“If you want to make change, you've got to make noise.” A call to action in the political sense conveys boldness and focus. It's about drawing attention and speaking loudly about one's convictions, with a sense of urgency and persistence. To longtime outspoken advocate and US Senator Ron Wyden, that's what you'd call chutzpah – and his upcoming book sets out to inspire that same quality of action-driven audacity in Americans of all ages. It Takes Chutzpah: How to Fight Fearlessly for Progressive Change acts as a reflection of Wyden's decades of public service and as a motivational manifesto to push people forward. Noted throughout his career in government for championing civil rights, sensible ideas, and strategic alliances that strive to get pressing bills passed, Wyden understands the importance of strong, loud community and charting new pathways. In It Takes Chutzpah, Wyden explores the long history of the Yiddish word chutzpah, the many interpretations of it across Jewish culture, and how he sees the trait as a tool to reclaim idealism and enact positive change. Wyden compels individuals and groups alike to look at the objectives before them with this boldness in mind, as well as conviction in their values. Wyden touches on the importance of free speech, healthcare, reproductive rights, a clean environment, and regulating the impacts of Big Tech throughout his political tenure. He explores how campaigning for the preservation of those values has been bolstered over the years– and even offers “Ron's 12 Rules of Chutzpah” as a guide to defying convention and achieving progress. It Takes Chutzpah stresses that unapologetic volume and the nerve to keep fighting can prove crucial in accomplishing goals, creating allies, and moving brazenly forward together. Ron Wyden is an American politician and longtime advocate in the areas of civil rights, internet freedom, healthcare, and more. He currently serves as the senior United States senator from Oregon and Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance. He has previously held positions in the U.S. House of Representatives and as the Chair of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. State Representative Liz Berry represents Washington's 36th Legislative District, located in the shadow of Seattle's Space Needle. She is a passionate advocate for ending gun violence, combating plastic pollution, and standing up for working families and consumers against powerful special interests. A lifelong champion for women in leadership and reproductive justice, Rep. Berry served as president of the National Women's Political Caucus of Washington and as a board member for Pro-Choice Washington. She is the former Legislative Director to U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords. Rep. Berry lives with her husband and two young children in Queen Anne. Buy the Book It Takes Chutzpah: How to Fight Fearlessly for Progressive Change Elliott Bay Book Company
Riding Shotgun With Charlie #226 Jim Wallace NRA BOD, NRA 2.0 Candidate GOAL, Executive Director I've known Jim Wallace and Gun Owners Action League as long as I've been a gun owner. I took a class with GOAL in 2002 before I even owned a gun. I became an instructor though GOAL, volunteered teaching with them, and even sat in their booth at the local outdoor expo. Having Jim on the show was a long time coming. And since he's an NRA 2.0 candidate, now was the perfect time. Jim was a letter carrier with the postal system when he joined the Georgetown Fish & Game Club. He got involved in the League of Essex County Sportsmen's Club. After doing some searching around, he found out that the people doing the licensing for hunting and fishing were going to be online and it was going to be most costly. At the time, he wasn't much of a speaker or activist, he was just looking to see where the money was going and why it was going up. This got the attention of the folks at Gun Owners Action League. They invited him to the office to see what he found, and they figured if he could do this while maintaining a full-time job, they could pay him and he could find out more. Back in the day, Jim spent a lot of time in the Mass State House on Beacon Hill. He was able to spend his days there just talking with the state reps and senators. They often had questions for him about upcoming bills and legislation. He was able to educate and inform them about how this was going to affect hunters, fishers, and shooters. Jim and GOAL have faced so many issues over the years in the anti-gun commonwealth of Massachusetts. We talked about the 1994 AWB and what happened in 2004 when Governor Romney signed what he thought was going to be an improvement to the Mass gun laws, but ended up being a lot of gun control. Sometimes gun owners accept some bad laws to get some better laws that can, and should, be changed later. We cover a lot about the Gun Law Listening Tour of 2023 and how that was a sham hosted by the anti-gun politicians. I covered many of those events on News2A.com. After the tour and before the bill dropped, the main “writer” of the bill was visited by Gabby Giffords. I assumed that she gave the representative a hefty check and the legislation she wanted passed because when addressed about the contents of the bill, the Rep didn't know what was in the bill. We also got into the NRA stuff, covering how the board has been changing for the positive with new people and new blood. Wallace also brings up that NY AG Letitia James could be the person credited with saving the NRA by going after the association. As with all the episodes with the NRA 2.0 candidates, I want to emphasize that the 28 candidates running as the reformers need to be elected as a whole if we want to see changes to the NRA BOD. The ballots were sent out in the February NRA magazine issues and need to be in by April 6, 2025. The only members who can vote have to be a dues paying member for 5 years in a row or have a life membership. I went up to where Jim lives to record the episode. He lives on the very North Shore of Boston. We got to drive through his hometown area, see some of the scenery of those who live by the ocean, and where he used to hunt, and still lives an active outdoorsmen lifestyle. Favorite quotes: “I just dug because something didn't look right.” “As a result, I had weekly meetings with his Chief of Staff until he left office.” “They didn't care about input. They already had the bill written.” “We didn't turn that bill 180 but we certainly turned it 175 degrees.” “There's a little bit of education that's going to have to happen with new people being on the board and how things work. But I think we're heading in the right direction.” Elect A New NRA Website https://electanewnra.com/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. We discuss the VP's stance on gun control and an editorial from former Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords as we wonder aloud which of our rights may be taken away in the future.
In this month's series, “The Politics of Murder,” we'll take a look at cases where violent acts are perpetrated upon political figures. First up, a young man begins to lose his grip on reality and fixates on a congressperson whom he targets for assassination. Jared Lee Loughner's mass shooting at a community political event will spark debate regarding violent political rhetoric, gun control laws, and the state of mental health care in the U.S. Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Tucson_shooting http://edition.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/01/08/arizona.shooting.suspect/ http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/01/09/arizona.shooting.investigation/index.html https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/03/27/gabby-giffords-shooting-records/2024589/ http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/01/15/arizona.shooting.images/index.html https://edition.cnn.com/2012/11/08/justice/arizona-loughner-sentencing/index.html https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/03/27/gabby-giffords-shooting-records/2024589/ https://www.cnn.com/2012/08/07/us/arizona-loughner-plea/index.html https://theweek.com/articles/488172/arizona-massacre-should-sarah-palin-share-blame Links: Once Upon a Crime on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@OnceUponACrimePodcast Patreon - www.patreon.com/onceuponacrime

Democrats are looking ahead as they close out the 2024 Democratic National Convention and gear up for the presidential election. The final night, titled“For Our Future,” focused on gun violence and promises for change. And all eyes were on the Vice President as she made history. The first Black woman and first Asian American person to accept a major party's nomination for president, she delivered a momentous speech, introducing herself and promising to campaign for all American people. The final day of the Democratic National Convention featured back to back heavy hitters from Michigan's Governor Gretchen Whitmer to Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren to Gabby Giffords and Senator Mark Kelly, former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and an emotional performance by P!nk, who brought her daughter on stage to sing “What about us.” The grand finale and history making moment came when Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepted the nomination to be the democratic candidate for president. She didn't talk about the groundbreaking nature of it. She did mention that her mother used to say “never let anyone tell you who you are, you show them who you are “and show us she did. We will talk about the final day of the Democratic national convention and what comes next for both candidates in this presidential race. Journalist and political analyst Michael sure will help us break it down. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #209 Mike Harris Gun Owners Action League, Director of Public Policy A couple years ago, I got a call from Jim Wallace from Gun Owners Action League (GOAL). He was sending out a couple of the GOAL staff to Gun Rights Policy Conference. He asked if I would introduce them to folks. Not a problem. One of the staff was Mike Harris. He's a great guy with a lot of personality, good stories, and he's worked on Beacon Hill. Mike also joined me with the Women for Gun Rights episode, RSWC #180, last fall. There have been a lot of bad things happening in Massachusetts for gun owners. It started with the Gun Law Listening Tour from January 2023-June 2023. It was hosted by State Representative Michael Day. Day said he didn't know what the new bill was going to look like. At some point, Day met with Gabby Giffords, who is wildly anti-gun. I assume she gave him what she wanted in the bill with a hefty check for his services rendered. The bill was dropped just days after the end of the GLLT. The MA gun laws were overhauled and not in a positive way. The bill was shut down by the Bay State gun owners who called and wrote their representatives and senators. But Day was determined to get the bill through the House. It passed in October 2023. In early 2024, the MA Senate needed to write their version which was bad, but not as extreme. It was still littered with infringements. It ended up passing the MA Senate then headed to a special Conference Committee of only six people. They dropped the Bill on July 17, 2024. It was 116 pages of new restrictions on the subjects of the Commonwealth. Things like new definitions for firearms, including calling a rifle handguard a “barrel shroud”, more confusing dates for so-called assault weapon bans, adding rifles and shotguns to the approved weapons roster, and limiting possession of any semi automatic rifle or shotgun to anyone under 21 years old. The bill was signed by Governor Maura Healey (D) on July 25, 2024. It's been a mess since then. There was confusion on the start date of the law from August 1 to August 2 to October 23. Mike called me and asked if I would sign as a registered voter a form to call for a referendum on the law. And if we could film a show driving into Boston to drop the form off. We were met near the State House by Garet Holcomb, President of GOAL, Toby Leary, owner of Cape Gun Works and host of Rapid Fire Radio, and Jessica Kedziora. There were enough correctly certified signatures for the referendum to go to the Attorney General. The next steps include waiting for the AG to write the question and get it approved. Once completed and approved, there will be signature sheets that can be distributed and signed in all the counties and towns across Massachusetts. There needs to be 50,000 signatures of registered voters to get this on the ballot. This is the worst post-Bruen temper tantrum by any state since 2022. It is going to make it more difficult to get an FID/LTC in Massachusetts. It makes the training requirement more stringent and difficult. It's going to put a burden on the local police to do more for the law abiding, background check passing citizens. There are things like gun registration which is a problem. But they did not lay out how this is going to be funded or where the information is going to be held. Not that I want them to have the registration at all! The new curriculum for approved courses hasn't been developed so the state police are allowed to accept the current courses until October 23, 2024. It is bad. It is all bad. If you'd like to join or donate to GOAL, there's a link below. Favorite quotes: “We're never the aggressor, we're the ones reacting to things.” “They basically cut off half the legislative process by holding an unusual hearing.” “It was a gigantic burdensome, self-referential, piece of gun control wishlist nonsense.” “If we gather enough signatures from across all 14 counties, we will be able to repeal the bill.” Gun Owners Action League https://www.goal.org/ GOAL Gun Law Info Page https://www.goal.org/gunban GOAL 135 Referendum Page https://www.goal.org/petiition GOAL Testimony from 11/28/2023 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jK QU5NEe7gk&t=10s GOAL Join & Donate https://www.goal.org/join---donate Cape Gun Works YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@CapeGunWorks Bringing the Chap 135 Referendum to Boston https://www.youtube.com/live/6TiEmqjrj5Q?si=Wt3o5oGEb0KDS-Nu Mike, & Jason Guida with Toby Leary https://www.youtube.com/live/y3WSJK3xMW0?si=qh9-o-z2fOvIa4Kd Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. With Biden ending his re-election bid, Arizona U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly is among the names circulating as a possible running mate with Vice President Kamala Harris. Ep. 60 In Part Two with Pete Forcelli, we discuss his promotion in 2007 to ATF Deputy Assistant Director of the Phoenix Division and the series of events that led him to turn whistleblower on the scandal known as Operation Fast and Furious. Pete documents it all in his new book “The Deadly Path: How Operation Fast and Furious and Bad lawyers Armed Mexican Cartels.”It's a page turning account of his shocking discovery that ATF agents were being ordered by federal prosecutors to let illegally purchased guns cross the border into Mexico so they could be tracked. Unfortunately, the ATF lost track of more than 1400 guns that were allowed to walk, two of them used in the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in 2010 and later were feared to have been used in the assassination attempt on Gabby Giffords. When prosecutors responsible for the gun walking attempted to indict special agent turned whistleblower John Dodson, Pete stepped forward to testify before Congress. He did so at great peril to himself and his career. It took four years for him to clear his name. This is not just an ATF story, this is not just a government story. It's the story of a man who stepped forward to do the right thing, the cost of which took its toll. We also cover the Jean Baptiste Kingery grenade walking scandal. Pete and his team were able to get Kingery to confess to transporting inert grenades into Mexico to convert them into explosives. But the very same prosecutor behind Fast and Furious refused to approve Kingery's arrest. Kingery was released and returned to Mexico to continue working with the cartels. After testifying, Pete went on to hold a number of roles with ATF including as special agent in charge of the Miami Field Division during which he oversaw ATF's response to some of our country's worst mass shootings: at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport and at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. And he led the investigation into the acquisition of the firearms that were used in the Pulse Nightclub Shooting. If you missed In Part One of my conversation with Pete in Ep. 59, we covered his time with NYPD walking a foot beat in the Bronx and later becoming a homicide detective. He left NYPD after 15 years to join ATF in New York in June 2001. He was one of many who responded to Ground Zero on 9/11 and one of many diagnosed with lung cancer for which Pete has been successfully treated. We pick up in Episode Two with Pete's move to Phoenix. You can find Pete's book "The Deadly Path" on all major book retailers including Amazon. You can find Pete and get a signed copy of the book at his website. And you can find Pete on LinkedIn. Here is info on his co-author Keelin McGregor in case you're looking for someone to help you write that book.I would like to honor the work and sacrifice of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. Last night - President Biden sat down with NBC's Lester Holt, and answered a question on everyone's mind: will the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump change the election? His answer: "I don't know. And you don't know either." He's right - we don't know how last weekend's attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump will change things. But, at least for now, some corners are calling for unity and dialing back extreme rhetoric. And public calls for the incumbent president to pass the torch within the Democratic Party have quieted, as attention instead turns to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. This is not the first act of political violence that has occurred in America in recent years. To name a few: Two people died when supporters of President Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021, to disrupt the certification of the presidential election. In 2017, a gunman opened fire as Republican members of congress held a baseball practice, injuring congressman Steve Scalise. And in 2011, another member of congress, Gabby Giffords, was shot in the head while meeting with constituents in Arizona. Six people at the event were killed. Congressman Adam Smith represents Washington's 9th congressional district, which includes areas from Auburn to Bellevue and parts of Seattle. He's also a close friend of Gabby Giffords. Congressman Smith sat down with Soundside to discuss the shooting, as well as continued calls for President Biden to step down as the Democratic nominee. This episode is dedicated to the extraordinary Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her remarkable contributions to health, safety, humanity and the human spirit. Bonnie Lautenberg is an artist, photographer and writer. Her works have been featured in gallery shows, museums and art fairs throughout the country. In 2022, Lautenberg was appointed by the White House to the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts. Lautenberg is the type of artist who seamlessly communicates her seasoned life experiences through the lens of her camera and her digital canvas. Currently, she divides her time between New York and Palm Beach ‒ retaining the ties she nurtured in Washington, DC while she was the wife of the late Senator Frank Lautenberg. She has been described as “having enough Washington insider stories to fill a book.” Giffords Senior Advisor Debbie Mucarsel-Powell was the first South American-born immigrant ever elected to Congress. Debbie immigrated to the United States at the age of 14 with her mother and three sisters. When she was 24, Debbie's father was murdered, which led her to dedicate her life to advocating for commonsense gun reform. Debbie was elected to Florida's 26th Congressional District in 2018. In Congress, she focused on foreign affairs, education, healthcare policy, environmental sustainability, and gun violence prevention. She sat on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism & Homeland Security and served as Vice-Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, where she led efforts to pass the first gun safety legislation in 25 years. Debbie came to Congress with more than 20 years of experience at the FIU College of Medicine, FIU College of Health & Urban Affairs, FIU College of Social Work, Justice and Public Affairs, and Miami-Dade College, as well as experience at nonprofits providing social services, education, and environmental sustainability. Fluent in Spanish, Debbie is also available for Spanish-language media. As someone that has spent her life's work on expanding access to quality healthcare – impacting the lives of thousands, she knows that it's inconceivable that politicians in D.C. would consider ripping away healthcare access from our families. Debbie understands we must continue to improve on what's working and fix what's broken in our health care system, not abandon people who need it the most. Giffords (www.Giffords.org) is a leader in the movement to end gun violence in America. Led by the former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, the organization brings decades of political, legal, and policy expertise to the fight for gun safety. Nearly 50,000 people died from gun violence in the U.S. in 2021. This uniquely American crisis leaves no community untouched — but it doesn't have to be this way. From universal background checks to community-based violence intervention strategies, we know that there are proven solutions that will make our country safer. In statehouses and courthouses across America, we're taking on the gun lobby and winning. Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook in December 2012, the organization has helped pass more than 525 gun safety laws in nearly every state and Washington DC. Gun violence is a complex problem, and ending this epidemic will require a wide range of solutions. Giffords is committed to seeing this fight through, until the promise of a safe and just country is a reality for every person and community in America. Welcome to Flashback Friday! With 700+ episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all! This week, we are flashing back to EP686, when we brought back a couple of our favorite filmmakers Julie Cohen and Betsy West, as they discuss their latest documentary Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down . The film recently premiered on CNN, and can be found on demand on various cable channels and the CNN apps. Original Show Notes NotesIt's our fourth time speaking with a couple of our favorite documentarians (RBG, My Name is Pauli Murray, Julia) - Julie Cohen and Betsy West about they're latest film, Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down which does not disappoint. Former congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot in the face in 2011 at an in-person constituent event in a supermarket parking lot. She was severely injured and, at first, it was reported that she died from her injuries. The film Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down takes you on a journey of Gabby's life from her humble beginnings, through her incredibly painful and heartbreaking recovery (shout out to her husband, former astronaut, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly for being the ultimate caregiver!) to her fighting for stricter gun laws through her non-profit Giffords. We spoke with Julie and Betsy about this incredibly timely film and about how they were able to land (spoiler!) President Barack Obama, Gabby Giffords gift of music knowledge, a special surprise that was found in the Kelly/Giffords freezer, how important music therapy was for Gabby's recovery, and so much more. A big thank you to Julie and Betsy for loving what we do and always saying yes to having a conversation with us.
In the November 2022 edition of "five for five", the boys drink and review a bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout from Guinness, then discuss five topics in five minutes each. 1. Gabby Giffords and the courage to fight gun violence. What is the "courage" here? Who is going around threatening people who oppose gun violence? None of the things her group are advocating for require any courage at all. 2. Qatar's World Cup. Why is it in Qatar to begin with? Where are all the woke opposing Qatar's human rights? And to add insult to injury, two days before the start they reverse their position and decide not to have beer in the stadium. 3. The Paul Pelosi story. In two months we get two weird stories about Paul Pelosi, and in neither case do we get the straight story from the media. What the heck is going on? And why the tyrannical insistence that we believe the first-day version of events, which almost always turn out to be wrong? 4. Candace Owens and The Greatest Lie Ever Sold. Once again, the media isn't playing it straight with us. It's entirely possible to believe that the officer murdered George Floyd without turning Floyd into a saint. So many elements of the story have been suppressed in the interest of a BLM narrative. 5. Trump is running for president. Will he make it to the election? Will he dominate the Republican primaries? Will his legal troubles catch up with him? The boys give their opinions and make predictions.

KYRSTEN SINEMA SHOULD RESIGN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: I do not know how or why Senator Sinema of Arizona can still identify as a Democrat after appearing with Mitch McConnell at an event that was for all intents and purposes a Republican Campaign Rally for the mid-terms. Sinema praised McConnell for his "respect for the Senate" even though it was McConnell who made up a rule that denied Merrick Garland even a hearing for the Supreme Court and stole the seat for the Republicans. She blamed everybody BUT the Republicans for politics becoming "radicalized, spiraling steadily downward into bitter and tribal extremism" and never mentioned January 6th. She forecast a Democratic defeat in November. (9:53) I explain my personal relationship with Kyrsten Sinema, first as a friend, then in a brief dating relationship, then again as a friend, spanning nearly eight years, and her deterioration from as liberal and progressive a person as I've ever met to a clown who has fallen for Mitch McConnell's act. She should resign from the Senate - Arizona's governor would be required by law to name a Democratic replacement - and take her deliberate unwillingness to recognize the threat to democracy posed by the Republicans, and utilize it either to challenge Tulsi Gabbard for the role OF Tulsi Gabbard, or go host "Meet The Press." B-Block (19:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Edda in The Bahamas (20:13) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: The Meadows texts: the "Crown Jewels" of the 1/6 Investigation; Liz Truss has them invoking the 119 days of George Canning; Ken Paxton flees. (22:45) IN SPORTS: The Judge Watch Never Stops; Brett Favre suspended by SiriusXM. (24:35) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Our boy Chuck Todd, the American Senator who doesn't know how to pronounce "9/11," and the Elitist cheering for the defeat of the Elitists without realizing he IS an Elitist, vie for the honors. C-Block (31:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It actually happened: the president of NBC summoned us to his 52nd Floor office to warn us that MSNBC was about to be taken off the air by order of the Chairman of G.E. because HIS MOMMY TOLD HIM TO.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the wake of historic gun legislation – but also more tragic shootings – Peter Ambler, former Deputy Chief of Staff and Legislative Director to Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, joins host Jim Papa on this week's episode of STAFFER to discuss the organization's dedication to fighting for a safer America.
A bipartisan group of Senates say they have reached a deal on a package of safety and gun-related measures. The deal is not yet done, but lawmakers say they are closer than they've been in a long time. The package includes measures to enhance background checks for gun buyers under 21, incentivize states to pass so-called "red flag laws," and fund school safety and mental health initiatives. Is it enough? We put that question to Gabby Giffords, a former congresswoman who was injured in a 2011 shooting. Since then, Giffords has dedicated her life to calling for action on gun control, co-founding Giffords, an advocacy group that promotes gun safety. The group's executive director, Peter Ambler, also spoke to NPR. Help NPR improve podcasts by completing a short, anonymous survey at npr.org/podcastsurvey.
