On this episode, Marc talks with Angela Jaeger, author of “I Feel Famous: Punk Diaries 1977-1981,” released on February 4th, 2025. It's a compendium of her diary entries when she was a teenager living in New York and London, going to see punk bands at CBGB's, Max's, Tier 3, and many other places. Jaeger seemingly saw and met every band around, forging friendships with the Cramps, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, X-Ray Spex, the Raincoats, and the Clash, among many others. Her diary entries rush with the excitement of getting to see new music every night at a time when bands were seemingly forming every minute. As Jaeger writes, "When I see myself jumping back and forth between New York and London, going out all the time to see bands, joining bands, starting college, stopping college, etc, it leaves my head spinning. And yet I see the motivations behind my moves–wanting to figure out who I was on my own terms, not always pleasing my parents or even myself, but curious to grab the moment, tell the story here and now.”You can buy Jaeger's book here: https://hatandbeard.com/products/i-feel-famous-punk-diaries-1977-1981We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Angela Jaeger!

Richard Dudanski in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.amazon.co.uk/Squat-City-Rocks-protopunk-beyond This musical memoir traces the author's life in the corrugated-iron clad ruins of West London's Squat Land during the two years immediately prior to the Punk Explosion of '76, playing with Strummer's seminal garage band “The 101'ers” in the spit-and-sawdust music bars of the capital. The thrills and spills of a crazy, quirky, hand-to-mouth existence gives way to relative disenchantment with the oncoming of the Punk Uprising, which for the author represents, at least partly, a sell-out to the Machiavellian Managers, as much as the vaunted revolution in British popular culture. After an aborted venture with the iconoclastic “Tymon Dogg and the Fools”, a stint with Lydon's metal box period “Public Image Limited”, a term with the Dantesque-dub of “Basement Five”, Dudanski's tale relates the ups and downs of his involvement in a myriad of bands forming part of a fringe underground London scene through the late 70's and 80's - “Bank of Dresden”, “The Raincoats”, “The Tesco Bombers”, "Vincent Units", “The Decomposers”, and his eventual move from London to Granada...Forming an integral part of the book are the illustrations by Esperanza Romero (Richard's partner) many of which were drawn "in situ" back in time...

This mixtape features the second single by Hudson Palace - The Who Cover ‘I'm A Boy' to be released this year. And the song, maybe one of the first in pop culture history to question gender roles, is captured here to psyche-folk perfection. It's not all covers, though; three are a few originals by Against Me!, Cavetown, Phranc, and others. From Tony, half of Hudson Palace - "I'm A Boy" was a particular fave of mine as a kid, back when I first fell in love with The Who and played the Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy compilation daily, which it closed out. (The photograph shows art of myself at around that age.) It has taken a lifetime of being involved in music, which has included writing extensively about The Who, to feel comfortable with covering Pete Townshend's songs; fortunately, forming Hudson Palace with Paula has allowed for a (semi)-acoustic approach to the loudest of rock bands, and this song have an additionally baroque element to it.Artists - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, The Raincoats, Hudson Palace, Cavetown, Mhaol, Yoko Ono, Le Tigre, Föllakzoid, Antony And The Johnsons, and loads more. I interviewed Andrew Butler from Hercules and Love Affair last year and he made a really great point about how the most exciting music is produced when one “scene” starts to fade but the next “big thing” hasn't yet arrived – l think of it like when a new star is being born from all this gas and dust coming together -  before the “rules” of that genre are established (cos that's what happens, right?) so it's much more volatile, experimental and liberated. So, just delving into the past a little bit….in the late 70's, it was time for a change…bands like Bush Tetras, The Pop Group, The Raincoats, Gang of Four, Pigbag, The Mekons and the band that Lesley fronted for a brief but hugely influential time were creating a fork in the road. The Au Pairs took their music in a direction that was as exciting as it was inventive, through a mighty rhythm section that made your hips shake (well, they made mine rattle even then) and the taut, jagged guitar and Lesley's distinctive vocals and lyrics. They looked great, they sounded great, they were singing about stuff that mattered - misogyny, racism, conformism, relationships - and were, to my mind at least, leaders in creating a wave of bands whose impact is being felt more than ever. Pioneers isn't too strong a word in my opinion.Anyway, after the Au Pairs disbanded, Lesley went on a long hiatus doing something completely different - she became an immigration lawyer, but she has picked up her guitar again and there is a lot of stuff going on which I think is hugely exciting.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Fall is in the air, the leaves are changing into their vibrant hues of brown, orange, yellow and red. Pumpkin spice has been sprinkled on everything edible and infused in aroma candles and therapy. Raincoats and sweater come out of the closet and a new covid 19 booster is available at the druggist. You gotta love it!! One of my favorite traditions is also taking place this fall.... HOMECOMING. I will celebrate in one way or another my alma mater (HU You KNOW!!), by enjoy the game (Go BISON), strolling on to the yard and greeting old friends and classmates, and of course by taking in some live Jazz!! Yes, as I have said many times before... Jazz music is a dish best served live, however if you can't make it to the club or the theater Jazzism (a katzpheno mix) is the next best thing. It even sounds better when enjoying a warm Pumpkin Spiced Latte. This is an excerpt from a patrons episode. To hear the full show, and much more like this, head to Patreon.com/LoveMessagePod. In this patrons-only bonus episode, Jeremy explores what it means to analyse music from a feminist perspective. Beginning with a literature review of both the various forms of feminism theorised in the 1970s, and the body of feminist music writing from the late 80s to the early 2000s, we hear about the work of important thinkers like Susan McClary, Simon Reynolds, Angela McRobbie and Judith Butler to tease out what the various feminist perspectives were and what the task of feminist music criticism might be. We consider formal expressions of gender within music through Bach, Beethoven and Black Sabbath; spend time with the feminist post-punks Siouxie Sioux, Patti Smith and the Raincoats; think about how disco fits into all this; and consider the work of Laurie Anderson and Donna Haraway in the early 80s as they point towards a new form of cyborg feminism. In episode 85, Birch talks about important music memories from her childhood (hearing her brother's Bob Marley records through the bedroom wall, seeing The Slits in concert and realizing that girls could also play in bands, and more), the early days of The Raincoats and how embracing their inexperience and enthusiastically presenting songs that were still "in the process of becoming" was a key part of their approach. We also talk about her work in visual arts, as a music video and short film director, and more recently via large scale paintings like the one you see a portion of on the new album's cover.
