The Jack Carr Book Club April 2025 selection is THE UNVANQUISHED by bestselling author Patrick K. O'Donnell.THE UNVANQUISHED pulls back the curtain on a little-known shadow war that raged alongside the Civil War's better-known battles. At its center: Lincoln's special forces, the Jessie Scouts—Union soldiers who disguised themselves in Confederate uniforms to carry out daring raids, intelligence gathering, and high-risk missions behind enemy lines.Through vivid storytelling and never-before-published firsthand accounts, O'Donnell shines a light on the Scouts' deadly cat-and-mouse game with Mosby's Rangers, uncovering espionage operations, plots to kidnap Abraham Lincoln, and a postwar proxy fight in Mexico. Patrick K. O'Donnell is a combat historian, public speaker, and the bestselling author of 13 critically acclaimed books spanning from the American Revolution to Iraq. He is a leading authority on special operations and irregular warfare, having embedded with troops in Fallujah and advised on projects like BAND OF BROTHERS and MEDAL OF HONOR. Worum geht's? We started off Punch a N*zi month by taking on Mecha Hitler and now we are continuing the series with some resistance. I'm joined by Dave Pietrangelo from the Remember 64 podcast to talk about the second installment in the Medal of Honor series, Medal of Honor: Underground. This game approached WW2 from a different direction than the first game. Instead of an American soldier you play as Manon Batiste, a french resistance fighter. Dave and I break down Manon's journey as she avenges her brothers death and helps liberate her home country. This game means a lot to me and it means even more now. If you have not played this game I highly recommend it. What do you do when you're willing to serve, but unwilling to kill? How do you reconcile two fundamental beliefs that stand in opposition to each other? Like many conscientious objectors who served in Vietnam, Gary Kulik tried to save lives.
Willy sat down with Chris Cassidy to discuss his extraordinary journey from highly decorated U.S. Navy SEAL to NASA's Chief Astronaut, and now President and CEO of the National Medal of Honor Museum. They explored what it means to overcome fear—on the battlefield and in space—the power of quiet, humble leadership, what it's really like to live in orbit (including two-hour daily workouts!), how he carved out opportunities throughout his career, and much more. We are celebrating the day by thinking back on some of the incredible heroes we covered in our last season. We will continue to tell those stories in our second season coming up in May. AP correspondent Donna Warder reports on a new museum that tells the stories of Medal of Honor recipients.
According to The Guardian, Army Maj. Gen. Charles C. Rogers, the highest-ranking Black servicemember to receive the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the Vietnam War, was briefly removed from the Department of Defense's website, sparking backlash. The deletion occurred amid the Trump administration's efforts to eliminate references to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Following public outcry, the page was later restored. Rogers' Medal of Honor citation commended his “heroism” during a 1968 battle. He retired in 1984 and passed away in 1990. The controversy surrounding his profile's removal underscores broader concerns about the erasure of Black military history from government records. Learn more about your ad choices. On August 8th, 2012, as CPT Florent Groberg was escorting coalition and Afghan personnel to a compound in Asadabad, Afghanistan, he spotted a man approaching who was wearing a suicide vest. Acting quickly, Groberg managed to push the attacker away from the group, but the vest still exploded, killing four people and seriously injuring Groberg. More would have perished, though, if it hadn't been for the Captain's actions, which led to him receiving the prestigious Medal of Honor. Hosts LTG (Ret.) Leslie C. Smith and SMA (Ret.) Groberg to discuss how Groberg's childhood in France shaped the person he became, how his recovery from the attack taught him many lessons, and also what it's like being a comic book character. After three years of construction – and decades of dreams – the National Medal of Honor Museum will open its doors this month. In their actions on the battlefield and beyond, Medal of Honor Recipients embody the values intrinsic to the Medal: citizenship and patriotism, commitment and integrity, courage and sacrifice. And while the Museum will explore all of these values, each of us relates to the values in a unique way. Recently, we asked Medal of Honor Recipients and their family members which of the six values resonates with them the most. Tickets to visit the National Medal of Honor Museum are now available for purchase on the Museum's website ahead of the doors opening to the public on March 25, 2025. The Museum has more than 100,000 square feet of space, including 31,000 square feet dedicated to Exhibition Galleries telling the history of the Medal of Honor and the stories of the American heroes who earned it. More information to help guests plan their visit is available at mohmuseum.org.
The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. It is presented to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have displayed extraordinary bravery and valor in combat, often at great personal risk and beyond the call of duty. The Medal of Honor has a rich history dating back to the American Civil War and has undergone various changes in its design, criteria, and awarding process. The Ultimate Sacrifice: Honoring Corporal Jason Dunham's Legacy In this week's Team Never Quit Podcast, we learn the vivid details of the events leading up to the courage, love, and self-sacrifice made by Medal of Honor recipient, Corporal Jason L. Dunham of Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines in Karabilah, Iraq. What a leader by example Jason was - to the point of throwing himself onto a grenade in an effort to save his comrades. Marcus' guests, David Kniess (Veteran & Producer) and Lieutenant Colonel Trent Gibson (Dunham's Company Commander), not only bring Jason's story to life, but discuss the compelling and engaging upcoming documentary - The Gift. The Gift documentary is a personal project for David, who had a chance meeting with Corporal Dunham. That chance meeting led to lifelong friendships with the Dunham family and a core group of Marines from Kilo Company. David is actively involved in the Veteran community and has volunteered his time, producing content for Veteran Organizations such as Beteran, Stop Soldier Suicide, John Preston Music, and The Boot Campaign. David also served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Normandy (CG-60), a guided missile cruiser. In this episode you will hear: • Having the Dunham's in my life has enriched my life. (10:52) • It's not just about Jason; it's about everything that has affected all of you all those years. (15:46) • Our generation and the younger generation is standing up and saying, “I'm not gonna wait for anyone. I'm gonna jump out there and teach guys how to surf, how to sing with dogs, start a podcast, and we're talking about our shit. (22:44) • [With regard to this film], all I care about is what Marines, Sailors, Airmen and Soldiers think. For veterans who are still struggling, I want them to watch it and say “if these kid can do it, maybe I can do it too.” (26:44) • I want civilians to know what it's like for young men & women to go to war. (27:23) • [Marcus] If somebody threw one of those “Thank you for service” lines at you – even if you haven't done something – it's coming…” (28:04) • I believe in 3 things as a Marine. I believe in leadership by example; I believe in self-sacrifice for the greater good; and one man can make a difference. (33:06) • Jason had the leadership qualities to lead a rifle squad of American sons. (37:39) • Any leader who inspires his subordinates through personal example, to then return the favor and take care of him – that's a true leader. (47:06) • Dunham was a big boy. He's not someone I would choose to grapple with. (54:38) • Jason took off his Kevlar helmet, placed in on the grenade, and then laid down on it. (64:41) • Knowing what I know of him now, he loved his marines so much. He didn't just take care of them, he practiced taking care of them. Who fucking practices covering a live grenade with their helmet? There are 125 WWI recipients of the Medal of Honor. One of those recipients was Private Thomas Croft Neibaur of the 167th Infantry Regiment, 42nd “Rainbow” Division who received the award for heroism at the Cote de Chatillon in 1918. Neibaur was the first Mormon and the first soldier from Idaho to receive the Medal of Honor. His actions led General John J. Pershing to name him amongst the “Immortal Ten” of World War I, and yet, in a tragic turn of events, in 1939 Neibaur returned his Medal of Honor. To discuss Neibaur's WWI service and life, the World War I Podcast hosted Sherman Fleek, author of Place the Headstones Where They Belong: Thomas Neibaur, WWI Soldier. The start of the new year is a time to reflect on ways we can improve. As infallible as they may seem, Medal of Honor Recipients are no different. Looking back on their lives, there's some changes they would have liked to make. Recently, we asked a few Recipients to share the advice they would give to their younger selves. The wisdom they shared about modesty, discipline, gratefulness, and more is applicable at all stages of life. Have you ever stopped to think about the transformative power of technology on our daily lives and the extraordinary minds behind these innovations? In this episode, I sit down with Thomas M. Coughlin, President of IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization, to explore a remarkable announcement that underscores the profound impact of technology on society: the IEEE Medal of Honor monetary prize is being increased to an astounding $2 million starting in 2025. Thomas shares insights into why IEEE has elevated this award to such a prestigious level, placing it among the world's largest monetary prizes. We discuss the 100-plus-year history of the IEEE Medal of Honor and its role in celebrating the pioneers behind revolutionary innovations like the Internet, life-saving medical technologies such as CAT scans, MRIs, and pacemakers, and the development of transistors and semiconductors that form the backbone of modern electronics. Beyond the award itself, Thomas provides a fascinating look into IEEE's global efforts, powered by 460,000 members across 190 countries. From addressing society's most pressing issues to fostering ethical development in emerging technologies like AI, IEEE is advancing technology for humanity in ways that ripple across industries and communities worldwide. We also delve into the rigorous criteria for the IEEE Medal of Honor and how it celebrates not just innovation, but the profound societal and professional impacts of technological breakthroughs. With the next Medal of Honor recipient set to be announced in February 2025, this conversation offers a timely glimpse into how IEEE is shaping the future of technology and honoring the legacy of those who have driven human progress. What do you think about the growing recognition of the role technology plays in solving global challenges? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Share your ideas and join the conversation!
