We can't all be better than average – there just isn't room at the top for everyone.Striving for the top is a nice idea, but the other side of it is: if we become anything other than ordinary, we feel that we have failed somehow. This goal-orientated outlook is widespread. But, is it really important to be remembered as a high achiever or 'Champion'? Isn't it more important to be a kind, caring individual who treats his friends and family well? It seems everything is moving online these days, so it's perhaps no surprise that kids TV is too. CITV, ITV's children's channel, is no longer; it's moving to the company's streaming service, ITVx. Its BBC equivalent, CBBC, is expected to also be online-only in the next few years. Many children now, though, just go to YouTube to watch their shows. But with an ongoing decrease in funding for kids' TV and the move to the less regulated streaming platforms there are concerns about the impact the quality of programmes and online safety. On the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson explores the issue with former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq, and Jon Hancock, who's company Three Arrows Media makes shows for Sky Kids and BBC Childrens. If you like your arts and entertainment, why not subscribe to the Backstage podcast? And, if you're a parent, you can find Sky's ad-free, 24-hour Sky Kids channel on Sky Q, Stream, Glass, and NOW.Podcast producer: David Chipakupaku Interviews producer: Melissa Tutesigensi Senior podcast producer: Annie Joyce Editor: Wendy Parker

Konnie Huq is a presenter and writer and a mum of two boys aged 8 and 10. She was also the longest serving female presenter of Blue Peter from 1997 to 2008. The Blue Peter link makes us feel like we are almost related. Like my mum, Konnie loved her time on Blue Peter and time flew because she found every day on the programme was so fun and different. We talked about how she and Charlie Brooker got married within 9 months of getting together, how different her two boys are from one another, and how she finds joy in simple things. Konnie and I talked about her children's books about a character called Cookie Haque (hmm, now who could that be based on?) which she writes in chunks on her phone. We also mused on the high expectations people have of parenting these days, when both of us remember long periods waiting in the car while our parents shopped or did errands. And how unthinkable that would be now, when it's all bathtime and bedtime and fitting around the children instead!Towards the end of our chat we got quite deep and philosophical about the influences in childhood which go on to make the adult. Konnie recognises the little things that her mum taught her as a child that are now very much part of her make up - not wasting food being an important principle which her parents brought with them when they moved to the UK from Bangladesh in the 60s.So, I hope your ears are feeling agile today because Konnie is lively and lovely and has a brain which will take you on some wonderful tangents! Enjoy!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis Bextor, it is produced by Claire Jones and post-production is by Richard Jones. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Luckily, science-mad Cookie realises that her coding lessons at school might help her crack the language code and help her bond with Nani. Other mysteries are harder to solve, though – like, why is Jake's mum acting so weird? Who is the mystery gamer who keeps levelling-up in Cookie's computer game? And who is the Woodburn Hacker, who keeps posting teachers' secrets on the school website? Why does it look like it might be Cookie herself? So – pinch me. If you'd told eight-year-old me that I'd one day get to interview 'Blue Peter' presenter Konnie Huq when I grew up, it would have been way too exciting to process. As it happens, 28-year-old me managed to keep it together (just about) in order to interview the lovely presenter-turned-children's author about alone time, finding genuine happiness away from the spotlight and why she's never, ever felt lonely. Thanks to a social-distancing friendly video chat, I also got to meet Huxley, the youngest of Konnie's adorable sons (she has two under the age of nine with her husband, 'Black Mirror' creator Charlie Brooker). Huxley makes his cameo right at the end of the episode, turning out to be the unexpected star of the show and also proving Konnie's assertion that she gets ZERO alone time as the mother of two young children.Konnie's latest book, Cookie and the Most Annoying Girl in the World, is available now from Amazon and from all good booksellers. Visuel © Black Mirror S1E2, Quinze millions de mérites, de Charlie Brooker et Konnie Huq (2011) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Charlie Brooker is a satirist, broadcaster and writer. He created the Emmy-award winning series, Black Mirror, and presents Screenwipe and Newswipe which won Best Comedy Entertainment Show award at the British Comedy Awards in 2011. Born in 1971, his career has been influenced both by his early love of technology - he was a keen computer gamer - and by his passion for the anarchic, surreal and experimental comedy of Monty Python and The Young Ones. After creating his own comic while at school, he went on to provide cartoons for the magazine Oink! at the age of 15. He cultivated his acerbic style and satirical pessimism as a writer of games reviews and features for PC Zone magazine. His online creation TVGoHome, an often caustic parody of television listings in the style of Radio Times, brought him to the attention of the Guardian newspaper where he began writing a TV review column entitled Screen Burn in 2000. This was adapted into a BBC Four television series, and various spin-offs, including Gameswipe and Newswipe, followed. The first two series of Black Mirror, an anthology of unrelated dramas focused around the unexpected consequences of new technologies, aired on Channel 4. The third series was released on Netflix in 2016, followed by a fourth at the end of 2017. Charlie is married to former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq and they have two young sons.Presenter: Kirsty Young Producer: Cathy Drysdale.
TV presenter, Konnie Huq's choice is Hangover Square by Patrick Hamilton, a dark novel of seedy low-life set in 1930's Earls Court. Hue & Cry pop singer Pat Kane's is a treatise on work and the joy of simply making something, The Craftsman by Richard Sennett. Presenter Harriett Gilbert chooses a disturbing but compelling satire on how far modern parents will go to protect their children, even after they have committed a terrible crime - The Dinner by Herman Koch.
