ABOUT THE EPISODE:This week's episode is a Summer Replay from 2025.There is a version of August that has been living in your head since they were small. The car packed to the roof. The drive. Target for the bedding, the sweatshirt, the bumper sticker, the parent barbecue where everybody's kid looks fine. Except it is three weeks out and you are not picturing it anymore. You are watching them.Cathy and I both know what it costs to send them anyway. The tuition is paid. The housing is paid. Somebody in the family belongs to that fraternity. And underneath all of it sits the thing almost nobody says out loud, which is that you are tired, and you need your house to be quiet again. We understand that. We have both wanted the break badly enough to talk ourselves past our own gut.Cathy's son told her two weeks before he left that he did not think he wanted to go. They chalked it up to nerves. He was right, and what followed was not one crisis. It was months of them, and eventually two of her kids were struggling under the same roof at the same time.So we get into what we would each do differently now. The paperwork almost no parent thinks about until they are standing in a hospital hallway being told nothing. What is already sitting on that campus that you could call and ask about before move-in day. Why deferring a year is not the punishment it feels like. And the grief, which is real, of a fall you do not get to have.If your kid is leaving in a few weeks and something in you has not settled, listen before you load the car.YOU'LL LEARNWhat Cathy's son said two weeks before move-in, and what she and her husband decided it meantThe document most parents never think about until a hospital will not tell them anythingWhat is already available on most campuses that almost nobody calls to ask forWhy the money you think is locked in probably is notWhat Cathy and I both got instead of the college experience we wantedEPISODE RESOURCES:Success is Subjective podcastTreatment locator - AllKindsOfTherapy.com Assoc. In Episode 232, Sarah is joined by returning guest Anderson McKean of Page & Palette Bookstore for the 2026 edition of Micro Genres! Each year, this series gives us a chance to niche down even further into the kinds of books we love — spotlighting those very specific sub-sub-genres that capture a particular reading taste. This year, Sarah and Anderson have 10 all-new Micro Genres to share, along with standout books for each. With more than 80 books mentioned, you're bound to find a few new additions to your TBR — and maybe recognize a Micro Genre or two of your own. August 19, 2026: I look at new research showing that most workers would reject a promotion if it meant sacrificing their work-life boundaries, and why the traditional management promotion may no longer feel worth the cost. Then I break down reporting that Anthropic out-earned OpenAI in the second quarter. Finally, I get into the surge in boomerang employees, who now account for 35% of new hires, and why companies are increasingly bringing former workers back.

Air Date: 8/16/2026 Today we look at what Toni Morrison called "sanctioned ignorance," the deliberate manufacture of a version of the past that keeps citizens from connecting the dots between what their government did then and what it's doing now. They're doing it by attacking museums, libraries, and everyone dedicated to ensuring that people have access to accurate information because that's what it takes to implement authoritarian control over a society. It's also the reason that countries under authoritarian rule suffer from the lack of benefits that comes with the free exchange of ideas. Full Show Notes Transcript Be part of the show! Last spring, President Donald Trump issued the “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History” executive order, taking aim at federal parks, monuments, museums, and sites that have cast the United States's “founding principles and historical milestones in a negative light.” On the Fourth of July this year, the White House published its 162-page “Saving America's Story,” attacking the Smithsonian Institution directly for “anti-white activism,” “illegal alien activism,” “transgender activism,” and more broadly for adopting “an ideological framework that no longer treats the American story as a shared national inheritance to be taught or celebrated, but as a political instrument to divide, dispirit, and discourage our citizens.”“We're in this moment where we are fighting over how America tells its past,” journalist Rebecca Nagle tells The Intercept Briefing. “It can be scary in a moment when it feels like the stakes are really high to really interrogate the myths that we all carry, that we all hold about who our country is and where it started because it's really tempting to want to think, 'OK, if we just wind the clock back 10 years, if we just go back a few election cycles, we'll be back to a democracy that's strong, that's stable, that's solid, and we'll all be fine.' It's much more scary to say, ‘Oh, actually, if we want to talk about where authoritarianism comes from in the United States, it's actually at the foundation.'”As the United States celebrates its 250th birthday this year, the Trump administration has been ramping up its efforts to erase not just the dark parts of U.S. history but also the contributions of basically anyone who isn't a white, Christian man. That project has included taking concrete steps to remove all traces of the history of people who don't fit that description, Black people, immigrants, civil rights advocates, women and gay and trans people — including the first people to live on this land: Native Americans. This week on the podcast, Nagle speaks to host Akela Lacy about her new podcast series “First America,” which examines how Native people have been largely written out of the American story, and how that story informs the current political crisis in the U.S.“One of the big claims that the series makes is that the foundation is in itself is a myth. Because at the same time that our founders were building a democracy, they were also building an empire. The way that you govern an empire, the way that you govern other people by force, is not democratic,” says Nagle, a citizen of Cherokee Nation. “This identity crisis we're having around authoritarianism and democracy, and how could authoritarianism be sneaking into our democracy — what we argue is that it's actually always been there.”“A lot of what is happening now — it's not new, it's not un-American, it's not unprecedented. Sometimes it's not even unconstitutional! It's actually just taking these parts of our government that for a long time most Americans didn't know was there or didn't really think about, and Trump is just pulling it into the center,” says Nagle. Welcome to a packed double-feature appetizer of The Straight Dope Show (Episodes 362 & 363), where hosts El Uno and TraB the Wonder deliver raw, unfiltered perspectives on hip-hop royalty, media representation, and the illusion of the entertainment industry. The guys kick off with a deep dive into the fallout of the Drake vs. Kendrick beef, breaking down why the industry flipped on "the King" as soon as blood was in the water and examining the hidden cost of the infamous Drake stimulus package. The conversation hits a heavy philosophical note as they tackle why society constantly tells Black creators to remain humble, contrasting it with global excellence and the struggle for true potential.Later, they pull back the curtain on Hollywood and streaming networks, detailing how corporations use Black trauma content and legacy representation (Spawn, Blade, and Static Shock) to drive engagement when numbers are low. From analyzing Tyler Perry's cinematic commerce model to laughing about hood classics, nothing is off-limits. Finally, they weigh in on the massive controversy surrounding Lil Wayne's Super Bowl snub in New Orleans, evaluate Taylor Swift's powerful stance against AI and political rallies, and call out the ridiculous fan outrage over Caitlin Clark simply liking a post telling people to vote.Experience the culture raw and unfiltered! Download the Rock Da Crowd TV app on your mobile device today to take The Straight Dope Show everywhere you go—on the plane, on the bus, or right in your ear pod when you should be paying attention.00:00:07 – The Drake vs. Kendrick fallout: Why the kingdom turned on the King and the reality of the OVO sound theft.00:04:24 – The trap of being humble: Rejecting deference, celebrating greatness, and striving for your true potential.00:07:04 – Tyreek Hill's police detainment and the immediate media script.00:07:52 – The Netflix play: Relying on Black content (The Deliverance, Tyler Perry films) to boost struggling streaming numbers.00:11:13 – The evolution of Black superhero representation: From Spawn and Blade to DC fumbling Static Shock.00:13:42 – Art vs. Commerce: Defending Tyler Perry's business model, Alex Cross, and why people watch content they claim to hate just to tweet about it.00:17:51 – Hood classics vs. Black success films: Remembering Boyz n the Hood, Boomerang, and Mo' Money.00:20:36 – Super Bowl halftime show theories: Did Kendrick and Drake have a sit-down before the beef?.00:22:28 – The Lil Wayne Super Bowl snub: A critical look at his global discography, his legendary mixtape run, and OVO taking over Young Money.00:29:44 – Industry puppets: Stephen A. Salmos 119:73“Tus manos me hicieron y me formaron; hazme entender y aprenderé tus mandamientos”.Para muchos la diversión del boomerang radica en el hecho de que parece ir contra el sentido común. Send us Fan MailWatch the video on YouTube.Your inbox is probably holding a handful of conversations that didn't end. They just stopped. A great call, real interest, maybe even a proposal sent, and then… silence. That quiet can feel oddly personal, which is exactly why so many consultants avoid following up until it's painfully awkward. We don't do “just checking in” here. We walk through five specific, field-tested follow-up scripts designed to restart stalled sales conversations without sounding pushy, needy, or robotic. We break down when to use each approach based on what's most likely happening on the other side: a proposal sitting in limbo, a pre-decision thread that evaporated, shifting priorities inside a company, hesitation rooted in trust, or a lead that's been ghosting for months. You'll hear how to remove pressure while still being direct, how to add value to re-enter a thread naturally, how to ask about timeline changes in a way that invites honesty, and how to use social proof to make outcomes feel real. Then we share the “direct closeout” message that gets you out of purgatory and into a clean yes or no.We also cover practical pipeline habits that make follow-up easier: keeping messages to three sentences or less, spacing your follow-ups with a simple cadence, using tools like Boomerang for Gmail so nothing slips, and writing subject lines you can actually search later. If you're a B2B solo consultant or fractional executive building a reliable sales pipeline, these are the moves that turn old threads into new revenue. Matt Trakker's introduction is fascinating because he's being hunted by the military, yet it quickly becomes clear he wants to be captured. Why was that the right way to introduce him, and what does it reveal about who he is in this version of M.A.S.K.? Miles Mayhem comes across as both calculating and completely unhinged. His fear of Transformers and extraterrestrial threats gives him a very different motivation than a typical villain. What interested you about making him someone who might see himself as humanity's last line of defense? One of the most exciting ideas in M.A.S.K. has always been vehicles transforming into weapons and armor systems. Pye, what was the challenge of updating those iconic transformations for modern audiences while still capturing the toyetic fun fans expect? Dan, after writing Destro, what was appealing about tackling another corner of the Energon Universe? Did your experience with Destro help shape how you approached M.A.S.K., or did you want this book to have a completely different flavor? The first issue hints at a larger arms race involving technology and weapons that may not even originate on Earth. How much of M.A.S.K. is a spy thriller versus a science-fiction story, and where does it fit tonally alongside Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals? Bruce Sato and Gloria Baker are positioned as key new recruits. What qualities do they bring to M.A.S.K. that complement or challenge Matt Trakker's leadership style? The original M.A.S.K. comic debuted in 1987 and had a very different view of global threats and military organizations. Were there any specific elements from that era that you deliberately updated to reflect modern anxieties and geopolitics? Fun question: If you could each claim one M.A.S.K. vehicle and mask from the entire franchise to use in real life for a week, which would you pick and what completely irresponsible thing would you do with it?

Reid. Rising to prominence as the dynamic drummer for the hitmaking 1980s R&B band The Deal, Reid seamlessly transitioned from the stage to the boardroom, cementing his status as a visionary producer, iconic songwriter, and major label force. Throughout his illustrious career, his taste and leadership guided the culture as the co-founder of LaFace Records, and later as the chairman and CEO of some of the most powerful major labels in music history, including Arista, Island Def Jam, and Epic Records. Bringing his journey full-circle, he continues to nurture the next generation of musical innovators through Mega, his powerful label venture launched in partnership with global superstar Usher. Joining hosts Philionaire, Claude Kelly and Chuck Harmony of Louis York, and Tamone Bacon, Reid engages in an open, free-flowing conversation about what it takes to shape the sound of a generation. Right from the jump, the chemistry is electric as Reid jokingly auditions to become the podcast's official fifth cast member, setting a warm and celebratory tone for an episode dedicated to giving an industry hero his well-deserved flowers. This first installment dives straight into the mind of a musical architect, exploring Reid's eclectic taste in music and his enduring philosophy on talent. The hosts cue up special video questions from fans, prompting Reid to share his candid thoughts on everything from his dream biopic casting to how he embraces AI as the next evolutionary tool for creatives and drawing a fascinating parallel to his own early days mastering the drum machine in the 1980s. He also pulls back the curtain on his legendary ability to spot undeniable star power, describing how true icons "move the air" the moment they step into a room. As the conversation unfolds, listeners are treated to an inside look at the history-making partnerships that defined an era. Reid reflects on his early days with Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds in The Deal, surviving on "pride and being broke" while studying the mastery of Prince and Luther Vandross. The episode highlights the magical intuition behind some of his biggest triumphs, including the unorthodox breaking of Toni Braxton via the Boomerang soundtrack. Grounded in a deep, mutual respect for the craft, this first part captures the essence of a man who never let boxes define him, cementing a legacy built entirely on an uncompromising love for music. Alpha Warrior and Josh Reid have a very good Tuesday. Thomas Massie just lost his primary to a Trump endorsed candidate, Bill Cassidy went down the day before, and Trump just yanked his Cornyn endorsement in Texas and pinned it on Ken Paxton, which sent John Thune into a televised meltdown. The duo argues this is the establishment quietly getting hauled out before November, and the so called America first dissenters are the visible piece of a much bigger infiltration operation. Alpha then drops the receipt he has been sitting on for twenty six hours. A whistleblower contacted him alleging an October 2024 dinner meeting in the Hamilton County Ohio area, an attorney connected to a very famous homicide trial, and a roster of influencers many of you interact with daily on X. He reads the post verbatim for legal reasons. From there the guys explain why Massie conceded without crying fraud, why the Save America Act is supposed to fail, and why August is the likely window for a national emergency on election integrity. Plus Harmeet Dhillon's voter roll lawsuit against twenty nine states, Joe DiGenova's Fort Pierce team for the Brennan grand jury, Alpha's $1,776,000,000 prediction coming true, and the six story military command center quietly being built under the East Wing.

The Democrat Party, which brags that it doesn't let democracy die in darkness, has a bad habit of culling candidates it feels are politically antithetical to its agenda. Take Eric Swalwell, for example. Swalwell joined an already crowded field for California governor in November 2025.  He threatened to break up the Democrat field, as there are more viable Democrat candidates than Republicans. Make no mistake: Had Swalwell been enjoying a healthy lead in the polls going into last Friday, he'd still be running for governor, and these allegations would've never seen the light of day. Like Joe Biden's failed reelection bid in 2024, the Democrat establishment made the strategic decision to no longer cloak Swalwell's sex harassment allegations and instead threw its weight behind a more viable candidate. “But my point is, if Eric Swalwell had been way ahead in the gubernatorial race, I don't think that any of this would've surfaced. It would've been analogous to Joe Biden. He would've been a useful vessel, and he would've won the governorship, and the Republicans wouldn't have had a chance.” (00:00) California Jungle Primary (00:47) Who Is Eric Swalwell (03:00) Swalwell Scandal Allegations (04:31) Why It Surfaced Now (07:32) Democrats and Backroom Politics
