#432 Womblin' Free - Richard has had a crisp and a field disappointment, but it won't stop him interviewing the heck out of director, writer and omelette chef, Joe Cornish. They talk about offending Claudia Winkleman's listeners, how Channel 4 messed up a sketch show with an incredible cast, (briefly) having the number one Netflix show (check out Lockwood and Co), whether being a director is all it's cracked up to be, how losing a Fiat Punto led to Attack The Block, working with a Young One and whether ageing is something to fear. Plus the surprise of finding out that someone who has died was still alive and a bizarre synchronicity on the song with the best intro. And Rich lands himself another acting job, as long as he fulfils one condition.Come and see us live http://richardherring.com/rhlstpSUPPORT THE SHOW!See details of the RHLSTP LIVE DATES Watch our TWITCH CHANNELBecome a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITE Buy DVDs and books from GO FASTER STRIPE Hosted on Acast. Comedy writer Ben Elton's autobiography What Have I Done? tells the story of a career of comedy firsts, writing hit shows like Blackadder, The Young Ones and Upstart Crow. His love of words is legendary - as a small child his mother wouldn't let him speak til she was on her second cup of tea to braving the "Oxbridge tutorial" vibe of the Blackadder rehearsal room with Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and Rowan Atkinson. Great Pottery Throw Down judge Keith Brymer Jones is a man so mad about pots they can move him to tears. He's now on the road with a tour about his renovation of a Welsh church complete with pigeon poo that took £40,000 to remove. But did you know he puts his remarkable resilience down to his ballet training?Comic Suzi Ruffell is also on the road with her stand up show, dressed correctly - 'shirt, tie and mullet', she says - but she's also written a memoir slash how-to-guide, Am I having fun now?, about winning (and laughing) at life in spite of her deep anxiety about it.And music from Sarah Jane Morris's new album paying tribute to the great women singer songwriters and from Anglo-American rocker Barns Courtney.Presenter: Stuart Maconie Producer: Olive Clancy Assistant Producer: Sam Nixon Technical Producers: John Cole and Kelly Young

Let's get on our bikes and ride this weekend !!- we're talking about Tomorrow's 1967 psych classic, "My White Bicycle." A story of a rebellious youth flouting society's conventions, full of trippy headphone frolicking! Leviathan were the next act to take up the bike ... er ... song ... I guess the bell was broken by the time they got it? Nazareth actually had a hit with the song, but we wonder what the heck is going on with the vocals!? We could do without the bland 70s prog solo section, but your mileage may vary. A broken Axl, perhaps? We really like the version by Neil (aka Nigel Planer) from Brit tv's The Young Ones. This one really feels like a proper bike ride! It's got a Captain Sensible vibe - and it brings back the bell! The psych feel returns with Valentin Noiret's version, which adds some cool Kraut-rock elements. Ding ding!!

He looks back at their first shows, their devoted audience, “old-fashioned rules”, highlights, regrets, the value of friendship, “putting on the black suit again” and how it felt to rejoin after 30 years on the outside. And all this too … … playing drums in an Essex panto while pelted with boiled sweets … Dave Vanian when he was a grave-digger … punk rock strongholds the world over – “South America was like being in the Beatles” … Mexico and other places you can still torch a drumkit … Mr Scabies, aged 70. “Even my mother calls me Rat. It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of another guitar hero giant whose riffs were mighty enough to support Lemmy: Phil Campbell. He was a guitarist who rarely got mentioned in the circles of recognized guitar greats, but his playing on 16 Motörhead albums provides all the badass-guitarist validation needed. Best known as Lemmy's right-hand guy, he also released 3 fantastic albums with his 3 sons as Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons. We pay tribute to this amazing Welsh guitarist and celebrate his entire discography! Rest in power, Phil! New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace, Phil. Your pure musicality and amazing songs will live forever in our hearts! Songs this week include: Persian Risk – “Ridin' High” from Ridin' High - Single (1983) Motörhead – “Deaf Forever” from Orgasmatron (1986) Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons – “Take Aim” from Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons - EP(2016) Phil Campbell – “Rocking Chair (feat. Leon Stanford)” from Old Lions Still Roar (2019) Motörhead – “Thunder & Lightning” from Bad Magic (2015) Cro-Mags – “From The Grave” from In The Beginning (2020) Hawkwind – “Silver Machine” from 50 Live (2019) Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons – “Waves” from We're The Bastards (2020) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts! Welcome back to the podcast where we put the biggest theatrical releases up against the best of home streaming. This week, the full crew—host Tosin, Shaun Harris, Sharon Bollen, and Holly Nessling—are back together and facing a major cinematic disagreement that might just tear the show apart. On the Big Screen The crew heads to the cinema to experience what is arguably the biggest film of the week, but not everyone is on board: Project Hail Mary: Based on the novel by Andy Weir, this Ryan Gosling-led space epic has caused a massive "schism" on the podcast. Tosin and Sharon are all-in on this emotional and visually immersive journey, praising its dual performance and "transcendent" quality. Shaun, however, found it "pretentious" and "sickly." We dive deep into the science, the relationship between Grace and Rocky, and why this is a must-see on an IMAX screen. Ready or Not Here I Come: The follow-up to the 2019 cult hit. While it might not have the surprise factor of the original, the crew discusses how it holds its own and why Samara Weaving continues to dominate the genre. They Will Kill You: A chaotic, "Gonzo" secret screening set in a nine-story Gothic hotel. Think Black Snake Moan meets Deadpool with a healthy dose of cartoonish violence and a cast drawn from "out-there" fields. On the Stream Scarpetta (Amazon Prime): A star-studded adaptation of the Patricia Cornwell novels. Despite a cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Bobby Cannavale, Holly and Tosin find the series a bit "meh." We discuss the "timey-wimey" plot, the odd inclusion of AI, and that frustrating cliffhanger ending. The Tower Season 1 (ITVX): Badlands: Road to Fury: Shaun digs up this 2014 gem (originally titled Young Ones ). We discuss the sneaky retitling by Amazon and its slow-burn, futuristic Western vibes. A Fond Farewell The crew takes a moment to pay tribute to the late Chuck Norris. From Walker, Texas Ranger to the iconic internet memes, we remember a legend who was a massive part of our cinematic childhoods. The Verdict In one of our closest races yet, Cinema narrowly edges out the streaming platforms with a score of 3.34 to 2.91. It seems the big-screen experience (and a talking alien spider) was enough to take the win! Find us on all social media platforms @NetflixVsCinema and let us know: Are you Team Tosin or Team Shaun on Project Hail Mary? Is Netflix killing cinemas? Each week we weigh up what we've seen in cinemas with what we've watched online at home and figure out which provided the best time. At least, we did before COVID jumped in and declared Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney + and friends the winner. John and Jim welcome back special guest artist Jerry Lange to discuss the Season 23 opener - a story that surprises everyone involved and showcases Colin Baker delivering what may be his finest performance in the role. The Return After 18 Months: John provides extensive background on how the show returned after the hiatus with a reduced budget, shorter episode format, and completely different vision from what was originally planned. Discussion covers the tumultuous production environment, Eric Saward's declining interest, and the challenges facing the production team. Dominic Glynn's Theme: The hosts react to the new arrangement of the Doctor Who theme - and Jim does NOT hold back his feelings. Discussion explores why this version feels cheaper than previous iterations and whether anything can redeem it. Jerry's Fresh Perspective: As someone experiencing Colin Baker's Doctor properly for the first time, Jerry shares his impressions of the "grumpy Doctor" and how this performance compares to what he expected. His observations about how each Doctor can be characterized provide interesting insights. Colin Baker's Courtroom Brilliance: All three hosts agree: Colin Baker shines brightest in the trial sequences. Jim examines how Baker balances humor and outrage, the effective "fencing" between the Doctor and the Valeyard, and why these courtroom interruptions actually enhance rather than detract from the story. The Mysterious Planet Story: The hosts discuss Robert Holmes' final full script, the Beneath the Planet of the Apesinfluences, the impressive (and expensive) model work, Drathro's excellent robot design, and whether Glitz and Dibber work as comedy relief characters. Jerry questions whether certain characters were even necessary to the narrative. Production Challenges: Discussion covers wrong studio construction, extended recaps to fill time, rating troubles despite heavy BBC promotion (blamed on the Roland Rat lead-in and The A-Team counterprogramming), and which actors stood out in guest roles. The Valeyard Factor: The hosts examine Michael Jayston's performance, the mysterious prosecutor's agenda, and why his dynamic with Colin Baker creates such compelling television despite being filmed primarily in one courtroom set. Listener Perspectives: Jamie Girl weighs in on the arrogance factor and Perry's odd reaction to Earth's fate, while Jameson provides expanded media context and praises the Baker/Jayston chemistry. Jeff from Australia offers thoughts on problematic elements and the Young Ones connections in "Revelation of the Daleks". Coming Up Next: Patreon Exclusive (Monday): Dominic Glynn theme variations, the comics "Exodus," "Revelation," and "Genesis," plus another spin of the Memory TARDIS wheel. Main Feed Episode (Friday for Patreon, Following Saturday for All): Parts 5-8 of Trial of a Time Lord - "Mindwarp." John handles narration duties, and he cryptically promises Jim will thank him for the division of labor. Author and broadcaster Samira Ahmed used to watch A Hard Day's Night once a week and she's just written an enthralling account of the shoot and its impact for the BFI's Classic Films series. A movie, she points out, that celebrates Britishness and suburbia made largely by immigrants that broke every Hollywood rule, a film made to capture the essence of the Beatles before the bubble burst “which turned out to be the start of something not the end”. She talks to us here about … … the film's connections with the Goons, the Young Ones, Dr Strangelove, Star Wars, Billy Liar, It's Trad Dad and the Nouvelle Vague … and its influence - from the Dave Clark Five's Catch Us If You Can and Paul Jones' Privilege to Charlie XCX and the Moment … how the train sequence for I Should Have Known Better invented pop video … the play John and Paul wrote (Pilchard!) that was a homage to its scriptwriter Alun Owen … Paul's two-day solo shoot with Isla Blair and other (mercifully) deleted scenes ... Profumo, pirate radio, the changing Britain of 1964 … Pattie Boyd, Anna Quayle, Alison Seebohm and other stand-out female stars … Wilfred Brambell's gigantic fee and how badly his part has aged … why George and Ringo emerged as the stars … surely the greatest scene? – “She's a drag, a well-known drag. We turn the sound down on her and say rude things” … “hair that moved!”: the film's impact in the USA … “beat-up and depraved in the nicest possible way” … and how the dubbed-on dialogue about Ingmar Bergman made the German version “a film for cineastes”. Franchise marketing is more than running ads or managing brand awareness. It's a strategic process that connects entrepreneurs, brands, and customers through trust, storytelling, and value-driven engagement. The best franchise marketing strategies help businesses expand their reach while maintaining the integrity of the brand at every level — from national awareness to local community relationships. Few people understand that dynamic better than Ali Kraus, Chief Marketing Officer at Benetrends Financial. With deep expertise in franchise development marketing, digital strategy, and brand building, Ali has become one of the most respected voices in the franchising industry. Her leadership reflects how marketing can not only grow businesses but also empower people and strengthen communities. By integrating creative strategy with practical execution, she helps franchisors and franchisees navigate challenges in visibility, recruitment, and retention. Her belief in collaboration and community has made her a strong advocate for empowering women in franchising, both through her work at Benetrends and her leadership with the International Franchise Association's Women's Franchise Committee. As an incoming Chair of the committee, Ali is helping pave the way for more women to find opportunities in leadership, ownership, and influence within the franchise industry. Her work demonstrates how franchise marketing can be a vehicle for change — not only driving business results but also creating a more inclusive and diverse community of entrepreneurs. In an era where consumers demand authenticity and connection, Ali's perspective on franchise marketing reminds business owners that success isn't just about selling a product. It's about building relationships, aligning brand purpose with customer values, and giving people a reason to believe in the businesses they support. For franchise brands and entrepreneurs alike, her message is clear: effective marketing starts with clarity, consistency, and connection. When combined with the right funding foundation and strategic leadership, those elements create a roadmap for sustainable growth. Introduced as ‘The Lost Colony', this is another episode of The Goon Show which sees Neddie Seagoon being duped by Grytpype-Thynne and Moriarty. In this case, they convince him that he is a Native American who rightfully owns New York – his ancestors having sold the land to Dutch settlers in the 1620s for a piece of brown string, eleven pence in notes, a Mickey Mouse watch, remains of a small boiled chicken and a life-sized statue of Sabrina. Seagoon paddles to America in a zinc bath tub and through a dubious transaction secures a Native American birth certificate. He tries to sue the US government, claiming New York belongs to him, but ends up in jail. Once free and bent on revenge he attempts to blow the city sky-high – but at what cost? Joining Tyler this week is writer & producer Tom Salinsky, whose new podcast – All British Comedy Explained – is an exercise in introducing British comedy to his American friend, comedian Abigoliah Schamaun. Abigoliah has lived in the UK for many years but her knowledge of British comedy history is limited so Tom is trying to put that right. At the time of recording they have covered Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Young Ones and Not Only But Also – all three of them game-changers – and coming up they will be examining The Goon Show, so Tyler figured it was a neat idea to get Tom onto discuss an episode which rarely gets talked about. The Sale Of Manhattan was broadcast almost exactly seventy years ago and while it contains some questionable stereotypes there is plenty to enjoy and it was a great opportunity to gain Tom's perspective on the series. WARREN CUMMINGS and I, perhaps unwisely, try to analyse some TV comedy.First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on November 16th 2025.This week, in a show we recorded earlier in the autumn just as VISION ON SOUND returned from its summer hiatus, I welcome back WARREN CUMMINGS once again, and we took the opportunity to delve deep into an area that is always a little bit outside my personal comfort zone, as we tackle the tricky little matter of television comedy in as analytical a way as we are capable of, as we consider whether or not some of the recognised classics from the archives are as enjoyable as we like to believe they are. This was prompted by me picking up a bit of MONTY PYTHON on DVD and finding some of it to be “difficult” to watch, and WARREN throws the somewhat problematical nature of some of SPIKE MILLIGAN's television work into the mix, before we move into a broader consideration of the comedy of a different time.Over the course of this hour we'll also touch upon some radio comedy, some TV sitcoms, and the work of metaphorical comedy giants such as PETER COOK and DUDLEY MOORE, as well as talking rather fondly about shows like ALEXEI SAYLE's STUFF, VIC REEVES' BIG NIGHT OUT, THE YOUNG ONES and the more recent work of DIANE MORGAN whose PHILOMENA CUNK is one of the more successful recent comedy creations.PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth

Ben Elton was instrumental in the transformation of British comedy that took place in the 1980s. His scripts for The Young Ones and Blackadder were fresh, anarchic, rude, clever and hilarious. The people that worked alongside Ben - Richard Curtis, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Rik Mayall, Ade Edmondson, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders - to name but a few - are legendary. In this episode of Rosebud, Ben talks to Gyles about his parents, his father's family story - they had escaped persecution in Germany at the start of the war - and how he became interested in comedy as a young boy. He talks about the process of writing Blackadder, which was sometimes tortuous, and what it felt like to be slated by the critics when We Will Rock You first opened in the West End.Ben's autobiography, "What Have I Done?" is out now and available here. Rosebud has a new website www.rosebudpodcast.co.uk and a new Facebook group - just search "Rosebud Reflections". Enjoy this! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Loose Ends this week is full of people who aren't afraid to say or do difficult things in the name of entertainment. The actor Nigel Planer will forever be associated with the character Neil from The Young Ones, so much so that Nigel's Mum thought he was vegetarian because Neil was, though Nigel definitely isn't. At least, he says, she remembered his name. His autobiography - Young Once - reflects the fact that brilliant though Neil is, Nigel has done far, far more than that as a poet, author and performer. Life merges with art, or at least comedy in Bryony Kimmings' new show - Bog Witch - too. It's all about what happened when she moved to the country, had an eco-conversion and found out the difference between a frog and a toad. Rowan McCabe's written about being a doorstep poet, who knocks on the doors of perfect strangers and offers to write them a poem about the things that mean most to them. Find out how many ways that can go wrong. Plus music from Mercury Music Prize nominee Emma-Jean Thackray's album Weirdo and from Studio Electrophonique aka Sheffield singer songwriter James Leesley.Hosted by Stuart Maconie Produced in Salford by Olive Clancy
