Three convicts vanished from America's most secure prison using dummy heads made of toilet paper and hair, leaving behind only pieces of a makeshift raft and a mystery that has haunted investigators for over 60 years - but many don't know about the evidence that was hidden and suppressed.Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateTake the WEIRD DARKNESS LISTENER SURVEY and help mold the future of the podcast =https://weirddarkness.com/surveyIN THIS EPISODE: On June 12, 1962, guards at America's most secure prison discovered three papier-mâché heads grinning from empty beds where Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers should have been sleeping. The convicts had vanished into the freezing waters of San Francisco Bay using a raft made from stolen raincoats, leaving behind a mystery that haunts investigators to this day. Whether they drowned in the attempt or lived out their days under assumed names, no one has ever proven what happened to the three men who did the impossible — they escaped from Alcatraz.ABOUT WEIRD DARKNESS: Weird Darkness is a true crime and paranormal podcast narrated by professional award-winning voice actor, Darren Marlar. On this episode, Marc talks with Audrey Golden, author of "Shouting Out Loud: Lives of the Raincoats," published on July 15, 2025. It's an innovative and thorough biography of the crucial UK band the Raincoats, told through an unconventional structure which divides their history not into eras, but "lives" - those of the band members, their supporters, and the people they inspired. As Audrey writes, "I consider this book–constructed from a Raincoats material archive built by Ana, as well as an archive of oral history and additional research materials collected by me–to be a layered feminist archive unto itself."You can buy Audrey's book here, and you can hear her talk about her previous book, "I Thought I Heard You Speak: Woman At Factory Records,” on our 14th episode here. We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Audrey Golden!

Flo is off the plot today and in the London garden of English musician, filmmaker, painter and feminist icon, Gina Birch.Gina's career spans the late 1970s and 80s when, alongside Ana De Silva, she formed The Raincoats. Through the 80s and 90s she continued to make music with Red Crayola and toured with Nirvana, as well as making music videos for the likes of New Order. Constantly evolving, her more contemporary work is in paint, film and more music. Her new album, Trouble, is just out on Third Man Records. Flo and Gina got so lost in conversation that the gardening barely gets a look in. Some green beans did eventually get planted whilst they talk about feminist icons, the Women In Revolt show, life in 1970s London and Gina's occasional wish to be a bus conductor. Bassist Gina Birch is a founding member of the legendary British post-punk band the Raincoats, whose self-titled 1977 debut album is an off-kilter classic. More Raincoats albums followed, as did stints with Dorothy and the Hangovers, but it wasn't until 2023 that Birch released her first solo album, the acclaimed I Play My Bass Loud. Now she's made Trouble, which again draws on dub, reggae and electronica textures while exploring the intersection of art and the often-troublesome outside world. Birch is fierce, funny and down-to-earth as she tells how she approaches and creates her art, which includes painting, filmmaking and an appearance in the Tate Gallery's “Women in Revolt!” exhibition in London last year. She also reflects on Kurt Cobain's Raincoats fandom—and his death a week before the Raincoats were slated to open Nirvana' 1994 UK tour—and the power of female artists “Making Trouble Again.” (Photo by Dean Chalkley.)

This is a special edition when The Bureau meets Jason Woodbury of Aquarium Drunkard for a joint transmission.     Los Angeles-based online music magazine Aquarium Drunkard is a one-of-a-kind map to the sprawling and often overwhelming landscape of independent music.  Founded in 2005 and piloted for over twenty years by Justin Gage, it has served as a curator, a passionate advocate, and a community for those seeking sounds beyond the mainstream. The Aquarium Drunkard podcast - Transmissions - hosted by Jason Woodbury, has become a massive resource for deep dives into music and culture via conversations and with an amazing range of musicians and cultural figures including Jeff Bridges, Jim Jarmusch, John Lurie, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, Devendra Banhart, Lee Ranaldo, Bonnie "Prince" Billy,  Shirley Collins, Gina Birch of the Raincoats and many, many more. Jason and I decided to make a joint transmission to talk about Aquarium Drunkard and Bureau of Lost Culture, and why we do it.   As well as writing for AQ, Jason writes for Pitchfork and Stereogum, is the creative director of WASTOIDS audio network, makes radiophonic sound collage, and he is a musician himself, so, of course, one of the first questions I ask him his how he gets it all done - especially as he has two dogs at his home in the Sonoran desert.     There is a bit of mutual back scratching, but we soon get onto the much more important topics of: the best time for creative work, not eating in your twenties, smoking, dreaming, the collective unconscious, David Lynch who really owns The Beatles song Yesterday, AI, consciousness, the most emotional moments from shows, the power of conversation and storytelling, who we'd really like to interview and what's next..

It's a compendium of her diary entries when she was a teenager living in New York and London, going to see punk bands at CBGB's, Max's, Tier 3, and many other places. Jaeger seemingly saw and met every band around, forging friendships with the Cramps, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, X-Ray Spex, the Raincoats, and the Clash, among many others. Her diary entries rush with the excitement of getting to see new music every night at a time when bands were seemingly forming every minute. As Jaeger writes, "When I see myself jumping back and forth between New York and London, going out all the time to see bands, joining bands, starting college, stopping college, etc, it leaves my head spinning. And yet I see the motivations behind my moves–wanting to figure out who I was on my own terms, not always pleasing my parents or even myself, but curious to grab the moment, tell the story here and now.”You can buy Jaeger's book here: https://hatandbeard.com/products/i-feel-famous-punk-diaries-1977-1981We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Angela Jaeger!

Richard Dudanski in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.amazon.co.uk/Squat-City-Rocks-protopunk-beyond This musical memoir traces the author's life in the corrugated-iron clad ruins of West London's Squat Land during the two years immediately prior to the Punk Explosion of '76, playing with Strummer's seminal garage band “The 101'ers” in the spit-and-sawdust music bars of the capital. The thrills and spills of a crazy, quirky, hand-to-mouth existence gives way to relative disenchantment with the oncoming of the Punk Uprising, which for the author represents, at least partly, a sell-out to the Machiavellian Managers, as much as the vaunted revolution in British popular culture. After an aborted venture with the iconoclastic “Tymon Dogg and the Fools”, a stint with Lydon's metal box period “Public Image Limited”, a term with the Dantesque-dub of “Basement Five”, Dudanski's tale relates the ups and downs of his involvement in a myriad of bands forming part of a fringe underground London scene through the late 70's and 80's - “Bank of Dresden”, “The Raincoats”, “The Tesco Bombers”, "Vincent Units", “The Decomposers”, and his eventual move from London to Granada...Forming an integral part of the book are the illustrations by Esperanza Romero (Richard's partner) many of which were drawn "in situ" back in time...

Homily from the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Sacraments are God's presence and power...do we let them change us? We continually come into contact with the living God in the Sacraments. But we often leave our encounter with the Sacraments the same as when we arrived. If we are open to what God wants, we are surrendering to His will. Mass Readings from June 30, 2024: Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24 Psalms 30:2, 4, 5-6, 11-132 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15 Mark 5:21-43

This mixtape features the second single by Hudson Palace - The Who Cover ‘I'm A Boy' to be released this year. And the song, maybe one of the first in pop culture history to question gender roles, is captured here to psyche-folk perfection. It's not all covers, though; three are a few originals by Against Me!, Cavetown, Phranc, and others. From Tony, half of Hudson Palace - "I'm A Boy" was a particular fave of mine as a kid, back when I first fell in love with The Who and played the Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy compilation daily, which it closed out. (The photograph shows art of myself at around that age.) It has taken a lifetime of being involved in music, which has included writing extensively about The Who, to feel comfortable with covering Pete Townshend's songs; fortunately, forming Hudson Palace with Paula has allowed for a (semi)-acoustic approach to the loudest of rock bands, and this song have an additionally baroque element to it.Artists - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, The Raincoats, Hudson Palace, Cavetown, Mhaol, Yoko Ono, Le Tigre, Föllakzoid, Antony And The Johnsons, and loads more.
