4:05 Pravdepodobnosť recesie v USA a vo svete. 5:52 Prečo trhy reagujú tak prudko. 13:17 Ako vnímať poklesy na výnosoch, ak investujem. 16:15 Oplatí sa časovať trh? 20:49 Ako využiť prepady na trhoch? 22:56 Do čoho konkrétne dnes investovať? 27:07 Ako sa stavať ku kryptomenám. 30:39 Aký vývoj na trhoch čakať. – Ak máte pre nás spätnú väzbu, odkaz alebo nápad, napíšte nám na podcastindex@sme.sk – Odoberajte aj týždenný ekonomický newsletter Index na sme.sk/indexodber – Všetky podcasty denníka SME nájdete na sme.sk/podcasty – Ďakujeme, že počúvate podcast Index. Arik Shtilman, CEO of Rapyd, joined the Leaders in Payments podcast to discuss the company's growth, industry trends, and the impact of AI and crypto on fintech. Over the past two and a half years, Rapyd has shifted its strategy from rapid expansion to profitability, achieving profitability in late 2024. This shift required streamlining operations, focusing on high-margin markets, and reducing headcount growth. A significant milestone was Rapyd's $610 million acquisition of PayU, expected to finalize soon.Shtilman highlighted major macroeconomic shifts, including changing interest rates and geopolitical events, which have influenced the company's approach. He believes AI will revolutionize financial services, comparing its impact to the rise of the internet in 1998. Rapyd has already integrated AI into compliance, financial operations, and customer support, leading to faster onboarding, improved risk assessment, and reduced operational costs. AI-driven efficiencies are expected to shape the competitive landscape, favoring companies with advanced automation. On crypto, Rapyd initially stayed cautious but has now embraced stablecoins for settlements and payments, anticipating further mainstream adoption. Looking ahead, Shtilman predicts continued consolidation in fintech, AI-driven efficiencies, and an industry transformation that will reshape how financial services operate in the coming years.
The tree of life is a noisy place. From one branch come hoots and howls, from another come clicks and buzzes and whines. And coming from all over you hear the swell of song. But what is all this ruckus about? Why do so many animals communicate with sound? What kinds of meaning do these sounds convey? And—beyond the case of human speech— do any of these sounds merit the label of “language”? My guest today is Dr. Arik Kershenbaum, a zoologist at Cambridge University. Arik is an expert on vocal communication across the animal kingdom and the author of the recent book Why animals talk: The new science of animal communication. Here, Arik and I talk about why the acoustic medium is a popular choice for complex communication. We sketch a key difference between forms of communication that are purely expressive and forms that are also referential. We discuss, in turn, Arik's field research on wolves, hyraxes, and gibbons—and talk about what makes each of these animals such a revealing case study. We evaluate our prospects for quote unquote "translating" different kinds of animal communication, and we speculate about what communication systems could look like on other planets. Along the way, Arik and I touch on: noisy versus tonal sounds; short-range versus long-range communication; chorusing and duetting; simplicity and complexity; syntax and meaning; entropy; alarm calls; dolphins, orcas, and cuttlefish; and how you can tell that wolves take a certain pleasure in howling. Without further ado, here's my chat with Dr. Arik Kershenbaum. A transcript of this episode will be posted soon. Notes and links 6:30 – In the human case, of course, our most elaborated form of communication—language—comes in both spoken and signed forms. For more on the different modalities of human language, see, e.g., our earlier episode with Dr. Neil Cohn. 7:30 – The distinction between expressive and referential communication is perhaps most strongly associated with the linguist Roman Jakobson—see, for instance, this essay. For more on the question of whether animal communication systems involve reference, see this recent (philosophical) discussion. 9:00 – For a classic example of work on predator alarm calls in vervet monkeys, see here. 13:00 – For an example of Dr. Kershenbaum's work on wolf (and other canid) howls, see here. The study provides evidence for howling “dialects.” 24:30 - Examples of coyote chorusing can be heard here and here. 27:00 – A study showing that human listeners overestimate the size of a coyote group. 29:00 – For an example of Dr. Kershenbaum's work on hyrax song, see here. An example hyrax song can be heard here. 34:00 – For a primer on syntax in animal acoustic communication, see here. 40:00 – Examples of gibbon song can be heard here and here. 45:00 – For a paper on the syntax and complexity of gibbon songs, see here. 48:30 – A paper by Dr. Arik Kershenbaum and colleagues on entropy and Zipf's law in animal communication. 57:30 – A paper on Darwin's theory of “musical protolanguage” 59:30 – An example of research on orca communication. 1:00:00 – For more about Project CETI, see here. 1:07:00 – See Dr. Kershenbaum's other book, The Zoologist's Guide to the Galaxy. Dr Arik Kershenbaum is a zoologist who teaches at the University of Cambridge. His most recent book, “Why Animals Talk: The New Science of Animal Communication” addresses these questions. In this podcast Dr Arik talks about his experience of studying animal sounds in their live habitats to tell us why and what they are trying to say.
Host Dave Sobel engages in a thought-provoking conversation with Arik Solomon, CEO and co-founder of Cypago, a leading cyber governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) automation platform. The discussion delves into the challenges faced by organizations in the GRC space, particularly the reliance on manual processes despite the abundance of data available. Solomon shares his insights from his experience as CTO at Ernst & Young, where he recognized the need for technology to enhance the efficiency and sophistication of compliance services.Solomon explains that Cypago operates at the intersection of cybersecurity and GRC, aiming to streamline the alignment of security programs with business requirements and regulatory standards. The technology developed by Cypago automates the collection and analysis of data related to security controls, enabling compliance officers and security leaders to gain meaningful insights into their organizations' security posture. This automation, however, raises concerns about the potential for a "checkbox culture," where organizations may rely too heavily on automated processes without meaningful engagement from human experts. The conversation also touches on the evolving landscape of cybersecurity regulations, particularly in light of increased scrutiny from governing bodies. Solomon emphasizes the importance of establishing a baseline of minimum security standards while acknowledging the complexities of creating a universal compliance framework. He critiques existing regulations like GDPR, suggesting that a more effective approach would involve providing organizations with best practices and guidelines rather than rigid requirements that may not fit all scenarios. As the episode concludes, Solomon highlights key trends to watch in the GRC space over the next 18 months, including the need for enhanced visibility into data management and the importance of having robust governance processes in place. He underscores that organizations must prioritize understanding where their data resides and implementing necessary security measures to protect it. This insightful discussion provides valuable perspectives for cybersecurity professionals navigating the complexities of compliance in an ever-changing regulatory environment. We humans often like to think we're superior to animals, and that our ability to speak makes us extra special. While it's true that language is unique to humans, we're definitely not the only ones communicating. In fact, many animals have complex ways of talking to each other that we're only just starting to understand. This week, Adam is joined by Dr. Arik Kershenbaum, author of Why Animals Talk: The New Science of Animal Communication, to explore how animals communicate and what that reveals about our place in the natural world.
