to intimidate the populace. The Lesson: Gun control was created to secure political power, not public safety. THE REVOLUTION: THE "GLORIOUS" HOSTILE TAKEOVER The Invite: Elites ("Immortal Seven") invited William of Orange to invade England. The Flight: James II's military support collapsed; he fled to France. The Contract: Parliament told William: "You can be King, but only if you sign this rights document." THE DOCUMENT: WHAT IT ACTUALLY SAYS The Text: "That the subjects which are Protestants may have arms for their defence suitable to their conditions and as allowed by law." The Wins: Recognized an individual right to have arms. Explicitly stated the purpose was "defence" (not just militia service). Banned standing armies in peacetime without Parliament's consent. The Traps (Bugs): "Suitable to their conditions": Classism. Rich people got better determination of rights. "As allowed by law": The loophole that eventually killed gun rights in the UK. THE AMERICAN UPGRADE (FIXING THE BUGS) The Fix: Madison and the Founders looked at the English model and patched the holes. No Classism: Removed "suitable to conditions." Rights are for everyone, poor or rich. No Religion: Removed "Protestants." Rights are for "The People." No Loopholes: Replaced "as allowed by law" with "Shall not be infringed." The Result: The English right was a permission slip from Parliament; the American right is a restriction on the Government. FACT CHECK & MYTH BUSTING Myth: "It was only for militias." Fact: Text says "subjects" (plural individuals) and "for their defence." Myth: "It shows regulation is normal." Fact: It shows that fighting regulation is traditional. The Bill was literally a response to excessive regulation by the King. Hidden Motive: The English elites wanted an armed populace to check the King, but not armed enough to check Parliament. The US Founders wanted the people to check everyone. IMPACT ON YOU (MODERN IMPACT) Supreme Court: In Heller and Bruen, the Court relies on this document to prove that individual gun ownership is an ancient Anglo-American tradition. Litigation: When states try to use "history" to ban guns, we use 1689 to show that disarming citizens is the act of a tyrant, not a legitimate government. Regulatory Creep: Expanding "sensitive places" and "permit requirements" is exactly how the UK used the "allowed by law" loophole to ban everything. We are fighting to keep the "American Upgrade" intact.   WLS is Lifestyle Savage - Doing a 3D printed build based on the Ruger 10/22. If you think you've heard some wild shit from your quote-unquote radical friends then you better strap your ear pussies in for a ride. Upon hitting play you will be greeted by 5 cast members and while it will all seem normal for the first 15 seconds, you will soon find out that these dudes are cooler than your actual friends. Shawn, the head of the dick that is WLS, is always front and center, he runs the show and seemingly has seen it all and sometimes he gets drunk and that's when the real fun happens. Jeremy is likened to the shaft, keeps the cast together, is always the one to brag about his size and multiple times throughout the show he will uncontrollably engorge himself with rage. Aaron and Nick are both like the balls, Nick is the higher up one, closer to the head and friendly with the shaft. Seems to have lots of knowledge about the business but you would never know it. For the most part he is quiet and stays out of the way. But when he is needed, he generally has an answer. Aaron on the other hand, he is the lower one, he is the Ying to Nicks Yang, he always can't help himself with getting in the way, of easy conversation. And the rest of the cast always has fun at the expense of Aaron's well being. That being said these 5 guys will broaden your firearms and associated knowledge with true stories, industry news, first hand experience along with a lot of good laughs. Love the show guys. Keep it up. Oh shit, I forgot the 5th guy. Yeah then there's Savage1r. He's the taint.   ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - from Sigger Jim - I would like to amend my previous review in which i compared the cast to spices. Shawn is Thyme because his hunting stories waste a lot of it. Nick is cream of tarter because hes a little 'tarded, but the good kind of 'tarded. Jeremy is white pepper because white pepper isnt black. Aaron is cumin because all the dudes that cum-in him. Savage is still flour, but unbleached flour this time.   ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - from Craven Moorehead - ▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️ You know, I like having that A-aron character around. His childlike innocence……no……ignorance, brings out the knowledge from Jeremy (the one everyone seems to think is a cunt) and Nick. Sometimes they need to see what a complete neophyte…..no……buffoon would think about a subject, so that they can expound upon the minutiae. Otherwise they would just assume that everyone is privy to the information, and move on. I also enjoy the older fellow with the ptosis of the scrotum. His stories about spoons and hunting and bad decisions sure will put a fellow to sleep. I think that about covers everyone. In closing, I sure do enjoy the podcast. Enough that I renew my cult membership every time the older fellow screws up the billing. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #242 Tom Knighton Bearing Arms, Writer   The first time I met Tom Knighton in person was at a Florida Carry event in 2021. But we've done a number of episodes of the Polite Society Podcast, where I was a co-host and he was a guest. Then there were a number of times when we did The Daily Bullet as co-hosts. Tom is a great guy and writes at Bearing Arms. We had a chance to film a show at the NRA Annual Meetings in Atlanta this year.    Tom grew up in Georgia and has been around firearms his whole life. Growing up in a city, he's still pretty country. His dad was a police officer who hunted with his own dad. It seems crazy, but he said his first press of the trigger was at four years old with a .38 Special. His dad had his hands over Tom's and all he needed to do was press the trigger. Eventually, his dad bought him a Ruger 10/22 and an Enfield Jungle Carbine in .303 British. Unfortunately, later on it had to be sold.    As a young child growing up with his parents and their smart aleck attitudes, it's no wonder where Tom got his snarkiness, which has served him well while writing at Bearing Arms. Then as a Navy corpsman, it didn't really help with his sense of humor, either. Being an anti-authorian, he only lasted four years in the Navy. He was in after the Gulf War but before September 11. He could have gone back in, but he had a 2 month old child and a wife to tend to.   During high school, Tom found out he wasn't too bad at writing. His writing impressed both his teacher and classmates. While writing for a "table top role playing"  blog, he went to a meet up with local liberty minded folks. He talked with someone and started writing about small local politics. Then a local newspaper got a hold of some articles and ran them there, too. Talking with the editor, he was able to pay Tom for some original content. So he considered writing for a living. The editor ended up moving and selling the paper to Tom. Then he ended up losing the newspaper.    After some life tribulations, he started writing for a start up publication. Then another. Both went under. He was able to leverage those gigs into writing for PJ Media. Another friend worked at Red State and he asked if they needed anything. After some conversations, she asked how he was on the Second Amendment. For the first two years, he was writing solo.  They talked about hiring an editor and he was a little miffed. But the editor ended up being Cam Edwards. Tom thought that was also a good idea! Like many of us, one of our goals was to be on NRA TV's Cam & Co. but Tom ended up working with Cam instead. A nice consultation prize.   For Bearing Arms Tom is cranking out about seven articles a day. Then he's got two for Town Hall. Then his own Substack of general politics gets two articles. And he's doing some videos for his YouTube channel, too. Sometimes people send him tips, leads, and stories. Sometimes it's slow and there's a little rehashing of previous content or reaching out to find stories to write. But the "challenges in the 2A community don't change" or end.    Like many others, Tom has a lot going on. Writing for Bearing Arms, for Town Hall Media, and doing his own articles, keeps his schedule full. There are also times when he's running the BA website, too. Plus he's keeping up with family life.    Just for funsies, we take a call from Mike Piwowarski from Arms Room Radio. I was supposed to meet some folks, but I was running late. The background is that when I did a show with Mike in Florida a few years ago, he forgot all the great stories he has. So I had to bring up that Tom has stories. And he remembers them.    Favorite quotes: "The first time I ever pulled the trigger was on a .38 Special when I was four years old." "God forbid we ever in a situation like that, I'm equipped." "We may not have the same level of training, but you never have enough." "You need to get your basic marksmanship better than the guns." "People like when their commentators pop off at the other side." Glock's had a wild year — discontinued models, a confusing Glock V rollout, and now the "unconvertible" pistol that got switched in record time. In this episode, we break down the real story behind the Glock V drama, Brandon Herrera's leak, California's AB 1127 impact, and why some insiders say Glock is walking away from the civilian market entirely. We also pull apart the new Everytown letter targeting Ruger, the political pressure behind these moves, and why the messaging from Glock might have caused more damage than the actual gun design. In this episode, we dive into the timeless shooter's question: If you could only have one gun in one cartridge for the rest of your life, what would it be? Drawing on decades of field experience, practical know-how, and a heavy dose of real-world logic, the discussion ranges from rimfire realities to centerfire versatility and what actually matters in a "one-gun" scenario. Along the way, we get into squirrel hunting, cartridge capability, recoil management, ammo availability, and what separates theoretical choices from practical ones. Whether you're a survivalist, hunter, prepper, minimalist, or just love a spirited debate, this episode gets right to the heart of the "ultimate gun choice" question. Key Takaways Why rimfires still matter — and where they fall short The gray squirrel factor: realistic field performance Centerfire cartridges that punch above their weight Balancing recoil, ammo cost, and availability What "one gun" really means in practical terms Survival vs. hunting vs. everyday versatility The emotional vs. logical sides of cartridge choice Real-world examples from the field How experience shapes the "best gun" answer EPISODE SPONSOR The Guns Podcast is presented by Ruger Firearms. They explore the importance of proper evaluation of gunsmiths, the journey of becoming a skilled gunsmith, and the challenges faced by aspiring gunsmiths. The conversation is filled with real-life examples and practical advice for those interested in the field. Takeaways A gunsmith is more than just a parts assembler. Building ARs does not equate to being a gunsmith. Diagnosis and repair are key skills for gunsmithing. Experience and training are crucial in gunsmithing. Not all who claim to be gunsmiths are qualified. Proper tools are essential for any gunsmithing work. Learning from mistakes is part of the journey. Aspiring gunsmiths should seek mentorship and apprenticeship. Gunsmithing requires humility and a willingness to learn. Passion and patience are vital for success in gunsmithing. The conversation highlights the need for informed decisions regarding caliber choices and the impact of shooting dynamics in high-stress situations. Takeaways The .327 Magnum has a dedicated fanbase but is often misunderstood. Recoil can significantly affect shooting performance, especially in defensive situations. Home defense requires careful consideration of caliber and its effects on hearing and vision. Real-world shooting experience is crucial for understanding firearm effectiveness. Placement of shots is more important than caliber size in defensive situations. Muzzle blast and recoil can impair your ability to respond effectively in a crisis. Training in dynamic environments can reveal the limitations of theoretical knowledge. The .327 Magnum may be more suitable for small game hunting than self-defense. In this episode, Brent Wheat and Roy Huntington discuss the relevance and advantages of pistol caliber carbines (PCCs) in today's firearms landscape. They explore their effectiveness for home defense, the importance of training, and the simplicity of operation that makes them suitable for novice shooters. The conversation also touches on real-world experiences with firearms, the significance of choosing the right weapon for self-defense, and the need for ongoing practice and familiarity with firearms. Takeaways Pistol caliber carbines can be polarizing in the shooting community. They are often overlooked in favor of short-barreled AR platforms. PCCs can be effective for home defense, especially for novices. Shooting a PCC at night can be less disorienting than other firearms. Training and familiarity with firearms are crucial for effective use. Real-world experiences highlight the effectiveness of PCCs in various situations. Choosing the right firearm should consider comfort and ease of use. Simplicity in firearm operation is essential for self-defense situations. It's important to focus on training rather than just the firearm itself EPISODE SPONSOR The Guns Podcast is presented by Ruger Firearms. Your hosts tonight are Jeremy Pozderac, Aaron Krieger, Nick Lynch, and me Shawn Herrin, welcome to the show! -Pew.Deals -Krampus!   Dear WLS OutLore:  So... apart from Jeremy who doesn't use an optic on his EDC because we all know he's a manly hero man that don't need nothing more than iron sights.   What optics do y'all run on your EDC guns? Not just "Swampfox" or "Gideon" just because they're sponsors.. if you're running a Trij or Vortex or Holosun or some other chinese crap or whatever, say so.   Second to this, if the first question wasn't enough... what do you actually have in your rotation? For me it's Shield Plus, or M&P2.0 Fullsize depending on dress/weather. (That's how I'm dressed according to the weather, not whether I'm dressed at all, because if I'm naked then it's a Mossberg 590A1 and a Bodyguard in my prison pocket.)   Jassnibbler:  22 cans. Rugged oculus vs bitty. ?   I Need A Cool Name:  Heritage rough rider (or similar, cheap .22 revolver), send out for barrel to be threaded, add suppressor. Yay or gay? Would that work and be quiet? How about drill and tap for red dot mount?   Karl F:  Hey guys, love the show, keep it up. There are many semiautomatic handguns that don't have manual safeties and personally I prefer them that way. I realized, however, that we rarely see semiautomatic rifles that lack manual safeties. Is there a reason for this, or perhaps am I just ignorant of their existence? Thanks #blamecanada   Zac C:  I have had this question on my mind for sometime, and it recently came back to me during your recent show with Night Fision.   Why is it that so many gun companies and gun accessory companies reside in non gun friendly states?   I can somewhat understand the older company's like Remington and Ruger, and until recently Smith and Wesson, as I assume they were there before the state went stupid. But why are companies like Night Fision starting up companies in states that don't support what they do. I know it easy for me to say move, but I wouldn't want to have my company in a state that is actively trying to shut down the very thing that puts food on my table. So why are companies in very well known non gun friendly states.   Tom P:  I am moving and I sold my gun safe. I am looking to get something like secureit gunstorage. Basically cabinets that are full strength but not fireproof. Im no poor, but I have a larger collection so I am hoping I can find something a little more affordable. Stack-On seem like trash, and secureit is the top end. Is there nothing in the middle? Have you seen or used anything else? I am currently using surplus weapons cabinet from the army - but they only fit shorter guns.   I appreciate the time, -Tom   Naught Gape Horn:  What size suppressor would you use for a Remington 700 chambered in .22-250?   The winner of this week's swag pack is Tom P! #303 The Truth About Cop Firearms Training: Myths, Failures, and Real Stories

GUNS Magazine Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 3, 2025 37:01 Transcription Available

In this episode, Brent Wheat and Roy Huntington bust one of the biggest myths about law enforcement: that every police officer is a firearms expert.  Drawing from decades of service as cops, trainers, and gun writers, they pull back the curtain on the reality of police firearms proficiency — or the lack thereof. From shocking stories of rusted-in revolvers and mismatched ammo to the harsh truth about agency qualification standards, they reveal why most officers fall far short of public expectations. And more importantly, they explain what this means for concealed carriers, why complacency is so dangerous, and how regular, disciplined training — not a badge — defines true firearms expertise. Key Takeaways • The Big Myth: The public assumes cops are gun experts, but most only meet the bare minimum standards. • 10-80-10 Rule: About 10% of officers are experts, 80% do the minimum, and 10% should not carry at all. • Agency Reality: With 15,000+ mostly small agencies nationwide, qualifications are often just 25 rounds once or twice a year. • Horror Stories: Real cases include a revolver rusted into its holster, a “one-shot” SWAT 1911, and a detective's revolver loaded with random desk-drawer ammo. • Complacency Kills: Shooting is a perishable skill—both officers and armed citizens must avoid complacency and train consistently. • Dry Fire Works: Tools like Mantis X10 make home practice effective for maintaining fundamentals. • Personal Responsibility: Unlike officers, private citizens can't fall back on minimum standards—your life depends on your training. Your hosts tonight are Jeremy Pozderac, Aaron Krieger, Nick Lynch, and me Shawn Herrin, welcome to the show! pew.deals - Dear WLS Trucker Matt - Oh boy, this is gonna be a long one. Multiple questions. I'd apologize for it, but you guys are like the Dr. Ruth of the gun world, minus the sex advice, thank god.  It's my understanding from listening over the years that possession of both full auto M16/M4 lower parts kit with the auto sear and M16-cut lower receivers is fully legal as long as the dreaded third hole is not drilled in the lowers. Do you guys know which manufacturers sell lowers with the M16-cut instead of the high shelf? Just curious (not bi-curious, A-Aron) for reasons... Jeremy, do the RET4RD lowers have the M-16 cut, and if so, do you have any left available?  I have a 6.5 Creedmoor AR10 that I pieced together using Aero M5 lower, upper and handguard, Spikes BCG and Criterion 18inch barrel. I have a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24x50 first focal plane scope that I want to mount on it. I know it's not an ideal scope, but I got it for free. Can you recommend a good 30mm tube mount or rings that won't break the bank, preferably 20 MOA for longer range.  Salma Hayek, Dame Helen Mirren, Jane Seymour (of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and Wedding Crashers fame). Fuck one, marry one, kill one. Discuss. Keep up the great work guys. The WLS shows are the highlight of my week. Pecker McPeckerson - If you had to start your journey into the gun cumunity over, How, in 2025, would you get into the industry? a gun store, a range, a podcast, etc.You cannot use any contacts you already have from the gun community. You are starting from scratch with just the guns you have purchased and basic knowledge of firearms. Ny(e)gerski - You guys talk down alot about shadow systems, but I'd like to be a bit contrarian. When I bought mine, I was looking for something g19 sized, reliable, safe, and a bit upgraded. I considered building one on a p80 or a faxon frame...but then I saw the cr920 elite. Metal mags, upgraded trigger, grip texture, optic cut, etc. All for 750 bucks. I'll admit they have gone up in price more than they should (i.e. kanik) and their marketing department with the wording....really guys.... my question is, have you guys looked at their optic cut? It's pretty neat, fits most all of the different cuts without plates. It uses little spacers that you have to shoehorn the optic in where the screws have almost no pressure on them. Maybe it would be a good option to license to other manufacturers? Ps. as a fuel driver in the Midwest, there are pretty much 2 grades of fuel...subgrade which is around 84 octane, and premium which is 91. Those 2 fuels get either blended together, blended with ethanol, or both to create all the different fuels you get at the station. 84 with 10% ethanol gets you to 87octane. 84 with 15% ethanol gets you 88octane. 84 with a little 91 gets you 87 with 0 ethanol...etc. we were hoping to see you guys at goals, but had to change our vacation days from an adoption finally having an end date right after, hope you guys had a blast! Shaak&Awe - Curious! Can I use a crush washer on a direct tread suppressor? Mark B - Im looking to get a Ruger 10/22 and plan to put a scope on it, probably an old 2.5-10 Tasco I have laying around. I like the look of the heavy 16” barrel, like on model 31197. Is the bull barrel of any practical use on a 22? I do plan to do some off hand shooting, but most will be from a bipod or front bag. Ruger makes a lite model that gives the look of the heavy barrel but is much less weight, however it costs significantly more. I have no plans to compete with this, just a fun shooter.
