Charlie Brooker is one of the most influential satirists working today. Having started out as a cartoonist, his razor sharp writing on culture and the media made his TV columns for The Guardian, begun in 2000, essential reading for many. It wasn't long until his acerbic and frequently absurd world view found a home on BBC Four in the form of the TV review show, Screenwipe. He's also behind acclaimed comedies like Nathan Barley. But he's found global fame with the series Black Mirror, which has entered the lexicon for a singular form of technology-enhanced dread. In the week that the new season launches, Charlie Brooker joins The Media Show to look back at his career. Presenter: Katie Razzall Producer: Simon Richardson

Welcome back to yet another episode of the Tech for Good Live podcast. If you listen carefully, you might just hear the sound of sleigh bells ringing. Why? Because it’s the Christmas episode of the podcast! Right now, across the world, parents carry out their most treasured Christmas tradition: sterilising the chimney and immediate areas around the Christmas tree. Remember, Santa is very, very old, and quite overweight so he’s in a high risk category. Protect him please. Keep your filthy diseased hands away from him. The Tech for Good Live team has grown over the last year, so there’s about a thousand of us on this podcast, and we’re going to look back to some of the highlights and low-lights of the last year. Think of it like Charlie Brooker’s Screenwipe, but without the talent or audience. Joining host Bex  on this festive treat: Greg Ashton Jonny Rae-Evans Hera Hussain Ben White Fay Schofield Harry Bailey  Ankur Asthana & Marium Navid, Members of the team behind the creation of the Hold the Line Guide ---------------------------- Thanks for listening and see you in 2021! What did you think? We’d love to hear your thoughts.  Get in touch on twitter @techforgoodlive or Email at hello@techforgood.live  We’d love it if you gave us a nice iTunes review and told your pals about this podcast! "Imposter syndrome? Absolutely. How you deal with that is by being graceful and empathic and supportive, and not protecting. Owning up when you don't know something? So majorly important. You don't have to know everything." Fiona McDermott 2020This is a very special episode recorded live on stage at the APA future of advertising conference earlier this year - and features the fantastic Fiona McDermott. For those who don’t know, Fiona she is Channel 4’s head of comedy. After joining Channel 4 in 2011 as Commissioning Editor she has worked across some amazing award-winning shows such a Derry Girls, Catastrophe, The Windors and Home, just to name a few. And before that she was a Producer at Zeppotron, working on shows such 8 out of 10 Cats, Would I Lie To You and Screenwipe.During our conversation, we speak about Fiona’s introduction to the world of TV and the different roles she has had along the way. We also talk about what it was like working with some of the best comedians in the UK including Jimmy Carr, Franky Boyle, Charlie Brooker and Sean Pye. And of course, how she became the Head of Comedy and the day to day work that entails. She talks openly about often feeling like she has a lot to prove and how the all too familiar imposter syndrome often rears its ugly head. We also talk about the amount of responsibility she has to face on a daily basis, such as having to work out and evolve Channel 4’s comedy taste and the difficult job of knowing when to turn down new scripts and formats – with the all-important question – has she ever turned down a show that goes on to be a smash hit!P.S. She also gives an insight into the best way to pitch your idea to Channel 4 but keep it to yourself... ;)

Charlie Brooker started his career writing video game reviews before he went on to become a TV critic. He’s written and presented two successful TV series, Screenwipe and Newswipe, which pulled apart the news and what we watch on TV. But he’s best known as being the creator and writer of the hugely successful Black Mirror series, which looks at our unease with technology and has attracted some huge names. Series 5 is no different: Miley Cyrus is part of the cast. Charlie Brooker came into the Beyond Today studio to talk about his new series. He also touched on porn, phone addiction and what he thinks of Boris Johnson as a comic character. Producers: Philly Beaumont, Jaja Muhammad and Lucy Hancock. We've got a new season of Black Mirror on Netflix, so here are Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones to talk us through Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too, Smithereens and Striking Vipers. They also take the piss out of each other and make me LOL. Don't worry, there aren't any spoilers, so you're safe to listen before watching the season. It is, however, extremely sweary right from the start.  Along the way, there are bits on Newswipe and Screenwipe, a blast from the past of the Unnovations Catalogue (!) and some insight into Andrew Scott aka Moriarty, aka Fleabag's Hot Priest and the ranting character he plays in the episode Smithereens. Season 5 episodes discussed: Striking Vipers; Smithereens; Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too. Read a write-up of the interview in the New Statesman here: “For civilisation, it’s a bit depressing”: Charlie Brooker on Black Mirror’s relevance -- How has your industry moved from analogue to digital? Each episode, creative guests tell host Suchandrika Chakrabarti how the internet has revolutionised work. Charlie Brooker is a satirist, broadcaster and writer. He created the Emmy-award winning series, Black Mirror, and presents Screenwipe and Newswipe which won Best Comedy Entertainment Show award at the British Comedy Awards in 2011. Born in 1971, his career has been influenced both by his early love of technology - he was a keen computer gamer - and by his passion for the anarchic, surreal and experimental comedy of Monty Python and The Young Ones. After creating his own comic while at school, he went on to provide cartoons for the magazine Oink! at the age of 15. He cultivated his acerbic style and satirical pessimism as a writer of games reviews and features for PC Zone magazine. His online creation TVGoHome, an often caustic parody of television listings in the style of Radio Times, brought him to the attention of the Guardian newspaper where he began writing a TV review column entitled Screen Burn in 2000. This was adapted into a BBC Four television series, and various spin-offs, including Gameswipe and Newswipe, followed. The first two series of Black Mirror, an anthology of unrelated dramas focused around the unexpected consequences of new technologies, aired on Channel 4. The third series was released on Netflix in 2016, followed by a fourth at the end of 2017. Charlie is married to former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq and they have two young sons. Presenter: Kirsty Young Producer: Cathy Drysdale.
