In this episode of Retro Titans, Phil sits down with Sam Dyer, founder of Bitmap Books — the publisher behind some of the most beautifully crafted retro gaming books ever produced. From the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum to the NeoGeo and N64, Bitmap Books has become synonymous with premium retro gaming preservation, celebrating the art, culture and history of the games we grew up with. But Sam's journey started much like many of ours — with a beige computer under the TV and a lifelong fascination with games. Together, Phil and Sam explore how nostalgia, graphic design and a love of gaming history combined to create one of the most respected retro gaming publishers in the world today. In this episode, we explore: 1️⃣ The origins of Bitmap Books How a passion project inspired by the Commodore 64 grew into a globally recognised retro gaming publisher. 2️⃣ Designing books for retro fans Why presentation, print quality and visual storytelling matter just as much as the words on the page. 3️⃣ Preserving gaming history From arcade classics and point-and-click adventures to SNK and Neo Geo, Sam explains why these games deserve to be documented and celebrated. 4️⃣ Nostalgia, community and modern retro culture Why retro gaming continues to resonate with new generations, and how the meaning of "retro" keeps evolving. Sam also shares stories about launching books through Kickstarter, working with legendary developers and publishers, creating collector's editions with built-in sound effects, and why games like Sensible Soccer, Monkey Island and Metal Slug still matter today.

This week, we're joined by Stuart Cox, artist at the legendary Midland studio Gargoyle Games, for a brilliant trip through the golden age of British 8-bit development. Stuart shares how he went from the Dragon 32 and early arcade obsessions to working on Scooby-Doo, Light Force, Shockway Rider, Hydrofool, ThunderCats and more, with stories of rapid-fire development, clever tricks to push the ZX Spectrum, digitised graphics, Rob Hubbard's incredible turnaround times, the truth behind the “Wolf” and “Samurai Dawn” confusion, and even the lost ThunderCats NES port. A proper behind-the-scenes look at one of the UK's most fascinating 1980s game studios.Stuart's current project: https://www.wireadmin.comContents:00:00 – The Week's Retro News Stories50:41 – Gargoyle Games InterviewPlease visit our amazing sponsors and help to support the show:Bitmap Books – https://www.bitmapbooks.comCheck out PCBWay at https://pcbway.com for all your PCB needsWe need your help to ensure the future of the podcast, if you'd like to help us with running costs, equipment and hosting, please consider supporting us on Patreon:https://theretrohour.com/support/https://www.patreon.com/retrohourJoin our Discord channel: https://discord.gg/GQw8qp8Website: http://theretrohour.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theretrohour/X: https://twitter.com/retrohourukInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/retrohouruk/Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/theretrohour.comTwitch: https://www.twitch.tv/theretrohourShow notesA1200 Delayed: https://tinyurl.com/yfzd3wddTomb Raider Side-Scroller: https://tinyurl.com/msn72sabTomb Raider On N64: https://tinyurl.com/bdfz8zdsC64 And Spectrum Handhelds: https://tinyurl.com/mwv2bj88Zapped To The Past: https://tinyurl.com/2rvzth58Cancelled Simpsons Game Revealed: https://tinyurl.com/4444m3aaAsk.com Shuts Down: https://tinyurl.com/mr467ybyResident Evil Teaser Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJPu1spHqfk
Photo by Shannon Potter on Unsplash Published 4 May 2026 e552 with Andy, Michael and Michael – stories and discussion on AI, life on Mars, life of the Vision Pro, retro C64s and a whole lot more! Andy, Michael and Michael get things started with a brace of AI articles dealing with with a wide variety of topics. First up is Meta's use of employee activities on their corporate computers to train their AI models. Then, a discussion on the SpaceX and Cursor business deal. Next, a conversation on a breach to access the Claude Mythos model. Interspersed with these is a discovery by NASA's Curiosity rover finding organic molecules on Mars. With a number of articles claiming, and paraphrasing here, that the Vision Pro is bereft of life, shuffled up its mortal coil and joined the choir invisible, Michael Rowe shares his perspective on the subject. His says his Vision Pro is not an Ex-Vision Pro. The cohosts go retro – as they are wont to do – with a flock of posts about all things Commodore. While no Artemis II image for this week's episode, do check out the minifigs.me offering of the crew, along with the jar of “Studella” in the links below. There are a couple of additional bonus links that the cohosts didn't have time to include in the episode that prove that we can have nice things. What is your quest? This week on GameBurst, the team covered a bumper week in gaming news — headlined by the news that Rebellion's post-apocalyptic British gem Atomfall is heading to television, with the Emmy-winning writers behind Fleabag attached to pen the series. It's a fitting creative match for a game that won Best British Game at this year's BAFTA Game Awards. Elsewhere, retro enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to: clamshell handhelds based on the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum are due in October at £109.99, complete with 25 built-in games and MicroSD expansion — with limited collector's editions bundled with reproduction issues of Crash and Zzap! magazine. RPG fans got a firm release date for Blood of the Dawnwalker — the dark fantasy debut from Witcher 3 veterans Rebel Wolves — confirmed for 3 September 2026 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, alongside ten minutes of atmospheric new gameplay footage. Nintendo's cinematic ambitions continue to grow, with Universal quietly confirming a third Nintendo and Illumination animated film for April 2028 — with a Donkey Kong spin-off widely speculated to be in the frame. In community news, Games Done Quick is heading to Europe for the first time, partnering with Gamescom in Cologne this August for a three-day charity speedrunning showcase benefiting Gaming for Democracy. Meanwhile, PlayStation Plus subscribers can claim EA Sports FC 26 and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers from the start of May — and Xbox Game Pass users will welcome price cuts, with Ultimate now dropping to $22.99 per month, though new Call of Duty titles will no longer be included at launch. Pick of the Week this episode, Taylor recommended the YouTube channel Spinosnack — worth a look for gaming content with a distinctive edge. Xbox is rethinking its identity under new gaming chief Asha Sharma, with exclusivity strategy and Game Pass pricing both under review. Retro fans, meanwhile, have cause to celebrate: Retro Games Limited has launched the Spectrum White Edition to mark 44 years since the original ZX Spectrum, priced at £129.99 at Argos. Ubisoft had better news to share too — Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is officially confirmed for 9 July 2026 — though the publisher also quietly axed Alterra, its Animal Crossing-inspired social sim, making it the seventh cancelled title of 2026. Nintendo revealed Splatoon Raiders for Switch 2, arriving 23 July, while Vampire Survivors studio Poncle confirmed 15 projects in development including new IP and licensed spin-offs. US hardware sales surged 69% year-on-year in March, largely on the back of the Switch 2's continued dominance. On Pick of the Week, Gary brought board game double-header Clans of Caledonia and Industria to the table, Jerome spotlighted Aether & Iron on PC, and the community weighed in via BlueSky — shoutouts to Leaps and Bounds, a nine-generation console history book, plus praise for Murderbot and Twisted Metal as proof that adaptations can genuinely land. #gameburst
This week, we're joined by John Mathieson, the hardware designer best known as the father of the Atari Jaguar. John takes us through an extraordinary career that began at Sinclair Research on the ZX Spectrum, before moving through ambitious and often misunderstood projects including Loki, the Konix Multisystem, Atari's Panther and Jaguar, and later the Nuon. Along the way, he shares brilliant behind-the-scenes stories about working with Clive Sinclair, Jeff Minter and the Tramiel-era Atari team, and reflects on the technical ideas, challenges and missed opportunities behind some of gaming's most fascinating machines. We hear about his early days in QA at Sony Cambridge, working on classics like Medievil, Frogger and Primal, and hear behind-the-scenes stories from PlayStation's golden era, the launch of the PS2 and PS3. Alex also discusses developing 24: The Game, contributing to God of War 3, and bringing his experience to Diablo 3, along with insights into how games were really made during the 90s and early 2000s—and how a simple fanzine helped launch his career. Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time is musician and writer Garreth Hirons, who's sitting through the loading screen waiting for any sign of Copper Blue by Sugar, the Crusader Nuts advert, The Hobbit on the ZX Spectrum, Too Sussed? by These Animal Men, Spring 1994 EP by S*M*A*S*H and Ghoulies Horror Bar. Along the way we'll be querying why ZX Spectrum games with 'Way Of' in the title refused to load, catching up on Season Four of The Weird Butcher Man That Comes And Stands Next To You At The Bar, debating whether the New Wave Of New Wave could have been saved by selling more trousers, revealing how Brett Anderson disqualified himself from appearing on compilations and - of course - trying to attack Thorin with the Trolls' Path.Garreth has also appeared on Looks Unfamiliar talking about The Bigger The God, Food Fighters, Saboteur, The Triangle Of Terror, Sizzlin' Bacon Monster Munch, and Fun At The Funeral Parlour here, The Yellow Album by The Simpsons, the Frankie Goes To Hollywood computer game, Sweet 75, Linc's, Transformers 'Action Masters', The Way Of The Tiger and Quatro here, The Ghosts Of Oxford Street here and the Futurama Christmas Specials here. The show kicks off with a number of gaming topics, discussing what the hosts have been playing lately, including the results of the Steam Replay for 2025. There’s also a chat about Commodore (joysticks, and the new Commodore 64 Ultimate), ZX Spectrum, and other retro machines. Netflix has been making acquisitions in the gaming space, where will they lead? Michael is fascinated by the process of restoring old paintings; Andy and Ian have seen a lot more of this on TV in the UK! In the wrap, the hosts cover an incident of apparent smart glasses-induced rage on the subway; and briefly talk about what’s coming into the Public Domain on January 1st 2026. 1990 erscheint mit Smash TV eines der lautesten, brutalsten und zugleich cleversten Arcade-Spiele seiner Zeit. Thema: Smash TV Erscheinungstermin: 1990 (Arcade) Plattform: Arcade (Williams/Midway); spätere Umsetzungen für NES, SNES, Mega Drive/Genesis, Master System, Game Gear, Amiga, ZX Spectrum u.a.
