Well, here we are again, back in the trenches of musical altruism, digging through the chaos and cocaine fumes of We Are the World. In our final part of this double header, we examine the actual recording process—a night filled with megastars, massive egos, and the creeping existential dread of Bob Dylan. We cover: Lionel Richie's unexpected side hustle as a musical firefighter, putting out diva-induced blazes. Quincy Jones' increasing exasperation as some of the greatest voices in music fail to hit their notes. Michael Jackson going off the deep end with Sheyla-Sheyla (which is absolutely, 100% real). Stevie Wonder offering to guide Ray Charles to the loo, leading to perhaps the only acceptable "blind leading the blind" joke in history. Prince skipping the whole thing to eat Mexican food down the road. Cindy Lauper causing technical difficulties by jingling like a Christmas tree made entirely of cheap jewellery. Diana Ross possibly being the most accidentally terrifying sweetheart of all time. Also: did this song actually make a difference? Or was it just the moment that finally convinced Michael Jackson he was the second coming? We get into all of that, while trying to decide whether the song is a masterpiece or just a very elaborate Pepsi advert. 00:00 Podcast Introduction and Banter 01:12 Podcast Admin and Patreon Promotion 04:42 Recording 'We Are the World': Setting the Scene 04:47 Quincy Jones and the Ensemble Choruses 07:03 Challenges and Tensions in the Studio 13:49 Prince's Absence and Sheila E's Disappointment 17:23 Final Takes and Notable Moments 25:14 Reflections and Aftermath 30:27 Michael Jackson's Missionary Phase 31:37 The Concept of an Artist's Imperial Moment 32:45 The Role of MTV and Charity Singles 34:09 Critiques and Controversies of Charity Campaigns 35:20 Bandaid vs. USA for Africa: Distribution and Impact 37:56 Political Complexities of Ethiopian Famine 44:08 Mismanagement and Consequences of Aid 47:02 USA for Africa's Long-Term Development Approach 49:53 Cultural Impact and Legacy of Charity Singles 52:39 Conclusion: Achievements and Lessons Learned

Pete Byrne of Naked Eyes was one of the first interviews I did solo for Stuck in the '80s. It was back in 2008 and I had just seen the band perform as part of the Regeneration Tour in Las Vegas. I don't know about you, but I didn't watch any of this year's Grammy Awards. This used to be appointment viewing back in the day, but now - not so much. I thought, let's revisit the ceremonies of 1975, 1985, and 1995. While we might not be tuning in now, these past shows seems to actually matter - and I recognize that is because I am an old man yelling at clouds! While you early Xers may recall the '75 awards, for me it was 1985. Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, and Lionel Richie were huge stars, while Huey Lewis & the News had their big breakout with “Sports”.The Best New artist award went to Cyndi Lauper. The other nominees? Sheila E., Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Corey Hart, and The Judds! I think Cyndi might have deserved that one!I'm not sure if it just being a middle aged man that informs my lack of interest in modern awards shows - it seems as though the industry has changed since our youth. While it has always been about the record labels and their influence, it at least seemed as thought the artistry was equally, if not more important, than record sales alone. So, did you watch the Grammys this year and are there any artists I should actually take the time to listen to?

** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 8: The son of pivotal P-Funk matchmaker, singer and Parlet member Mallia Franklin – also known as the Queen of Funk – and New Birth drummer Nate Neblett. Growing up in and around the Parliament-Funkadelic camp, guest Seth Neblett is a photographer and manager who has worked with artists that include Miki Howard, Maxi B of the Mary Jane Girls, Sheila E, Apollonia and Chaka Khan. For the past several years he has been working on the definitive book covering P-Funk's unsung female singers, called Mothership Connected: The Story of the Women of Parliament-Funkadelic. It is scheduled to drop in August 2025. RECORDED OCTOBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright.
