Janice Headley talks with Stuart Moxham of Young Marble Giants about Colossal Youth. This album from the Welsh post-punk trio may seem like a surprising entry on Kurt's list given its minimalist instrumentation, but these bands shared a similar disdain for the spotlight. PULSARS mark the end of that era. Leader Dave Trumfio (vocals, guitar, synths production and most anything else) and his younger brother Harry (drums) grew up playing music in a suburban Chicago basement. While still in his teens, Dave abandoned college-level music production and engineering studies to focus on songwriting and artist endeavors; his native talents soon found him an apprenticeship at Seagrape Studios working with talents as disparate as house music pioneer Mr Fingers, British first-wave stalwarts The Pretty Things and dub plate sessions with the legendary reggae producer / musician Niney The Observer . . . all within months of his first real go behind the mixing desk. Chicago's past musical glories felt far in the past then, replaced by a sea of skinny tie power pop bands, poofy hair metal combos of some timidity and a few rough-hewn exponents of sub-Buzzcocks punk and Fiorucci-ready new wave. Ignoring it all, Dave ran a small studio in a shared house he rented with friends before taking the risky - and expensive - plunge into opening a 'real' studio on the northwest corner of Wicker Park, soon to burst into a degree of infamy due to a small contingent of cult heroes who lived there for cheap rent and cheaper bars - Liz Phair, Eleventh Dream Day, Big Black, Urge Overkill, Tortoise et al. Daves role in all of this was minimal by nature; he preferred to record acts from farther afield - Billy Bragg, then-recent Chicago transplants Wilco, The Mekons, Young Marble Giants guitarist and songwriter Stuart Moxham, Barbara Manning, Captain Beefhearts main man Gary Lucas, an array of other acts from Iceland, Australia and all corners of the UK. Business was good, and it grew. A quick writer of odd pop ditties, one day Dave called in his brother Harry and recorded - in a single afternoon session - a set of nine demos known. The story's been related countless times, but within weeks the band was opening for Oasis and found itself being courted by a dozen labels. Their few local shows were undefinable. Dave played guitar and sang, Harry drummed triggered a reel of additional music, often with video backing . . . which dazzled spectators in that pre-laptop era. After months of negotiations, the band signed a multi-million deal with Almo Sounds, a new label begun by A&M founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss and distributed by Geffen. It was - and likely still is - the largest deal ever offered to an emerging Chicago musical act. The band engaged in numerous tours to support their self-titled debut, playing with Sean Lennon & Cibo Matto, Blur, Supergrass, and many others, as well as seemingly infinite jaunts to Japan, where Dave and Harry were hailed as heroes of subversive minimalist pop - the ecstatic screams of young fans at the first few notes of Submission To The Master& at first bewildering the brothers. Suddenly, the Almo Sounds deal with Geffen fell apart at the start of a tour supporting then-current sensations Weezer. Promotion was pulled; radio support for the first single from the album collapsed in a mere moment. Due to contractual vagaries, the band was allowed to complete a second (unreleased) album just before the label folded. And that was it, until the news of the 2021 release of Pulsar Transmissions", a collection of unheard songs and versions that the band recorded before and during their short-term deal. Rolling Stone offered their self titled debut ;Pulsars as one of the 40 greatest albums ever recorded by an act with one real album: PULSARS's Info Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pulsarsband/?hl=en X / Twitter: https://x.com/PulsarsBand Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pulsarsofficial/
Born and raised in Wales, Moxham grew up with his brother and future YMG bandmate Philip Moxham during the late 50s and into the 60s with influences such as The Kinks and The Beatles. picking up the guitar on a cosmic whim, starting the incredibly infleuntial and acclaimed Young Marble Giants, signing with Rough Trade, the legend and legacy of the band, his solo career and most recently his new album entitled "fabstract" that was released earlier this week.

Linda Smith in conversation with David Eastaugh https://lindasmith2.bandcamp.com/ https://capturedtracks.com/artist/linda-smith/ A pioneer of the home recording movement, Linda Smith released several collections of delicate, bewitching solo music on cassette in the 1980s and 90s. The 2021 release of Till Another Time: 1988-1996, Captured Tracks' compilation of Smith's work, has helped bestow rightful critical acclaim to the ahead-of-her-time artist. Now, Captured Tracks dives deeper into Smith's catalog with the release of two full-length companion albums, Nothing Else Matters and I So Liked Spring, available for the first time on vinyl & streaming formats. Recorded at Smith's home in Baltimore in 1995, Nothing Else Matters chronicles the tension between the mundanity of daily life and the creative impulse: ”I was working for Ringling Bros at their corporate headquarters in Northern VA and driving there and back to Baltimore on the DC beltway,” Smith remembers. “I aimed for detachment and some degree of humor in order to see things more clearly.” Traffic noises on the charmingly boisterous “Little To Be Won” showcase this levity, as does the addition of playful hand claps and a laugh track to her striking cover of Young Marble Giants' “Salad Days.” Despite its homespun inception, the arrangements are sophisticated, as in the bright, percussive opener “The Answer To Your Question.” This complexity is also reflective of Smith's evolving recording techniques – having outgrown her 4-track tape machine, she'd purchased a Fostex 8-track, on which she recorded both Nothing Else Matters and I So Liked Spring.

Stuart Moxham - Young Marble Giants - in conversation with David Eastaugh Young Marble Giants formed from the ashes of the band True Wheel which also included friends Matthew Davis and Louise Porter who later signed to EMI. Stuart Moxham wrote the majority of the band's songs. Their sound was characterised by Phil's prominent bass lines, Stuart's rhythm guitar and Galanti electric organ lines and Statton's vocals. Stuart Moxham's girlfriend, Wendy Smith, lent him the money to buy the Rickenbacker. Smith, an art student in Cardiff at the time Young Marble Giants formed, photographed the band's US tour, and also designed cover art for several singles and albums by Weekend.

Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 – c. April 5, 1994) was an American singer, songwriter, artist and musician. He was the frontman of the rock band Nirvana, serving as the band's guitarist, lead vocalist, and primary songwriter. Through his angst-fueled songwriting and anti-establishment persona, Cobain's compositions widened the thematic conventions of mainstream rock music. He was often heralded as a spokesman of Generation X and is considered to be one of the most influential musicians in the history of alternative rock. This episode is based on Kurt's handwritten list of Top 50 albums, as featured in the 2002 anthology Journals. Note we included a song from each side of The Faith/Void split LP which brings our song total to 51. Adam Nathaniel Yauch (August 5, 1964 – May 4, 2012), better known under the stage name MCA, was an American rapper, bass player, filmmaker and a founding member of the hip hop group Beastie Boys. Yauch co-founded the Beastie Boys with Mike 'Mike D' Diamond and Adam 'Ad-Rock' Horovitz in 1979. The band started off as a hardcore punk group, but soon began experimenting with hip-hop. The band broke huge with their first proper album, Licensed to Ill, in 1986; it was the biggest-selling rap album of the decade and the first to reach Number One on the Billboard chart. Further albums Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head and Ill Communication cemented the Beasties as a true superstar act. Yauch also directed many of the Beastie Boys' music videos under the pseudonym Nathaniel Hornblower. Here it is!!! Matt & Scott finally get to the first proper release on Creation. (Quality takes time, right??!) Your hosts debate the merit of the (much-maligned-in-its-time) record that started it all, and then they talk to the man himself, JERRY THACKRAY a.k.a. THE LEGEND! a.k.a. EVERETT TRUE. Best known for his writing in the NME and Melody Maker, as well as for his and books on NIRVANA, WHITE STRIPES, and THE RAMONES, Mr. Thackray is a fascinating and Zelig-like character. And we LOVE his later (post-Creation) EPs (links below), so you'll hear a few clips of those as well. It's a sprawling and wild ride, but trust us, it's worth sticking around for the whole thing. There's music, there's sadness, there's drama, there's brushes with fame. It's got everything, even a live song. Formed in Cardiff, Wales in 1978, Young Marble Giants released one – and only one – full-length record in 1980: “Colossal Youth” The sparse, quietly minimalist record was a stark contrast to much of the post-punk music being made at the time, and caught the ear of many including this week’s guest, Bioscience Professor and music lover Michael Bruford. Highly recommended! “If you think the world is A clutter of existence Falling through the air With minimal resistance You could be right, how would I know? Colossal youth is showing the way to go.”

Spike Williams in conversation with David Eastaugh Welsh guitarist and co-founder of South Wales' record label, Z Block Records. In May 1979, Z Block set up a base in Splott, Cardiff, where they set about organising the city's first DIY compilation LP. Titled Is The War Over?, this seminal compilation was released in October 1979 and its release brought The Young Marble Giants to Rough Trade's attention. It also showcased many of Cardiff's best post punk bands of the period. Reptile Ranch disbanded in 1980. After the split of Young Marble Giants in 1980, Spike started writing with their vocalist, Alison Statton. Later that year, Alison merged this work with a London-based project which brought in Simon Emmerson to create a new band named Weekend. At the same time Spike was working in Cardiff with Lewis Mottram and Debbie Debris as Table Table. When Weekend split in 1983, Spike returned to Splott and formed Bomb and Dagger with singer Debbie Debris and a handful of Cardiff musicians - the original line-up included both Alison Statton and Phil Moxham, and Andrew Moxham. Bomb and Dagger performed regularly throughout South Wales including the Brecon Jazz Festival before splitting up in 1989 following a gruelling European tour. Spike moved to London in 1990 and worked with folk musician Charlotte Grieg. After an eight-year break, Spike and Alison Statton returned to the studio thanks to the support of Rough Trade founder, Geoff Travis. Between 1991 and 1997 Statton and Spike produced Weekend in Wales (EP) and two home made studio albums, Tidal Blues and The Shady Tree for Vinyl Japan. In 2006, the Alison Statton & Spike material was re-released by LTM while the Weekend material was re-released by the Cherry Red record label.
Y en la primera hora todos discos de 1980: Pretenders, Grace Slick y "Dreams", Psychedelic Furs, Young Marble Giants y "Colossal youth", OMD, Devo y "Freedom of choice", Buggle y "The age of plastic", Ultravox y "Vienna", Magazine y "The correct use of soap", The Feelies y "Crazy rhytms", Dexys Midnight Runners y "Searchig for the young rebels", Huey Lewis and The News y Rolling Stones y "Emotiinal rescue". Support us on Bandcamp: https://yacht.bandcamp.com/track/multi-family-garage-sale-single We're revisiting all our influences in quarantine. This is a cover of "Multi-Family Garage Sale," from Land of the Loops' 1995 7" single (and 1996 album, Bundle of Joy). This album made a huge impact on me (Jona) as it showed me that bridge could be built between DIY Pacific Northwest indie-pop and sample-based electronic music. If you're taking a lot of walks around your neighborhood right now, this is a great soundtrack for looking at the world and appreciating small things. "Land of the Loops’ Alan Sutherland was just another Minor Threat fan who couldn’t hold a band together until his conscientious parents bought him a sampler for graduation. The result was a couple of cassette releases and a CD for Seattle’s Up Records, Bundle of Joy, that lures Beat Happening’s Heather Lewis and others into what the Young Marble Giants might’ve done had they had the technology—a loop-driven basement party for the international pop underground." (Will Hermes, SPIN 1996) Credits Released April 11, 2020 Recorded, performed, produced, and mixed by YACHT Mastered by Timothy Stollenwerk

We talk to Welsh music legend Rhys Mwyn about how hearing the Sex Pistols changed his life, the importance of relentless gigging, managing Catatonia in their early days and how the likes of Anhrefn, Y Cyrff and Datblygu paved the way for the future generations of Welsh bands, especially Welsh language bands. Rhys also chooses Young Marble Giants' only studio album Colossal Youth as his favourite Welsh album and inducts it in to the Welsh Music Hall of Fame. Featuring the new single O Nefoedd! (Oh Heavens!) from Swansea band Bandicoot. Follow us on Twitter @welshmusicpod and visit www.welshmusicpodcast.co.uk for more information and to submit a track to showcase.
Sandy Yang is one of my oldest friends (in terms of having known each other - not age haha). She is an artist, graphic designer, singer, guitarist, drummer and all around stand-up person. Her work with The Red Krayola, Lady Noise and on her own is innovative, thought-provoking and unique and her musical taste is as broad and eclectic as can be making her the perfect first guest for the new format of SFTF. Sandy gave me five songs to check out: "Ark of the Covenant" by The Congos "Final Day" by Young Marble Giants "Sketch for Summer" by The Durutti Column "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" by Ryuichi Sakamoto "Clear Vision" by L-Seven I also provided her with a song for us to discuss: "Clean Up Woman" by Betty Wright Hope you enjoy the songs and our conversation.

Stuart Moxham in conversation with David Eastaugh - talking about life in the band and making music. Young Marble Giants were a post-punk band formed in Cardiff, Wales in 1978. Their music was based around the vocals of Alison Statton along with the minimalist instrumentation of brothers Philip and Stuart Moxham. Their early sound was a sharp contrast with the more aggressive punk rock that dominated the underground at the time. Young Marble Giants have only released one full-length studio album, Colossal Youth, in 1980.

Hawley is a three-piece, Chicago-based, post-punk band fronted by singer-songwriter-guitarist Hawley Shoffner. Shoffner’s deep and growling vocals mingle with heavy guitar riffs, melodic bass lines à la Young Marble Giants, and driving drumbeats to create a sound clearly influenced by Dead Moon, Sonic Youth, and The Slits. Olivia Grace is as a pleasurable break from the norm. Whether she’s writing about candy hearts and white picket fences or cheap thrills and motels, the quirky indie pop singer-songwriter tells tales with a playful approach to the madness. VICTOR is the latest incarnation of Chicago based musician Matthew Kerstein. Largely a studio creation, VICTOR was dreamt up out of the home demos made over the summer of 2014 and the added production work of producer Bill Skibbee (producer of the Kills, Wilde Belle and Protomartyr). The songs became a blend of live home recordings and electronic studio production forming into something unexpected. The music maintains the grit and low fi energy of early rock and roll while feeling free to venture into indie, pop and electronic territory.
