It remains quite remarkable the number of gadgets and gizmos that any automobile or truck comes standardly equipped with in the year 2025. I can get an aerial, 360-degree view of my surroundings to make sure I am safely backing out of my garage. I can type-in GPS coordinates for a vacation destination and know, to the minute, when my family and I will arrive safely to where we're going. All of the modern amenities that you could possibly wish for, but, still, an unexpected invention from the turn of the 20th-century remains to be one of the most crucial to safe and stress-free drive than any of these.Go to The Missing Chapter Podcast website for more information, previous episodes, and professional development opportunities!

The Missing Chapter is taking you out to the ballgame! Now, this isn't the first time that we've delved into the baseball diamond or the vast list of characters who help make up it's colorful, storied past, but today's episode is different and sure to surprise even the most avid of baseball fans: August 24th, 1919 and the crowd roars as Cleveland pitcher, Ray Caldwell and his teammates, take the field at League Park. Caldwell is on the mound, and the cheers only get louder because Cleveland fans know what's at stake for the right-hander: He has just been waived by the Red Sox, and the pulse of his once-promising career had all but flatlined prior to that day. This is his last gasp and early on… it's apparent he's got his best stuff working. But as the clouds began to roll in off of Lake Erie and the skies darkened and the winds stiffened, no one, especially Caldwell, could have predicted what happened next… more accurately, what struck next, and how it would affect his career and his life. An especially “shocking” story and what you've come to know and love from the Missing Chapter Podcast. “Play Ball!”Go to The Missing Chapter Podcast website for more information, previous episodes, and professional development opportunities!

Ok Missing Chapter fans, how many of you enjoy participating in and watching sports?  If you're a sports fan, like the Phils here, then you can sit down at the end of a work day and decompress by watching your favorite team, or watch a random game with a random team just because of the entertainment value.  What is it that draws us in?  How is it that I can watch the OIympics till the middle of the night without blinking an eyelash, with a sport that I've never heard of before?  I think it's because as former athletes, we appreciate and are amazed at the time, dedication, and practicing profound skill sets that athletes of all shapes and sizes are willing to put their bodies through in order to pursue perfection.  It's unbelievable what the human body is capable of if we're willing to be disciplined and endure the painful grind of practicing a skill day in and day out.  And that's the idea for today's episode.  Someone who history has already forgotten, but someone who, by doing daily activities by trade, became one of the most elite athletes and in one of the most obscure ways, became legendary.  Well we haven't forgotten him, and oh, we haven't forgotten our coffee either.  So turn up the volumes, get a couple more reps on your treadmills, and try to keep up with today's Missing Chapter Profile.Go to The Missing Chapter Podcast website for more information, previous episodes, and professional development opportunities!

His life is remarkable enough to be considered for an episode of the Missing Chapter Podcast. His innate ability to cheat death can only be rivaled by a figure in history like a Gregory Rasputin. As a child, it's reported, that he survived a fall of some three-stories, he drank acidic water that he mistook for milk, swallowed a rather large needle, was hit on the head by a large stone, suffered severe burns from a gunpowder explosion, fell into a river and nearly drowned, and, yes, went on to invent one of the most significant, popular musical instruments the world has ever seen…. Phew. Oh, and we haven't even gotten to his invention that changed the world's culture like no one could have predicted!Quite the list and quite the life on the podcast you've come to expect these incredible stories from. Famous author CS Lewis coined a phrase that really speaks volumes about our own society and culture, chronological snobbery - Lewis defines this chronological snobbery as “the uncritical acceptance of the intellectual climate of our own age and the assumption that whatever has gone out of date is on that count discredited. In other words, we think we're the best generation and our technology and lifestyles are far superior to those that came before us.  Ask any adolescent who listens to their parents or teachers try to keep up with the lingo these days and laughter will ensue - why?  Because deep down, they're suffering from chronological snobbery.  And don't think they're the only one, we've all done it!  And that certainly applies to how we view history.  We look at some of the cultures that came before us and laugh - until we find something that challenges that thought - something that tells us that we're not superior at all to those that came before us, as if our new, modern technology somehow makes us better.  Well, a fairly recent discovery is challenging just that.  I hope I don't mess with our egos too much today, you might want to get a second, or third cup of coffee.  Welcome to the Missing Chapter, everyone, let's get to it. If you're anything like us, the miracle of flight is something that has always dazzled us.  We still see the awe in watching planes take off and land, and being on a plane continues to thrill no matter how mainstream and normal commercial flights have become.  There's something so fascinating about it that it's hard to describe.  What's truly unbelievable is how far we've come in such a short amount of time.  We've only had a little over a century's worth of flying experience and look how capable, safe, and almost physics-defying our common plane has truly become.  And to think it all started with two brothers who shared the same fascination with flight as us.  And that fascination, which led to obsession, is the focus of today's episode.   So pour yourself a cup of coffee, put your tray tables in their upright and locked position, and prepare for takeoff as your captains, Phil and Phil, bring you into the unknowns of the Wright brothers on this episode of the Missing Chapter. With so many indigenous nations pushed to America's frontier in the 19th century, they usually appear in popular culture as populates of the rural West, occupying wide open spaces brimming with tipis, buffalo and pow wows. Yet the Mohawk Nation has deep roots in metropolitan New York City—where, beginning in the early 20th century, Mohawk, ironworkers contributed to building many of the iconic skyscrapers that dominate the Manhattan skyline today.   These “Skywalkers” have for generations traveled far and wide to work on the “high steel,” bringing back good wages to support their homes and building reputations as fearless laborers in the process. In the early 1950's juvenile delinquency was on the rise.  Pop icons from rock and roll and Hollywood like Elvis Presley and James Dean seemed to encourage children and teenagers to rebel against their parents.  What else was causing this rash of bad behavior across the country?  What menace was the real reason behind the increased criminal behavior of teenagers?  What was so bad that psychologists conducted research and published books claiming to know what the biggest threat to our society was?  A threat so serious, that a senate subcommittee held hearings in the creative center of where this scourge of our society was centered.  For three days in the Spring and Summer of 1954 the threat was studied, and analyzed and questioned.  The biggest danger to the youth of America was……comic books.  Who was able to solve this problem?  Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, its… well, it wasn't Superman who saved the day.  Find out who on the next episode of, The Missing Chapter. Oh the portmanteau.  We've mentioned this a lot in our episodes lately, unintentionally.  If you aren't familiar with what a portmanteau is, let me explain.  The word podcast is a portmanteau because it's a combination of 2 words…ipod and broadcast…podcast.  To use a term we used a couple episodes ago, velcro is a portmanteau for velvet and crochet.  Make sense?  Sure it does!  Well, on today's episode of the Missing Chapter, we talk about a summer treat that kids and adults alike enjoy almost every day in the summer, and like me, maybe never even knew that it was a portmanteau.  And now that I rhymed unintentionally, and unintentionally said the word portmanteau a record-breaking 6 times in a few short sentences, let's put redundancy aside, pour ourselves a hot cup of coffee, or maybe iced at this point in the year, and get into a summer-filled episode of the Missing Chapter. Today we're going to take a look at the explosive legacy of an individual that we're all familiar with - or at least familiar with his creations. The enigmatic figure that we are about to explore is an inventor, philanthropist, ruthless industrialist, and also a major representative of peace in the contemporary age.  This man's most significant invention, dynamite, revolutionized the world at its creation, allowing for efficient construction, quickened the development of transportation systems, and enabled the process of mining in much greater volume;  however, it also drastically changed military strategies, showing the World the extensive possibilities for destruction that exist.  Following this invention, his rise to wealth and power was incredible; however, a moral conundrum nagged at our figure as the feeling of responsibility ate away at him until he decided to make the change from merchant of death to an advocate of peace, with the creation of, spoiler alert, the Nobel Peace Prize.  Today's podcast - we're going to take a look at Alfred Nobel. We're going to explore his life, the things that influenced him and the compelling story of how the Nobel Peace Prize came to be - so strap in for this Missing Chapter profile!
