In the passage for this week Paul quotes from Isaiah to explain that God doesn't honor what the world honors. He calls those who are weak and inconsequential. And the reason He does that is because it shows how foolish man's wisdom is. The place where God has supremely destroyed all human arrogance and pretension is the cross.

"What is unique about the death of Christ – and what makes the Crucifixion so definitional to our faith – is not that another heroic martyr has died. Rather, what makes the Crucifixion of Christ unique is the claim (which I affirm) that on the Cross it is the fullness of God who dies – not just God’s spokesperson or representative or proxy or Spirit or shadow or even simple human Son; rather, it is God’s own self who is put to death by a combination of civil and religious authorities in a way that is brutal, shameful, public, and painful." The Cross

On this 100th anniversary of the armistice, the question I would like to address today – more as a minister than a citizen – is this: Is there a theological reason to remember every year, those who have put their lives on the line? Rev. Dr. Larry Hayward preaches on this Remembrance Sunday from 1 Corinthians 1:18-25. This sermon was preached at the 8:30 a.m. service.

The division in Corinth was severe so Paul calls them back to what is of primary importance. Paul deals with the division by pointing the people to Jesus and calls them to unify around the Gospel. This leads to Paul’s exposition on the power of the Gospel. One of the things to note as you read this passage is Paul’s comparison of the world and God. Paul explains that God’s wisdom and power is greater than the world’s power and wisdom. He explains that since God doesn’t necessarily do things in the way that we expect, then we see His wisdom and power in an unlikely place, the Gospel. So from this, the central truth I want you to remember is this: The Gospel exposes me to the power of God. There are three ways the power of the Gospel affects us.
