If you've ever wondered what it looks like to build a balloon empire, this episode will show you. I'm sitting down with "the Carolina sisters", Haley and Alley of Carolina Balloons and Confetti, a second generation balloon powerhouse who quietly crossed seven figures in revenue with a team that is basically their family. But first, thank you to this month's presenting sponsor, Tuftex, who selected Haley and Ali as their guest of the month. Tuftex Balloons is the only manufacturer making latex balloons in the USA. They're committed to providing premium products and building a stronger balloon community through education. They've also been so supportive of the podcast, so thank you to such a great company! And Haley and Alley were the perfect Tuftex pick because their dad started the company in the 80s when Tuftex was still called Maple City Rubber. They grew up inside balloon boxes, they were rigging balloon drops before they could drive and now they're running massive corporate installs, stadium confetti blasts, street festivals, LED and traditional marquee setups, giant rental games… and casually doing $200,000 in a single month of sales. We talk legacy, takeover, sales psychology, burnout, pivoting during COVID and we get very honest about what it actually takes to grow this big. Buckle up, this episode is packed! A 10-year study on the Eastern Shore found balloons and their ribbons are a top source of litter.
Fall is here, hear the yell, back to school, ring the bell. Yes, it's our new theme song and I sure hope no one else is using it because we're celebrating the arrival of autumn! Make yourself a hot cocoa, slip on the ugg boots, and curl up with an ep that's all about stories. Our lives have been... interesting... so we had plenty of news to share. We're talking sumo, we're talking paint, and we're talking feelings, and we're talking napkins. This episode's mistakes include: Spilling drink(s). Talking for twenty minutes straight. Not knowing what pansexuality is. Egregious factual inaccuracies. On May 6, 1937, the hydrogen filled zeppelin known as the Hindenburg exploded as it was landing in New Jersey. Surprisingly, 62 of the 97 people on board survived. Experts still argue as to what caused an airship the size of the Titanic to be destroyed in approximately 34 seconds.

The pressure is now on Barcelona after Real Madrid climbed to the top of the table with a thumping 4-1 win over Real Sociedad on Valentine's weekend, bringing an end to Pellegrino Matarazzo's unbeaten start in Spain. Join Matt Clark (@MattClark_08) and Ben Sully (@SullyBen) as they reflect upon that contest and the other key talking points from Matchday 24. Martín Presa's relationship with Rayo fans is beyond repair, as demonstrated by the sparse attendance at Butarque for Sunday's clash with Atlético Madrid. Rayo's date at Leganés's home ground at least proved to be successful as Iñigo Pérez's side cruised to a 3-0 victory. We then give José Bordalás his flowers following Getafe's impressive victory over Villarreal, before we start part two with Valencia's crucial derby win - a result that helped Carlos Corberán avoid a divorce from his role as head coach.Elsewhere, there were plenty of cards on display at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, Oviedo's relationship with LaLiga looks set to be brief, and Mallorca are left flirting with the wrong side of the dotted line.We wrap up with a couple of draws, including Borja Iglesias's late equaliser that sent an arrow through Espanyol's hopes of all three points. If you love listening and reading our content, make sure to join us over at lllonline.substack.com. Episode 277Love is in the air… and so is pure 90s nostalgia. On this Valentine's Day episode of My Third Place Podcast, Gregg and I mix romance, retro rewinds, and music memories into one heartfelt pop culture conversation that moves from arcade fights to coming-of-age feelings. We open with reactions to past and present Super Bowl halftime shows, unpacking how performance eras shape our emotions and why certain songs instantly transport us back to a specific moment in life. Music isn't just background noise — it's memory, identity, and time travel all at once.We also shout out Shawn Stockman's new podcast and reflect on the legacy of Boyz II Men, exploring how love songs from the 90s still define what romance sounds like for an entire generation. Then we lean fully into Valentine's Day energy:
Henry Sokolski critiques the chaotic government response to a balloon over El Paso, arguing the incident exposes dangerous coordination flaws in America's homeland security apparatus and interagency communication.
Jackie and Dunlap on calls to investigate Bad Bunny's Super Bowl halftime show, Trump's mass pardons (including a January 6th rioter who went on to assault an 11-year-old), the ongoing Epstein files scandal, and Pam Bondi's disastrous testimony where she spent more time defending the stock market than addressing child abuse victims. Plus: ICE atrocities, Corey Lewandowski's bizarre quest for a badge and gun, Kristi Noem's TV rivalry with Tom Homan, and the Trump administration's continued protection of the powerful while targeting immigrants and journalists. Plus: El Paso party balloons shot down with lasers, Ghislaine Maxwell's cushy prison life, and why Eddie Rabbit deserves your respect. Have YOU apologized to President Trump? Join Jim and Greg for the Thursday 3 Martini Lunch as they sort through conflicting government explanations for the sudden air traffic stoppage in El Paso, the Trump administration squeezing the economic life out of Cuba's Communist regime, and Democrats gaslighting the public about GOP election security efforts.First, they try to nail down the truth about why the FAA ordered a 10-day pause in air traffic around El Paso late Tuesday night. Was it a threatening Mexican drone, a party balloon mistaken for a drone, or testing of anti-drone laser technology? And there are also conflicting explanations about which part of government is responsible. Next, they're pleased to see the Trump administration playing hardball with Cuba by cutting off oil supplies to the Communist regime. The economic impact is real and immediate, but what is the long-term U.S. plan there? Finally, they shake their heads as Michigan Rep. Hillary Scholten and other Democrats baselessly claim that requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote would block married women who changed their names from voting. Jim and Greg explain how this is just the latest lie Democrats are using to oppose secure elections. Please visit our great sponsors:Upgrade your sleep with Brooklyn Bedding and get 30% off sitewide at https://BrooklynBedding.com when you use promo code 3ML at checkout.Find your way forward with BetterHelp when you sign up at https://www.BetterHelp.com/3ML to get 10% off your first month.Upgrade your wardrobe with Mizzen & Main — get 20% off your first purchase at https://MizzenandMain.com with promo code 3ML20.New episodes every weekday.

“Either you stand for something or you fall for anything.”This Earth Xperience features Skyler, also known as @iamsoworthy42, whose recent appearance on Pop The Balloon (Find Love) with Arlette Amuli sparked wide conversation about dating, belief systems, masculinity, and what people are actually building their lives on.Rather than focusing on the show itself, this episode moves beneath the surface. Skyler reflects on how public dating conversations often reduce people to sound bites, preferences, or viral moments, while real life is shaped by values, accountability, faith, and lived experience. He shares how his beliefs were formed through family dynamics, marriage, divorce, fatherhood, and intentional spiritual searching rather than trends or online discourse. The conversation explores what it means to be a man who chooses structure in a culture that celebrates flexibility. Skyler speaks openly about faith beyond labels, love as action rather than feeling, and responsibility as something practiced daily, not performed publicly. Masculinity is discussed through protection, provision, emotional presence, and discipline, not dominance or image.Dating and relationships are examined through a values based lens. Skyler explains why attraction without alignment leads to confusion, and why shared beliefs matter more than chemistry. The episode also touches on how modern dating shows reflect cultural hunger for clarity while often skipping the deeper questions about identity, purpose, and accountability.Throughout the conversation, Skyler emphasizes that belief systems are not abstract ideas but foundations that shape decisions, relationships, and legacy. Whether discussing faith, love, or leadership, he returns to the idea that choosing what you stand on determines where your life goes. Each Earth Xperience has its own fingerprint. The X represents the lived experience being explored. In this episode, the X is the experience of a man navigating public curiosity after a dating show appearance while grounding his life in faith, responsibility, and intentional living.Questions to exploreWhat are people really looking for when they watch dating shows? How do belief systems shape dating choices? What does masculinity look like beyond social media narratives? Is love built on chemistry or shared values? What does it mean to stand for something in modern culture? How to connect with the guestSkylerInstagram and TikTok @iamsoworthy42
Three balloons walk into a bar.In this one, Ian is joined by Pete and Carolyn to talk about the balloon massacre, the disastrous 1997 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade which resulted in millions of dollars of damage, injuries, and pop culture references that would span decades. How did such a joyous event become so chaotic, dangerous, and memorable? Also, Carolyn is worried about the children. Pete wishes he were a victim. Ian doesn't understand the concept of capitalism.
Send us a textIf you're the one everyone turns to, you might be carrying more than you realize. We sit down with psychotherapist and mental wellness consultant Leah Marone to unpack the “serial fixer” habit—why it thrives in first responder culture and how it quietly fuels burnout, resentment, and frayed relationships. Leah works extensively with police, fire, EMS, and dispatch, and she brings sharp, compassionate insights you can use today without adding hours to your schedule. We break down the real difference between therapy and consulting, then rebuild the foundation of wellness with small, sustainable practices: bookending your mornings and nights, using micro resets during daily transitions, and reclaiming self-care as single-task presence instead of numbing or multitasking. Leah introduces a practical rule that changes conversations fast—support, don't solve—along with validation skills that help teammates, partners, and kids think more clearly and take ownership. You'll hear how the fixer impulse can become “compassion as control,” why quick advice often backfires, and how to replace that urge with grounded presence.Expect concrete tools and memorable metaphors. The internal “balloon” lets you notice pressure before it pops, and that shaken “soda bottle” reminds you to release slowly, not explode. We also cover sleep hygiene as the no‑nonsense cornerstone of recovery, data collection to challenge “dark cloud” thinking, and first responder-ready ways to downshift from high gear without losing your edge. If you want stronger boundaries, steadier energy, and deeper connection, this conversation will help you change your default settings. To reach Leah, here is the link to her work: https://linktr.ee/leahmaronelcswIf this resonates, tap follow, share it with a teammate who needs lighter armor, and leave a quick review so more first responders can find these tools. But we know it's capable of more, especially when it comes to managing a small business. But how? How do we tap into the greater capabilities without wasting time? How do we build systems that are organized or repeatable? Well, we ask an expert. Cue Emily from Utah Balloon Creations. NADAR'S BALLOON AND THE BIRTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY Colleague Anika Burgess, Flashes of Brilliance. In 1863, the photographer Nadar undertook a perilous ascent in a giant balloon to fund experiments for heavier-than-air flight, illustrating the adventurous spirit required of early photographers. This era began with Daguerre's 1839 introduction of the daguerreotype, a process involving highly dangerous chemicals like mercury and iodine to create unique, mirror-like images on copper plates. Pioneers risked their lives using explosive materials to capture reality with unprecedented clarity and permanence. NUMBER 1 1870 siege of the Paris Commune.
SHOW 12-2-2026 THE SHOW BEGIJS WITH DOUBTS ABOUT AI -- a useful invetion that can match the excitement of the first decades of Photography. November 1955 NADAR'S BALLOON AND THE BIRTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY Colleague Anika Burgess, Flashes of Brilliance. NUMBER 1 PHOTOGRAPHING THE MOON AND SEA Colleague Anika Burgess, Flashes of Brilliance. Early photography expanded scientific understanding, allowing humanity to visualize the inaccessible. James Nasmyth produced realistic images of the moon by photographing plaster models based on telescope observations, aiming to prove its volcanic nature. Simultaneously, Louis Boutan spent a decade perfecting underwater photography, capturing divers in hard-hat helmets. These efforts demonstrated that photography could be a tool for scientific analysis and discovery, revealing details of the natural world previously hidden from the human eye. NUMBER 2 SOCIAL JUSTICE AND NATURE CONSERVATION Colleague Anika Burgess, Flashes of Brilliance. Photography became a powerful agent for social and environmental change. Jacob Riis utilized dangerous flash powder to document the squalid conditions of Manhattan tenements, exposing poverty to the public in How the Other Half Lives. While his methods raised consent issues, they illuminated grim realities. Conversely, Carleton Watkins hauled massive equipment into the wilderness to photograph Yosemite; his majestic images influenced legislation signed by Lincoln to protect the land, proving photography's political impact. NUMBER 3 X-RAYS, SURVEILLANCE, AND MOTION Colleague Anika Burgess, Flashes of Brilliance. The discovery of X-rays in 1895 sparked a "new photography" craze, though the radiation caused severe injuries to early practitioners and subjects. Photography also entered the realm of surveillance; British authorities used hidden cameras to photograph suffragettes, while doctors documented asylum patients without consent. Finally, Eadweard Muybridge's experiments captured horses in motion, settling debates about locomotion and laying the technical groundwork for the future development of motion pictures. NUMBER 4 THE AWAKENING OF CHINA'S ECONOMY Colleague Anne Stevenson-Yang, Wild Ride. Returning to China in 1994, the author witnessed a transformation from the destitute, Maoist uniformity of 1985 to a budding export economy. In the earlier era, workers slept on desks and lacked basic goods, but Deng Xiaoping's realization that the state needed hard currency prompted reforms. Deng established Special Economic Zones like Shenzhen to generate foreign capital while attempting to isolate the population from foreign influence, marking the start of China's export boom. NUMBER 5 RED CAPITALISTS AND SMUGGLERS Colleague Anne Stevenson-Yang, Wild Ride. Following the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown, China reopened to investment in 1992, giving rise to "red capitalists"—often the children of party officials who traded political access for equity. As the central government lost control over local corruption and smuggling rings, it launched "Golden Projects" to digitize and centralize authority over customs and taxes. To avert a banking collapse in 1998, the state created asset management companies to absorb bad loans, effectively rolling over massive debt. NUMBER 6 GHOST CITIES AND THE STIMULUS TRAP Colleague Anne Stevenson-Yang, Wild Ride. China's growth model shifted toward massive infrastructure spending, resulting in "ghost cities" and replica Western towns built to inflate GDP rather than house people. This "Potemkin culture" peaked during the 2008 Olympics, where facades were painted to impress foreigners. To counter the global financial crisis, Beijing flooded the economy with loans, fueling a real estate bubble that consumed more cement in three years than the US did in a century, creating unsustainable debt. NUMBER 7 STAGNATION UNDER SURVEILLANCE Colleague Anne Stevenson-Yang, Wild Ride. The severe lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic shattered consumer confidence, leaving citizens insecure and unwilling to spend, which stalled economic recovery. Local governments, cut off from credit and burdened by debt, struggle to provide basic services. Faced with economic stagnation, Xi Jinping has rejected market liberalization in favor of increased surveillance and control, prioritizing regime security over resolving the structural debt crisis or restoring the dynamism of previous decades. NUMBER 8 FAMINE AND FLIGHT TO FREEDOM Colleague Mark Clifford, The Troublemaker. Jimmy Lai was born into a wealthy family that lost everything to the Communist revolution, forcing his father to flee to Hong Kong while his mother endured labor camps. Left behind, Lai survived as a child laborer during a devastating famine where he was perpetually hungry. A chance encounter with a traveler who gave him a chocolate bar inspired him to escape to Hong Kong, the "land of chocolate," stowing away on a boat at age twelve. NUMBER 9 THE FACTORY GUY Colleague Mark Clifford, The Troublemaker. By 1975, Jimmy Lai had risen from a child laborer to a factory owner, purchasing a bankrupt garment facility using stock market profits. Despite being a primary school dropout who learned English from a dictionary, Lai succeeded through relentless work and charm. He capitalized on the boom in American retail sourcing, winning orders from Kmart by producing samples overnight and eventually building Comitex into a leading sweater manufacturer, embodying the Hong Kong dream. NUMBER 10 CONSCIENCE AND CONVERSION Colleague Mark Clifford, The Troublemaker. The 1989 Tiananmen Squaremassacre radicalized Lai, who transitioned from textiles to media, founding Next magazine and Apple Daily to champion democracy. Realizing the brutality of the Chinese Communist Party, he used his wealth to support the student movement and expose regime corruption. As the 1997 handover approached, Lai converted to Catholicism, influenced by his wife and pro-democracy peers, seeking spiritual protection and a moral anchor against the coming political storm. NUMBER 11 PRISON AND LAWFARE Colleague Mark Clifford, The Troublemaker. Following the 2020 National Security Law, authorities raided Apple Daily, froze its assets, and arrested Lai, forcing the newspaper to close. Despite having the means to flee, Lai chose to stay and face imprisonment as a testament to his principles. Now held in solitary confinement, he is subjected to "lawfare"—sham legal proceedings designed to silence him—while he spends his time sketching religious images, remaining a symbol of resistance against Beijing's tyranny. NUMBER 12 FOUNDING OPENAI Colleague Keach Hagey, The Optimist. In 2016, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Ilya Sutskever founded OpenAI as a nonprofit research lab to develop safe artificial general intelligence (AGI). Backed by investors like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel, the organization aimed to be a counterweight to Google's DeepMind, which was driven by profit. The team relied on massive computing power provided by GPUs—originally designed for video games—to train neural networks, recruiting top talent like Sutskever to lead their scientific efforts. NUMBER 13 THE ROOTS OF AMBITION Colleague Keach Hagey, The Optimist. Sam Altman grew up in St. Louis, the son of an idealistic developer and a driven dermatologist mother who instilled ambition and resilience in her children. Altmanattended the progressive John Burroughs School, where his intellect and charisma flourished, allowing him to connect with people on any topic. Though he was a tech enthusiast, his ability to charm others defined him early on, foreshadowing his future as a master persuader in Silicon Valley. NUMBER 14 SILICON VALLEY KINGMAKER Colleague Keach Hagey, The Optimist. At Stanford, Altman co-founded Loopt, a location-sharing app that won him a meeting with Steve Jobs and a spot in the App Store launch. While Loopt was not a commercial success, the experience taught Altman that his true talent lay in investing and spotting future trends rather than coding. He eventually succeeded Paul Graham as president of Y Combinator, becoming a powerful figure in Silicon Valley who could convince skeptics like Peter Thiel to back his visions. NUMBER 15 THE BLIP AND THE FUTURE Colleague Keach Hagey, The Optimist. The viral success of ChatGPT shifted OpenAI's focus from safety to commercialization, despite early internal warnings about the existential risks of AGI. Tensions over safety and Altman's management style led to a "blip" where the nonprofit board fired him, only for him to be quickly reinstated due to employee loyalty. Elon Musk, having lost a power struggle for control of the organization, severed ties, leaving Altman to lead the race toward AGI. NUMBER 16
Before airplanes and AI, Atlanta once stopped in its tracks to watch a hot air balloon rise into the sky. In this episode, I cover the story of the city's first balloon flight in 1869. Balloon pioneer Samuel Archer King and the “Dare Devil Dentist” Dr. Albert Hape ascended nearly a mile above Atlanta as thousands watched from below. From spotting Stone Mountain to scaring onlookers and surviving a rough landing, their journey was equal parts spectacle and wonder. Through Hape's own words, we glimpse how life-changing it was to see Atlanta from above for the very first time. Want to support this podcast? The famous street artist Banksy shocked the art world in 2018 when his painting, Girl with Balloon, partially shredded itself moments after selling it for over a million dollars. at a Sotheby's auction in London. Banksy had secretly built a mechanical shredder into the painting's ornate frame, turning the destruction into a piece of performance art which was later authenticated and renamed Love Is in the Bin. He did this to make a statement about the art market's hyper-commercialization. One of the most famous and influential philosophers of the ancient world enjoyed doing similar types of shocking stunts to make his point in the most memorable way possible. Diogenes the Cynic had a reputation for eccentricity. He lived in a large clay wine jar and owned almost nothing, a demonstration that true freedom and happiness come from self-sufficiency. He defecated in public, and when criticized, he asked why it was acceptable to eat there but not to perform other natural acts, illustrating that social shame is arbitrary and not rooted in nature or reason. Since his death in 323 BC, devoted followers made him and his ideas famous the world over. But some modern philosophers like Friedrich Hegel thought of him as just a shock jock. To him, Diogenes had a way of life based on simple, isolated maxims and provocative anecdotes—like those of a folk figure—rather than a fully developed, systematic philosophical system that truly captured the evolving spirit of reason in history. Today’s guest is Inger Kuin, author of “Diogenes: The Rebellious Life and Revolutionary Philosophy of the Original Cynic.“ We look at this iconoclastic philosopher whose brash and free-thinking vision of life ended up inspiring the philosophy of Stoicism. His philosophy stresses the importance of living here and now and not concerning ourselves with things out of our control. Diogenes also stands apart as history’s first recorded critic of slavery, a lone voice of his time that powerfully influenced future thinkers, from Epictetus to future abolitionists.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ballooning became a huge fad starting in the late 18th century, and there was a surprising amount of rioting associated with it. Fervor, excitement, and intoxication in some instances, meant that balloon events were prone to get out of control.
