Le lundi 12 janvier, vers 16h30, Alain Orsoni est assassiné dans le village de Vero, en Corse-du-sud. Son assassin n'a tiré qu'une balle et l'a atteint dans la région du cœur. L'ex-dirigeant nationaliste était exilé depuis plusieurs années en Amérique centrale et ne venait que très rarement en Corse. En ce début du mois de janvier, il était sur son île natale pour assister aux obsèques de sa mère.Alain Orsoni épouse la cause nationaliste corse dans les années 1970 et s'engage au sein du FLNC, le Front de libération nationale de la Corse. Dans les années 1990, il fonde son propre mouvement, le Mouvement pour l'autodétermination (MPA), que ses détracteurs ne tardent pas à surnommer le « Mouvement pour les affaires ». Il quitte la Corse en 1996, en pleine guerre fratricide entre mouvements nationalistes, et s'exile en Amérique centrale. En 2008, il se réinstalle à Ajaccio et il est la cible d'une tentative d'assassinat.
