Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: Have you ever wondered why trauma seems to leave lasting marks on your mind, heart, and even relationships? In today's conversation, I sit down with Dr. J. Otis Ledbetter, author of Set Free, Released from the Damage of Trauma, to uncover how we can overcome the destructive effects of trauma and move towards God's peace and restoration. Drawing from scripture and real-life experiences, Dr. Ledbetter reveals how even biblical heroes wrestled with trauma and how we can learn from their stories to create tranquil paths of healing and wholeness. If you've been searching for hope after loss, abuse, crisis, or disappointment, this episode will encourage you that freedom is possible. Today, we're going to be talking about how to overcome the lasting damage of trauma through God's word. Quotables from the episode: Trauma is not the event. Trauma is the chronic reaction to that event. Trauma is ongoing. An event can happen and then it can be in your past. You may never forget it, but it no longer identifies you. And it no longer points the direction that you should go, whether life or death. The first emotion that somebody faces after a traumatic event is fear. Fear leads to anxiety. Anxiety leads to mood swings. Mood swings will lead you into isolation. Isolation brings the worst. It brings hopelessness. And it brings despair, and loss of purpose. The truth is what heals. God does not heal deceit. He heals truth. The one word for parents to pass a heritage to their children their faith, is intentionality. Just do something. Don't think it can be done by accident. Be intentional. The trauma of the unknown is, I think, the most garden variety trauma you can have. Don't leave out the spiritual because there is a God who loves you and he is a God of hope. God knows us so intimately that he knows what we need and willingly provides it. God says, come to me if you're heavy laden. I'll give you rest. He didn't say I'll rescue you. He's not going to rescue you. But he's going to give you a place of rest. Scripture References: Isaiah 61:1—“He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.” Psalm 40:2 (NIV) – “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” Joel 2:25 (ESV) – “I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten.” Recommended Resources: Set Free, Released from the Damage of Trauma by Dr. J. The Secret Place of the Bride
The secret place is more than private prayer. It is a spiritual location of protection, revelation, rest, and uncreated light. Leon du Preez reveals the architecture of the Seter, exposing how distraction, offense, spiritual dislocation, and dependence on the flesh pull believers from their true position in God. Through holy silence, absolute concealment, sacrifice, and spiritual sight, the believer learns to dwell under the shadow of the Almighty, recover sensitivity to the Spirit, and carry an atmosphere the enemy cannot penetrate. Return to the place where God becomes your refuge, your clarity, and your strength.
The secret place isn't a location. It's an invitation into a deeper relationship with God. As we explore Psalm 91 and Ezekiel 47, we'll discover how intimacy with Him grows when we choose to dwell in His presence and step deeper into the life He's calling us to live.

Today we are looking into the book of Job to discover if God makes bad things happen to our health. Is it Biblically accurate to trust that God made you sick, in order to teach you something? We chat today:-Does God's will automatically just happen for our health and life?-Can you mess up God's plan for your life?-How Christians use the word sovereign inaccurately -Some thing you can't believe it logically if you believe God gave you free will (which He did)-A famous Christian song I refuse to sing anymore -Things Job was rebuked for saying, that Christians still quote today and make into a harmful theology -Our responsibility in what happens to us-Why God isn't in control over our lives but rather in charge -The danger of creating doctrine about a single Bible verse-Why it's only going to temporarily comfort you to trust God caused bad things to happen for a reason-How God has decided to limit Himself-Does God cause miscarriages? Most believers visit God when life gets hard. They pray during a crisis. They open their Bible when they feel stuck. And then they wonder why the accusations still land. Psalm 91:1 does not say to visit the secret place. It says dwell there. And there is a legal difference between a visitor and a resident. A visitor has no standing. A resident has coverage. In this episode, Caren Williford reintroduces The Closet, a spiritual formation movement built on the theology of the secret place as a strategic headquarters. This is not only a program for people in crisis. It is for anyone serious about dwelling in God's presence as a daily reality, not a last resort. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE Why the secret place is a legal jurisdiction, not just a spiritual discipline The difference between visiting God and dwelling with God, and why it changes everything How Satan operates as a legal accuser in the courts of Heaven Why sincere, faithful, gifted believers still get taken out, and the one thing they were missing The witness protection framework and how it unlocks Psalm 91 and Matthew 6:6 What The Closet program is, who it is for, and what it produces in the people who go through it KEY SCRIPTURES Psalm 91:1 "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." Matthew 6:6 "But when you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your unseen Father. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." Revelation 12:10 "For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down." TOPICS COVERED IN THIS EPISODE What is the secret place in the Bible Psalm 91: meaning and the theology of dwelling Matthew 6:6 explained, more than a prayer tip How Satan operates as accuser in the courts of Heaven Spiritual warfare and legal covering in prayer The difference between spiritual information and spiritual formation Why good people still experience spiritual attack How to dwell in God's presence as a daily practice What is The Closet program, and who is it for Spiritual formation for Christian leaders and believers Pay-what-you-can Christian program and Kingdom economic theology How to build a consistent, transformative prayer life NEXT EPISODE We are going deeper into the theology of the secret place, what it means to build a prayer life that produces residents, not visitors. 1172. This week, we look at "toponyms" — words named after places — and you'll discover the hidden place names in denim, jeans, sherry, cantaloupe, and more. Then, we break down "principal" versus "principle," with memory tricks so you'll never forget the difference again.
Dwell in the secret place. There is a place that God reveals to those who are willing to enter.A place that is not defined by circumstances, or what is happening around you, but by His presence. In this place, you are not weak… you are strengthened. You are not vulnerable… you are covered. You are not defined by what you are facing… you are anchored in who He is.This is the place where you begin to see differently, speak differently, and walk with a level of authority that cannot be taken from you.It is not a distant or unreachable place. It is the secret place. The place where you stand with your Father, where fear loses its voice, and where every lie that once tried to define you is exposed. In this place, what once felt overwhelming no longer has the power to control you. From this place, you speak with authority… not as someone striving to become, but as one who already belongs. As co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17), as children of God (Galatians 3:26), you begin to move from a position of identity, not from insecurity.I encourage you… spend time in the secret place with God.I also encourage you to read or listen to my book “necessary.” chapter titled ‘The Secret Place.'
