Studying oysters can help us understand how Connecticut’s shoreline is changing. Studying lizards can help us understand the history of life on our planet. Biologists research living organisms. And in doing so, they help us understand not only ourselves, but also the way our lives are intertwined with those of every other species. This hour— Connecticut biologists tell us how their work helps us see what’s going on in the world around us. We'll discuss everything from how someone growing up in New York City could become fascinated by nature to the impact of federal funding cuts on research. GUESTS: Martha Muñoz: Assistant Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Yale University, Assistant Curator of Vertebrate Zoology at the Yale Peabody Museum and recipient of a 2024 MacArthur Fellowship. This week, Neptune recounts the chaotic tale of getting locked out by none other than a mischievous dog they were pet sitting—yes, the dog did it. Then we dive into the world of red reptiles—yep, there are species that naturally sport that fiery color, let's see if any surprise you! And finally, we wrap up with a sizzling round of Smash or Pass: Nail Design Trends—from crazy cateye to milky nails, we have opinions.Get early access to episodes: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-wild-type-podcast/subscribeFollow the podcast: - https://www.instagram.com/thewildtypepodcast/- https://www.tiktok.com/@thewildtypepodcast- Merch: https://the-wild-type-podcast-llc-shop.fourthwall.com/Follow Neptune the Chameleon:- https://www.youtube.com/c/NeptunetheChameleon/- http://instagram.com/neptunethechameleon- https://tiktok.com/@neptunethechameleon- http://facebook.com/neptunethechameleon- https://www.neptunethechameleon.comFollow Lyssa's Lizards:- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmZaN6Q4yOt1j36J0-Ml6LQ- https://www.instagram.com/lyssaslizards- https://www.tiktok.com/@lyssaslizards- https://m.facebook.com/p/Lyssas-Lizards-100064470381677/- https://www.lyssaslizards.comSponsors:- https://www.pangeareptile.com/wildtype- https://scratchbycmtravels.com/- https://www.redlineshipping.com/- https://coldbloodedcaffeine.com/- https://symtonbsf.com/- https://palmstreet.app/- https://reptilekages.com/

BT and Sal hilariously grapple with the hypothetical terror of escaping alligators, debating their speed, jumping abilities, and the best (and worst) strategies for survival. From outrunning them on land to fighting them off with a big stick, the duo comically navigates the dangers of these powerful reptiles, ultimately deciding they'd rather face a gator than a bear.
With Mike Hosking off on holiday, Heather du Plessis-Allan was joined by Tim Wilson and Trish Sherson to Wrap the Week that was. They discussed the situation with the gold mine, lizards, and Department of Conservation, the company working to resurrect the moa, and ask the question of if it's better to be smart or dumb. The Resources Minister says a setback for expansion of the country's largest gold mine could result in the loss of up to a thousand jobs. Central Otago's Macraes gold mine applied for a permit under the Wildlife Act to clear vegetation on its site in a bid to expand its operation. Last month the Department of Conservation declined it, stating the company hadn't made clear how it would relocate more than 10 thousand lizards. Shane Jones told Heather du Plessis-Allan the lizards are as common as acne on a teenager. He says they're scattered throughout Otago, and farmers don't need special permits when carrying out work on their land. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this delightfully chaotic episode, we dive deep into the very real struggle of finding the perfect pair of jean shorts — you know, the ones that don't ride up, cut off circulation, or make you question every decision you've ever made in a fitting room. Then, we wade into the slimy (but fascinating) world of amphibians for a segment we're calling “Facts and Phibs” — separating truth from toadally false when it comes to frogs. And finally, we tackle the mysterious phenomenon of the boomerang ex — why do guys you've dated always seem to reappear just when you've finally moved on?It's fashion, it's frogs, and it's a little bit of emotional whiplash. Hit play and let's unpack it all. Lizards are extremely good at becoming snake-shaped. A long body with small or absent limbs is a shape that has evolved dozens of times across nearly every major lineage of lizards. This episode, we explore the diversity of leglessness in lizards, we discuss which groups have done it and which groups have done it best, and we examine what's known about the repeated evolution of this unexpected body shape. In the news: giant dusky salamander, very early footprints, a Denisovan skull, a mammoth tusk boomerang, and night lizards. A monumental new study has addressed the likely impacts of climate change on the activity of desert lizards in Africa and Australia. Hotter temperatures will likely ‘squeeze' the activity window of some lizards, especially those active during the day. This week, we're not holding back. First up: zoos — conservation havens or outdated institutions? We dive into the hot debate over whether zoos should still exist, the ethics behind animal captivity, and what it really means to protect wildlife in 2025. Then, we get a little spooky with a segment on reptile keeper nightmares — from escaped snakes to dog-sized salamanders! And to round it all out: are we dry shampoo girls? It's a surprisingly loaded question. We unpack the beauty standards, hygiene shortcuts, and the emotional rollercoaster of pretending we totally did wash our hair today. It's ethical dilemmas, reptile-induced anxiety, and dry shampoo discourse — all in one episode. We're taking you on a wild ride—literally and metaphorically for this episode. First, we soar through the treetops of Colorado with a firsthand account of an unforgettable ziplining adventure. Then, we make a surprising pivot to aisle 7 at Home Depot, where a casual plant run turned into a showdown with—wait for it—mealybugs. Next, things get real. We dive into the complex terrain of ending friendships: how to know when it's time, how to do it with compassion, and how to deal with the emotional fallout. Finally, for our fellow content creators, we share practical advice for navigating social media mindfully—how to stay engaged without feeling consumed. It's an episode full of highs, bugs, boundaries, and balance.
