Kymn and Anna go undercover with Civil War veteran Sarah Emma Edmonds and then recount the famed Westchester Boomerang UFO Sightings in New York's Hudson Valley.
On May 25, 1861, Emma Edmonds became Private Franklin Thompson and was mustered into Company F of the Second Michigan Regiment of Volunteer Infantry as a 3-year recruit. Fueled by love of her country and a see slavery's end, Emma, as Frank, volunteered to fight for the Union armies.
Historians estimate that hundreds of women secretly enlisted on both sides of the American Civil War - most remaining undiscovered until they were wounded, captured, or killed. This Canadian woman had her own reasons for joining the Union Army.
Sarah Emma Edmonds may be one of the greatest masters of disguise in military history, as she was able to switch from being a betrothed 17-year old girl in New Brunswick, to a 21-year old male volunteer named Frank Thompson, to a male slave and then to a female Irish peddler woman, and then back to a woman and survived to tell the tale. Sit back and listen to the latest episode “The Tombs of the Unknown Crossdressers" - a tale of women who served heroically and died in the American Civil War only to be forgotten thus becoming yet another Missing Chapter. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/themissingchapter/support

We got our first Instagram shout out this week and feel kind of famous. Don't worry, we won't let it get to our heads. We start off by talking about the 4th of July and why watching Hamilton is better than watching fireworks. The theme for this episode revolved around the holiday as we discussed our second round of good crimes. Rachel starts us off by talking about Sarah Emma Edmonds (aka Sarah/Emma), who was a real-life Mulan in the Civil War. Emma dressed up as a man to fight in the Union army, where she served as a mail carrier and spy. Nathalie then discusses the case of Elizabeth Freeman, the first African woman to file and win a freedom suit in Massachusetts. Elizabeth risked everything to be the "test case" to determine if slavery was illegal under the new Massachusetts constitution. She remained strong despite the risk of possible imprisonment and further mistreatment if she were to lose. On this particularly tipsy episode (brought to you by a bottle of Ame Du Vin Rose) the ladies are doing some extra credit and covering 3, count them, 3 women! Kelley covers two military women who felt the call to serve, even when no one asked (or wanted them) them to. First, Mariya Oktyabrskaya, who bought her own fucking tank to go fight the Nazis and avenge her fallen husband. Next, Sarah Emma Edmonds, who traveled all the way from Canada and dressed as a man to fight for the Union in the American Civil War! Finally, Emily tells the story of Isabella Goodwin and how he brought down a gangster with a hilarious nickname to become New York's first female police detective! Top off your glass, grab some Sour Patch Kids, and settle in because herstory is about to get tipsy! ** Mornings with u by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeenMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/winingaboutherstory/overview)

July 1861. A wounded Union soldier and spy defects from the Army rather than be discovered as a woman posing as a man.
Franklin Thompson did it all as a Civil War soldier: spied, rode, nursed, and fought. And during his service, almost no one knew his secret: that he was really Sarah Emma Edmonds in disguise. Emma left home in Canada at 17 to escape a life she didn't want, living as a man so she could make her own way in the world. When the American Civil War came, she felt called to join up and fight for the Union. She had many adventures as a soldier and spy, then went on to write a best-selling book about it all. Twenty years later, she fought another kind of battle: one for a soldier's pension, becoming one of the first women to be granted one. Let's explore the life and adventurous times of this fascinating unsung hero.
In this episode, the ladies rave about the new season of Insecure on HBO, marvel at the heroics of Civil War spy and soldier, Sarah Emma Edmonds and wag their tongues at the "mean girl" antics of legendary gossip columnist, Hedda Hopper.
Allan Newell returns once again to discuss Sarah Emma Edmonds, Klaus Fuchs, the Rosenbergs, honeypots, and the acoustic kitty. Also a pop quiz on spy terminology plus pop culture! Music: "Shhh, It's a Military Secret" by Glenn Miller Images
Though she was Canadian, Sarah Emma Edmonds fought for the Union during the Civil War. She adopted the name Franklin Thompson while traveling. Disguised as a man, she enlisted and began a career as a nurse, courier and spy (if you believe her memoir). Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
