In today's Normal World, Dave Landau, Angela, and Matt McClowry—filling in for 1/4 Black Garrett—tackle the absurdity of the news. Canada moves to ban Pornhub over Trump's trade policies. Tracy Morgan's courtside vomiting incident and Walmart settlement spark debate, while war stories from the Syracuse Funny Bone resurface, featuring entourages crammed into green rooms, surreal Ed Bassmaster shows, and hecklers critiquing Amish Mafia jokes before shows devolve into motorboat contests. The hypocrisy of the Climate Summit is on full display as the Amazon rainforest is bulldozed for a highway built exclusively for world leaders. Bill Gates, private jets, and AI's insatiable water consumption raise fresh concerns. AI-generated comedy flops, while outdated industry figures get roasted. The episode closes with a UK mayor found dead in a crack house, naked in a camping chair—leaving behind a legacy that's both shocking and strangely fitting. Extremist ideologies and the conspiracy vehicles that carry them are now heard throughout mainstream social and political discourse. Whether it's Trump parroting falsehoods about migrants eating dogs and cats or Robert F. Kennedy Jr. parroting debunked claims about how vaccines cause autism, extreme viewpoints cloaked in conspiracy theories are now frequently articulated by those in offices of power. How has this happened? When did the extremes become mainstream? And what draws people to these radical ways of thinking in the first place? Then as we delve deeper why do extremists so frequently rely on conspiracy theories to articulate their political programs? Why don't they come out and just voice the radical or exclusionary political program directly? Why do they conceal it via complex conspiracy theories about Lizards, Pedophilia rings, and a Jewish plot to dilute the purity of the white race? This is the first episode of a two-part interview with Julia Ebner -- the princess of extremist infiltration, the queen of counter radicalization, and author of Going Mainstream: Why Extreme Ideas are Spreading, and What We Can Do About It. The duo delve into the intricate relationship between conspiracy theories and extremist ideologies. Analysing how conspiracy theories serve as a unifying force among various radical groups, by providing a framework for scapegoating and explaining grievances. Plus: the psychological appeal of conspiracy myths, their role in modern political movements, and the historical context that shapes these narratives Producer: George McDonagh Executive Producer: Neil Fearn Subscribe to our Substack (for free, or get the PAID version to get a discount on our March 21st event with Bill Browder and Stephanie Baker at the Frontline Club): https://natoandtheged.substack.com/ Show Notes Links: For more on Julia visit https://www.julia-ebner.com/speaker Get Julia's book ‘Going Mainstream: Why extreme ideas are spreading, and what we can do about it' - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Going-Mainstream-extreme-ideas-spreading/dp/1804183784 Read Jason's article, ‘A lizard person's guide to US election conspiracy theories' in the New European: https://www.theneweuropean.co.uk/a-lizard-persons-guide-to-us-election-conspiracy-theories/ Listen: Episode 77 - The System is Rigged: Conspiracy theories and the revenge of the losers https://pod.link/1706818264/episode/cc41cbf3e1c05fb8a696e0faad151283 For a great video about her life and experiences: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y4Kv6P6VII Learn more about your ad choices. In the Slovak lesson, you are going to learn some new words from my legend. You will also learn how to say “You are my treasure!“ in Slovak. At the end of this episode, you can find my legend about two little lizards.Slovak lesson1. nekonečná divočina (endless wilderness)2. šepkajúce lesy (whispering forests)3. slnečné lúky (sunny meadows)4. zabudnuté dedinky (forgotten villages)5. čarovný kraj (magical land)6. drevená píšťalka (wooden whistle)7. nádherný výhľad (beautiful view)8. neobyčajné jašteričky (unusual lizards)9. roztavené zlato (molten gold)10. vyleštené striebro (polished silver)11. nevídaný poklad (unseen treasure)12. Ty si môj poklad. (You are my treasure.)Legend:Povesť o žiarivých jašteričkáchNiekde vo svete je svetadiel Európa. . . Hello everyone! Episode 109 is a wide-ranging two-hour conversation with PhD student Tasman Ezra. We cover fossil turtles, anole radiation, his band Half Inch Hero, Taz's Honduras herp conservation project, and much, much more. I met Taz in southeast Missouri last October, and within minutes I knew I wanted to get him in front of a microphone to talk about what's he is up to, which as it turns out, is a LOT. I have some related links below for you all to check out: First up is HonduHerp - The Guardians of Honduran Herpetofauna. Taz and his associates are working hard to establish preserves and corridors to help protect Honduran Herpetofauna and other wildlife. Please consider helping out - even a small donation with go a long way to help this project. Right now there an anonymous donor is doing a dollar-for-dollar match, so it's a good time to double your impact! (I myself made a small donation). Check out Taz' band Half Inch Hero on YouTube - My favorite is "Martyr". They already have some herper fans, including friend of the show Bob Ferguson! Check it out and see what you think! Finally, here are a couple books by Dr. Jonathan Losos for you to check out: Lizards in an Evolutionary Tree: Ecology and Adaptive Radiation of Anoles Improbable Destinies: How Predictable is Evolution? Thanks for listening everyone! And as always, please keep the comments and suggestions coming, and please take time to rate the show on your podcast platform! The show email is somuchpingle@gmail.com, and there's also a So Much Pingle group on Facebook, for discussion, comments, feedback, suggestions, herp confessions, tips for herping better, etc. -Mike

Dr. Dawei “David” Han is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Biology at the University of Maryland, College Park. David studies how snakes hear. Snakes are able to detect sound without external ear structures, particularly low frequency vibrations, and David is interested in how this process works, as well as the structures and pathways involved. When he's not working, David enjoys taking care of his pet snakes at home and observing reptiles and amphibians in the wild in his backyard and local parks. There are a variety of snakes native to Maryland, and it's fun to get outside and see what he can find. David received his bachelor's degree in Biology from China Agricultural University and his master's degree in Biology from Truman State University. He recently completed his PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Maryland, College Park where he is now conducting postdoctoral research. In this interview, he shares more about his life and science.
