“In God We Trust” is printed on all American currency…paper and coin. We see it, we read it, but do we actually LIVE by it? Trusting money can seem easier and more convenient, but it may not always lead us in the way that God directs in scripture. How do we differentiate trusting God vs Trusting the almighty dollar, and what is the difference between the two? Money offers us something, but God offers us something else!

In this lesser-known parable, Jesus teaches us two main truths - that Christians should make the most of what has been entrusted to them until the Lord returns and to reject the King invites judgment.

It can be hard to know what to do when we are awaiting upon the return of another. Patience can be difficult to come by. What do we do to pass the time? What is our purpose in the time of waiting? Jesus knew that He would be gone for awhile and He wanted His followers for be informed and prepared for the time when He would not be with them. We are now living in that gap of time that Jesus was talking about. Our parable from the book of Luke this week teaches us that we have been entrusted with a very important task while we are waiting on Jesus' return. It is vital that we take this call seriously as we will have to account for our time here in the waiting. Listen in to this week's sermon as we are challenged to "Go and Do Likewise" with what we have been given.

Jesus' parable not only covered the upcoming week but two thousand years into the future and what we are to be doing in-between. It was prophetic and challenging. It gives us our purpose for today and vision for our future.

The Lord of the Rings. A Tale of Two Cities. Star Wars. Our culture knows the power of a good story. Stories have a unique ability to capture our attention. More than that, they have a way of capturing our hearts. They can entertain us. They can teach us. They can even mess with our emotions. A good story lingers long after the tale has been finished. The Good Samaritan. The Rich Man and Lazarus. The Prodigal Son. Jesus, too, knew the power of a good story. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus told dozens of short stories, commonly referred to as parables. Though they were told thousands of years ago, they remain some of the most powerful and memorable stories known to man. In these stories, Jesus gave us a glimpse of ultimate reality. The parables teach us not only about who we are, but also about who God is. From July 30th through September 3rd, we'll be on a journey through the parables recorded in the Gospel of Luke. Join us as we encounter the parables with new eyes, looking for how these ancient stories can speak into our modern-day lives. No one can deny the power of a good story. It’s time we discovered the different a great story can make! Selected Quotes: "Here’s the question we need to ask ourselves as a church – the question we need to ask ourselves as Christians: What do the things we’re doing say about what we believe? What do our actions say about our convictions?” "We need to be Kingdom-Minded because we ought to be King-Minded. We ought to live everyday with the knowledge that Jesus is King.” “The day is coming when the King will return. The day is coming where you have to stand before Him. What will He say on that day? It won’t matter if you were successful. It won’t matter if you were wealthy. All that will matter is that you were faithful. What kind of servant will you be?"

Christ calls us to “do business”, and doing business is summed up in the lifestyle of a Generous steward. Generous stewards are called to faithfully manage all of their time, talent, and treasure as resources for God’s purposes.

What was Jesus’s core message? All of the first-century biographers agree. It was very simple, and he said it over and over again: “The kingdom of heaven has come near” (Mark 1:15). Most of us are confused about that. When we think of ‘heaven’ we think of some other time, some other place. But not Jesus. He’s thinking about your life, right here, right now. Step into heaven. It’s right there in front of you. Step in and call others to join you. The question isn’t when or where; the question is ‘What is it?’ and ‘How do we dare?’ Jesus’s stories of the kingdom tell us what and how. They call us to act with great boldness because we have a great hope. In our text this week Jesus tells a parable - a story - to communicate the truth about His Kingdom. Jesus is the nobleman. The “slaves” (RSV) or “servants” (NIV) are Jesus’s followers. The “pounds” (RSV) or “minas” (NIV) or about three month’s wages are your God given gifts or talents. Have someone in your group summarize the bones of the parable. Do no leave out the judgment (both blessings and curses) that occur when the nobleman (Jesus) returns.

Pastor Neil, teaching on Luke 19:11-27, reminds us that, in life, more is entrusted to those who prove that they are able to invest resources wisely. Likewise, the servants of the Lord have been entrusted with resources and will receive rewards in His Kingdom in proportion to their faithfulness with the resources they have been given.

Using a challenging final verse in today's scripture passage, Dr. Sams educates us with historical background, showing us that the parable Jesus told was a mirror of current events, but with a "kingdom of heaven" twist. By using current events, Christ creates a new, profound layer of understanding. In this parable, Christ proves himself to be not a typical king. But what does that mean? Watch, and hear biblical truth about both judgment, and service. And don't miss Dr. Sams share a personal story about how a family risked their lives to serve his family.

Joining us this week is Ron Davis from our PAOC District Office. He continues to focus on our series for the month of May: Living Generously, but from a cultural perspective. North American culture promotes consumerism and at the same time, many studies have sought to prove that money cannot buy you happiness. Ron takes a closer look at the link between money and happiness and draws the conclusion that money can buy happiness - you just have to know where to shop!
