Is green hydrogen a ‘miracle fuel' or an expensive illusion? Can we decarbonize without it? And what happens when hydrogen hype meets hard economics? This week on Cleaning Up, Michael Liebreich debates Erik Rakhou, author of Touching Hydrogen Future, in a no-holds-barred discussion moderated by Andrew Critchlow of S&P Global Commodity Insights.Together, they contest one of the most contentious topics in energy today: hydrogen. Liebreich argues that hydrogen is plagued by physics-driven cost barriers and limited real-world applications, while Rakhou defends its potential as a critical tool for industrial decarbonization, energy resilience, and long-term security. From the potential of green vs. blue hydrogen, to global ammonia trade routes, Europe's pipeline ambitions, and China's hydrogen cost curve, this debate pulls no punches. Topics include:Whether there'll ever be a hydrogen-based economyWhy hydrogen economics remain so challengingThe role of carbon pricing vs. subsidiese-Fuels and hydrogen's place in transport, steel, and aviationWhy electrification trumps hydrogenThis episode was recorded at the S&P Global offices in London and originally broadcast as a S&P Global webinar on October 29, 2025. What if the energy transition isn't about sacrifice and belt-tightening, but abundance? Are electrified technologies ready to replace the polluting fossil fuel system we're so reliant on? And what will it mean for western nations if they can't keep up with China? In this special bonus episode of Cleaning Up, recorded live in Berlin, Michael Liebreich sits down with Kingsmill Bond, strategist at Ember, to unpack The Electrotech Revolution, a powerful new framing of the global shift from a fossil-fuel economy to an electrified, efficient, and inevitable clean energy system.Together, Kingsmill and Michael explore why the growth of solar and wind is now outpacing fossil fuels worldwide, how China's leadership is reshaping the global landscape, and what Europe and the US must do to compete. Only one hour tonight, but there's still a lot to unpack from yesterday's gambling investigation arrests. After hearing from Adam Silver earlier in the week, the NBA commissioner might've known this domino was going to drop and now has the task of fixing it. Then, only nine games in, but its getting dangerously close for the Bruins to pack everything in and start a new without Don Sweeney. And, with the World Series starting tonight, the game of baseball would benefit greatly from a repeat by the Dodgers.
This week on Everybody in the Pool, we're talking water — and the invisible pollutants hiding in it. Microfibers from textiles are one of the biggest sources of microplastics in our oceans, choking marine ecosystems and undermining the ocean's role as the planet's carbon sink. Our guest is Adam Root, founder and CEO of Matter, who shares his insane founder story, from £250 and a shed to a budding Japanese street food empire to Matter, which is helping major textile manufacturers keep millions of liters of water cleaner every day. It's an epic founder story with big implications for clean water and healthy oceans. We cover:How washing machines and textile factories shed microfibers at massive scaleWhy current filtration is wasteful — and how Matter's regenerative filters solve itThe founder story that went from Japanese street food stalls to the G7 stageWhat this means for oceans, sludge management (yes, really), and circular materials in the futureLinks:Matter Industries Website: https://matter.industries/Adam Root LinkedInAll episodes: https://www.everybodyinthepool.com/Subscribe to the Everybody in the Pool newsletter: https://www.mollywood.co/Become a member and get an ad-free version of the podcast: https://everybodyinthepool.supercast.com/What you can do to help:Please subscribe and tell your friends about Everybody in the Pool!Send feedback or become a sponsor! in@everybodyinthepool.com Hosted on Acast. Global shipping contributes about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to the total emissions of Japan or Germany. The sector, including its contribution to climate change, is governed by the International Maritime Organisation or the IMO, which is a UN agency based in London in the United Kingdom.Last week, the International Maritime Organisation gathered to vote on a proposal to reduce emissions from ships that had been agreed to in principle earlier this year. And ahead of the gathering, most people intimately involved in the process thought the proposal would pass. But that wasn't the case. The US stepped in at the last minute and pressured all those gathered to delay the vote on the proposal for another 12 months. This week on Cleaning Up, host Bryony Worthington sits down with Professor Tristan Smith, a leading expert on shipping decarbonisation from UCL Energy Institute, to unpack the dramatic events at the latest International Maritime Organization meeting — where the United States' last-minute intervention derailed a landmark vote on cutting emissions from ships.Together, they explore:How global shipping, responsible for around 3% of greenhouse gas emissions, became a critical test case for international climate policyWhy the IMO's proposed carbon intensity regulation could have marked the beginning of the end for oil and LNG as marine fuelsThe “Tariff diplomacy” and other threats that reshaped global negotiationsWhat this means for COP30 and other multilateral agreements.Bryony and Tristan also dive deep into possible solutions: from e-fuels, ammonia, and battery electrification to nuclear propulsion — weighing what's practical, what's political, and what's merely wishful thinking.Leadership Circle:Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. Somewhere between 140,000 and 390,000 abandoned hardrock mines are scattered throughout the West. Many have sat idle for decades, posing serious safety risks and polluting Western waterways. Last year, Congress took action on this issue by passing the Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines Act. The law launches a pilot program that allows for the cleanup of 15 mine sites without fear of liability — a landmark step to accelerate reclamation across the region. Western Governors have advocated for this legislation for decades, and WGA celebrated the bill's passage. Tune in to hear from Colorado Senator and former Governor John Hickenlooper as well as experts and organizations involved in cleaning up abandoned mines. They share why this legislation matters, how the pilot program will work, and what kinds of projects could finally move forward under its protections. In addition to Senator Hickenlooper, you'll hear from David Hockey, the Acting Director of EPA's Office of Mountains, Deserts, and Plains; Chris Wood, CEO of Trout Unlimited; and Rob Ghiglieri, Administrator of the Nevada Division of Minerals.

What does it take to rewire a nation's energy system? Can we make the grid cleaner, smarter, and more resilient — without driving up bills? And how will the explosion of AI data centres reshape the future of electricity demand? This week on Cleaning Up, host Michael Liebreich sits down with John Pettigrew, outgoing CEO of National Grid, for a candid conversation marking the end of his 35-year career. Together they explore the UK's £60 billion plan to deliver Clean Power by 2030, the race to build transmission for offshore wind, the growing strain from AI-driven electricity demand, and lessons from major outages in Spain and Heathrow.Pettigrew reflects on the evolving “energy trilemma” — balancing decarbonisation, reliability, and affordability — shares reflections from his 35-year career: what's changed, what went wrong, and what comes next for the grids powering our clean energy future.Leadership Circle:Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Arup, Cygnum Capital, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. Recently, I got a bill from Azure. That's not an unusual thing for many of you, but for me it was a surprise because it said I was late paying. I've had a number of services running, and I thought at first that I had left something running too long, like a VM. As I checked, most of the things were paused, even the expensive ones like a Synapse workspace. Instead, I found that my free credits were not being applied. Fortunately, I had changed credit cards or I might have been billed for a few months before I noticed. This was a change in how Microsoft managed benefits, which is fine. I opened a support call and someone helped me, but it took several days to get a response. I was slightly worried about the bills, so I decided to audit the things I had running. On this episode of the podcast, Shiloh Marx breaks down California's Election Integrity Initiative and the sweeping removal of more than 3 million inactive voters from the state's rolls. The June 30, 2024, EAC report revealed that the purged names were tied to out-of-state moves, deaths, and felony convictions, cutting the inactive voter total from 4.9 million to 2.8 million. Marx explains why accurate voter rolls are essential for public trust in elections and critiques the state's sluggish and error-prone process—especially since some removed voters still managed to cast ballots in 2024. He also previews ongoing efforts to eliminate another 320,000 ineligible names and the upcoming November 4 special election on redistricting.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
What does it take for India to deliver electricity to hundreds of millions while simultaneously building a fast-growing clean energy system? Can it overcome its fossil dependence to secure its energy futures with renewables? And how will India's development choices shape the global climate fight in the decades ahead?India, like China, is home to over a billion people, and is highly reliant on imported fossil fuels and domestic coal. But unlike China, it still has a very rural population and has not yet experienced the rapid rise in per capita energy consumption that accompanied China's recent development boom. The future path India takes to development is therefore of critical importance. In this episode of Cleaning Up, Bryony Worthington sits down with Dr. Arunabha Ghosh, founder and CEO of the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, and Special Envoy for COP30. Together they explore India's “twin transition”, achieving universal energy access while driving a massive expansion of clean power. From the data-driven electrification of 130 million households, to innovations in market design that slashed solar prices, to India's push for secure, diversified green supply chains, this conversation reveals a rarely told side of India's energy transition story.Arunabha also shares insights on India's role in international climate diplomacy, the significance of cooperation with China and Brazil, and the urgent need for hyper-local climate risk assessment to protect communities from extreme weather.Leadership Circle:Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. Today, Rev. Wendy Craig-Purcell shares about Integral Theory, “cleaning up” is the process of confronting the unconscious shadow—the parts of ourselves we've denied, rejected, or repressed. By bringing these wounds and limiting patterns into the light through practices like shadow work, therapy, and self-reflection, we stop projecting them onto others and take responsibility for our healing. This integration frees us to live with greater authenticity, wholeness, and spiritual depth, allowing our awakening to be grounded and complete.Website: http://www.theunitycenter.net Download Our New App: https://theunitycenter.churchcenter.com/setupAsk Yourself This: https://www.amazon.com/Ask-Yourself-This-Questions-Expand/dp/087159336XSubscribe to our YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/2hBqp7F Purchase Lesson Series Packages: https://theunitycenter.net/sunday-series-packagesListen to our Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6YJWcAhQUnkEHFqBXQmz1G

Is the future of clean energy and climate solutions brighter than we think? In this episode of Cleaning Up, Michael Liebreich welcomes back Hannah Ritchie — Deputy Editor at Our World in Data, researcher at the Oxford Martin School, and author of her new book, Clearing the Air.In Clearing the Air, Hannah tackles 50 of the most common myths and misconceptions about climate solutions, from “Isn't climate action too polarised and politically divisive to fix?” to “What happens when the wind doesn't blow?” and “Won't the world run out of minerals?” Hannah dives into the data behind renewables, electric cars, nuclear power, grids, and even lab-grown meat — cutting through the noise with clarity.Michael quizzes Hannah on why she wrote the book and what she hopes to achieve with it, and whether it has the potential to change the minds of climate skeptics. This conversation offers a grounded, accessible look at what really works, what doesn't, and why we should feel more hopeful than the doom-filled narratives suggest.Leadership Circle:Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Arup, Cygnum Capital, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. What happens when cheap solar flips the script on climate sceptics? Can pumped hydro really deliver the long-duration storage we need? And is “hope” a dangerous comforter in the race to net zero?In this season opener of Cleaning Up, Michael Liebreich sits down with Malcolm Turnbull — former Prime Minister of Australia, lawyer, statesman, energy investor, and climate champion. From leading Australia through fierce political battles over climate policy to now spearheading renewable projects through Turnbull Renewables, he offers a rare insider's perspective on the global clean energy transition.Turnbull and Liebreich explore the clash between optimism and realism in climate action: why cheap solar is reshaping politics, the promise and pitfalls of green hydrogen, and whether pumped hydro could be the long-duration storage solution the world needs. Along the way, they reflect on U.S. politics under Trump, trade negotiations without American leadership, and why “hope is not a strategy” when it comes to energy security.Leadership Circle: Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Arup, Cygnum Capital, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. Trump Doubles Down On Cleaning Up Chicago As Rampant Crime Captures Nation's Attention
You ever notice Democrats love to shout about transparency like it's their middle name? They'll slap it on their campaign signs, they'll tweet it like it's gospel. “Transparency, democracy, accountability.” And yet, when it comes to the Department of Justice looking at state voter data? Suddenly they're more private than a teenager's search history. Judges — Democrat-appointed, of course — are blocking their own states from sending voter information to the DOJ. Imagine that. The people who lecture us about protecting democracy don't even want the referees to check the replay.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Guest is former Assistant U.S. Attorney Zack Smith, current Heritage Senior Legal Fellow, to discuss the legality, necessity, and results of Pres. Trump's actions to remedy the crime problem in Washington, D.C. Classic film review of “The Untouchables,” the 1987 movie about federal agents sent to clean up Chicago's crime problems in the 1930s.
In part one of Red Eye Radio with Gary McNamara and Eric Harley, Marconi winning talk show host Dan Mandis fills in this week for Gary and Eric and begins by discussing the need for law and order in Chicago as the high crime rate is exacerbated with at least 54 people shot and seven fatalities over the Labor Day weekend alone and at a juncture when its mayor vowed to block President Trump's efforts to combat crime. Also Rosie O'Donnell apologizes after falsely claiming Minneapolis church shooter was Republican and MAGA supporter, RFK Jr. launches probe into what medications the Minneapolis shooter was on, companies like Playboy Publishing and In & Out Burger are moving their headquarters from California to Miami Beach and the ongoing effort to remove Gavin Newsom. Also rumors over the weekend from Democrats concerned about the whereabouts of President Trump, Jasmine Crockett's "street talk" and Hamas stealing humanitarian from Gaza aid and selling it on the black market. Who won? In the aftermath of battle, Ramesses and Muwattalli withdrew from Kadesh. We discuss the short- and long-term fallout and consider the "score card" for the respective armies. Then, we spend time with the wounded soldiers, using the Edwin Smith Papyrus to understand diagnoses and treatments used by ancient Egyptian physicians (swnw). Finally, we explore a curious hypothesis, suggesting that Ramesses practiced a form of "decimation" on his troops... On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, Ben Ferguson of the Ben Ferguson Podcast fills in for Mark. President Donald Trump is the law-and-order president. Crime in D.C. is out of control. Trump strategically uses D.C. to demonstrate rapid crime reduction via federal intervention, pressuring Democrat-run high-crime cities like Memphis, Chicago, St. Louis, and Baltimore—listed as America's most dangerous—to seek similar help. However, many mayors refuse due to Trump derangement syndrome. These Democrat-controlled cities could be transformed with proper law enforcement accountability and presence; they just have to ask Trump for help. Also, a top IRS lawyer, Anthony Sacco, was placed on administrative leave following a Daily Wire report highlighting his history of far-left advocacy, including calls to resist Trump and pack the Supreme Court. The Treasury Department is investigating as part of efforts to depoliticize the IRS, with Senator Tom Cotton calling for Sacco's immediate firing. Later, finally we have real justice. A NY appellate court has overturned a $500 million civil fraud penalty against Trump in a case brought by AG Letitia James. The court ruled the penalty was an excessive fine, violating the Eighth Amendment, which Mark Levin explained a year ago. Finally, the Trump administration is on track to deport over 400,000 undocumented immigrants in its first year. The big beautiful bill is enabling ICE to deport more illegal aliens and expand detention capacity with at least 50 new centers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
“How violent is DC?” asks Tim Young. “958 carjackings in 2023… 77% involved guns. The city needed Trump to step in to fix it.” The comedian and author says he was once robbed a gunpoint in the US capitol. “DC's clown mayor is a mess after Trump said he was taking over the policing of the city,” he says. “The fools of the city keep electing her to continue destroying it.” Kevin Sabet, PhD, is President/CEO of Smart Approaches to Marijuana, founded with Patrick Kennedy and David Frum.
