As Shonnie Scott’s role as a pastor came to a finishing point, she found herself taking a leap of faith towards new and courageous opportunities. In this episode, Shonnie shares her experience with this career transition, and how much it formed her faith and calling.  Shonnie’s life-vocation is all about empowering others to flourish in their callings, which she has fulfilled through multiple “God-assignments” over the last three decades. She has served the local church professionally since 1986, most recently spending six and half years as a solo lead pastor, launching the first satellite campus of Bethany Community Church in West Seattle. Out of that experience, she continues to empower women by serving as a pastor, mentor, speaker, and spiritual director to women leaders, pastors and church planters. Because gender justice and racial justice are inseparable, she also serves as a leader of Racial Reconciliation and Justice ministry at Bethany Community Church.

Known by her stage name "Shonnie" Murrell, LaShonda Antrionette Harris was born in Jonesboro, Louisiana and raised in Houston, Texas. She has been singing and playing instruments since the age of 3. Shonnie graduated from Sharpstown High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Grambling State University. Shonnie can contribute her showmanship on percussion to her years she spent marching in the Grambling State World Famed Tiger Marching band. She also held the highest position in the band as “Master Drill Sgt.” and was one of the main reality personalities on the hit BET show, “Season of the Tiger”. From this she landed a spot on 106 and Park, BET Awards and other television appearances. The Shonnie Murrell Experience, which she names when performing with her full rhythm section and band, loves to give her fans the greatest performance on earth. Shonnie believes that her energy and engaging the audience are two key elements that are important to accomplish this feat! She is most of the time compared to Sheila E., Erykah Badu, and Missy Elliot because of her ability to mix her sound, lyrical and visual poetry all together. Some notables that Shonnie has performed with and opened for include: Most recent, LEELA JAMES, MAJOR., RICK ROSS, LIL WAYNE, SNOOP DOGG, LETOYA LUCKETT, the late great AL JARREAU and FRANK MCCOMBS, to name a few. Her performances have taken her from LA to NY over her short career before landing her back into Houston to help Title1 schools upstart their music programs with her partnership with Microsoft. From this, her new reality show pilot was birthed and is currently on the tables of some major networks.

For our annual Spring Pledge Drive, we feature a book about race, religion and DNA.  The book is The Wandering Gene and the Indian Princess, by Jeff Wheelwright.   It's a story about a beautiful young, Hispano woman in the San Luis Valley of Colorado who one day finds a pea-sized lump in her breast.  Her name is Shonnie Medina.  She is both Spanish and Native American - and the Spanish side of her family has been in the San Luis Valley for many centuries, farming, ranching, for the most part devout Catholics, often proud of their Catholic Spanish heritage.  We learn that Shonnie is a carrier of a potentially deadly condition, because her DNA includes “the breast cancer gene" that increases the risk of breast cancer, in some cases, by 80%, while also increasing the risk of other cancers, including some in men.  It’s a mutation that is over a thousand years old, and surprisingly, the version of this mutation that Shonnie carries is sometimes known as a "Jewish" cancer.
