Chuck Todd begins with a critical assessment of the Democratic Party's first 100 days under the Trump administration, noting widespread discontent among Democratic voters with party leadership. He examines the positioning of potential 2028 contenders, with AOC emerging as Bernie Sanders' heir apparent, Buttigieg and Pritzker carefully laying groundwork, and Gavin Newsom attempting to distance himself from his progressive reputation. He highlights Arizona's Ruben Gallego as a potential breakthrough national figure while acknowledging the Democratic brand remains problematic with many voters despite individual politicians' popularity. Then he dives into a fascinating conversation with "Black Mirror" creator Charlie Brooker, who discusses his dystopian anthology series through the lens of human response to technology rather than the technology itself. Brooker reflects on social media's evolution from optimistic beginning to profit-driven outrage machine, and shares insights on artificial intelligence's most pressing concerns: job displacement and algorithmic management. The conversation covers wide-ranging topics including healthcare differences between the US and UK, AI's impact on education and emotional connections, and the accelerating pace of technological change that feels increasingly destabilizing. Throughout, Brooker maintains his characteristic blend of dark humor and thoughtful analysis about our relationship with technology, even touching on how the COVID pandemic influenced his creative perspective. The episode concludes with "Ask Chuck," where Todd addresses listener questions about the potential echo chamber effect in local news, the potential fracturing of the Republican Party, and speculation about Trump's relationship with stock market fluctuations.00:00 Introduction02:15 The first 100 days report card for the Democratic Party03:00 Democratic voters are not happy with party leadership04:30 Which democratic leaders have performed well?07:20 AOC has become the heir apparent to Bernie Sanders10:30 Pete Buttigieg, JB Pritzker teeing up a 2028 run?12:45 Gavin Newsom is trying to distance himself from his progressive brand15:00 Ruben Gallego could break through on the national stage16:30 The Democratic brand is still toxic with voters18:25 Charlie Brooker joins the show! 18:45 Is Charlie the 21st century George Orwell 20:25 Is Black Mirror meant to be a warning? 22:25 The show isn't about technology, it's about the human response to these tools 25:25 First episode concept came from a podcast Charlie listened to 28:25 The concept of paying for healthcare is foreign outside of America 29:55 Facebook and X were fun at first, but then they turned up the dials for anger and grievance for profit 31:55 How long did Charlie have Black Mirror as an idea before it came to fruition? 33:55 Parallels between Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone?36:00 We thought social media would be great for society… then it turned out quite differently 37:00 How worried should we be about AI? 40:15 The worry with AI will be two things. Over ten years ago, Black Mirror burst onto our screens, bringing with it dystopian futures and exploring themes of how humanity would deal with rapidly evolving technology. Now in its seventh series, how much of this is a far-off future? And in 2025, are we now closer to the world of Black Mirror than ever before? Charlie Brooker joins Emily and Lewis in the studio to talk about how his own anxieties shape Black Mirror, the future of TV in a world of AI, and why he believes humanity will triumph in the end. Slight change of plans this week! The latest season of "Black Mirror" recently dropped, bringing with it the new "USS Callister: Into Infinity". Since we loved and covered the original a surprisingly long time ago we knew we had to check out the new one. The crew may be free of Daly but the stakes are higher, as prohibitive monetization makes survival almost impossible. And they don't have infinite lives anymore... Also this week: strike-scrapped plans, whale or Smurf, and the comedy stylings of Charlie Brooker! [note: spoilers for "Being John Malkovich" from 1:19:56 - 1:20:28]
Jo and Adam warmly welcome you to their Eggztra Special Easter Eggstravaganza, which they hope will make you hoppy and not (hot)cross. It's (hotcross) bun a funny old couple of weeks for satire, so leave it to our Eggsperts to pick out a few Eggstremely interesting Eggxamples to discuss. In this episode, Jo and Adam reflect of their Eggsperiences of watching the new series of Charlie Brooker's dystopian sci-fi satire show, Black Mirror and Apple TV's new cinema skewering satire The Studio and discuss the unexpected but highly welcome return of the hilarious podcast Dear Joan and Jericha. They also survey the satirical responses to J D Vance's first and very final meeting with the late Pope Francis, consider a very appropriate Eggstract from Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, and share notes on the best ways to eat an Easter Egg. Happy Easter, one and all!
No half-measures on the podcast this week as we cover some of the year's best content. On the movie side, we talk about 'Sinners,' Ryan Coogler's mind-blowing 1930s historical Delta blues movie–with vampires. Stephen Garrett hadn't even heard of this movie until about two weeks ago, and it was a five-star shocker for him. Neal Pollack, equally skeptical, equally and totally blown away. Coogler delivers a show-stopping musical number at the movie's midpoint, at which point a ton of vampire mayhem sets in and completely transforms the narrative. But it's testimony to how amazing Sinners is that the movie is perfectly entertaining even before the vampires take over. And then, once they do, it's as thrilling a horror movie as you'll ever see. Michael B. Jordan gives a career-defining performance as the twins at the center of the narrative. Hallee Steinfeld absolutely steams off the screen as a femme fatale for the ages. Jack O'Connell is one of the most sinister and compelling movie villains that we've seen in a long time, and Delroy Lindo lands a sure Oscar nomination as an old Delta bluesman who's comic relief, except when he's not. This is one of the best American movies in a long while, and it will be certain to be a huge contender for an awards season that doesn't start for another nine months. Sinners gets the BFG podcast's highest recommendation. Also heavily in the plus column, though maybe not quite as heavily, is the new season of Black Mirror. Omar Gallaga swoops into the pod dome to talk to Neal about the seventh season of Charlie Brooker's tech dystopia sci-fi anthology show. By this point we're all comfortable enough with Black Mirror's twists and tropes that they've ceased to be shocking, but there are few things on TV as satisfying as a well-executed Black Mirror episode. And this season is well-executed even by Black Mirror standards. Omar thinks that some of them run a bit long, but there are still plenty of twists and and thought-provoking ideas about tech, as well as some dark laughs and plenty of Easter eggs for true fans. It's a great week to be a fan of pop culture, and to listen to the BFG Podcast!
Happy Friday, happy Good Friday, happy Easter & happy Everything Is Content Day!This week on the podcast we're talking about Black Mirror season 7, The celestial sisters who went to space, & ask whether or not you can be too hot to work.Charlie Brooker's dystopian tech anthology Black Mirror is back for its seven series, and lots of the reviews have been really positive saying it's one of the most human series yet, and a return to its best form i.e. its first season. This one is star-studded, with Chris O'Dowd, Tracey Ellis Ross, Issa ray, Emma Corrin, Rashida Jones and Paul Giamatti to truly only name a few.Next up, in what sounds like an episode of Black Mirror but isn't... Katy Perry went to space… for eleven minutes. She was joined by Bezos's fiancée Lauren Sánchez and CBS presenter Gayle King, who was reported to have said a highlight of the flight was hearing Perry sing Louis Armstrong's 'What a Wonderful World'. We discuss. And finally, we are talking about t-shirts. Okay, not quite. We're talking about a debate which was sparked on X, in part, by pictures of two t-shirts. Here's what happened- on April 8th the writer Ashley Reese tweeted this as part of a wider conversation about women and work. She wrote: “1) women have always worked 2) it's incredible that women are able to be financially independent in ways that were not as common just a few generations ago and I'm not charmed by jokes—especially from other women—about how gainful employment is the worst thing to happen to women.”Is it that deep? Or is it just some silly t-shirts? If you've managed to watch any of the excellent seventh series of Black Mirror yet, you might have spotted our super sub Ben Bailey Smith popping up there... and just for you he's collared his fellow dystopians Charlie Brooker and Emma Corrin for a chat about the mind-bending anthology's latest iteration. Brooker is the writer and creator of the show, which has been sending sci-fi shivers down our spines since it first hit British TV screens in 2011, before going global with Netflix in 2016. So for over a decade, “it's all a bit Black Mirror” has been the phrase on everyone's lips whenever real-world technology makes another ever-so-slightly terrifying leap forward. Emma Corrin stars in episode three of the new series, ‘Hotel Reverie', in which a cutting-edge filmmaking technology called ReDream allows modern day actors to star in high-tech remakes of classic films. Actor Brandy (Issa Rae) steps into the world of a 1940s movie—where she meets Corrin's golden age star Dorothy. Charlie and Emma chat to Ben about Hotel Reverie and the rest of the brand new series. They talk golden age Hollywood, the shipping forecast, and erm... bowling? It goes places. Listen now for the whole story! Learn more about your ad choices.

Yes, it's time for James to bang on about The Last Of Us again (sorry) but that's okay, because we have Charlie Brooker and Jessica Rhodes on the show to balance things out by talking Black Mirror Season 7 (37:05). Aside from forcing Kay to watch more ‘zomzies' in The Last Of Us (on Sky Atlantic), we also head over to Disney+ to watch Denise Gough take part in the playdate from hell in The Stolen Girl (1:28:19) and take a slightly surreal look at the world of self-sharpening drill bits (stay with us) in Government Cheese on Apple TV+ (1:39:46). The episode follows Cameron Walker, portrayed by Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who, The Thick of It), a former video game journalist whose obsession with a 1990s life simulation game called "Thronglets" leads him down a dark path. As he becomes increasingly entwined with the digital creatures, Cameron's reality begins to unravel, culminating in a chilling climax that questions the very nature of humanity and technology. The episode also features Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy) as the younger Cameron, James Nelson-Joyce (The Outlaws) as DCI Kano, Michele Austin (This Is Going to Hurt) as Jen Minter, Will Poulter (Bandersnatch, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) reprising his role as Colin Ritman, and Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing) as Mohan Thakur. Min 36: PREPARADOS PARA THE LAST OF US. T2 "The Last of Us" temporada 2 abre con una herida sin cerrar y una tensión brutal Después de una primera temporada que conquistó a crítica y público al adaptar con fidelidad e inteligencia el aclamado videojuego de Naughty Dog, The Last of Us regresa con un primer episodio de su segunda temporada que no pierde el tiempo: es intenso, emocionalmente devastador y, sobre todo, valiente. Min 39.

Joel Morris is a multi-award winning comedy writer, and a contributor to the widely beloved Paddington films. One of the best regarded comedic talents in Britain, during the past two decades he has written for everyone from David Mitchell to Miranda Hart to Ronnie Corbett. A long-time collaborator with Charlie Brooker, he was a key part of the BAFTA-winning Wipe shows, and co-creator of the comedy character Philomena Cunk, whose dim-witted documentaries are beloved around the world. A busy author, he wrote The Framley Examiner, a spoof on local British newspapers, as well as the multi-million selling series of Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups. In 2024 he published, ‘Be Funny or Die: How Comedy Works and Why It Matters,' analysing everything from stand-up to slapstick. This week, Brendan, Nathan, Steven B and Johnny Spandrell penetrate the heart of the Vatican, only to discover that behind its dusty and arcane lore lies an eldritch horror that threatens the very idea of existence itself. It's Extremis. Notes and links The most important inspiration here is Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code (2003), a massively popular and widely-panned thriller about a dark secret that threatens the credibility of the Catholic Church itself (but probably not the one you're thinking of). Perhaps this review of the book will give you a good sense of its style. It turns out that the dark secret in The Da Vinci code was originally revealed in 1982 in a best-selling book called The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail (or in the US, more pithily, Holy Blood, Holy Grail). This book was, terrifyingly but unsurprisingly, co-written by our very own Henry Lincoln, co-writer of The Abominable Snowmen, The Web of Fear and The Dominators. Steven remembers the first Doctor talking about his religious beliefs in a passage from The Empire of Glass (1995) by Andy Lane. Here, in Chapter 6, the Doctor is talking to Galileo. “In short, sir, I am currently an agnostic, and by the time my life draws to its close, and I have travelled from one side of the universe to the other and seen every sight there is to see, I firmly expect to be an atheist. Does that answer your question?” In a recent episode of The Bjay BJ Game Show, Brendan and Bjay review a game called The Talos Principle, a video game set in a computer simulation which deals with questions of identity and religion. Nathan has a website called the Randomiser at therandomiser.net, which can help you pick a random Doctor Who story to watch, but which can also (more importantly, perhaps) reassure you that you're not living in a computer simulation. The properly randomised Doctor Who podcast which Nathan appeared on is called Pull to Open, with Pete Pachal and Chris Taylor. As a kind of public service, Steven alerts us to a 2015 article by Charlie Brooker about a group of German researchers created a version of Super Mario World in which Mario was self-aware and emotionally affected by his experiences in the game. Steven also draws our attention to a branch of philosophy concerned with the possibility that we might all be living in a computer simulation. This 2020 article in Scientific American sums up the state of play. Johnny refers to Kit Pedler's original conception of the Cybermen as a race of Star Monks — an idea that El Sandifer runs with in a productive and interesting way in her essay on The Tenth Planet. Johnny Spandrell takes aim at this story in an entertaining and insightful blog post on Extremis, written in 2018. Here's a link to the Character Options Series 10 action figure set, featuring the Doctor, Bill and a heavily made up Missy, for those of you who enjoy that kind of thing. And finally, here's Donna Summer singing about this story forty years early in Once Upon a Time…. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.bsky.social and Brendan is at @retrobrendo.bsky.social, while Steven is on X at @steedstylin and Johnny is @JohnnySpandrell. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. It's first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. Just two weeks ago, on Startling Barbara Bain, we faced what is perhaps the most memorable and terrifying episode of Space: 1999 ever with our usual mix of valour and prosecco. It's Dragon's Domain. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we visited a holographic jazz bar in Vegas in 1962 for a surpassingly brilliant episode of Deep Space Nine called His Way.

In this episode, Peabody Awards executive director Jeffrey Jones interviews Black Mirror's showrunner and creator Charlie Brooker. They discuss the importance of interrogating technology's role in our life, disrupting the “tech as savior” narrative, the way both satire and sci-fi imagine our potential (and potentially disastrous) futures and the clash between the ideals of technology and our very human flaws. In the second half, Gabe González talks to tech journalist Carole Cadwalladr about the limitations of journalism to affect change, and the importance of entertainment narratives such as Black Mirror to help the public see and understand the imminent dangers posed by a world increasingly shaped by “Big Tech.”
RETRO RHLSTP #84 - Gulping Robot Toilets - Richard is hoping he will find his way into the Guinness Book of Records, but Norris Macwhirter is not answering his calls. His guest is making a return visit to RHLSTP after 7 and a half years (but will his hair reveal his success?) - it's the amazing Charlie Brooker. The conversation is predictably dark and disgusting incorporating Charlie's fury at a seven year old who makes an amazing living opening boxes, trying to introduce his kids to the Young Ones, what the best pinball machine is, whether having sex with your best friend via computer game is cheating, the complexity of writing a choose your own adventure TV show, being born with an umbilical cord around your neck and how you can kill sperm with urine. Plus the inevitability of nuclear war and whether all people over 45 need to die to save the world.
