🎈I guess now's as good of time as any to share a clip of this unfinished and filthy song about eating balloons that we'll probably never finish.
This is a cover of the 2004 song "You Fuck Me Up," by Dub Narcotic Sound System, a lo-fi funk band named after the recording studio in Olympia, Washington, where many of our friends and extended Pacific Northwest community have recorded albums over the decades for K Records and various other satellite labels. The original vocal on this song is performed by the Olympia underground art-ward multi-instrumentalist staple Heather Dunn (Tiger Trap, Liarbird, Lois, Raincoats, The No-No's, Halo Benders, Dennis Driscoll) whose fantastic and loose performance taps into an undeniable, elemental horniness. It's very alive. This music, and the larger constellation of music that constitutes its scene, has always represented, to us, the very fundamentals of punk. In its infinite capacity to miss the point, Pitchfork called this song "horrifically off-key" and "endlessly bad" back in the day. Lyrics Touch my nose and undress my belt It just the way that we used to felt It fucks me up night til noon When will you come again it’s never too soon You fuck me up, baby Up down and sideways and back again You fuck me up, baby Your shits so good yeah I wish you would Look through the soles of my shoes for clues It’s been hot so I ask just what to do You fuck up from night til to noon But when you’re gone come back ‘cuz it’s too soon You fuck me up Your hair fucks me up That’s why I creep That’s why I weep You fuck me up South states goes round and round Old records go round and round This town goes round and round Big wheel go rou nd and round Come take my heart and send it to me Come here now and you will see A rabid power my love can be A rabid power that’s a reason to dance with me You fuck me up I can’t get up I can’t stand up, baby Round and round I ain’t stop and You fuck me up I can’t stand up for the love ‘cuz you got me strung out I am the one that you want without a doubt Come on and scrape come on and scream a little more You fuck me up baby watch me and I head for the door You fuck me up I like the way you fuck me up You fuck me up Steamy windows Condensation Evaporation Elation Steamy windows You fuck me up, baby Credits Released May 1, 2020 Recorded, performed, produced, and mixed by YACHT Mastered by Timothy Stollenwerk
Week six of quarantine and now we're dreaming about long nights driving aimlessly around Los Angeles with our friends, pinballing from place to place and feeling the sense of aliveness you get just from being in cars, showing up to parties, leaving, heading somewhere else, to the club, always moving & never going anywhere, detached from time until the night turns to morning. "Popularity" is our favorite song from our favorite Sparks album (1983's "In Outer Space")—a perfect ode to being a vapid LA person going everywhere at once, and to the simple satisfaction of being around other people and feeling popular. By the time we get back out into the world we'll have forgotten what our favorite places are called too. This whole album is perfect and nails a balance of reckless energy and deep loneliness that feels very appropriate to our moment. Lyrics I like you and you like me a lot And we do those things that can make us feel hot Then we join some friends, all of them are all right And we talk a while, then we climb in our cars What a night, we all drive into town Where we'll park our cars, and meet the rest of our friends At a place that's called, I forget what it's called But it's really great, and all our friends will be there Popularity I like you and you like me a lot And it's nice to be all alone with you too But it's also nice being out with our friends Cause they're all all right, maybe that's why we're friends Popularity I feel great, but it's getting real late So I'll drive you home and you'll slide up real close I'm so glad we met, and I like you so much And I'm also glad that I got all those friends Popularity Credits Released April 23, 2020 Recorded, performed, produced, and mixed by YACHT Mastered by Timothy Stollenwerk
We speak with Claire Evans and Jona Becholt of YACHT, Young Americans Challenging High Technology, about their use of tech to produce albums and performances that push the boundaries of how music is experienced, produced, delivered, and more. Such projects include their Grammy-nominated album Chain Tripping created with the assistance of AI. In this episode, we speak with YACHT about the creative process to produce Chain Tripping, address misconceptions around their use of AI, YACHT's origin story, and Evans' recently published book, Broad Band: The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the Internet.-About YACHT-YACHT stands for Young Americans Challenging High Technology, but they're neither young nor all-American. YACHT is three people—Jona Becholt, Claire L. Evans, and Rob Kieswetter—working in Los Angeles, California, asking questions and answering them with records, texts, videos, objects, installations, scores and performances. They make as much as possible with as little as possible and learn by doing.Chain Tripping is their Grammy-nominated seventh album, composed by running their 18-year back catalogue through a scotch taped-together assortment of machine learning models and then reckoning with the results. It's been raining nonstop in Los Angeles and we've been spiraling inwards into all our favorite music; we read Marc Weidenbaum's 33 1/3 book about "Selected Ambient Works" recently and learned that Richard D. James does a lot of his best work in between naps. This is a song for the in-between period of sleep and waking. Support us on Bandcamp: https://yacht.bandcamp.com/track/multi-family-garage-sale-single We're revisiting all our influences in quarantine. This is a cover of "Multi-Family Garage Sale," from Land of the Loops' 1995 7" single (and 1996 album, Bundle of Joy). This album made a huge impact on me (Jona) as it showed me that bridge could be built between DIY Pacific Northwest indie-pop and sample-based electronic music. If you're taking a lot of walks around your neighborhood right now, this is a great soundtrack for looking at the world and appreciating small things. "Land of the Loops’ Alan Sutherland was just another Minor Threat fan who couldn’t hold a band together until his conscientious parents bought him a sampler for graduation. The result was a couple of cassette releases and a CD for Seattle’s Up Records, Bundle of Joy, that lures Beat Happening’s Heather Lewis and others into what the Young Marble Giants might’ve done had they had the technology—a loop-driven basement party for the international pop underground." “Do They Owe Us a Living?” is one of the very first songs recorded by the British anarchist punk band Crass in 1977. The chorus is “do they owe us a living? Of course they fucking do,” meaning that we all—regardless of who we are or where we come from or what we do for work—deserve quality of life. That this idea is still radical in 2020 is testament to the infuriating lack of creativity, empathy, and joy that constitutes life in a purely capitalist society. Crass sold their albums so cheaply they lost money on every sale; this single costs $5 and we’re donating 100% of proceeds to One Fair Wage’s Emergency Coronavirus Tipped and Service Worker Support Fund, which provides direct cash assistance to restaurant workers, car service drivers, delivery workers, personal service workers and more who are owed a living, now as ever. Our recording owes a huge debt of gratitude to The Soft Pink Truth, who recorded an excellent version of “Do They Owe Us a Living?” for 2004 for Do You Want New Wave (Or Do You Want The Soft Pink Truth?). Our cover is a cover of this cover. The Crass Logo was designed by Dave King. We made this pixel version in Animal Crossing. Lyrics: Do they owe us a living? Of course they do, of course they do Do they owe us a living? Of course they fucking do They don't want me anymore, threw it on the floor Used to call me sweet thing, I'm nobody's plaything And now that I am different, love to bust my head You'd love to see me cop out, love to see me dead Do they owe us a living? Of course they do, of course they do Do they owe us a living? Of course they fucking do The living that is owed to me, I'm never going to get Buggered this whole world up, up to their necks in debt. Give you a lobotomy for something you ain't done Make you the epitome of everything that's wrong Do they owe us a living? Of course they do, of course they do Do they owe us a living? Of course they fucking do Don't take any notice of what the public thinks So much on the TV, just don't want to think. Used you as a target, they want to sell advice When you don't want to hear it, say you're full of vice Do they owe us a living? Of course they do, of course they do Do they owe us a living? Of course they fucking do Credits: Released April 3, 2020 Recorded, performed, produced, and mixed by YACHT Mastered by Timothy Stollenwerk Donate on Bandcamp: https://yacht.bandcamp.com/track/do-they-owe-us-a-living
"Isolation" is a song from Joy Division's second/final album, "Closer," released in 1980. We recorded this version on Thursday March 19th, 2020, while self-isolating at home in Los Angeles, California. All of our upcoming shows have been cancelled. Lyrics: In fear every day, every evening He calls her aloud from above Carefully watched for a reason Painstaking devotion and love Surrendered to self preservation From others who care for themselves A blindness that touches perfection But hurts just like anything else Isolation Isolation Isolation Mother I tried please believe me I'm doing the best that I can I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through I'm ashamed of the person I am Isolation Isolation Isolation But if you could just see the beauty These things I could never describe These pleasures a wayward distraction This is my one lucky prize Isolation Isolation Isolation Isolation Isolation Credits: Released March 20, 2020 Recorded, performed, produced, and mixed by YACHT Mastered by Rob Dennler Support us on Bandcamp: https://yacht.bandcamp.com/track/isolation-single
Reeling from the loss of Prince, we dug up an unfinished cover of "Annie Christian" we started in 2011, while recording our DFA album Shangri-La, and finished it. "Annie Christian" has always struck us as one of the weirdest Prince songs, a loose narrative of dark true stories from 1979-1981: John Lennon's assassination, the Atlanta murders, and the FBI's Abscam corruption sting. Prince was wounded by the evil in the world, and did a great deal both privately and publicly to bring the light.

We found Claire's old 4-track in a box. The tape inside, when we played it back, kept warping. The original was a single-microphone recording of guitar; this rhythm is a consequence of a damaged playhead, like the Tascam is playing along. We couldn't get much of the old songs, but we built this out of what was left over.
