Our hosts also discuss the season finale of The Last Of Us and two new shows - The Consultant and Shrinking - and give their sales pitches for why you should be watching. Oh yeah, and Joe waxes passionate about the sport of boxing. Who knew he used to be a boxer??!!
This episode was recorded in the beautiful city of Belfast, as the team finally fulfilled their dream to take the show over to Ireland as part of The Out to Lunch Festival. It turns out the Irish make excellent detectives, and this week's guest, TV writer and creator of Derry Girls, Lisa McGee showed early signs of crime solving prowess - and it would appear to run in the family, as you'll hear. After hearing Lisa's amazing story, the team then venture into a case involving perhaps the vainest man in 1800s Norfolk, which is no mean feat, as soap had yet to be invented (citation needed). We then round things off with an astounding story from a member of the audience, which begs the question if sandwiches should be kept in a safe? Tommy Tiernan has built a career as one of Ireland's funniest -- and, at times, most inappropriate stand-up comics and comic actors. Winning the best newcomer award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the early 1990s, Tommy soon became a favorite on Irish tv, including The Late Late Show and the sitcom Father Ted. More recently, Tommy has hosted the Tommy Tiernan Show in which the guests are unknown to him until the moment they walk on stage. And for American audiences, he is perhaps best known as "Da Gerry", the perpetually beleaguered father on the hit Netflix show "Derry Girls." And did we mention he's a Guinness World Record Holder? Well, he is -- for performing standup for 36 hours and fifteen minutes straight during a 2009 Galway show! It won't be 36 hours worth, but you can find extended clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Tommy Tiernan? Tommy is a comic who often finds the line between comedy that is "ok" and that which is really not by crossing it. Here Tommy tells the audience on The Late Late Show about one such case. https://youtu.be/u3MG1iIZZjQ Tommy's bond with standup crowds is legendary -- as is the way he lets the audience in on his frustrations in ways that are always clever -- and often quite naughty! https://youtu.be/-DWc9CArliU While he made his initial name as a standup, Tommy has built a fine career as a character actor as well. In the Netflix hit Derry Girls, Tommy plays the beleaguered father ("Da Gerry"). Here's a nice collection of Tommy's finest moments from that show. https://youtu.be/JpYol7ZP6hk
Joe and Jared have made it to 50 episodes! Thank you all for listening! As a tribute to their patience and support, your hosts bring on their better halves, Irene and Heidi, to discuss their favorite movies, Trainspotting and Jerry Maguire. These two selections could not be more polar opposites! The four of them dive in and discuss what makes these films so excellent and worth watching right now.Music by Brendan Clavin

New research from Cancer Research UK and NHS Digital has revealed that Black women from Caribbean and African backgrounds are more likely to be diagnosed with certain types of cancer at later stages, when treatment is less likely to be successful. This study is the first to show that ethnicity is a significant factor in late-stage diagnosis for women with breast, ovarian, uterine, non-small cell lung cancer and colon cancer. Nuala speaks to Kruti Shrotri, Head of Policy Development at Cancer Research UK and Adobea Obeng who sought medical help three times over two years before she was diagnosed with incurable breast cancer. Eleanor McEvoy is one of Ireland's foremost songwriters and has worked with the likes of U2, Sinead O'Connor and Mary Black. She is the composer and co-performer of A Woman's Heart, the title track for the best-selling Irish album in Irish history, and one of Ireland's favourite folk songs, which recently featured in the award winning Derry Girls. One of Eleanor's songs, Sophie, is used in treatment centres to treat patients with eating disorders. She joins Nuala live in the studio to discuss her UK tour, the inspiration behind the tracks of her most recent album Gimme Some Wine and to perform the track South Anne Street. In 2014, thousands of Yazidi women and girls were captured as part of an Islamic State Group genocide. While many of the men were shot, women and girls were forced into sex slavery for IS. Today, many of these women and children still live in camps in Iraq as they have nowhere else to go. Now, the Iraqi government says they're going to close the camps. Nuala McGovern is joined by journalist Rachel Wright and CEO of Bellwether International Rachel Miner to talk about the conditions in the camps and what more needs to be done. Judges from the Special Immigration Appeals Commission have today decided the removal of British citizenship from Shamima Begum, who left the UK as a 15-year-old schoolgirl to join Islamic State, was lawful. In the hearing last year challenging the decision, her legal team said it ignored the fact that she may have been trafficked into Syria. Nuala is joined by BBC Home Affairs Correspondent Daniel Sandford. In 1838 a middle-class Victorian woman, Mrs Anne Sykes, was given a diary on her wedding day which she filled over the years with snippets of clothes and household fabrics, carefully annotating each one. Nearly two hundred years later Kate Strasdin, a fashion historian, came across the scrapbook. She spent six years researching the materials she found stuck to the album's pages and created her own book The Dress Diary of Mrs Anne Skyes about this unique record of the lives of Victorian women.

Imagine living in a world where everyone has a superpower-except for you. That's the idea behind the brand new Disney+ series ‘Extraordinary'. The series, which launches on the 25th of January, tells the story of Jen who missed out on getting her superpower when she turned 18 and now is feeling a little bit lost. The show is the debut project of Fermanagh's own Emma Moran and stars not one but two Corkonians in the lead roles. Emma joined Dermot and Dave to chat about the very understated way she celebrated getting her first TV show, working with Sr Michael from Derry Girls and revealed her preferred superpower!

Joe and Jared discuss their favorite 5 TV shows of 2022. Some are obvious hits that everyone has heard of, while others, maybe not so much. From Andor to The Bear to The White Lotus, with many stops in between, these guys cover a lot of genres and have fun talking about the shows they most connected with in 2022. What shows did they miss? Listen in and let them know!
Thank you very much to Ashleigh for commissioning this episode!I have to say, while I'm super sad that this show is over, I feel that this finale was a perfect stopping place, in terms of the overall arc for the show's growth as well as tonally being a little melancholy but mostly hopeful. I think it's a good indicator that a TV series ended when it should if you're feeling both sad but satisfied.Thank you all so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Thank you to Ashleigh for commissioning this episode! There were so many fun happy things going on in this one that I completely let my guard down and then the last scenes happened and knocked me on my ass.I hate this.
Thank you to Ashleigh for commissioning this episode! This was a fun parents-only episode about the wildest night of their lives back in '77 when they were all in school living through some of the worst of the violence of the Troubles while trying to just have normal lives.I'm very into this secret, and the way they told the story was super fun to watch. I love this show! Thanks for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thank you to Ashleigh for commissioning this episode! In this episode of Derry Girls, we get an interesting overlap in the plots where the girls are convinced the house they've been assigned to clean is haunted, while the parents are together trying to contact a spirit of their own. In the end, one of the ghosts is proved to be a regular flesh-and-blood man, but the other seems to be interested in helping Joe find something he's misplaced. Thanks so much to you all for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
Plastic waste never really breaks down. It just splits into tinier and tinier pieces until it becomes trillions of microscopic bits scattered across the world. Microplastics are everywhere: In the air we breathe and the water we drink, atop the highest mountains and in the deepest parts of the ocean. Microplastics are even coursing through our bloodstreams and sitting in our digestive systems. It's a problem we have only recently begun to understand, and are still trying to figure out how to solve. This week on Gadget Lab, Matt Simon, WIRED climate writer and author of the new book A Poison Like No Other, joins us to talk about how microplastics became such a scourge and what—if anything—we can do about it. Show Notes Matt's book A Poison Like No Other: How Microplastics Corrupted Our Planet and Our Bodies is out now. Read an excerpt of the book on WIRED. You can also find other Matt Simon stories about microplastics and the climate by browsing his author page. Recommendations Matt recommends Derry Girls on Netflix. Lauren recommends a plastic or metal water bottle that you can use over and over again. She likes the 32-ounce narrow mouth Nalgene bottle. Mike recommends bringing back Follow Friday on Twitter. 3 - Rich opens the show discussing the border crisis and the response, or lackthereof from Biden, and possible Presidential candidate Gavin Newsome is saying something about it. But another couple busloads of immigrants are expected to hit Philly tomorrow. 310 - Are we in a pandemic? Democrats actions depict the border as not a problem, but fight to pay off student loans under the guise of Covid. 330 - If Democrats end the filibuster and are able to bring in Puerto Rico as a state it will be over for the current political spectrum. 340 - Republicans are all talk until they get into power and then they start spending like Democrats. Doesn't the timing of Scam Bankman-Fried's arrest come at quite the convenient moment? Rich gives his insight on the situation. 4 - Democrats don't comment on the flood of immigrants coming into the country. 410 - Rich moves to discussing the Twitter files and CNN's response to not being the ones to receive the files to break the story. They also made another erroneous claim that the laptop story is still disinformation. These people don't stand up for anything except for their pet projects, but no tangible issues and all their principles. 420 - The Luggage Thief gets his slap on the wrist. 430 - Rick Grimaldi joins the show to talk about the war on employers. The National labor board seems to be way out of their realm trying to advance their progressive agendas. It's always the corporation's philosophy that is the problem according to the Democrats instead of allowing businesses to make the best decisions for the company. 450 - The Luggage Kleptomaniac also worked to keep parents in the dark when it comes to schools giving gender-affirming care to their child. We cannot be complicit in allowing this to happen to our youth. 5 - If we lose Title 42, we will lose more than a 747 plane's worth of people daily as the gates will be wide open. 510 - Democrats are willingly letting illegal immigrants in and rather than treating the immigration problems, they would rather cater to the ones that come in. Just playing straight politics on this issue. 520 - Representative Amen Brown joins us once again to discuss his big announcement tomorrow, and his fight to better the city one day at a time. He discusses law enforcement at all levels, the minutiae of Philadelphia politics(especially on a notorious day in the city), and his view for a brighter tomorrow for Philadelphia. 550 - Did you know unvaccinated drivers are the worst? What a ludacris article. 6 - Rich talks with Tom Homan about border control, Title 42, fentanyl, and the overall morale of everyone stationed down Mexico way. 620 - Have you watched the White Lotus? How about Derry Girls? What do you think of the Sixers stadium news? 630 - Need makeup for your euthanization? 640 - The White House keeps pushing the false narrative of the vaccine saving lives. Fauci is so unbelievably tone deaf in this clip.

Michelle Gallen grew up in Northern Ireland's County Tyrone amid the period of sectarian bloodshed known as the Troubles. By the time she left home for university in the 1990s, her town was neatly segregated, with Protestants sticking to their neighborhoods and Catholics to theirs. Gallen's new novel, Factory Girls, takes place in a town much like this during the summer of 1994. While waiting for her final exam results, Maeve Murray lands a job at a shirt factory working alongside her best friends, Aoife O'Neill and Caroline Jackson—and a gaggle of Protestants. It's the first time in their lives that the girls have spent time with “the other side” (let alone working under the thumb of a British boss). As tensions rise outside the factory, the temperature rises within it, too, and what started as a summer job ends up teaching—and costing—Maeve more than she imagined.Go beyond the episode:Michelle Gallen's Factory GirlsListen to Nicola Coughlan read Gallen's debut novel Big Girl, Small TownWe do love Derry Girls, tooIn 1993, Dolores O'Riordan wrote the most heartbreaking song about the Troubles: “Zombie,” which the Cranberries released in 1994 after the first ceasefireThere are dozens of books about the Troubles—we recommend starting with Richard English's Armed Struggle: The History of the IRATune in every week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. Writer, producer, creator of CBS' The McCarthys, and overall genius Brian Gallivan joins Matt and Dave this week. It is a reunion of sorts, as Brian and Dave lived on the same hall in the same dorm at Holy Cross back in the last century. They talk about it! (They talk A LOT about it! You are invited to replace the words “Holy Cross” with whatever repressive school environment you might have found yourself in!) Also: Taylor Swift, Derry Girls, pickleball, the pressure of the closet on a Catholic boy, coming out in Ireland, creating a network sitcom, and…Holy Cross.
Worst Case Scenario with Stephanie Hansen! The dirt alert; Dawn finished all 3 seasons of Derry Girls; Funny moments from last year's Disney Trip
This week, the panel begins by reviewing the Weird Al biopic, Weird. Then, a discussion about the entire run of Derry Girls. Finally, Matt Levine joins to explain crypto. In Slate Plus, the panel takes on a listener question and talks about comfort food. Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Endorsements Dana: A movie I saw a couple of weeks ago that is one of the best movies I've seen this year. If you can see it will depend on where you are but keep your eyes open for this Hindi-language documentary called All That Breathes. Julia: I'd like to recommend an Instagram account and that Instagram account is by the name of Hot Dads of Picture Books and it is what it says. It's basically somebody curating pictures of smokeshow dads from picture books. I can't attest to its future longevity but I appreciate its commitment to the bit. Steve: The wonderful Mimi Parker, drummer and vocalist of the band Low, has died. I really truly love their music so I'm endorsing both Low and their music but also very much the remembrance by Slate's own Sam Adams. Low made this crazy, wonderful, spooky rock and roll music that I adore. Outro music: "Ruins" by Origo Podcast production by Cameron Drews. Production assistance by Yesica Balderrama.
