Por que Satanás costuma usar o dinheiro para nos afastar de Deus? Segundo Randy Alcorn, existe muito mais gente devota ao consumismo que ao Satanismo. Temos normalmente medo do Diabo, mas grande atração pelo dinheiro. In the days of the famous Fanny Crosby lived one lesser known hymn writer who wrote some of the most beloved hymns we still sing today. Her name may not garner the fanfare of some, but her words live on in our churches every Sunday when we open our hymnals to sing "When We All Get to Heaven," "More About Jesus," and many other soul-stirring songs! In this episode, Tracie and Abigail discuss the life of hymn writer Eliza Hewitt, who had all the excuses not to live a life to its fullest for the Lord. She did not let poor health stop her from putting pen to paper over and over to write words that we sing over one hundred years later. Learn about her passion for teaching Sunday School children and about the many other ways she found to serve Christ. Her story will help you consider when looking at your own service on this earth for God, "Will there be any stars in my crown?" In John 9:3, Jesus declares that a man's blindness was meant for the works of God to be displayed in him. Fanny Crosby's life echoed this very truth. Though blinded at just six weeks old due to a doctor's error, Fanny Crosby became one of the most prolific hymn writers in history. With over 8,000 hymns to her name, she didn't let her disability define her. Instead, she viewed her blindness as a divine appointment, using her gifts to compose songs that have inspired generations. Her story is a remarkable testament to the grace of God, showing us that our greatest limitations can become the platform for His greatest work. Join us as we explore the life and legacy of Fanny Crosby, a woman whose "Blessed Assurance" became the anthem of her unwavering faith in the Savior. Stephanie here! I have often found that, when I'm discouraged, or when I struggle to see things from the perspective that God might have on a situation, a relationship, maybe my own heart, I find it so useful to dig into Scripture and look at the stories of people in Scripture who may have experienced something similar. I also find that, beyond Scripture, it is useful to look at the lives of faithful men and women in history, saints who have really clung to God, and who have experienced so much of his goodness, his holiness, his beauty, his faithfulness, his kindness, his generosity. I love to spend time through biographies of these people of faith. I'm looking forward to meeting them in heaven and learning from them even more. Which means, I love when a new book comes out that invites me to do just that. And the book Portrait of God by Jack Mooring does just that. I'm welcoming Jack today. And he experienced the same thing that I'm describing to you. His book is a bit of a guidebook. It uses the stories of influential Christian figures like C.S. Lewis, Saint Augustine, Fanny Crosby, and so many more, to help us, believers, find stability in our faith amidst the chaos of this world. He and I chat about the fact that this world is pretty chaotic right now. This book and this conversation hope to be one of the tools that equips us in this ever-changing turbulent world we live in. Now, to recognize God's goodness in the midst of chaos, well, I know it can be challenging. Our faith can so often seem like a roller coaster as a result of that. Jack says, “I've learned that the Christian life is less about learning and more about remembering. I wrote this book to remind myself and the rest of us, forgetful people, that this is God whom we love and he really is who he says he is.” MORE ABOUT THE BOOK “PORTRAIT OF GOD In an ever-changing, often turbulent world, recognizing God's goodness can be challenging. Many Christians describe their faith as a rollercoaster, with seasons of feeling close to God and having a clear sense of His presence, and others where He seems distant. Author Jack Mooring experienced this personally, and by reflecting on and learning from the lives of the faithful men and women in history, he uncovered powerful reminders of God's unchanging truths. Mooring's new book, Portrait of God: Rediscovering the Attributes of God through the Stories of His People (David C Cook, August 6, 2024) serves as a guidebook, using the stories of influential Christian figures like C.S. Lewis and St. Augustine to help modern-day believers find stability in their faith amidst the chaos of the world. In Portrait of God, Mooring provides thought-provoking questions and a list of further readings about each faith leader, allowing readers to dig even deeper into the truths about the unchanging character of God. “I've learned that the Christian life is less about learning and more about remembering,” writes Mooring. “I grew up in a rich tradition of truth, but life's lies have often buried those true ideas about God. So I wrote this book to remind myself and the rest of us forgetful people that this God we love is really who He says He is. This book is an attempt to rediscover our wonder about who He is. For each attribute of God, I chose a person in church history who actually experienced that part of God's nature. The goal is that, as we hear the stories of these people, we can get a glimpse of God through their eyes.” Each chapter explores an attribute of God through a person in church history who radically experienced His nature, applying it as a brushstroke to our portrait. Readers will uncover: ● Faith: How an all-powerful God worked miracles in the life of Kathryn Kuhlman. ● Holiness: What Augustine of Hippo's life in a secular world teaches us about God. ● Compassion: How William and Catherine Booth's service to others radiated God's love. MORE ABOUT JACK MOORING Jack Mooring is a pastor, speaker, songwriter, and author. Beginning in ministry from an early age with his family, he and his brother went on to start the band LEELAND. Signing to Provident Music Group (A division of SONY BMG), the band released seven records, four of which received Grammy Nominations for “Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.” After touring full time and ministering around the world from 2005-2014, Jack left the band in order to pastor full time. For several years he served on the pastoral staff of two different churches before planting Celebration of Life Church: Nashville. Jack continues to make music as a songwriter signed with Integrity Music. As both a pastor and creative, Jack is passionate about communicating the gospel in a post-Christian culture. He resides in Franklin, TN with his wife Whitney and four children: Smith, Kate, Anthony, and Gabriel. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Monday morning, the 26th of August, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to the Book of Acts 6:15: “And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him (that was Stephen), saw his face as the face of an angel.” You and I need to tell our story. Stephen was waiting on the tables. He wasn't one of the apostles and yet he told his story. That story led to his death actually. They eventually stoned him, but the man who orchestrated the stoning - yes, Saul of Tarsus, because of that testimony, became the greatest of all the apostles when his eyes were open and he realised what he had done. We need to tell our story. When was the last time you told somebody about how you met Jesus Christ? Yes, it could make you very unpopular, it cost Stephen his life, but I want to tell you, there is no power greater than personal testimony. We need to tell our story. Now, Fanny Crosby lived 100 years ago plus, and at 6 weeks old she went blind, but she became one of the greatest of all hymn writers, and probably her most famous hymn was the one, “Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine”. I want you and I to sing it together this morning and then maybe we could go out today and tell somebody our story. You say, “But I am not a preacher.” No, Stephen wasn't either! He was a waiter, he waited on the tables. It goes like this:Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!Heir of salvation, purchase of God,Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.Perfect submission, all is at rest,I in my Saviour am happy and blest,Watching and waiting, looking above,Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. This is my story, this is my song,Praising my Saviour all the day long; This is my story, this is my song,Praising my Saviour all the day long.Go out today and tell your story, Jesus bless you and goodbye.

This is message 20 in the Seven Churches of Revelation. Revelation 3:7-13 The Philadelphia church age, covering the years 1700 to 1900, was a dynamic period marked by a surge in missions work and spiritual revival. This era witnessed the influential efforts of the Moravians, who pioneered the mordern missionary movement under the leaders like Count Nicholas von Zinzendorf. Their global missionary activities were complemented by spiritual awakenings across Europe and America, notable through figures like John and Charles Wesley and the impactful preaching of George Whitfield and Jonathan Edwards. This period also saw the rise of significant cult movements as a counterforce, challenging the orthodoxy of the expanding Christian faith. Francis was just 6 weeks old when she became ill in the spring of 1820. The family doctor was out of town, and a charlatan pretending to be a doctor prescribed a treatment that rendered the baby completely blind, although she recovered from the initial illness. A few months later, her father died, and her mother went to work as a maid to support the family. She was raised by her grandmother, a devoted Christian who taught her granddaughter from the Bible. At the age of 8, the little girl wrote this poem: “Oh, what a happy soul I am, Although I cannot see! I am resolved that in this world Contented I will be.” The little girl was encouraged to work to the best of her abilities, and not to view herself as limited by blindness. She carried that resourceful attitude throughout her 94 years of living, and during her lifetime penned over 9,000 hymns. You may not have heard of Fanny Crosby, but if you've ever sung or listened to favorite hymns in church, chances are you've heard her music. She poured out her heart writing hymns, many of which are still sung today, nearly 200 years after her birth. Songs such as “Blessed Assurance” and “To God be the Glory” are treasured classics in many denominations. This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long. Fanny Crosby was struck blind as an infant, but she allowed the Lord to shape her story, and used her talents to praise Him, and inspire others to do the same. Let's pray. Lord, the story of Fanny Crosby is an encouraging reminder to rely on you, no matter our circumstances. You had a plan for her life from the very beginning, and the songs you wrote on her heart continue to inspire us today as we worship Your Holy Name. Thank you for writing Fanny's story so beautifully. In Jesus' name, amen. Change your shirt, and you can change the world! Contentment in life is hard to find. In fact, it's a secret most don't discover – but if Fanny Crosby can find it, so can YOU!
Award-winning author, journalist, and fellow podcaster Brian T. Kaylor joins Ken to talk about his soon-to-be-released (June 6, 2024) book, Baptizing America: How Mainline Protestants Helped Build Christian Nationalism. Brian adds a significant contribution to the discussion about the pervasive Christian Nationalism so prevalent today - the movement that became highly visible in the January 6th assault on our nation's Capitol. It's a little-discussed fact that the foundation for Christian Nationalism was laid by the “Seven Sisters” - the mainline denominations that far and away dominated the American religious scene before the explosion of evangelical denominations in the 1960s and 70s. Brian Kaylor asserts that despite its spurious claim, “Christian Nationalism isn't Christian.” Ken and Brian unpack this thesis and review his well-researched, compelling book. They discuss Robert Bellah's “Civil Religion” and the prescient warnings from Paul Tillich and H. Richard Niebuhr. Other topics include The National Prayer Breakfast, The Family, St. John's Episcopal Church (“The President's Church”), the National Cathedral, and traditional hymnology (including the prolific hymns written by Fanny Crosby). All of this has culminated in MAGA Trumpism and the complete takeover of the Republican Party. The American Flag and the Christian Flag have been standards in mainline denominational churches throughout out history - the Confederate Flag, too. Kaylor draws on Greg Boyd's Myth of a Christian Nation to underscore the vast difference between the biblical notion of the Kingdom of God and America as the New Israel. In this sermon by Pastor Carolyn, the focus is on the story of the blind man from the scripture passage who encounters Jesus and receives his sight. The sermon explores the significance of the event, emphasizing how Jesus noticed the man's suffering despite societal indifference. The Pharisees' reaction to the healing, focusing on Sabbath rules rather than the miracle itself, highlights their spiritual blindness. The sermon then transitions to a modern-day testimonial of a Muslim woman's encounter with Jesus, which transforms her hatred into love. Her story parallels the blind man's experience, illustrating the power of Jesus to heal spiritual blindness and change lives. Pastor Carolyn reflects on the deeper meaning of sight, drawing from the example of Fanny Crosby, a blind hymn writer who found spiritual insight despite her physical blindness. The sermon concludes with the assertion that spiritual sight is more profound than physical sight, and encountering Jesus can transform one's life, enabling them to see the world with new eyes.
