Jesus' teaching in this section of the Sermon on the Mount repeatedly emphasizes that the depraved state of the human heart keeps us from coming into God's presence. Likewise, the same depraved nature keeps us from genuine prayer. The only path to genuine prayer is the same path to genuine salvation. It is through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ himself that we can know how to pray. We are reminded in Psalm 34:45 that "The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears are open unto their cry." Since God's ears are open to only the cries of the righteous, it is then imperative for the heart of genuine prayer be that of righteousness. Faith in the atoning work of Jesus Christ is the only path to righteousness. Jesus emphasizes in this passage of scripture that the hypocrites pray with 'vain repetition.' But we must also admit that the faithful Christian can sill fall into this trap of vain words in prayer. When one prays in this manner, it is evidence of a lack of genuine faith that our Father in Heaven is actually listening much less will reply with an answer. Instead, Jesus calls upon the citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven to pray in such a way as faith directs the dependence upon God for the words and the heart necessary for genuine prayer.

At Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, our senior pastor continued in our Matthew sermon series, looking again in Matthew 6 at Jesus' teaching on prayer. (See sermons from First Week and Second Week.) Prayer is a byproduct of a right relationship with God. We must see our Heavenly Father rightly if we're to pray more.

Today we are starting a new sermon series pointed at deepening our knowledge of prayer, that we might be more faithful in prayer, and better understand the immense importance of our prayers. This series will look at several diverse types of prayer made by God's people both in the New and the Old Testaments; but before we look at those prayers, it is important that we understand correctly why we pray. We pray because God rewards the prayers of the humble in faith. Here we will look at five major words in that reason in some detail: God, rewards, the prayers, humble, faith.

God rewards prayers that are sincere, and there is no need to try to impress other people. God rewards prayers that are simple, and there is no need to try to impress God.
Why do you pray? When we only pray to 'get' from God we are exposing a selfish motive. In this passage, Jesus teaches us to avoid praying to serve our own selfish motives. He also exposes the vanity of repetitious prayers. "Dear Lord, thank you for the food, bless the hands that prepared it..." Do you mean what you say in prayer or are you just repeating what you have learned to say?
1 Phony prayer. 2 Pagan prayers. 3 Behind closed doors prayers.

Our approach to God in prayer must be true and trusting 1. Don't pray like the hypocrites; they're not true 2. Don't pray like the Gentiles; they're not trusting

God deeply values communication. It's the key to our relationship with him. Prayer is that line of communication. It's time spent with Him, alone, with no hindrances around you. Get into that secret place, grow your faith and your relationship.
