Susan Yara's journey to redefining skincare didn't start in a lab—it started in front of a camera. From reporting news in the Bronx to becoming a trusted beauty voice on YouTube, Susan built a community before she ever built a brand. With her platform Mixed Makeup, she offered something rare: expert-backed, educational content for women who were underserved by the beauty industry's hype-driven approach. But Susan wasn't just creating content. In 2019, she co-founded Naturium Skincare. Just four years later, she made headlines when she sold her company to e.l.f. Beauty for $355 million—and became one of the first content creators to successfully scale and exit a skincare brand. In this episode, Nancy and Susan go deep on the realities of building a digital-first beauty brand: funding operations before revenue, pivoting from an influencer to a founder mindset, and how it's so important to build authentic relationships with your community and retail partners. Susan shares the failures that shaped her, the influencer marketing tactics that actually work, and how she's balancing life as a founder, mom, and now solo parent. This is a story of vision, resilience, and reinvention. It's proof that you don't need to start with a perfect plan—you just need to start with purpose.Timestamps:[00:00] Introduction[03:12] Joining Forbes and building their first video network[04:55] Learning the power of early digital media[06:03] Getting into beauty and lifestyle content[07:24] Launching Mixed Makeup to serve older audiences[08:30] Early challenges funding high-quality content[09:45] Lessons from Susan's failed first business[11:15] Trying to bootstrap her own skincare brand[12:20] How COVID shut down her original plan[14:42] Joining Naturium and shaping brand direction[15:55] Why Susan moved away from “clean” marketing[17:02] Creating formulas that simplify skincare routines[18:08] Transitioning from influencer to business operator[19:20] Why pricing strategy matters for repeat customers[20:22] The shift in influencer strategy that changed everything[21:30] How nano influencers built authentic community[22:40] Using whitelisting to amplify UGC as ads[23:50] What brands get wrong about influencer selection[25:02] The power of founder-creator relationships[26:05] Getting into Target and making it work[27:15] Building a bold pitch retailers can't ignore[28:30] Launching Naturium body washes with intention[29:45] Hiring a CMO who can become your future CEO[30:58] The expanded role of modern CMOs[32:00] What to look for when hiring key leaders[33:12] Why Susan sold Naturium to e.l.f. In his role, he hosts Q&A forums with executives from various sectors, including social media, advertising, connected TV, streaming, and gaming. Before joining BWG Global, Justin was the Investor Relations Activations Developer at Cision and an Equity Analyst at The Benchmark Company. In this episode… Retail media, CTV advertising, and AI-powered search are evolving faster than many brands can adapt. Marketers are grappling with fragmented content strategies, fluctuating CPMs, and uncertainty around how to allocate budgets effectively across platforms. With performance expectations rising and consumer behaviors shifting, how can brands stay competitive without overspending? According to media and eCommerce analyst Justin Ruiss, now is an ideal time to invest in CTV due to oversupply, lower CPMs, and advanced targeting capabilities. He recommends increasing production budgets to create modular, high-quality content that can be repurposed across channels like TikTok, Amazon, and streaming platforms. Brands can also adopt centralized content planning and leverage tools like Amazon Marketing Cloud to drive enhanced targeting and performance while planning for economic volatility and regulatory changes. In this episode of TheDigital Deep Dive, Aaron Conant interviews Justin Ruiss, SVP of the Media Sector at BWG Global, about the future of digital media buying and AI in eCommerce. Justin explores CTV trends, the rise of agentic AI, and how brand guidelines shape content in gaming environments.

After being so long in gestation, can it live up to the anticipation? Next is BLACK CAB (Acorn Media International), in which Nick Frost terrorises a young couple held captive in the back of his taxi. APE x MECHA APE: NEW WORLD ORDER is an Asylum "mockbuster", riding the coat-tails of the bigger Legendary franchise - but does it hold its own? EVERYONE IS GOING TO DIE (High Fliers Films) is yet another take on the home invasion trope, with a couple of twists to the genre - but are they enough to make this stand out from the pack? GATES OF FLESH (4 Digital Media) is a low budget end of the world movie in which a group of friends hide out in a church as people are being possessed by demons outside.... GLADIATORS (High Fliers Films) is another Asylum mockbuster - but again, one which might be entertaining in its own right? MOB COPS (High Fliers Films)- although the title suggests a Simpsons parody this is a tale of corrupt cops getting in deep with the mafia, and the honest cop on their tail. RUMPLESTILTSKIN (Miracle Media) is an adult re-telling of the fairytale - but exactly who is its audience mean to be?   Our Short Shot is THE MISERABLE MISFORTUNES OF MY MARVELOUS MASTER, a love letter to the likes of Stephen Chow! Click the link to watch the whole short film!   Our DTV Throwback is AMERICAN SAMURAI - this is a "director's cut" of the film and is available to watch for free on YouTube - click the link to see the whole film! Our legacy - or status quo - media is owned and run by billionaires for billionaires and the stories they promote are the ones that will keep us all in line. How do we shift the global narrative towards a future of mutual flourishing? It is axiomatic of this podcast that stories – the good and the bad – are what got us to where we are. We are a storied species. Everything we do arises from the stories we tell ourselves and each other about ourselves, each other and our relationship with the communities of place, purpose and passion around us. Often, we're seeking respect and the pride of knowing we've contributed to the things we care about.  But many of us are living in media echo chambers which have no connection to the other bubbles around us. So how do we bridge the gaps? How do we created a media eco-system, a commons, that works for the people by the people, growing stories of agency and empowerment, motivation and direction in, by and from our communities? This week's guest, Debs Grayson, is a facilitator, researcher and organiser living in Sheffield. She works for Opus Independents, where she spends most of her time developing relatable, accessible metrics to track progress towards the Sheffield City Goals, and also on the People's Newsroom Initiative (PNI). PNI is a project housed within Opus broadly focused on journalism innovation, and our recent work has been reimagining journalism as 'storytelling commoning' - collective practices of sharing and weaving together stories that can support a just climate transition. With a background in media research and campaigning for a transformed media system, she previously worked for the Media Reform Coalition running the 'BBC and Beyond' campaign, which also developed ideas of a 'media commons'. Alongside her role at Opus, she is currently working with the independent press regulator IMPRESS on various projects, including presenting Dis/Mis, a podcast on dis- and mis-information and how we build a trustworthy media.  Opus: The People's Newsroom https://www.weareopus.org/the-peoples-newsroomElinor Ostrom 8 Rules for Managing a Commons https://earthbound.report/2018/01/15/elinor-ostroms-8-rules-for-managing-the-commons/Hastings Commons https://hastingscommons.com/ Amam Cymru https://www.amam.cymru/Amam Cyrmu post on the People's Newsroom https://amam.cymru/the-peoples-newsroom/what-is-a-storytelling-commons-and-why-is-it-so-hard-to-talk-aboutDis/Mis podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/dis-mis-exploring-misinformation-in-modern-media/id1775649531Accidental Gods Gatherings https://accidentalgods.life/gatherings-2025/Accidental Gods Membership https://accidentalgods.life/join-us/

Through immersion in the work of these artists and psychoanalytic ideas, participants will walk away with a better understanding of the transformative process inherent of the act of creation itself, especially when used as a powerful disruption of narrative, and hopefully feel inspired themselves to create! In this discussion, Vanessa gives a sneak peek into each of the four parts of the course. Some highlights are: talking about the inspiration for the course;outlining the events that led to the creation of psychoanalysis as well as the avant-garde movement;expanding on the historical backdrop – what was happening during these years that created this paradigm shift;looking at the years leading up to WW1, and what was taking place then, focusing on psychoanalysis and the avant-garde art scenes;focusing on surrealism and later developments in experimental film, followed by some discussion on the Beat Poets, and outlining how these three are interconnected;focusing on the birth of pop art, and art as it moved from the galleries to the streets, as well as performance art that included the body as an important vehicle/tool of expression. PROGRAM NOTES:Vanessa's website (with all links): Dr Vanessa SinclairMorbid Anatomy Course:The Cut in Creation: Exploring the Avant-Garde, Dada, Surrealism, Modern Art, Noise Music, and Performance Art through a Psychoanalytic Lens, Led by Vanessa Sinclair, PsyD, Begins May 25 — Morbid AnatomySelected Works:Amazon.com: Scansion in Psychoanalysis and Art (Art, Creativity, and Psychoanalysis Book Series): 9780367567262: Sinclair, Vanessa: BooksAmazon.com: The Queerness of Psychoanalysis: 9781032603827: Sinclair, Vanessa, Punzi, Elisabeth, Sauer, Myriam: BooksPodcast Rendering Unconscious:Podcast – Dr Vanessa SinclairInstagram:InstagramRobert Frank, Me and My Brother (1968)Me and My Brother (1968) - IMDbMusic, Editing and Video Production: Stephanie Shea

In this episode, we sit down with Bob Regular, CEO of Infolinks, to explore the evolving world of programmatic advertising and the rising importance of curation. Bob walks us through his journey in digital media—from the dial-up days to today's complex ad tech ecosystem—offering valuable insights along the way. We dive into how Supply Path Optimization (SPO) is playing a critical role in improving the connection between advertisers and publishers by enhancing media quality and eliminating unnecessary middlemen. Using the analogy of choosing the best billboard location, Bob explains how digital ad placement is just as strategic, with audience targeting and creative messaging being essential for success. We also touch on the often-overlooked challenges of inconsistent naming conventions and unclear attention metrics, and how curation and SPO can help simplify and improve the overall advertising experience. The conversation wraps up with a closer look at the differences between direct and reseller relationships in ad tech, and how SPO is shifting industry priorities. Bob shares key takeaways from recent training sessions with media holding companies, including the major reduction in non-value-adding players since the adoption of ads.txt. As far-right tech billionaires continue to seize power, the United States is facing a new and dangerous threat: techno-fascism. This week, Imara unpacks this dangerous new force in American politics with journalist Gil Duran. First, Gil traces the influence of Curtis Yarvin's extreme beliefs on Peter Thiel, Elon Musk and JD Vance. He explains how tech elites are working to dismantle democracy and install a corporate dictatorship, why their movement is so focused on trans people, and what it will take for the American people to resist this dark vision for our future. Contemporary developments in communications technologies have overturned key aspects of the global political system and transformed the media landscape. Yet interlocking technological, informational, and political revolutions have occurred many times in the past.  In Seeking News, Making China: Information, Technology, and the Emergence of Mass Society (Stanford UP, 2024), John Alekna traces the history of news in twentieth century China to demonstrate how large structural changes in technology and politics were heard and felt. Scrutinizing the flow of news can reveal much about society and politics--illustrating who has power and why, and uncovering the connections between different regions, peoples, and social classes. Taking an innovative, holistic view of information practices, Alekna weaves together both rural and urban history to tell the story of rise of mass society through the lens of communication techniques and technology, showing how the news revolution fundamentally reordered the political geography of China. John Alekna is Assistant Professor of the History of Science at Peking University. His research focuses on information, technology, and the emergence of modernity in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Asia. Wider interests include the global history of science, Chinese intellectual history, and the history of empire. In 2024, U.S. healthcare and pharma ad spending will top $30 billion—but how much of it actually drives results? In this episode, Chris Boyer and Reed Smith dig into the hidden inefficiencies in health system media budgets and ask a bold question: Are we investing strategically, or just fueling the machine? They dive into: Why Media Waste Persists – From inherited budget models to disconnected teams and shallow KPIs, the current approach to digital spend is full of cracks. The Illusion of Strategy – Why having a media plan isn't the same as having a strategy—and how vague goals and channel-first thinking lead to missed ROI. The Hidden Costs of Poor Alignment – From creative mismatches to lack of CRM integration, unmeasured waste is hiding beyond the dashboard. Agency Transparency & Trust – What health systems need to know about principal media buying, opaque reporting, and misaligned incentives. They're joined by Jane Crosby of True North, who shares her performance marketing playbook: how strategic bid management, integrated media planning, AI tools, and smarter collaboration are turning wasteful spend into efficient, results-driven campaigns. In 2025, it's time to stop asking if media is being wasted—and start asking how to turn it into a high-yield investment.
