Slushies, this episode finds Kathy, Lisa and Jason gearing up for AWP, and it's the last one with Divina at the table (we'll miss her contributions!). Three poems by Luiza Flynn-Goodlet get close reading by the team. Lisa admits to feeling initially resistant to the Ars Poetica form with the first poem, but admits to being won over and others agree. Jason connects the meditation on death in this poem and its personification of death to Anthony Hecht's Flight Among the Tombs: Poems. The delightful ways in which the first and third poems are in conversation with each other rounds out a layered discussion. (Not to be missed – Jason attempting some Gen Z slang with his farewell!) At the table: Kathleen Volk Miller, Samantha Neugebauer, Lisa Zerkle, Jason Schneiderman, Divina Boko, Lillie Volpe (sound engineer) Luiza Flynn-Goodlett is the author of Mud in Our Mouths (forthcoming from Northwestern University Press) and Look Alive (winner of the 2019 Cowles Poetry Book Prize from Southeast Missouri State University Press), along with numerous chapbooks, most recently Familiar (Madhouse Press, 2024) and The Undead (winner of Sixth Finch Books' 2020 Chapbook Contest). Her poetry can be found in Fugue, Poetry Northwest, Third Coast, and elsewhere. She serves as a Poetry Editor for the Whiting Award–winning LGBTQIA2S+ literary journal and press Foglifter. Her critical work has appeared in Cleaver, Pleiades, The Adroit Journal, and other venues. Bluesky: luizagurley.bsky.social, Website

Guster's Ryan Miller discusses his songwriting process before Scott, Paul, and Ryan go totally off the rails on 80s pop songs, Sebastian Bach, and other random stuff. One of the most fun interviews we've had in a while! PART ONE:Paul and Scott chat about the time Paul opened for Guster, their friend who met his wife thanks to Guster fandom, and the phenomenon of social cultures forming around certain performers. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Guster's Ryan MillerABOUT RYAN MILLER:Ryan Miller is best known for his work with the alternative rock band Guster. With nine studio albums and a dedicated live following, the band has topped Billboard's independent albums chart with Evermotion in 2015 and Look Alive in 2019. Among their top 5 singles on Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay chart are the songs “Amsterdam,” “Careful,” “One Man Wrecking Machine,” “Satellite,” and “Overexcited.” In addition to his work with the band, Miller has composed the scores for over 15 feature films, and launched his own TV show on Vermont PBS. The creative omnivore has also written a screenplay, a musical, and several feature articles. But Miller always returns to the band he loves. Guster's most recent album is 2024's Ooh La La.

Today I'm sharing a replay of the MOST DOWNLOADED guest interview of 2023! This episode struck such a chord, I'm excited to share again whether you're replaying or catching it for the first time. A few Sundays ago, a guest pastor at our church shared words that stuck with me, “You can have an amazing life, but not really be alive.” His words stood out and I instantly thought about how many of us are living on autopilot, going through the motions, feeling like we're missing out on our actual lives. My guest on this episode of BEYOND: The Podcast for Moms Called to Business, Jenn Kautsch, helps women wake up and feel fully alive again – specifically, through a lifestyle that includes living alcohol free. Jenn Kautsch (pronounced Couch) is the founder and creator of the SoberSis community and a leader in the “Sober Curious” movement. She lives in Fort Worth, Texas with her husband of 27 years. She's also the mom of two adult children in their early 20s. Jenn launched SoberSis on Christmas Day of 2017 and since then, more than 200,000 women have downloaded her free “Happy Hour Survival Guide”. Over 30,000 have participated in her 21 Day Reset Challenge. It's her passion and life's calling to create a space where women can renegotiate their relationship with alcohol without labels, judgment or shame. She coaches women who feel stuck in the “gray area” on the drinking spectrum and helps women get off of “auto-pilot” and mindless sipping. Jenn is also the author of a book, Look Alive, Sis! 40 Days To Awaken Your Sober Mind. On this episode of BEYOND, you'll learn: Jenn's personal story that led to the birth of SoberSis What it looks like to be “Sober Curious” and why so many women are choosing to live alcohol-free How to know if you're in the “gray area” on the drinking spectrum Why alcohol can become a go-to solution for so many moms What it looks like to skip the wine and get your life back Important links for this episode: SoberSis: Get Jenn's FREE Happy Hour Survival Guide Follow Jenn on Instagram Get Jenn's book: Look Alive, Sis! She lives in Fort Worth, Texas with her hubby of 28 years and has 2 adult children in their 20's. SoberSis was born Christmas Day of 2017 and since then more than 200K women have downloaded her free Happy Hour Survival Guide and over 30K have participated in the 21 Day Reset Challenge. Those numbers are growing every month as she works hard to get the message out to more women! She is a motivational speaker and author of Look Alive, Sis.Fun fact, Jenn's 21 Day Reset Challenge is the reset challenge I joined when I first became sober curious. It's where I planted my roots, discovered the amazing benefits of being alcohol-free, and met countless, amazing women who were on a similar journey as I was. Shout out to my 2019 OG's!!!It was an absolute blast to have Jenn back on the show and I have a feeling you are going to simply love our chat.I hope this episode blesses you.
On today's episode, we're honored to chat with Jenn Kautsch, the inspiring founder of the SoberSis community. Jenn is a pivotal voice in the "Sober Curious" movement and the author of "Look Alive, Sis." Her mission? To forge a judgment-free space where women can reassess their bond with alcohol. Jenn specializes in guiding those stuck in the "gray area" of drinking, steering them away from the mindless "wine o'clock" routine. Today, we unearth Jenn's journey, notably how she sought solace from anxiety through drinking. Together, we unravel the evolution of the 'mommy wine culture' and confront the double-edged sword of drinking to feel yet desiring numbness. Jenn elaborates on the transformative process she undertook to realign her mind, body, and spirit and how she now empowers other women to do the same. Addressing the pervasive 'mom guilt', we touch upon alcohol's illusionary promise of connection. We also touch on the undeniable power of a compelling 'why' when starting a sobriety journey and how to find a supportive sober tribe. To learn more about Jen and Sober Sis, click here. For some it's coffee, for others wine time, and still others, it's both. If you have less control over how you feel and rely on … anything but your natural energy, the question is… do you want it that way? This episode asks, whether you choose it or it's got you. Feel like it's wine o'clock or some other wine time affectionately known as? Do your friends, relatives, and trainer expect and know that you'll smell of alcohol when they see you? (P.S. Did you know they do?) Today's guest has been through many relationships with alcohol. My Guest: Jenn Kautsch is the founder and creator of the SoberSis community and leader in the “Sober Curious” movement. She lives in Fort Worth, Texas with her hubby of 27 years and has 2 20-something kids. SoberSis was “born” on Christmas Day of 2017 and since then more than 200K women have downloaded her free “Happy Hour Survival Guide” and over 30K have participated in the 21 Day Reset Challenge. She is all about holistic health and promotes freedom from the “detox-to-retox” cycle. Sharing through her personal faith, understanding of science and ability to facilitate connection, lives are being changed. Everyday women are becoming more fully alive through sober-minded living and more present in their own amazing lives. Here's to conscious thoughts about wine time. Questions We Answer in This Episode: Where did we fall into this "detox to retox" loop - not unlike binge and purge - a potentially more familiar term for our audience members. 6 years ago I began a 28-Day Kickstart program, and day 1 I gave all the info about how this was going to go… and the question was, “So what kind of alcohol is allowed? Is vodka the best?” There's a significant "wine o'clock" habit...especially in our 50's and beyond. What's the premise behind the Happy Hour Survival Guide? Is it about how to survive when everyone else is drinking and you want to but are trying not to? What's the concept of “dry January” say to you? This seems like the ultimate tox and detox … like, I'm going to binge my way through holiday parties and then I'll make up for it. Let's talk about purpose, passion, and presence in our lives...especially in new life seasons! What's New for Jenn? Kevin McKeown is one half of the high octane Austin rock duo Black Pistol Fire, providing guitar and vocals alongside drummer Eric Owen. They have released 6 albums over the last 10 years, the most recent being 2021's Look Alive, and the band has built a reputation for their incendiary live performances. As a big fan of the band, I was quite excited to sit down with Kevin to discuss his creative process, the band's approach to live performance, and get his thoughts on the various aspects of the rock duo concept.
