Grab your chador and the cat because we're talking Ana Lily Amirpour's feature debut, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014). Joining us on the skateboard into Bad City is writer Abby Olcese, who appreciates the mood of this black and white Iranian Western vampire film. Plus: the Girl's moral code, the film's open ending, drug dealer decor, and why Arash is such a clingy sad boy. Questions? Comments? Snark? In episode 15 of (Pop) Cultural Marxism, Ajay, Isi, and Joseph explore vampires in media, across genre and time! Welcoming back Joseph after a few episodes away, the episode kicks off with a games roundtable on Monster Hunter: Wilds (Capcom, 2025) and Pentiment (Obsidian, 2022), among other things. Then the group quickly dives into all things vampire. From Capital to Castelvania, the conversation analyzes the psychosexual, political economic, Orientalist, literary, genre, social, and even epidemiological metaphors, allegories, and tropes that haunt vampire stories and have made the figure of the vampire of such perennial—if shifting—fascination. How have vampire stories changed over time? Why do vampire stories shift and blur genre and valence? Why is the vampire such a perennial stand-in, across so many fields, often at the same time? Objects in consideration include: Carmilla (Sheridan Le Fanu, 1872), Dracula (Bram Stoker, 1897), Interview with the Vampire (novel: Anne Rice, 1976; TV adaptation: Rolin Jones, 2022-present; film: Neil Jordan, 1994), The Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches (Anne Rice), Nosferatu (F.W. Munrau, 1922), Nosferatu (Robert Eggers, 2024), A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (Ana Lily Amirpour, 2014), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Joss Whedon, 1997-2003), Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Konami, 1997), Castlevania (anime, Warren Ellis, 1997-2021), Castlevania: Nocturne (anime, Clive Bradley, 2023-present), True Blood (TV series, Alan Ball, 2008-2014), The Twilight Saga (films 2008-2012, based on the novels by Stephanie Meyer), Midnight Mass, What We Do In The Shadows, and many more! Discover how the erotic, the economic, the exotic and even the epidemic all collide in the tragedies, comedies, horrors, nightmares, and fantasies that prove the vampire is a potent if changing symbol for fears, desires, and delirium.
After Nosferatu, we wanted to keep talking about vampires—but there were so many movies to pick from that, instead of choosing only one or two, we each brought a whole darn list. So enjoy as we discuss A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Daughters of Darkness, Thirst, Habit, The Addiction, My Heart Can't Beat Unless You Tell It To and all the other best offbeat vampires that movies have to offer.
Julius en Jasper bespreken hun favoriete vampierfilms aan de hand van een persoonlijke top vijf. Films die voorbij komen zijn onder andere: Nosferatu, The Lost Boys, The Vourdalak, Fright Night, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Daughters of Darkness, Brides of Dracula, Let the Right One In, The Hunger, Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat, Vampyr, What We Do in the Shadows en natuurlijk Dracula II: Ascension. _______________________________________ (00:00) Cold Opener & Intro (18:39) Nosferatu (53:02) Shadow Of The Vampire (01:04:46) A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (01:27:55) Thirst (01:46:18) Ausblick auf die nächste Folge (01:48:58) SPOILERTALK zu Nosferatu _______________________________________ Hier kannst du uns überall finden: iTunes/Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/2TgWvY3 Spotify: https://spoti.fi/34jfB68 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/JahierFilmePodcast RSS-Feed: https://jahierfilme.podcaster.de/ Instagram: @jahierfilme Linktree: https://linktr.ee/jahierfilme _______________________________________ Alle unsere Filme im Überblick: https://letterboxd.com/jahierfilme/lists/

What happens when women bring traditional folklore into the horror genre and subvert it? You get award-winning feature length films, Iranian vampires and Mayan werewolves to name a few examples. Ella Al-Shamahi is joined by Iranian-American filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour and Mexican filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero to discuss how to create horror on screen.Ana Lily Amirpour's award-winning debut feature film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, is a Persian-language Western-horror. It follows a skateboarding vampire who wears a chador and haunts the fictional Iranian ghost-town of Bad City. Feminist readings have interpreted the vampire as a vigilante who preys on men that disrespect women. Ana's later films have included big stars such as Kate Hudson, Suki Waterhouse, Jason Momoa and Keanu Reeves.Gigi Saul Guerrero is known by fans as La Muñeca Del Terror, which means The Horror Babe. She gained recognition for La Quinceañera, a horror series based on the Mexican traditional celebration of a girl's fifteenth birthday. Her film Culture Shock follows a Mexican woman who crosses the border into the US in hope of finding the American dream. What she finds instead is an American nightmare. Gigi's work often draws from Mesoamerican folklore and Mexican tradition. Producer: Elena Angelides(Image: Gigi Saul Guerrero. Credit: Luchagore Productions. And Ana Lily Amirpour. This episode we travel to Iran for a new vampire classic in the 2014 Persian language film “A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night” Don't let the title fool you, this film brings the unexpected. All in black and white, the horror follows the actions of a lonesome Vampire…..tune in to hear our mutual delight at this hidden gem
2014's A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT, written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, was promoted as The first Iranian Vampire Western, although when I have been describing it to people I've said it's the first Iranian Skateboarding Vampire Western. It's in black and white, all the dialogue is in Farsi, and there's a skateboarding vampire. Kevin and Mike talk about the film, artsy vampire movies, and spend more time than is probably necessary on a tangent about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Happy spooky season, y'all!

In the lonely town of Bad City, Iran, a young man working to pay off his father's debt to a local drug dealer encounters a mysterious girl who stalks the city at night, preying upon its oppressors. We discuss the mix of genres from spaghetti western to teen coming-of-age romance, how exciting a very slow scene can be, and how we wish there was even more skateboarding.00:00:00 - Intro 00:00:04 - Welcome and banter 00:03:16 - Spoiler free thoughts: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night 00:15:13 - Housekeeping 00:19:10 - Spoilers!! During the inter-season break, the vampire insiders are working hard to keep the podcast fresh by doing deep dives into the episodes, chatting about other kinds of creature media and exploring the "Fan Fiction Writer's Room" in which we, with the permission of the author, read and discuss an excerpt from some terrific fan fiction. In this episode we welcome guest film critic Matthew Snediker to the show to discuss the 2014 Film A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. We ran a little long in our very rich discussion with Matthew, so we were unable to include the fanfic segment this week. We will get back to that next week, we promise. hello listeners! first i come to you with news of The Lavender Menace match making service currently live on the Patreon! SINGLES/NON-MONOG ONLY!!! also butches please fill out the form... the numbers are in your favor right now.episode 15 of season 4 was filmed in december 2022 and is a part of the collection of Sunnaissance IRL video content. we respond to a hot take that references The Will to Change by bell hooks and the necessity of communicating with men. we return to the question of how to decenter men without falling into the fallacies of lesbian separatism (a really good question). then we respond to a hot take about bisexual people not having a slur and also the bi vs pan distinction when moving in online spaces.our shared media portion of the episode is the Céline Sciamma directed film Petite Maman (2022). we were very excited to talk about this movie because we got to watch it on the big screen together in a theater to ourselves. we find ourselves at the beautiful intersection of Sunny's love for speculative fiction and Renaissance's love for French Romanticism (psst... read Renaissance's Taylor Swift x Romanticism essay on substack). it should not be a surprise that our passions overlap in a movie about mother-daughter relationships. a classic motif of the reviewed content here.like usual, we end the episode recommending each other pieces of media. Renaissance recommends A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) directed by Ana Lily Amirpour. It is a contemporary Iranian noir vampire film with a proclivity for showing feminist acts of violence. (yay!!) Sunny references The Never Learn by Layne Fargo in response to the film. Sunny recommends the (FRENCH) graphic novel Thieves by Lucie Bryon. "It's kind of like Heartstopper if it was French and for girls" - Sunny describing the book.hope you enjoy this episode!PatreonTwitterYoutube
Plutember 2022 concludes with the The Psych Boys uniting to talk about performing hot dogs, vampire jewels, and the Baha Men of movies: A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night! Should the Girl have been included in Tony Hawk Underground? Is JP's stance that "cheese is overrated" absolutely insane? ALL THIS AND MORE in the final episode of the year! Don't miss out! AND LISTEN TO WE HEARD ABOUT PLUTO!!! Happy Holidays! SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: Here is the intermission video that I was talk about with the hot dog that does tricks, which I did incorrectly conflate with the "lets all go to the lobby" video by thinking it was another Fleischer toon. It's not, but it IS fun. ----more----PLUS: Check out the BLHHiP Patreon to get early access to episodes, bonus episodes, discord access and more! Most recent bonuses include a spotlight on Human Centipede 2 with Nate Kiley, another on Basket Case 3 with Taylor Moore, and December's is a huge ep on The Last of Us Part II with Kevin Bartelt!

Long time friend Danny joins Caitlin to cover 2014's A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. It's a feminist favorite, and it uses vampirism to explore addiction and subversion. It also has a killer soundtrack. Who wouldn't love a black-and-white movie about a chador-wearing, skateboarding vampire who stalks bad guys and plays good music? We also talk about what's going on Iran currently, and we have a lot of fun with the fan-submitted questions. Thanks, as always, for sending those in!
Ondi Timoner ("We Live in Public") returns to Filmwax for her second visit to talk about her latest documentary, a highly personal film to say the least, called "Last Flight Home". Behind a white picket fence, on an unremarkable suburban street, we discover Eli Timoner, who founded Air Florida, the fastest growing airline in the world in the 1970's. During his final days, we discover his extraordinary life filled with incredible success and devastating setbacks, and most importantly, an innate goodness which won him the enduring love and support of his family. Through stunning verité footage recorded by his middle child, "Last Flight Home" takes audiences on a heart-wrenching ride through Timoner's life, illustrating a modern day success story built on the power of human connection. The film is currently screening at the IFC Center in NYC. It will begin its Los Angeles theatrical at the Laemmle Monica Center on Friday, October 14th. Then it will stream on Paramount+ as of November. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhIF7DHF9zc&t=36s Ana Lily Amirpour ("A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night") returns to Filmwax for her second visit (!) after several years to discuss her new thrill ride of a film, "Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon" which is now out in theaters. Kate Hudson and Jun Jong Seo star in this mind-bending thriller from visionary director Amirpour. When a struggling single-mother (Hudson) befriends a mysterious mental institute escapee with supernatural powers (Jong Seo), she sees a lucrative opportunity to make some fast cash. But when they draw the attention of a detective (Craig Robinson), their luck starts to run out as the cops close in on their crime-spree. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4Kkq7CbmnI&t=280s
