GODZILLA!But not the Godzilla many fans were expecting when a US remake was announced in the '90s, and not the first attempt to make a US version of the legendary kaiju.Steve Miner had tried to get a 3D version off the ground in 1983, and then there was the infamous Jan de Bont version in 1994. Both stories are fascinating enough, but always lurking in the background of the 1994 version were Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin.They'd been offered Godzilla in the early '90s but turned it down repeatedly. The first entry in our 1998 asteroid movie double feature. Before Bruce Willis and Aerosmith saved the world, Deep Impact asked a simpler question: what would humanity do if the end was truly coming? We revisit this emotional disaster drama to see if it still packs a punch.

Chris Paul is joined by his good friend Josh Capps, a literature professor and screenwriter from Louisiana, sitting in for Burning Bright. The two break down Warren Beatty's 1998 political satire Bulworth, which Beatty wrote, directed, and starred in opposite Halle Berry, Oliver Platt, Don Cheadle, Isaiah Washington, and a nearly silent Sean Astin. Josh argues the film sits on a fascinating cultural crux point. He thinks 1998 was the pivot year when Hollywood shifted toward heavy programming, citing The Truman Show, Deep Impact, Armageddon, and The Siege all landing in the same window. The guys dig into Bulworth's opening confession that political assassinations are just a normal Tuesday for a senator with a fixer on speed dial, the eerie parallel between Bulworth dropping the mask once he had a hit out on himself and the way Trump later dispensed with the political pretense entirely, and Aaron Sorkin's fingerprints on the worst Halle Berry monologues about NAFTA and manufacturing. They also wander through the rise of West Coast rap as a marketing tool aimed at young kids, Public Enemy's 1994 song calling out a fake World Health Organization pandemic, the hierarchy of corporate political influence, and the difference between memory and story.

Deep Impact | Apocalyptic Movie Hour

In the summer of 1998, Hollywood delivered two versions of the apocalypse within eight weeks of each other, and the story of how that happened is almost as dramatic as either film.Deep Impact, directed by Mimi Leder and released on 8th May, had been in development since the late 1970s, tracing its origins to producers Richard Zanuck and David Brown's desire to remake the 1951 sci-fi film When Worlds Collide. The project was ultimately merged with Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke's The Hammer of God, before Spielberg, occupied with Amistad, handed the director's chair to Leder.What emerged was a deliberately restrained disaster film, one less interested in the mechanics of impact than in the texture of grief: how ordinary people, politicians, astronauts, and estranged families face the end with or without dignity. With scientific consultants including comet co-discoverers Carolyn and Gene Shoemaker, and ILM's groundbreaking digital tsunami, the film earned genuine respect from the astronomical community and grossed a respectable $349 million worldwide on an $80 million budget.Armageddon, released on 1st July under Disney's Touchstone Pictures banner, was a different creature entirely, and was, by most accounts, a direct competitive response to Deep Impact.Michael Bay's film was shot in just sixteen weeks, with unprecedented government and military access, under enormous studio pressure. Where Deep Impact depicted skilled astronomers, Armageddon hired oil drillers and sent them to space. Where Leder's film earned praise for plausibility, Bay's is famously scientifically inaccurate in many ways. Despite this, Armageddon grossed $553 million worldwide, topped the year's global box office, eventually received a Criterion Collection release and four Oscar nominations. Deep Impact did not.Both hinge on sacrifice, on families torn apart by cosmic indifference, on the question of who gets saved and who doesn't. Both were shaped by real cosmic events, which shook the scientific community and governments into action and Hollywood into a race to dramatise the unthinkable. Richard Litt's entry into the Sydney training ranks materialised under very sad circumstances. He'd barely settled into a training partnership at Warwick Farm with his father Jim when news came from NZ of the premature death of his older brother Jay. Jim Litt made an immediate decision to return to NZ but resolved to leave his small team of horses in Sydney.  Richard was quickly granted a training licence by Racing NSW and launched his training career under less than ideal circumstances. Some months later he paid his first visit to the winner's circle when a mare called Klissta won the Braidwood Cup. As Richard gratefully received the Cup trophy he couldn't have imagined that just two years later he'd be on the dais at Royal Randwick receiving the trainer's trophy after the Gr 1 Champagne Stakes.   That  trophy was won by Castelvecchio, the Dundeel colt who'd catapulted Richard Litt to racing's biggest stage. He joins us on the podcast to talk about his first magical decade in Australian racing.  He talks about an encouraging first half of the current season and his expectations  for the promising Caffe Florian. The trainer looks back on early Sydny stints with trainers like Graham Rogerson, Bart Cummings and John O'Shea.  Richard looks back on his father's decision to try his luck in Sydney with a small team of NZ horses. He remembers the impact of his brother's sudden death in Hawera. Richard says he won't forget the thrill of his Braidwood Cup win in 2017. He looks back on the thrill of landing his first city win albeit a midweek event. His first Saturday metro win was another special occasion. Richard reflects on the luck he's had with a string of online purchases from the Godolphin operation. The trainer shares the story about the beginning of his association with owners Ottavio and Wendy Galletta. He was given the formidable task of winning a race or two with a horse previously trained by Chris Waller.  Richard says he was surprised and delighted when Ottavio and Wendy gave him their new Dundeel colt to train. Castelvecchio began with a flourish by winning first up at  Canterbury before repeating the dose in spectacular fashion in the Inglis Millenium. He looks back on Castelvecchio's wins in the Champagne Stakes and Rosehill Guineas and his stunning second in the Cox Plate. Richard looks back on a monumental disappointment when Castelvecchio was brought undone on a very heavy track in the ATC Derby. The trainer was humbled when the Gallettas gave him the job of training the $1.9 million colt known as Profondo. Richard talks about the highs and lows of the Deep Impact colt's short career. He talks of Ottavio's acquisition of the Victory Lodge training stables at Warwick Farm, formerly home to several Gr 1 winners trained by Clarrie Conners. Richard acknowledges a few more handy winners for the stable in recent years.
