In the Season 6 premiere of Eat Sleep Wine Repeat, Janina is joined by Sunny Hodge, founder of Diogenes the Dog wine bar in London and author of The Cynic's Guide to Wine (use code EATSLEEP15 for 15% off this book and all Academie du Vin books). Known for shaking up traditional wine education, Sunny takes us on a journey into the science behind wine, from rootstocks and yeast strains to soils, sulphites and histamines. This episode dives deep into how low-intervention vs. natural wine is defined, what mouse taint and Brettanomyces really mean for your glass, and why the future of wine chat might balance both the romance of terroir and the hard facts of winemaking. Expect myth-busting, geeky insights, and plenty of food for thought on how wine is grown, made, and enjoyed. If you've ever wondered what truly changes your wine beyond the grape – from organic regulations in the EU vs. USA, to terpenes, esters, and thiols – this is an episode that will transform the way you understand every sip. A quick shout out to this episode's lovely sponsor Viavinum. I've got a special discount code that could earn up 5 or even 8% off your wine tour. Find details at the bottom.* You'll also discover: [05:51] – Why Sunny wrote The Cynic's Guide to Wine: moving beyond storytelling to answer the “whys” and “whats” of wine through science and real understanding. [09:04] – Diogenes the Dog: The Wine Bar in Elephant and Castle, London. [10:04] – Three places to expand your map: Texas (Malbec) from Messina Hof; Weightstone WE White No.4 from Taiwan; an organic project in Eastern Thrace, Turkey with Xavier Vignon. [12:27] – Hybrids/PIWI: bred for heat/humidity resilience to reduce spraying. [14:55] – Janina links her previous episode on Turkish wine for deeper context. [16:38] – The philosophy behind Aspen & Meursault: team training and a dedicated low-intervention concept. [18:15] – Low-intervention vs natural: how to define these wine terms with no legal definitions. [21:43] – Sulphur dioxide, alcohol and histamines: why hangovers aren't usually caused by sulphur dioxide — and when histamines might matter. [27:57] – Organic in Europe vs America: EU allows wines with reduced sulphur dioxide; US organic wine forbids added sulphur dioxide — changing how wines taste and age. [34:32] – Soil really matters: mycorrhizal “underground internet,” rootstocks, and how they nudge ripening, acidity, and vigor. [36:52] – From cellar to consumer: why better definitions and transparency help real-world wine choices. [42:11] – What are thiols? Setting up the chemistry behind those tropical fruit notes. [45:30] – Feeding vines: getting nitrogen without synthetic fertilisers (and a detour through Fritz Haber's legacy). [47:32] – Terpenes & esters: aroma families and where they come from [52:26] – Mouse taint: why it's more common in low-intervention wines and how it shows up. [56:15] – Brettanomyces: fault or character? Unpacking the sweaty-horse debate. [57:59] – What's next for Sunny? (Spoiler: more geeky wine chat) [60:04] – How to contact Sunny and where to buy The Cynic's Guide to Wine – Academie Du Vin Library (Don't forget to use code EATSLEEP15 for 15% of this book and all others on the site) *VIAVINUM WINE TOURS: If you're dreaming of a wine-filled escape to Italy, I've got something special for you. Book a customized wine tour of more than 6 days / 5 nights through my trusted travel partners and use my code EATSLEEPWINE to unlock an exclusive discount: 5% off for private groups of 2 to 5 people 8% off for groups of 6 or more Right now, the full range of private tours isn't live on the website as they're being refreshed for the new season — but if you're ready to plan something unforgettable, this is the perfect time to design your own bespoke wine adventure.

RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next of his regular audio described theatre reviews. This week we have the return of a much-missed detective icon from the small screen to the theatre stage with ‘Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts' with some twists and turns, red a few red herrings and some rye humour too at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre with description by Professional Audio describer Carolyn Smith. About ‘Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts' A chilling mystery unfolds when a young actress suddenly dies on stage during a performance, and Detective Chief Inspector Morse embarks on a gripping investigation. What begins as a suspicious death inquiry takes a darker turn when the legendary inspector, together with DS Lewis, uncovers a connection to sinister events in his own past, twenty-five years earlier. Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts marks the first-ever major stage adaptation of the iconic detective. ITV's long-running Inspector Morse, hailed by Radio Times as ‘The greatest British crime series of all time', has inspired equally beloved spin-offs, Lewis and Endeavour. Starring Tom Chambers (Father Brown, Strictly Come Dancing) as Inspector Morse, this original story written for the stage is a must-see for fans of compelling detective stories and thrilling mysteries. Presented by Birmingham Rep & Melting Pot. Based on characters by Colin Dexter. On 28 September 1923, a new magazine hit news-stands. The Radio Times was a BBC publication, born out of a listings ban seven months earlier, when the press tried to charge the Beeb advertising rates to print what was on. The BBC's General Manager John Reith saw an opportunity: they'd just print their own. We previously (on episodes 75 and 76) brought you the history of the Radio Times for its centenary, but as our moment-by-moment timeline of British broadcasting finally reaches September 1923, we just had to zoom in a little further on issue number one. So join us for a look at the first listings, the first letter (a listener from Spain!), ads including headphones and - oddly - height-lengthening, the first cartoon (about listening to the wireless en masse in a village hall), plus listeners complaints mourning the “murder” of composer Tannhauser at the hands of the London Wireless Orchestra. Everyone's a critic… Our guests include Radio Times editor Shem Law, Radio Times collector Dr Steve Arnold, Radio 4's Justin Webb and Dr Martin Cooper author of Radio's Legacy in Popular Culture. SHOWNOTES: Original music is by Will Farmer. Books referred to include Those Radio Times by Susan Briggs and The Radio Times Cover Story by Tony Currie. As the Downton Abbey franchise comes to an end after fifteen years, with the cinema release of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale this Friday, we discuss the enduring appeal of the upstairs-downstairs class-based period drama with the chatelaine of the 'real Downton', Highclere Castle, the Countess of Carnarvon, and with Caroline Frost of The Radio Times. Suede frontman Brett Anderson talks to us about the 21st century anxieties which have informed the renowned indie-rock band's new album, Antidepressants. Two medical professionals who've turned a razor-sharp scalpel to writing informed by their careers in the NHS: Adam Kay, the junior doctor-turned writer of the bestselling memoir This Is Going to Hurt, discusses writing his debut novel, A Particularly Nasty Case, a murder-mystery set in the corridors of a busy hospital. And nurse and playwright Uma Nada-Rajah talks about her tragicomic production Black Hole Sign which is set in an A+E department and which opens in Scotland this weekend.Plus we hear about a new initiative - launched today - which aims to develop filmmaking skills in children as young as 3 years old. Welcome along to Crushed by Margaret Cabourn-Smith; the podcast about unrequited love. This episode I talk to awesome writer and speaker POORNA BELL. I'm a big fan of hers and have been trying to track her down for a couple of years since I was too shy (I know) to approach her at Crushed alumnus Dolly Alderton's book launch. My persistence paid off and I loved talking to her and getting an advance copy of her excellent new novel This Is Fine which is out now and highly recommended. I love that instead of doing a reading from that, she read from her teenage diary. Thanks for downloading and supporting us. Welcome to Crushed by Margaret Cabourn-Smith; the podcast where funny people talk about unrequited love. Today's episode features excellent BAFTA winning composer JESSICA CURRY. Her album Shielding Songs is available now from jessicacurry.bandcamp.com. She's on insta @jessica_curry_ She's an extraordinary woman and I loved going through some of her mad crushes. I looked up the quote she mentioned, attributed to comic book artist Tim Kreider - "If we want the rewards of being loved, we have to submit to the mortification of being known." I might get it on a poncho. Thanks for downloading and supporting us. You're my people. Come and find us... The Bengal Famine is the forgotten story of the Second World War. Between 1943 and 1944, at least three million Indians, all of whom were British subjects, died from starvation or diseases linked to malnutrition. It is one of the darkest chapters in colonial history, yet the memory of those millions who perished is not broadly nurtured in Britain, India or Bangladesh. There is no memorial, museum, or archive dedicated to them anywhere in the world – not even a plaque. Who better to shed light on these untold stories than the award-winning journalist Kavita Puri? Described by The Radio Times as ‘our foremost chronicler of the lives of British South Asians,' Puri has received critical acclaim for her radio series and writing on Indian history. In March 2025 she joined author Sathnam Sanghera live on stage to uncover this tragic chapter of British and Indian history. Drawing on the themes of her hit podcast Three Million, Puri told the dramatic and complex story of British colonialism, Indian nationalism, global war and the end of empire, while challenging national mythologies, the prevailing British narrative of World War II, and what we understand a hero to be. Puri also discussed the extensive archival research that went into the making of the podcast, and the new discoveries uncovered by forensically piecing together the stories of eyewitnesses and survivors. ---- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more.
