"What do you want for dinner honey?" "I don't know." The demasculinization of men under the threat of toxic masculinity and the idea that men are babbling incompetent buffoons is the reason for passive parenting on Papa's part and why women come across like nags. They want their partner to be an active part in the household, not another child they have to raise, and men don't want to be spoken down to. So how did we get here and what can we do about it? In this episode I talk with Elliott Katz. After he went through a divorce, he set out to understand what it means to be a man in a relationship. He found a lot of other men were asking the same questions he was, and they all struggled to find good ideas and useful information. He finally found answers in some of the oldest notions about being a man and shares those insights in his latest book Being the Strong Man A Woman Wants: Timeless wisdom on being a man. The ideas in this book can help you build a stronger marriage and a stronger love relationship. It is even available in 24 languages.  Elliott's ideas seemed counterintuitive to me, but I found out how right he actually is. Even my wife thinks he is right. We got talking out of the gate so let's pick it up on the fly. More about Elliott at www.ElliottKatz.com

Oh, a little--maybe, an understatement--controversy here! You'll want to weigh in in the comments, I'm betting. Elliott Katz, today's guest, suggests that today's man is confused about his role in a relationship. Could be. What do you think? Of course, we talked about this at length. When I read Katz' book, Being the Strong Man a Woman Wants, I had big reactions and equally big questions that I could hardly wait to ask him. My sense was that there is a subtext of taking charge in the relationship--and, not always in mutual ways. So, I asked about that. I wanted to know if he could embrace my idea that healthy relationships are built on equality, reciprocity, and mutuality. Hmmmm....interesting conversation! Katz says, " Men today have heard a bewildering messages about being a man in a relationship and can't understand why these ideas aren't working and women are so frustrated with them. Elliott Katz shares insights about being a man that many men today weren't taught. Interestingly, women tell men, "These is what I have been trying to tell you all this time." What Women Want -  Being the Strong Man A Woman Wants [caption id="attachment_1543" align="aligncenter" width="300"] photo credit: mariadelajuana Promise via photopin (license)[/caption] What women want from a man is the age old question particularly for many men. We are (men and women)  fundamentally different creature spiritually and psychologically.  We often hear communication is key to a healthy relationship, but what happens when pieces of the conversation are lost in translation? Elliott Katz has pulled information from his own life to begin his journey after the demise of his own ten-year marriage. This began a journey of research and understanding to find out the modern missing link. Through his life experiences and countless hours of study, Elliott began to see the missing pieces before his very eyes.  Timeless knowledge. Women want a man who has leadership skills without being controlling. I have battled with the understanding of understanding what my past relationship partners required in our relationships. The conclusion is each party must be open to the dialog and make requirement clear. Elliot states, nothing has really changed over time, but the messages from outside influences have changed. Men are portrayed as weak or overbearing. Confusing the matter is the dialog of the feminist and other movements that may not explain the necessary requirement and clear understanding of people wants. He asked you out -- and then couldn’t even decide where to go for a cup of coffee? Why are women today are so frustrated with today’s men? "A lot of men don’t realize what they’re doing to try to have a good relationship – such as asking a woman out and then expecting her to make the plans -- may be making things worse," says Elliott Katz, whose book Being the Strong Man A Woman Wants: Timeless wisdom on being a man has been translated into 24 languages by publishers in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa. An Amazon customer reviewer wrote, “This book has saved our marriage.” A woman wrote about the book’s insights, “If my husband of 38 years had understood these basic but crucial truths, my marriage would not have disintegrated.” [caption id="attachment_1544" align="aligncenter" width="300"] photo credit: Nithi clicks Love Has No Age via photopin (license)[/caption] Katz shares insights on being a man that has been lost to many men in this generation: Show your share of leadership. One of the biggest complaints women have about men today is that they don’t show their share of leadership. When a man sees a situation that needs to be dealt with that is not being dealt with, he should step forward and deal with it. Make decisions. To many women, a man who avoids making decisions is shirking his responsibilities. Take responsibility. Don’t blame others for something that goes wrong. Step forward and deal with it. To women he advises: Encourage your man to make decisions. If he asks you to make a decision -- such as choosing a place to go for coffee -- say, “You decide” and let him decide. Inform him of a situation where his leadership can help and ask him to handle it. Telling the man in your life what to do is not advised, but it is important to avoid contradicting him, unless what he wants to do is dangerous or damaging. Appreciate him. Tell him you appreciate him dealing with the situation.   Being the Strong Man A Woman Wants is available as a paperback from Amazon.com and bookstores and as an ebook from Kindle, iBooks and Kobo. Three Things a Man Needs to be in a Successful Relationship He's sensitive and tries hard to please the woman in his life, but when there's a problem that needs to be dealt with, he seems oblivious. When she asks for input on a decision, he says, "It's up to you." He wants to be nice but doesn't understand why he's frustrating her. Elliott Katz understands why women today complain about the lack of quality men. "Today's men have received so many confusing messages on what a man should be, they're bewildered.” "To avoid accusations of being controlling, many men have gone to the other extreme and avoid showing leadership and making decisions. The irony is that while men think they're being sensitive and non-controlling, the biggest complaint I hear from women is that men today don't show leadership, they don't make decisions and they won't take responsibility in the relationship," says Katz, whose book Being the Strong Man A Woman Wants: Timeless wisdom on being a man is being translated into 22 languages in Europe, Asia and Latin America.  Elliott Katz is a professional speechwriter in Toronto and the author of seven nonfiction books and has done many radio and television interviews. Audiences find him informative and lively. He teaches the principles in this book to men and women, and speaks at seminars and conferences.  Click here to purchase Elliot's book from Amazon.com
